Chairman’s Report

Marty Sutherland Chairman’s Report – May 2021 Report time again. As I mentioned in my Annual Report, I am stepping down as Chairman. I have already mentioned “my” team in the report, and I would like to reiterate that here. A wonderful group, and thank you all for your support. Special thanks to Owen, Maureen, and Chris. A job well done. The breakfasts on the first Sunday of the month are going well, with good turnouts and car displays outside. Club night in April had a visit from Greenlea Rescue Helicopter personnel and, later in the week, a Treasure Hunt organised by Owen and Heather. A fun trip which we all enjoyed. I am writing this on Anzac Day and the usual music and stories from this time are on the radio. A moving time for several people. Personally, my Dad was captured on Crete and spent four years as a Prisoner of War. He never talked about it when I was growing up despite all my questions, little snippets would come out, but like many of his ilk who fought at the time their secrets Treasure Hunt winners, Jerry and Greg posing for their epic “Titanic” photo. went with them. I am sure many in the VCC had family members in the same position. Again Owen has a list organised for the forthcoming year, and I am sure it will be up to the same standard as in the past. With the AGM getting closer, please give some thought to stepping up and getting involved with the committee. On a sad note, Lester Strawbridge passed away. A person with great knowledge and a very keen man on Jags. I was fortunate to talk to him a few times before he left us. RIP Lester and Marie. On a brighter note, just remember your body is like a garage sale. Some stuff looks old, some stuff doesn’t work, and you just can’t identify some stuff. Well, goodbye and see you later. Club Captain’s Report

Owen Duncan Club Captain’s Report – May 2021 Well, that is April done and dusted, and a great time was had by all, starting with The Coffee Club breakfast. To the members that came to the last breakfast at the beginning of April, please come and see me to collect your $10.00 voucher, before you head into the upcoming breakfast. This is to compensate for the overcharging by their new staff. Those who are coming to breakfast, please don’t forget to ring or text me so I can book sufficient seating – 0274 482 484 or 07 3788 327. The Fun Day Sunday Treasure Hunt was a blast and from the feedback received, everyone enjoyed it. The picture on the front page of this issue, the “Harrier,” was worth 70 points, and only Neil and Lorraine Chave found it. Well done. On Tuesday the 4th of May I need 5 or 6 cars to come to the Hospice morning tea run, those who are available, please ring me. We will need to be at Hospice about 10- 10.15 am Wednesday 12th of May is our AGM at 7.30 pm at the Clubrooms. Come along and have your say, there are a number of positions on the committee up for grabs, and we need your support as per Chris’s email to you all. Enjoy a chat and cup of tea after the election of officers. For the club run for 16th of May I have organised a lunch at the café situated on the banks of the Waikato River at Orakei Korako. Heather and I took our grandson last weekend and had a great day checking out what is arguably one of the best thermal areas left in New Zealand. The plan is to all have lunch at the Café to support local business, relax and enjoy the scenery. If you wish, you can take the ferry MAY 2021

across the river and enjoy a walk around the hidden valley thermal park. The cost is $39.00 per person. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half for a leisurely stroll. If you plan to do this walk, you need to know there are quite a few steps involved, most with handrails and well-marked. If I can do it, most of you will be able to do it! It is worthwhile. Looking further ahead now to the club night on 9th of June, Brent and Bruce will talk to you members wanting a Vehicle Identification Certificate for your car. Members need to have a VIC to enter national rallies outside of our club. This also includes the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in New Plymouth from the 16th to the 21st of January, 2022. More information about this rally is further on in this newsletter. On Sunday 20th of June, we will stage our Brass Monkey Run, which is being set by our current chairman, Marty, and Lynne, last year’s winners. Lester Thomas Strawbridge - Eulogy

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Lester Strawbridge a longstanding member of our Vintage Car Club. Lester moved from Auckland to Taupo in 1972, having taken up a position as Foreman Engineer at Fletcher Woodpanels. His skill and attention to detail promoted him within Fletchers to Engineering Manager, the position he held until he retired. He made many business trips throughout the world, solving engineering problems in the wood panel manufacturing industry on behalf of Fletchers. His interest in Vintage Cars and all things mechanical led him to join the Vintage Club. His enthusiasm was with quality examples, and his first vintage car was a 1927 National Chevrolet. A 1934 Vauxhall DX was followed by a 1961 Jaguar Mk 2. His last car, which he completely restored, was a Mk 7 Jaguar.

Lester was so meticulous in his workmanship that having painted the Mk 7 in his workshop, he discovered bubbles in the paintwork, he then set about completely stripping the paint off down to bare metal and started all over again. His calibre of detail was well known in the club, and his cars were always immaculately maintained and presented. Lester’s years in the Taupo Vintage Club were productive ones. He was club captain for two years, Committee member, and Bulletin Editor for many years. Plus, he was VIC Certifier where his engineering skills were invaluable, and he only recently resigned from this post when ill health prevented him from carrying on. Lester also had two other hobbies along with his many interests, one of them was Art, the other Photography, which went hand in hand with his artistic skill. He loved painting many things, but he particularly liked painting Animal Portraits and took commissions and painted to order. When Jocelyn and the late Norm Pointon visited him home, they got such a surprise when he showed them his Art Studio. They were retired Art School Teachers and were amazed with the quality of his work, more so when he explained that he had not gone to Art School because advice back in the day was to get a trade. His skill as a keen photographer, particularly of nature, and his collection of photos is extensive. He took photos of all his paintings and had a large collection of cameras, some of which cost thousands of dollars. Lester was a man of many talents, which will be missed by the VCC and of course, his family and friends. His eye for detail and for getting the job done in his quiet, unassuming way will not be forgotten. We record our deepest sympathy for his family. RIP Lester, you will be greatly missed.

15th National Model A Rally, Gisborne.

28th March - 4th April 2021 Four years ago Auckland based Model A owner David Mossman and Partner Karen had a vision and passion to run the 2021 National Model A Rally in Gisborne, the City of his birth. Our National Model A Rally is held every two years, alternating between the North Island and South Island. After four years of planning with a very small committee, who also had a passion to be involved, they pulled it off. One of the best that we have been to, and boy did they keep us busy, three very busy touring days. Big things come out of a small committee. Our journey to the National Model A Rally started on Saturday the 27th March 2021, heading toward Rotorua and meeting up with another 4 Model A’s at Rainbow Mountain heading towards Lake Waikaremoana for the night. Sunday, we travelled onto Gisborne to our Motel unit for the next seven nights. Note: If you are heading to Gisborne, check out the Alfresco Motor Lodge. Highly recommended and not used for social housing!.

Alfresco Motor Lodge was filled with 15 couples and their Model A’s and what was the topic of conversation? Model A’s of course. Busy day, Sunday after arriving in Gisborne checking into our Motel and then heading down to the A & P Showgrounds, Events Centre to collect our registration, some merchandise and enjoy a wine and cheese Our home away from home for the next week.

The first full day of the Rally is usually taken up with Vehicle Judging, and a good number of cars entered. Our Tuesday run was out to the Mahia Penninsula via Opoutama, Mahunga, and Mahia Beach, then to the end of the Peninsula to view the Rocket Lab Site from a distance (see photo below).

With all our Rally Runs out off Gisborne, once you get off main roads, its all metal, some steep, windy, and lots of corrugations. 2nd gear stuff!!. Our next day’s run was back roads again to Motu via Te Karaka & Whakarau. Motu School put on BBQ sausages as a fundraiser for us to purchase for lunch. After lunch, it was off to visit the Motu Falls, which Pam and I missed when travelling through here a few years ago, as we missed the signpost when going from Matawai, Motu to Opotiki. Great backcountry driving. The highlight of the Rally was to dress up in Era Costumes and travel out to Kaikino Station, at Tiniroto, enjoying a high country lunch of BBQ Chicken, Lamb, and Venison all wrapped up in a big bun. Unfortunately, the weather gods were not on our side on this day, lots of rain at Station, so programme didn’t go as planned, but didn’t deter the locals in showing us how they do Terrier Racing. Very popular in Gisborne as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer. (See photo). MAY 2021

Organizers were also hoping to show us how Aerial Topdressing is done, including a Tiger Moth coming in for a visit, but the weather didn’t allow this to happen. After a wet and cooler day, it was time to head back to Gisborne with very dirty cars. Our evening program also kept us busy, Dinner and Welcome Evening on Monday night. A Hoe Down Country Evening on Wednesday night where Pam and I got together with fellow Taupo Club Members Bruce, Trish, Barry & Vivienne. We enjoyed Texan Beef and BBQ Pulled Pork.

North Island Ford Model A Club Assembly Challenge

As always, these events must come to an end with the Award Night, Farewell, and Dinner. After the Rally, Pam and I headed to Mount Maunganui then onto Opito Bay for some R & R. Back to Mount Maunganui and home to Taupo, “Dora the Explorer” travelled 1200 miles trouble-free Motoring. She’s now resting. A great well organized Rally by a small band of helpers. Taupo VCC AGM Info This year the AGM is set down for Wednesday, 12th May, at our club rooms. 7.30pm. Amongst other matters to be resolved is the election of officers which are: Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer & Club Captain. Of those roles Maureen has indicated a willingness to continue as Treasurer & likewise Owen as Club Captain. The other 2 officers are vacating their roles & require other members to take over these positions. Also standing down is Tony, Neil & Trish from the Committee. Now is your chance to stand up & be heard. I am confident that you will give serious thought to who may assume these positions & that you will "sound out" among our 100+ colleagues & thus look forward to a flood of completed nomination forms which I have attached to help you expedite the process. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Taupo Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand held at the club rooms, A C Baths Ave, Taupo, at 7.30 p.m. on 8th July 2020 Present: 35 members including Neil Chave as Chairman. Prior to the commencement of the meeting the members stood in a moments silence in memory of deceased members. Apologies: Danny and Fiona Jones, Bill and Marilyn Collins, Rod and Helen Campbell, James Cowie, Ray and Shona Harwood, Jan and Dave Nixon, Bill and gill Pendlebury, Jocelyn Pointon, Bruce and Trish Jefferies, June Mock, Kathy Packwood, Kevin Congdon. Moved Owen, seconded Greg that the apologies be received and sustained. Minutes of 2019 AGM had been circulated by email and were taken as read. Matters Arising: The Chairman apologised for the lack of action on the procurement of updated name badges. This matter will be taken up by the incoming committee. Chairman’s Report: This item had also been circulated by email and was taken as read. The Chairman summarised his report for the benefit of the meeting and moved that the report be received. This motion was seconded by John Godfrey. Club Captain’s Report: This item had also been circulated by email and was taken as read. Tony moved that his report be received and the motion was seconded by Marty Sutherland Financial Report: Maureen Ransley circulated the financial report which showed a surplus for the year which included the modest rally profit. Maureen provided an overview of the accounts. She provided answers to the few matters raised. Neil expressed concern that day-to-day operations of the club cost about $10,000 p.a. Of each member’s subscription, $35.00 was remitted to the branch generating about $2000 in income. He expressed a view that the club should be accumulating a “nest egg” of about 3 years expenses in case we lost our current tenants. Moved Maureen seconded Graham Mock that the Financial Report be received and adopted and that the Secretary write to the Auditor, formally thank her for her work on the

club’s behalf and see if she will act as auditor next year. Election of Officers: Chairman: As there was only one nomination for the position Marty Sutherland was declared Chairman for the coming year. This was marked with acclaim. Club Captain: Again, there was only one nomination for the position and Owen Duncan was declared the Club Captain for the 2020 – 21 year. This too was received with acclaim. Secretary: Chris Smith was the only nomination to this position and once again acclaim greeted this nomination. Committee –. Current members Brent Davidson, Trish Jefferies, Dean Packwood, Murray Stanley, were willing to stand again. With the retiring Chairman an ex-officio member of new committee it was moved that Eric Foley and Tony Mannington be added to the committee. Signatories: Moved Graham Mock, seconded Owen Duncan that Bank account signatories will be the Chairman Martin Sutherland, Treasurer Maureen Ransley and Secretary, Chris Smith; with any two to sign. Remove present signatories, Neil Chave, Lynette Sutherland and Eric Foley. Maureen Ransley and Martin Douglas Sutherland are to be Administrators, via Online Banking. Christopher Simon Smith will be an Authoriser only, via Online Banking. Subscriptions: The matter of subscriptions was discussed briefly. Moved Neil Chave seconded Tony Mannington that the subscriptions remain at the current level. General Business: Constitution: The Chairman gave an overview of the constitutional situation. The proposed constitution was based on a model supplied by VCC NZ and addressed some shortcomings in our present constitution e.g. the lack of provision for Life MAY 2021

Members. All members had been supplied with a copy of the draft. Graeme spoke briefly of the background to the branch. Neil then moved that the proposed constitution be adopted. This was seconded by Graham Mock and accepted by the members. Magazine: Murray Stanley asked the meeting to acknowledge the excellent work done by Dean Packwood on the magazine. This was greeted with acclaim. Life Membership: Brent put forward the view that Life Membership should be accorded to the retiring Secretary who has had almost 40 years membership of the branch.. Graham Mock spoke to this proposal pointing out the work Eric had done on behalf of the club. It was moved Brent Davidson, seconded Graeme Mock that Eric be elected as a Life Member. Carried with acclaim. Eric then spoke to the meeting and expressed his surprise and gratitude. Meeting Times: Barry Hoffman asked the incoming committee to re-consider the meeting times. It was his view that 7.00 p.m. was a better option. The matter will be considered at the next committee meeting. Retiring Officers: Owen expressed his gratitude at the excellent work done by Tony as Club Captain. Maureen also thanked Tony, Neil and the Secretary for their support. Both views were marked by acclaim. Meeting closed 8.15 p.m. Eric Foley Secretary

VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING

PROGRAMME RELEASED Words Greg Terrill, Festival Director While I’m writing this report, we have just gone into lock down again. Hopefully people in future will follow the rules and guidelines and we can carry on in our lives without constant disruptions. Recently we have added more people to the Festival organising committee. Colin Johnston has taken on the role as the competitive day organiser (Tuesday 18th Jan) as well as taking on the role of co-ordinator with the organisers of the Inglewood Street Party. Gaynor Terrill has joined us with the responsibility of looking after Festival merchandise.

STREET PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA Thursday 20 January 4pm - 8pm. As mentioned in my last Beaded Wheels report, we are not having a public open day. Following an approach from Inglewood First, we have taken up their offer to organise a Street Party extravaganza. Inglewood First team organise the entire event for us, so all we have to do is arrive with our vehicles before 4pm. They have a long history in this format of event and have done so annually for many years. The main street will be closed, marquees set up for refreshments and food. Other attractions include live entertainment, children’s activities and photo opportunities, particularly as Inglewood has one of the oldest railway stations in New Zealand. This will be a memorable night, a great opportunity to promote our club, and something you will remember and talk about for many years. We are thrilled to have had the Inglewood First group approach us to host us for this event.

FESTIVAL MOTORING On each of the motoring days (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) your day will start from either Devon Street East or Devon Street West and have the option of a short or a long run. As we don’t want to disrupt early traffic, no vehicles will leave from the TSB Stadium (racecourse}’n the morning. There is no set time to depart from New Plymouth (morning) each day. However, you will be given a time when you will need to be at the lunch stop/ destination as well as an estimated travel time. We have deliberately introduced flexible start times so that you have time if you want to stop and admire any of the attractions along the way.

THE DESTINATIONS Monday 17 January - Destination Tikorangi As the crow flies, Tikorangi is not far from New Plymouth, however you will not MAY 2021

be travelling as the crow flies. The lunch stop at Tikorangi will allow you to meet old friends, make new friends and enjoy this part of Taranaki. Along the way you will learn about some local history including the Maori Wars, and the oil and gas industry. The afternoon is a reasonably short run back to New Plymouth, where you will finish at the TSB Stadium and light refreshments will be available.

Wednesday 19 January Destination Opunake The coastal town of Opunake is our destination and lunch stop. We are hoping that the main street will be closed for us to park our vehicles, although, as this is the main highway, the road closure has yet to be confirmed. From Opunake we head back to New Plymouth via some unique historical sights and magnificent gardens.

Thursday 20 January - Destination Stratford/ Whangamomona There are three routes today. Stratford is the destination for the short and medium routes. For the more motorable vehicles, Whangamomona is the place for you and will afford you the longest day’s motoring you will have. Today, while you have time to see the sights, it’s not a day to go slowly. At the end of this day, we have a Street Party for you.

Friday 21 January - Destination Hawera Hawera is the southern most destination. Your run to Hawera will give you some options to see different attractions along the way. Hawera is our lunch stop and the main street will be closed for us to park our vehicles and support the local shops. The afternoon covers a wide variety of terrain. Some of this is quite hilly and so there are alternative routes to accommodate lower powered vehicles. Be back in New Plymouth in time to spruce up, ready for the Festival Finale.

Tuesday 18 January - Competitive day. This is an optional event. The competitive aspect is timing only. There will be separate routes for the following classes of vehicles. Veteran, Vintage, Post Vintage, Post War. P60, PS0, Motorcycle and Commercial. The starting points for these routes are separate and will be from places of interest. If you prefer, you can have a rest day today or take time out to enjoy the sights of Taranaki.

Entertainment Each night except for Thursday 20 January there will be a variety of top class entertainment at the TSB Stadium. Art Corner The Fiat 500 is a rearengined, four-seat, small city car that was manufactured and marketed by Fiat Automobiles from 1957 to 1975 over a single generation in two-door saloon and two-door station wagon bodystyles. In September 1968 Fiat put on sale the 500 L or Lusso (tipo 110 F/L), a more richly trimmed and better appointed version of the standard 500 F. The 500 L remained on sale until 1972, when the new Fiat 126 was introduced. Perhaps the most obvious new feature of the 500 L were tubular guards protecting the front bumper and the corners of the rear one.

Other model-specific exterior items were a new Fiat badge at the front, redesigned hubcaps, chrome plastic mouldings covering the roof drip rails, and bright trim around windscreen and rear window. MAY 2021
