Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley Chairman’s Report – August 2021 I hope that by now, you have cast your vote for a change in the VCC constitution to allow for online applications for membership. In my view, this ballot has been poorly conducted in that there was no supporting information on the reasons for the change. I have made my views known to VCC NZ, and Linda Duffell, the Office Administrator, has indicated she will pass my thoughts on. I have no doubt that, like me, many of you will read Beaded Wheels and then put it in the recycle bin. To then refer members to content in an earlier edition of the magazine to enable them to vote in an informed manner is regrettable. Despite all the challenges, I hope you have voted. Our branch has been advocating for online applications for quite some time. Hopefully, this option will curry favour with the wider membership. (Right, end of my rant. On to branch stuff) The club night took the form of a mid-year pot luck Christmas Dinner. There were about 50 people present, and a very tasty array of main courses and desserts were consumed. There was not a lot of food leftover! The meal was preceded by a presentation of the proposed rebranding by VCC. While the majority of votes cast on the night were in favour of the change, it has been pointed out to me that a number of members did not vote at all. Some people obviously need more time to think about the idea. This matter will be discussed at the AGM in Christchurch, where we will be represented by our Club Captain, Owen Duncan. While this rebranding idea has been simmering away for some time, not a lot of money has been expended on it.

The club had several cars on display at the Hobby Show 17/18 July with a roster of club members to ensure the cars were secure and to answer questions from the public. Whilst a number of membership application forms disappeared, it is not known at this stage as to whether that translates into actual applications.

The clubrooms continue to be well used by both the branch and by a number of community groups. While we no longer have Massey using the hall for exams (these are now done online), we have picked up the Camera Club one night per month and a church group who use the hall two nights per week for several hours each time. This income offsets the loss of Massey. We have also hosted various one-make car clubs who use our facilities for their club’s annual meeting. In the not-too-distant future, we will need to replace the carpet, which will be a significant cost, but it is important we maintain a good standard for both ourselves and any user group. There have also been occasions where two groups have wanted to use the hall at the same time. This problem has been addressed by referring one group to the adjacent pipe band hall. I look forward to seeing most of you on National Daffodil Day, 22nd August, to raise funds for cancer research. Safe travels Eric

Owen Duncan Club Captain’s Report – August 2021 August begins with The Coffee Club Breakfast on the 1st of the month, and if last month’s breakfast is any indication, this will be another date to keep in mind. Don’t forget to text or phone me to book in - 027 448 2484 or 07 378 8327.

Wednesday the 11th is our popular Fish N Chip / Quiz night starting at 6 pm in the clubrooms, and a member of the committee will ring you for your fish n chip order. Each pack contains two fish and one scoop of chips for around $10.00. Get a team together and join in the fun as we have Terri Foley to test your knowledge this year. AUGUST 2021

The annual Daffodil Rally for the Cancer Society is upon us again. Let’s see if we can better the fantastic outcome of last year when we finished up with a total of close to $1800 for the Cancer Society. On Sunday the 22nd, we will kick start the day with a Show and Shine at the clubrooms at 10.30 am. Representatives from the local branch of the Cancer Society will be in attendance to collect the $10.00 entry fee per car and any other donations. We will also run raffles with all funds going to them. At midday, we will flag the first car away with the run heading down Spa Road, along the lakefront, to the Napier turn off, then along the ETA to the Waikakei roundabout, at which point you can choose to head to the Lava Glass café or head towards Taupo to the Kefi at the Hub café, 415 Huka Falls Road (where the helicopter is at Wairakei). The choice is yours. Arrangements have been made with both these cafes to expect additional patrols. Anyone can join us, and you don’t need a vintage or classic car to participate, so invite your friends and neighbours. On Monday, 23 August, the committee has committed to the delivery of daffodils to various locations around Taupo. If you can assist, please give me a call. 1966 HILLMAN SUPER MINX MK IV 1725 Owned By Marty and Lynne Sutherland, Taupo.

Over the years, we have owned many and varied cars, which are now worth a lot more than we paid at the time. Amongst them were a couple of MK1 Cortina GTs, EH Holdens, Fords, Valiants, a Triumph, MGs, a spitfire, MkIII Zodiac, to name some. At the time, they were run-of-the-mill cars with no special significance. In 2014 we purchased a low mileage (100,000 miles), low ownership (4 previous owners) Hillman Super Minx. I guess I fell in love with it. It wasn’t a supercar like some of the above mentioned but it had a certain charisma.

In 1966 it was first owned by a Mr. and Mrs. Diaper from Blenheim, Registration Number DY4516. In 1970 Mrs. Diaper passed away, and the car was sold to a Mr. Arthur Ross, also from Blenheim. He used it until 1996, when he left it unloved in his garage until 2006. Registration expired in 1997. In 2006 he finally sold it to Cedric Watson, again from Blenheim. Mr. Watson had been trying to buy the car since 2000. The car was reregistered with the number DTP43. Ross and Watson had been friends for years, and a condition of the sale was that the car was to be used for Ross’s granddaughter’s wedding. Watson did some minor panel beating, refurbished the dashboard, repainted the car, and generally gave the girl a good tidy-up as well as the motor. Watson used the car until 2012, when he found the non-power steering was becoming a bit of an issue, so the car was sold to a Robert Almond from Reporoa, who had found the car on Trade Me. Almond and his wife flew to Blenheim to pick up the car then toured the South Island before returning to Reporoa. In 2014 Almond was offered a job in Australia. A friend of his was selling on his behalf and this is when we entered into the old girls life. We purchased the car in 2014. At a later date, we purchased a Holden with the plate MDS242, which is my initials and DOB, so I removed the plates and swapped them over, all legally, and got rid of the DTP43. I would like to get personalised plates with the original number

DY4516, but the exorbitant cost puts me off. Previous owners had spent a lot of money on the car, and believe it or not, all of the receipts had been kept which I now have as part of its history. Don’t ask the cost, I have never totalled it up. I have spent a lot as well and have also kept all the receipts. It’s all part of her life. I have rebuilt the motor twice, the first time it was poorly done, but we still managed to tour the South Island competing in the VCC Easter Rally in Ashburton. We got home without any major problems apart from using gallons of oil, greenies would have loved me. The motor was redone again with a different mechanic, fitted with extractors, new Weber carburettor (replacing the old twin carbs), street cam, electronic ignition, Trident mags, alternator has recently been fitted after the generator gave out, tinted windows all round, exterior sun visor and venetians in the back window. All original parts have been kept so it can be returned to original if ever needed to be. It clips along well and is very comfortable. Compared with modern vehicles it is not fast but keeps up most of the time. During the Taupo VCC Rally in March 2021, with Brent Davidson navigating, we won our P60 class. The week after, Lynne and I drove to Havelock North to the Hillman/Humber AGM, of which we are mem-

bers. I entered it into the show competition and won the President’s Trophy for the nicest/tidiest car, so the old girl is treating us proud. It is now 55 years old and will do us. We have owned many cars in the past, as previously mentioned, but we think she is up there with the best of them. The thing with these cars is that we are only their guardians, and I hope the next owners treat it with as much respect and love as we have. She is a great old lady, and have no intention of selling her – god willing.

THE 2021 FOUNDERS PRINCE HENRY TOUR CROMWELL-RANFURLY-CROMWELL 1 – 3 NOVEMBER 2021

Thank you for considering entering this VCC event. We look forward to your company during this three-day tour of relaxed veteran motoring following the National Veteran Rally. It is being organised by Nevin Gough and Kelly Findlay. Accommodation and lunches during the tour will be the responsibility of the entrant. Evening meals will be at the Ranfurly Hotel while in Ranfurly. No booking has been made just show up and order off the menus. There will be a backup vehicle with trailer following the tour. Monday November 1st: Meet at The Gate at 10am to receive instructions and briefing. We will stay the night in Ranfurly. Tuesday November 2nd: Meet at the Ranfurly Hotel at 9am. We have the use of the Breakfast Room, inside the main doors to the right, all morning briefings will be in there. We stay in Ranfurly again tonight. Wednesday November 3rd: Tour departs from Ranfurly, and returns to Cromwell in the afternoon. Meal and Prize giving will be at 6.00pm at The Gate. Payment for all meals will be direct to the venues at the time. Please book your own accommodation in Ranfurly as soon as possible. Accommodation at the Ranfurly Hotel is limited with a few ensuite rooms, if booking here please mention that you are part of the Prince Henry Tour as they have blocked off all rooms for that week for a month to allow our tour to get in first. The Ferrari F40 (tipo F120) is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car engineered by Nicola Materazzi with styling by Pininfarina. It was built from 1987 to 1992, with the LM and GTE race car versions continuing production until 1994 and 1996 respectively. As the successor to the 288 GTO (also engineered by Materazzi), it was designed to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary and was the last Ferrari automobile personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. At the time it was Ferrari’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car for sale.

The Lamborghini Countach is a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini from 1974 to 1990. It is one of the many exotic designs developed by Italian design house Bertone, which pioneered and popularized the sharply angled “Italian Wedge” shape. AUGUST 2021

Checklist Targa 2021 VCC Scrutineering & Documentation Entrants

Time Trial Entrants-: Please Print & Check Carefully Prior to Event. 1. Scrutineering/Car Safety-:

1. Current Registration; 2. Current WOF; 3. First Aid Kit; 4. Helmets-: Driver/Co-Driver (for open top/soft top cars + cars fitted with roll protection – check padding); 5. Reflective Safety Warning Triangle; 6. Tow Rope/Strop (preferably with clearly visible/identified vehicle towing eyes/straps fitted front & rear); 7. Fire Extinguisher (minimum 1 kg securely mounted to vehicle within reach of driver/co-driver, preferably with two (2) metal quick-release retaining straps); 8. Car Battery securely mounted to vehicle with “live” terminal covered; 9. Headlights (which must be constantly illuminated on low beam in all special stages); 10. Vehicles must have a thorough mechanical check prior to this event, esp Tyres, Brakes & Fluids; 11. Car Tools & Spares.

Friday 29th October: Day 1 (Day 4/Leg 4 of the 5 Day event):

Starts from Whanganui to finish for overnight in Havelock North. 7pm: VCC Time Trial Participation Awards Dinner at the Havelock North Club. The Havelock North Club at 8 Campbell St, Havelock North have offered a buffet meal for approx. $30 + drinks in their function room. Hopefully we can all be there together to enjoy a great meal, share stories & experiences of our event so far, along with presentation of some Participation Awards for our Targa 2021 VCC Time Trial. Itinerary & Accommodation Suggestions Targa 2021 VCC 5 Day Time Trial Updated 14 June 2021. (Some Itinerary details may change slightly, but hopefully this outline helps with your planning). (Accommodation where Anne & I’ve booked is highlighted yellow, with alternate suggestion below).

Sunday 24th October: 2pm, Holden Museum, Hillsborough, New Plymouth

Please arrive at the Holden Museum, 683 Egmont Rd, Hillsborough, New Plymouth by 2pm for our VCC meet & greet, vehicle scrutineering, RallySafe & livery installation. Afternoon tea is available to purchase at the Museum Café. (Check out: https://www.hillsboroughholdenmuseum.co.nz/ for details of this world-class museum, located approx. half way between Egmont Village & the SH3 turnoff between New Plymouth & Bell Block). Monday 25th October (Labour Day):

Time & Venue tba: Documentation for VCC entrants, followed by compulsory driver/co-driver briefing (& car display tba). Overnight: As for Sunday above.

Tuesday 26th October: Day 1 (Leg 1):

Targa 2021 starts from New Plymouth to return there for overnight. Overnight: As for Sunday above.

Wednesday 27th October: Day 2 (Leg 2):

Starts from New Plymouth to return there for overnight. Overnight: As for Sunday above.

Thursday 28th October: Day 3 (Leg 3):

Starts from New Plymouth to finish for overnight in Whanganui. Overnight: Riverview Motel, 14 Somme Parade, Whanganui. Tel: 06 345 2888 Alternate suggestion: Several other good motels nearby.

Friday 29th October: Day 4 (Leg 4):

Starts from Whanganui to finish for overnight in Havelock North. 7pm: VCC Time Trial Participation Awards Dinner at the Havelock North Club. The Havelock North Club at 8 Campbell St, Havelock North have offered us a buffet meal for approx. $30pp + drinks in their function room. Hopefully we can all be there together to enjoy a great meal, share stories & experiences of our event so far, along with presentation of some Participation Awards for our Targa 2021 VCC Time Trial. 7.30am: Targa 2021 Awards Breakfast (Havelock North venue tba), including our VCC Time Trial Competition Awards (Two tickets included with entry fee).
