Chairman’s Report

Marty Sutherland Chairman’s Report – February 2021 I have just returned from the VCC car show day in Rotorua in the area on the corner of Tutanekai St opposite the Ibis Hotel. This is an annual event which is well patronised every year and a worthwhile trip to see a great assortment of cars. About ten of our members were there, and believe it or not, I was approached by two different people wanting to buy my Hillman. Both took my details and are apparently going to ring in the next few days. We’ll see how keen they are?? We have a club run to Wanganui this weekend so looking forward to that – It should be a goodie, thanks to Owen. I also must mention that Kevin Congdon’s Mum passed away last week, and our thoughts go out to Kevin. We are thinking of you mate. Remember, our rally is coming up on 13th March, so get your entries in – which reminds me!! On the 19th and 20th February, we have a Police reunion organised here in Taupo, so it will be good to catch up with old friends who we worked with in Taupo during the 70s and 80s. Most of these we have not seen for many years. I don’t think it will be like functions of 30-40 years ago – maybe early nights with a cup of cocoa, but I somehow doubt it. We will be using the clubrooms on the Friday night for our initial get-together. Lynne and I will be away on holiday from 23rd February to 9th March but will be back in time for the rally.

Club Captain’s Report

Owen Duncan Club Captain’s Report – February 2021 Welcome to 2021. With The Coffee Club breakfast the first VCC event for the year, we had a fantastic turnout, even better for having Club Patron and Life Member Graham and June Mock with us. Also, a visiting family from Wanganui joined us. All up, there were over 20 of us, and a large group from the Taupo Hotrod and Custom Car Club joined us on the domain. The next event is the Club Captain’s run to Wanganui, departing Saturday the 30th of January from Mobil Service Station near the Airport, at 9.00 am. The first stop will be Taihape for a pitstop and coffee. From there, we will travel to Marton to visit Grannies Christmas Grotto, travel to Wanganui, check into accommodation, meet and greet with a chance to discuss the weekend ahead. It should be a great weekend. I have almost completed the club programme for the year, you will find details further in the magazine. Just a reminder, you have 12 months to ready your car for the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring set for January 2022 in New Plymouth. With this event in mind, I hope to have a club night dedicated to assist in the completion of your Vehicle Identification Certificate application if you don’t have one yet. You will need a VIC to participate in formalities.

Coming up in the immediate future, we have the Coffee Club breakfast on the 7th of February, with us remaining on the domain to promote the Taupo Vintage Car Club and increase our membership. This is essentially our open day and a trial at the domain to test interest. I encourage members to bring their vehicles along, the more, the merrier, even if you cannot make the breakfast. We will be on the domain until about 1.00 pm. The following Wednesday, the 10th of February, we have our normal club night. This will be a summer BBQ starting at 6.00 pm. A committee member will ring you in order to ascertain your attendance as the club will be supplying the meats. We are asking those coming to bring either a salad or sweet to contribute towards a shared meal. The following Sunday, the 21st of February, I have planned a club run, which will be a Boot Picnic Pow-wow to a mystery destination. Crack out the picnic hamper, fill it with lunch and a flask, bring seating and or a rug. If you don’t mind walking, bring some sneakers. This is optional. We will meet at the clubrooms at 9.45 am and leave at 10.00 am. The trip is about 100ks one way. The roads are all sealed and easy. You will be given instructions at the Bev & Tony Louis clubrooms before departure. There is a café handy to the destination just in case! Toilets are also available. Don’t forget to get your Club rally entry in before the end of February. We currently have entrants from out of town, but we need your entries too. The rally itself is being run on Saturday the 13th of March. Check out the entry form in this magazine. Barry Hoffman’s 1926 Alvis 12/50 by Barry Hoffman

Specifications: • Body by Cross and Ellis • The 12/50 was built from 1924 to 1931 • 1650cc 4 cylinder overhead valve engine • 55HP with four wheel brakes • 4 speed crash gearbox with right hand gear change • Number built – 4,400 • Top speed 70 miles per hour

This was Australia new, and was imported into New Zealand in the mid1990s. It was then completely restored here over several years. Australia was the largest exporter of Alvis cars in the 1920s, and New Zealand had no agents, and most of the early cars here were private imports. My first experience of the Alvis 12/50 was 25 years ago. A friend of ours took us on a rally in his car in the UK. I was impressed and hoped one day I would find one here.

This car came up for sale nine months ago, and we purchased it from a collector in Whakatane. Since the purchase, I have removed the engine and checked it over, and remedied many oil leaks, and also relined the brakes, etc. We have attended one Alvis event in Blenheim in November. It was to commemorate 100 years since the first Alvis was produced. The car performed well and cruised along nicely at 85 kph and returned 30 miles to the gallon. We look forward to more longer distance rallies in this 95-year-old car.

The fourth generation of the Ford Thunderbird is a large personal luxury car produced by Ford for the 1964 to 1966 model years. This generation of the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off, "formal" look. The only remnant of the Thunderbird's former sporty image was the fact that the standard 390-cubic-inch 300 hp (224 kW) V8 engine needed nearly 11 seconds to push the heavy T-bird to 60 mph (97 km/h). The softly sprung suspension allowed considerable body lean, wallow, and float on curves and bumps. Contemporary testers felt that the Buick Riviera and Pontiac Grand Prix were substantially more roadworthy cars, but the Thunderbird retained its leading market share.

Our team has put together a fantastic event to suit all types of vehicles from the 19th century up to 1990. Our festival village is the base for the week and will have a range of great quality food, drink and entertainment and the roads are made for motoring.
