Chairman’s Report
Marty Sutherland Chairman’s Report – October 2020 Good afternoon everybody, time for another report. On the night of 9th September, Senior Constable Barry Shepherd gave us a very interesting talk on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We also had another exciting activity; one of our long-standing members was awarded a life membership. Here’s a brief history for those who were not present on the night. This branch of the VCC was formed in 1967, consisting of Graeme Mock as Chairman, Phil Andrews as Club Captain, and Jack Hindness as Secretary, plus 16 members. Since this time, we have gone from strength to strength to where we are today. Graeme Mock is now our Patron. It is stipulated in the Constitution that we can only have four life members. Our first life member was Jack Hindness in 1985. The second was Bob Pettigrew in 1998. Thirdly Graeme Mock in 2001 and Joe Ridley in 2016. Upon the passing of Jack Hindness in 2010, Norman Pointon was made a life member in 2013. Unfortunately, Norman passed in 2020, which left a gap for another life membership. OCTOBER 2020

Eric Foley joined the VCC in 1980 and spent two years as Secretary, in 1981 and 1982. He has been involved on and off in various roles and becoming Secretary again from 2016 to 2020. Eric is now our newest life member. Congratulations Eric! We had our annual breakfast run on September 20th, set by Danny and Fiona Jones. The run lasted approximately an hour, culminating back at the clubrooms for breakfast cooked by your Committee. The winners of the run were Elaine Taylor and passenger, second Jan and Kelvyn Trim and third Phil, Deb, and Lucy Stapleton. Well done everyone.
As to our upcoming events these will be mentioned by our Club Captain Owen Duncan. Take care everyone, stay safe and drive carefully. Marty

Breakfast at The Coffee Club has been on the go now for over two years, and on the 6th of September, we had 28 seated. It just keeps getting bigger, but remember to give me a call if you are coming along so I can book sufficient tables to accommodate everyone together. Mobil Lakeview Dealers, Lindsay Ward, and Suzanne Carter had the grand opening of the new service station situated up by the Airport Roundabout on the 11th of OCTOBER 2020

September. About 16 members turned up in their cars for display. The head of Mobil Oil New Zealand, Andrew McNaught, with Allied Petroleum head, Alastair Tennent, were both in attendance for the opening, pictured here with Suzanne. Interesting story – I recently received an email from a guy named Kevin McLean, in his quest to contact his Practical Engineering tutor from Waiopehu College, Levin, 1981. Google search showed that Kelvin Trim was a member of the Taupo Vintage Car Club, so he emailed me for confirmation. Kelvin remembers him well and told me about the land yacht they built from exhaust tubing and mini wheels, and the hours of fun they had with the project. They will be in touch with each other and looking forward to renewing their acquaintances. Club Events to watch out for in October. • Sunday 4th - The Coffee Club Breakfast 8.30 am onwards Please ring me to book your seat. • Wednesday 14th - Club Night Steve Bowden’s talk on Laser Scanning 7.30 pm • Sunday 18th - Club Run - Waimangu Volcanic Valley departing from the clubrooms 9 am Details for the Waimganu Volcanic run are as follows: The journey is to Waimangu Volcanic Valley, a New Zealand Highly Awarded Eco-Tourism Destination. It is about an hour run from Taupo. Entry to the valley is $20, with either a 4k walk to Rotomahana Lake, or a free shuttle bus down to

the lake, and return. There is a boat trip around the lake to points of interest, an additional cost of $20. Should you hold a Gold Card (thanks to Winston Peters), you get both for $35. Both the shuttle bus and boat run at 45-minute intervals, so don’t be too concerned about missing out. Being at COVID level 1, the numbers on shuttle and boat will not be restricted but may be subject to change. The information centre and shop are full of goodies, and the café has amazing food and coffee. You can elect to just come for the drive if you wish. Nothing is compulsory, but bookings are essential, the valley can get their staffing right. When we have seen enough of the valley, it is back to Taupo to complete the day. A committee member will ring you for confirmation so we can make bookings. Don’t forget the club captains run coming up over Auckland Anniversary Weekend (a weekend of touring in Wanganui). Something for everyone. It should be a fun weekend with plenty of options. Check out the notice in the magazine.

The Club Captain’s Run to Wanganui 30th 31st January 1st February Auckland Anniversary Weekend Wanganui has some beautiful examples of Edwardian and Victorian Architecture and a real sense of history. It’s complemented by the city’s strength in the arts with galleries and quirky cafes occupying many of the heritage buildings and modern street art taking advantage of the big walls.
With the activities booked, it is time to commit and arrange your accommodation. I have listed below five options that I feel might suit you all, keeping in mind their close proximity to the centre of town. You may not all be able to find accommodation together however, they are all only a 2minute drive from each other. OCTOBER 2020

Depart Taihape for Marton and a visit Grannies Grotto to view the best private collection of Christmas lighting you will ever see in one place, $5.00 each. Off to Wanganui and check into your accommodation in time for drinks before dinner. Sunday 31st, after breakfast, we depart for Fordell to visit a private car collection and an amazing parts department, from which parts are shipped all around New Zealand. About a 2 hour stop, $5.00 charge each Return to Wanganui for lunch. After lunch, we head north of Wanganui to Westmere, the private museum of Richmond Harding, to view his Tiger Moth, Spitfire, and a mass of memorabilia from his days as General Manager of Wanganui Aero Works and his many year’s crop spraying and top dressing around Wanganui and the Central Plateau in a Fletcher. This may be about another 2-hour visit.
Ok, so now back to into town with enough time to have a couple of drinks before dinner.

In the morning, we can meet as a group at Mud Ducks Café on the riverside. The ladies can look around the galleries and boutique shops. Glass Works NZ is in this area where you can blow your own paperweight, or watch the professional glassblowers at work. An amazing shop with fantastic viewing—all within easy walking distance. It has been arranged for the men to visit Wanganui VCC, who are opening their clubrooms and parts shed for viewing. It will then be time to wind up, either have lunch together or head back home. The 1975 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 was the 16th running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was an endurance race for touring cars complying with CAMS Group C regulations. The event was held at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst, New South Wales on 5 October 1975 over a distance of 1006.036 km (163 laps × 6.172 km). The race was Round 3 of the 1975 Australian Manufacturers’ Championship. The race was won by Peter Brock, his second win, and Brian Sampson for his only Bathurst 1000 win. The pair drove their Gown - Hindhaugh entered Holden LH Torana SL/R 5000 L34 to a two-lap victory, avenging the previous year’s result when the pair built up a record six-lap lead before suffering terminal engine failure on lap 118 with Brock at the wheel. Another dealership entered L34 Torana, the Ron Hodgson Motors car of Bob Morris and Frank Gardner, finished second with the Holden Dealer Team L34 Torana of Colin Bond and Johnnie Walker completing a clean sweep of the top three places for Holden.

Our full timeNorth trial event be over&5finishing days (Tuesday to Saturday), Islandwill – starting in the Auckland area and we’ll also offer a 2 day time trial for the last 2 days, (Friday/Saturday), to enable those who can’t join us for the full event to enter for the last 2 days, (as we tried to do this year, but all cancelled due to Covid-19). The route is yet to be finalised, but heads up it will be central North Island, with a good chance it may start in Taranaki and finish in the Hawkes Bay. p
