Chairman’s Report
Marty Sutherland Chairman’s Report – August 2020 Well, it’s back to monthly reports again. I am a bit out of practice on Lynne’s laptop. I am used to keyboards being on an angle not flat on a table, so a bit of swearing is going on. I am not a computer geek by any stretch of the imagination. I am not bad on my I pad though. Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous committee for the work they have done, especially Neil; Chairman, Tony; Club Captain and Eric; Secretary who held this position for the 7-8 years (who did a wonderful job). I do not have much to say this month as I have only been in this role 2-3 weeks, and I’m still feeling my way through. I would like to thank Owen Duncan, our new Club Captain, and Chris Smith, our new Secretary, for putting their hands up and taking on these roles. Maureen is staying on as our Treasurer, and what a wonderful job she does. The rest of the committee remains the same as before. The club had a good run last weekend, organised by Owen and this is covered in Owen’s report. August 12th is a Fish & Chip and Quiz night, plus another couple of activities will be taking place. August 23rd will be a Daffodil Run, and details of this will be covered by Club Captain Owen. I was talking today (24th July) to Jan Watkins, who some of you may remember from the club. Her husband Harold is in Liston Heights Hospital with a broken AUGUST 2020

hip and is fairly poorly. When I first joined the club 20 years ago(?), Harold and Jan had a very nice Sunbeam Rapier, and after selling this, they purchased a Datsun 120Y, which they owned for a number of years. Our best wishes go out to Harold and Jan and wish Harold a speedy recovery. Jan is still in Summerset. To be honest, I can’t think of much more to mention at this stage. I am bound to have forgotten something. It is my first of many, but I would like to leave you with this bit of wisdom: You would have all heard of Karl Marx, a Philosopher and a leading light in the communist world. But not many of you would have heard of his sister, Onya Marx, the inventor of the starting pistol. Marty

Club Captain’s Report
Owen Duncan Club Captain’s Report – August 2020 With the AGM done and dusted, the Taupo VCC has a new President in Marty Sutherland, Chris Smith, in the role of Secretary and I have taken over from Tony as Club Captain. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Tony, Neil, and Eric for all the work they have put in over the last few years in making the club what it is today. July started with The Coffee Club Breakfast, and the turn out of cars on display is great to see on the lakefront. Please note the start time has changed to 8.30 am. As we are getting more turning up each month, please ring or text me as I need to inform the Club of numbers late Friday afternoon.

On Sunday, 12 July, Bayleys invited VCC members to the Grand Opening of the Seven Oaks development at Kinloch for a show and shine. We parked up on a site overlooking Whangamata Bay with a stunning view of the lake and mountains. The prices started at $250,000, and the section we were on had a price tag of
$1.25million. Kelvin Trim and I thought it was the perfect place to build a twobedroom house with ten car garage /workshop. The folk organizing the promotion made a presentation of Café Baku vouchers to Kelvin and Jan for the Peugeot powered Lotus, and Heather and I picked up ‘best car’ with our 1934 Chevy Coupe. As the day was cloudy, cold and wet the coffee and muffins Eric arranged went down a treat, thank you Eric. Sunday the 19th saw 16 cars turn up for the club run, which was the first event I have arranged. ROUND ABOUT TAUPO CHALLENGE started from the clubrooms at 10.30 for a drive around Taupo

and Wairakei Terraces, to finish at the airport for coffee and light lunch. The points were tallied up, and Neil and Lorraine finished 3rd, Danny and Fiona 2nd with Phil, Deb and Lucy on the most points, well done. We travelled around 12 roundabouts and covered 41 km. At the last committee, meeting planning started in earnest for our 20-21 club program for you to enjoy, so keep an eye on the club magazine. The next event will be Fish n Chip and Quiz Night to be run by Chris Smith, so keep Wednesday 12th of August free. Sunday 23rd August, we will hold our annual Daffodil Run, the destination to be confirmed. See you at the clubrooms 12th August at 6pm, and we will ring you for your fish n chip order. Whilst browsing Trade Me – note to self, this is an expensive thing to do – I came across a little car that just begged to be looked at. I had spotted a “T Car” for sale in Thames and what a pretty little car she was. So I dispatched Fiona, who was coming home from Auckland, to detour through Thames and take a closer look. Well, the reality wasn’t quite the same as the advertising, but the interest was born. So many weeks later on Trade Me, I found another one to look at, and we were off to Whakatane. Now this one was right on the money and still owned by the original builder. So with the normal haggling and sweating on our offer we were the

proud owners of the ‘poor mans’ sports car. A 1955 MG TF Kit car. Not strictly a ‘vintage or classic car,’ but in the sum of its parts, it is actually classic – just in different ages and in different locations of the car. Our Lucy was born and named after the ballad of Lucy Jordan because -At the age of thirty seven She realized she’d never ride Through Paris in a sports car With the warm wind in her hair And he led her down to the long white car that waited past the crowd At the age of thirty seven She knew she’d found forever As she rode along through Paris With the warm wind in her hair What is a ‘T Car’? Well, many of you have asked, so here’s a brief explanation. It was a kit made by Kit Kars of Auckland from the mid-80s, designed as a tribute to the MG TF rather than as a replica. Using a Triumph Herald as a donor car for the running gear and an engine of their choice, the owner then just had to bolt on the fibreglass body to create the new T Car. Not much different than a Shelby cobra replica really, it’s just a lot cheaper!

So with an engine from 1974, running gear from mid-1960s and kit from 1988, she is truly a ‘classic’ car. Back in 1988, when Lucy was being built, the owner heard that the rules were about to change on the registration of vehicles. The requiring of a lot more things like a VIN plate and compliance in 1990, so Lucy was first registered in 1990 but interestingly, she was registered whilst still in pieces, and that was perfectly legal! We picked her up, and with only a 5-hour drive home and dozens of rests, from Whakatane to Taupo, we discovered she had ‘slight’ radiator problem. With only two cores still working, this was the first job to be tackled with... the complete removal of the cooling system. The radiator was beyond repair, so a new aluminium one was purchased, and some modifications done to clear the steering rack and moved forward to add an electric fan - job done. The next job was a complete service including grease and oil change, fuel lines changed, and painting the undersides and wheel wells. One of the other jobs to do was to approach the NZTA to determine if she needed an LVV compliance

plate inspection. It turns out that as she had never been deregistered she didn’t require the LVVT plate, so one big expense was spared. What we did need was the LVVTA declaration certificate that was proof of the build, and its modifications prior to 1991 had been certified. Now reliable, or as reliable as old cars can be, the fun began. Since then, we have been working on the ‘shiny bits’ just to jazz her up. I took her rocker cover to Hamilton and had that chromed too – that is definitely just for show. Driving lights, headlight stone guards, touching up paint, we also put on personalised number plates, and therein lies one of our biggest mistakes. As ‘oldies’ the plate (OMG TF) stands for One MG TF or even Oh My Goodness an MG TF. But we forgot that the youngsters of today have a slightly different interpretation of ‘TF’. The first sign we may not have thought this through well enough was when our 20 something neighbour said, ‘I get the OMG part, but why “the F*^$”? Oh my alright!

A friend of ours also presented us with an early MG steering wheel and gear stick knob – now that is a true friend! We managed to find a boss kit that married up to the Herald steering shaft, and we added the new wheel. Other jobs have included replacing axle Uni joints, changing bush’s and bearings, and added air shocks. This wasn’t totally necessary however, she isn’t the most comfortable ride in the world, so with the removal of one leaf spring and the added air shocks, she rides a little better now. We use the car a lot over summer and have even taken part in T Car rallies in Martinborough and joined in runs to Hamilton,

Waiouru, and Rotorua. Definitely not designed to be used in winter, we tend to pick and choose the weather windows because with no heater and no windows, it can make for a very cold drive, and we look like polar bears when all rugged up with our winter gear. However, it’s truly wind in the hair motoring, and no one can resist windy roads with the top down and the sun shining. She does, however, have an aversion to hills and runs out of puff very quickly, but it’s all part of the fun. For a poor man’s sports car, Lucy has provided us with many hours of enjoyment, and although not a purist car, she not only makes us smile but also everyone we pass. We love letting people sit in her and get photos done, and knowing that our pretty little car brings a smile to someone’s face is worth everything. Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial – Breaking News The Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial is now being run with two event options-: 1. The 4 day time trial starting Albany, Auckland Thursday 15th October 2020, travelling over closed tarmac road stages to overnight in Whangarei, before returning via closed road stages to overnight in Ellerslie Friday 16th October. 2. A 2 day time trial starting Ellerslie, Auckland Saturday 17th October 2020. This is a totally new event with a significantly reduced entry fee aimed at VCC members who wish to enjoy an outstanding Targa VCC event over a weekend. On Saturday 17th October, both 2 and 4 day entrants travel over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to overnight in Whitianga, where all VCC entrants, friends & family are invited to join for a meal together at the Mercury Bay Club, and where we’ll also be presenting some fun participation awards. Sunday 18th October will see all of us returning over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to event finish & prize giving dinner in Pukekohe. The Targa VCC Time Trial 4 day & all new 2 day event gives VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars an outstanding opportunity to test their driving & timekeeping skills over closed tarmac stages, safe in the knowledge that they’re all driving in the same direction from start intervals, with nothing coming towards them. It’s not a race, and no special car modifications (roll cage etc), are required. So nostalgic! I think that just about everyone can relate to this wonderful scene. Those long hot summer days spent working on your set of wheels, just to keep them running... luxury was to have a shed to work in. My dad’s shed was always full of essential items and no room for the car, Ahhh! the 60’s, they were the days. The MG P-type is a sports car that was produced by MG from 1934 to 1936. This 2-door sports car used an updated version of the Wolseley Motors-designed and made overhead camshaft, crossflow engine, used in the 1928 Morris Minor and previously fitted in the J-type Midget of 1932 to 1934, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed non-synchromesh gearbox. The chassis was a strengthened and slightly longer version of that used in the J-type with suspension by halfelliptic springs all round with rigid front and rear axles. The two-seat car had a wheelbase of 87 inches (2210 mm) and a track of 42 in (1,100 mm). AUGUST 2020
