Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – June 2020 The club committee was able to meet in May at the clubrooms for the first time since the lockdown, and we are now planning to hopefully arrange a club run in July. If all is well with the containment of Covid-19 by then, we may be able to look towards a club night in the following month. Apart from that, the lockdown and now the move to level 2, has allowed some move back to how things used to be. The AGM and a possible date remains a work in progress. Again, if we do move back to level 1, the committee can look at a date once this point is reached. I’ve been undertaking some winter maintenance with the Rover, and it has recently had a service along with some detailed work at home, so it’s all ready for the next run. Hopefully, all members have used the time at home to get all those little jobs you have been planning to do on your cars now completed as spring is just around the corner! As you will be aware, many of the national events have now been either cancelled or postponed to another future date. Probably the biggest event on the horizon was the 2021 National VCC International Rally scheduled for early 2021 in New Plymouth. This has now been reset for the same time in 2022 – about another 18 months time. One of the local casualties of the virus is the annual Hobbies Expo, usually scheduled for July and we have received advice this has been cancelled. This was one of the iconic events in Taupo and one that the VCC always supported. Look forward to seeing it all up and running next year. In the meantime, please stay safe and we will hopefully be able to organise a run in the next couple of months or so as the regulations improve. Neil JUNE 2020

Those Club Members that were wishing to go to the Festival of Historic Motoring in January 2021, New Plymouth, it is now postponed until January 2022. Please note that the bookings at New Plymouth for accommodation for the Festival of Historic Motoring have been transferred to the new dates. Sunday, 16th January 2022 to Friday, 21st January 2022 We still have 16 units put aside for us. Trish Jefferies has advised us that we will have to sort out at some time how many will still be required. No hurry we now have until middle of 2021 to sort it out. Trish is only taking names at this stage, and when the time is right you will book direct with our accommodation provider. Plenty of time to think about attending.

Club Captain’s Report
Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – June 2020 How are we all coping? It now appears that the country is slowly getting back to some sort of normal with the opening up on larger groups being able to get together, while remembering we are still level 2. At our May committee meeting, lots of discussion around what our future will look like. We have come to the conclusion that the Club will remain closed to our members until the end of June. At our June committee meeting, we will review what our plans will be. Maybe reopening the Clubrooms for Club nights/Club days in July and beyond. July is usually a busy time for the Club with the Hobbies Expo, but again we have to inform you that the Club received advice from the Taupo Model Railway Club inc that this year’s Hobbies Expo has been cancelled. It’s sad as this is one of our major Club events of the year and well supported by our Club members enjoying the Hobbies Expo spread over two days, chatting about our cars on display. Our thoughts go out to Mike Litoiff and his team at the Model Railway Club and looking forward to being involved again next year. Suggestions put forward at the committee meeting; we may just have an impromptu run, say down to the new Boat Marina at Motuoapa, picnic lunch. Meet at the Clubrooms and follow the instructions handed out. Keep our eye out for emails. As the committee has not yet set a date for our AGM, I personally will stay on as Club Captain until we do have our AGM, and I am sure that my fellow committee members will be doing the same. COVID-19 has undoubtedly made a difference in many people’s lives. Pam and I had plans that we would celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends, but that didn’t happen. We allowed our son and his family into our “bubble” at the end of lockdown 3 as they needed someone to look after their kids while our daughter in law went to Rotorua to give birth to a healthy baby girl, Aliza. Also, to celebrate our 50th year of married bliss, we were planning a trip Scandinavia, Wales, for a Narrowboat Holiday, then back to Australia for a Model A Rally in Ballarat and then home. All very exciting and looking forward to possibly our last major overseas adventure. We were hopeful that it might just go ahead, and this COVID would also go away. But unfortunately, things have been turned upside down, and we will be stuck fast in NZ. Fortunately, through our Travel agent, we had taken out good insurance policies, and if all goes to plan, we will be getting our money back. Members, please be patient, and we will get back to normal as soon as it is safe for all our members. Also, other groups that use our Clubrooms are waiting for advice when they too can return. We have purchased hand sanitizer, and sanitizer wipes to be used to wipe down benches and tabletops. Hand sanitizer has been placed on the kitchen wall next to the dishwasher, and we will be setting up 2 Hand Sanitizer Station as you enter the main part of the Clubrooms. To keep everybody safe we would appreciate that you use them!! Have you “clicked” onto the Facebook page of the Vintage Car Club of NZ group. Some very interesting stories and photos of past cars and you learn about the history of the Vintage Car Club. Remember, when things get back to normal, you will be the first to know when our Club Activities will resume. Watch out for those emails. Stay safe. Cheers Tony

Model A’s Mixing with Model T’s

On Saturday the 8th of February, our journey to the start (Morrinsville) of the Pacific Highway Run to Gisborne began from our home town of Taupo. Arriving at the Douglas residence on Saturday afternoon, it was time to freshen up before heading over to the Webster’s for our BBQ dinner and meet up with our fellow traveling companions. Arriving in Morrinsville on Sunday morning to check who’s who and to see what everybody was driving. Nice to see a sprinkling of Model A’s lining up, so our Model A ‘Dora” wasn’t alone. After the usual briefing, it was time to start our engines and follow the very comprehensive Rally Road Directions (Day 1) to Whakatane, 128 miles away. Traveling through Walton/ Richmond Downs towards Matamata brought back memories of my childhood where my parents had a Dairy Farm. All participants were provided with a packed lunch (daily), and at the Southern end of Lake Rotoiti, Korokitewao Bay, we were able to pull over and picnic under

the shoreline trees. I could have stayed there for much longer, enjoying the break, just chilling out, but it was time to push on for the last leg towards Whakatane. Monday morning dawned fine and clear, but we could see we had received a little rain overnight, and “Dora” decided she wasn’t going anywhere. 6 volts wasn’t quite enough, so thanks to Mike, 12 volts surely fired her into action for Day 2, Whakatane to Hicks Bay. 110 miles. This is the second time we have taken “Dora” on a Model T Road Trip around the East Cape, always love travelling around the coast, catching the Pacific Ocean on the left between steep hill climbs and descent back to sea level. We were welcomed onto Omaio School by the pupils, where we had our lunch stop. Taking the pupils of the school for a ride in our Model T’s and A’s was a highlight of the kid’s day.
One young pupil asking me if a Ford Falcon was older than my Model A? Ford Falcons are probably the car of choice on the coast. Arriving at Hicks Bay after another hot day travelling was time to relax over a cool drink. As our notes said, “Well done! You have completed Day 2, time to rest, and we will see you at dinner.” Day 3 dawned fine, and again we were looking forward to another hot day driving from Hicks Bay to Gisborne (105 miles). Lunch stop at the Hatea Rangi School and again the highlights for children, taking them for car rides around the School grounds. We then Pushed onto Gisborne after our lunch stop and checking into our motel for the next five nights. The next three days, we were in the hands of local Model T member, Mark Dunn and family and friends, that helped Mark to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Day 1 was travelling to Captain Cook’s landing spot some 250 years ago and up to the top of Kaiti Hill for a photoshoot and look out over the city. Then onto

The Arboretum for morning tea and a stroll through the homestead gardens, arriving at the Rere Falls for our lunch stop. With little rain, the Falls were not flowing to their best. On the way back towards Gisborne, Mark showed us his adventurous side, by showing us how to Rob and Karen's ukelele entertainment assisted tackle the Rere Rockside, but I by Rod and Scarlett. think some guys were more interested in seeing the young ladies tackling the slide.

Day 2, we headed out towards Nuhaka over the Morere Hill, and this caused concern about how our brakes would handle it. Still, everybody arrived at the Local Marae, where we were welcomed by the Nuhaka School Children, and they served morning tea. Our lunch destination was the Rocket Cafe on Mahia Penninsula. No, we couldn’t see the Rocket Launch Site. JUNE 2020

Day 3, was an interesting day traveling out to Tolaga Bay and a visit to a local ‘Horse Whisperer’. What an amazing experience showing how he breaks horses in and retrains their brain into our way of thinking. Sorry no camera or video shots to be taken. Lunch stop out at Tolaga Bay Wharf and a walk to the end. We could see the sign of many years of being pounded by the sea. So interesting to see how much longer they will keep it open for public use. Being another very hot day travelling and a lot less mileage, it allowed us to be back for the Model T AGM. On Saturday, the Model T Club combined with the Gisborne VCC, and we all took part in their Three Rivers Rally. Considering Gisborne has large flat areas growing a variety of crops, we still had plenty of hills to climb and descend over 20 miles of metal. Lunch stop at the Tahunga Golf Club. This was a great lunch stop, no city Golf Club here. Sheep mown fairways and greens. Back to Gisborne for a steam ride on the only surviving Wa Class Locomotive in the world and one of the highlights was the rail crossing on Gisborne Airports main runway, this is the only one of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. Spending five days in Gisborne, traveling to parts we would not normally travel, was a great experience together as a team. Model T and A together. Okay, we had a few hiccups, but most Crossing Gisborne Airport main runway. got motoring again, but one couple in particular probably had their fair share of breakdowns. Alan and Helen driving their lovely restored 1926 Pickup seemed to have a few more than most, some days finishing up on tail-end Charlies trailer. With the support and advice that Alan took on board, he always got going again. But unfortunately, on our way home, Alan struck another problem, and it was sad to see that after all the effort put into the car during the week, it had to be trailered home To Alan and Helen you put up a great fight. Let’s hope you have managed to sort the problems and we see you on future “Runs.”

Pam and I had ten wonderful days travelling with Model T’s, and as always, we enjoyed every minute. Special thanks to the Pacific Highway Team getting us to Gisborne and home again. We appreciate the work that goes in organising these events. Thank you Mark and your team of helpers for taking up the challenge of organising the Model T Rally/AGM, you did a great job looking after forty-two cars and keeping everybody on track. Mark, you must have talked to the weather gods. Long hot days in the driver’s seat, and of course, some grumpy people by the end of the day! It must have been the weather. Thanks to Gisborne VCC, Pam and I can now tick of The Three Rivers Rally, traveling to parts of Gisborne like the remote Golf Club for our lunch stop. Arriving back at Taupo after traveling over 1000 miles, “Dora” is now having a well-earned rest before the Taupo VCC Rally. I hope to catch up again soon. Cheers, Tony and Pam Mannington

Barry’s Morgan
Barry and Vivienne Hoffman, who moved to Acacia Bay three years ago, own this magnificent 1951 Morgan F4 3 wheeler. Barry is a keen classic car collector and has two other 4 wheeler Morgans

The ‘F’ stands for Ford-powered and the ‘4’ means four seater. This 3 wheeler was sold new in New Zealand by J Dales Motor Cycle shop in Karangahape Road, Auckland. A total of three F4 3 wheelers were sold by them in 1951. All three cars have survived and are restored, two in New Zealand and the other one in Australia. This car has only had four owners since it was new. The first owner has told us he had to travel long distances in the 1950s. He was a student and used to travel from Auckland to Palmerston North to attend Massey University, over 300 miles each way.

We purchased the car in poor condition twenty years ago, after it having been off the road for thirty years. How big a job is it to restore a 3 wheeler you may ask? I thought a small car with three wheels would be fairly simple. It turned out to be more complex than a 4-wheel sports car and took three years to complete. Its The first owner was a surfie and built an original factory fitted Ford 10 engine ingenious boat rack – we decided against keeping this option powers the car, 3-speed gearbox and chain drive to the single rear wheel. It can cruise at 80 km/h, the legal speed to travel from the Bay into town. The Morgan Motor Company started building 3 wheeler vehicles in 1909, 110 years ago, and produced them in various forms until 1952. The steel body-overwooden frame cycle cars were sold to people who previously rode motorcycles and sidecars. They were a bit more usable as they had four seats and a canvas roof. In the UK, they could be driven on a motorcycle licence. Registration fees were also a lot cheaper than a 4-wheeled car. Many thousands were sold in the UK, and they remained popular until the Austin 7 arrived; a competitor that was a similar price for a lot more comfort. The 3 wheeler was discontinued in 1952, but Morgan carried on producing fourwheeled sports cars, and they still do after 110 years. The 3 wheeler was again revived in 2012. Model A Ford Club Christmas Party Weekend

Getting everyone parked at the Cosy Corner Holiday Park
On the long weekend of Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 1, the North Island (New Zealand) Model A Ford Club held our annual Christmas Party. The NIMAFC has a broad membership located around New Zealand’s North Island. Some members travel up to 200 miles to attend events. We hatched our plan to hold celebrations in the Bay of Plenty beachside town of Mount Maunganui, some 135 miles southeast of Auckland. Putting together the team to assist in the weekend activities wasn’t hard, as everyone wanted to be involved. Greg and Vicki, who run the Cosy Corner Holiday Park at Mount Maunganui, opened up the park at the end of their off season. This enabled our members to stay as a group, using the Holiday Park for most of our accommodations and facilities, including a covered barbecue area. JUNE 2020

With over 70 percent of the group arriving on the Friday afternoon, we enjoyed a catchup time over drinks, then went down to the local RSA (Returned Service Association) clubrooms for a delicious evening meal of seafood chowder, roast meats, vegetables, and an array of desserts.

Come Saturday morning, everybody was keen to get going, starting with a photo shoot by the local Bay of Plenty Times newspaper, which in conjunction with the holiday park, held a “tin food” collection for the local food bank.
Our group donated more than 80 cans, and the NIMAFC, as well as the Model A Ford, received great publicity. Now it was time to start the engines and head out on a run, driving down the beachfront and through the Village Shopping Centre of Mount Maunganui toward our goal to have a picnic lunch at an organic avocado orchard a few miles south of the town of Katikati. Doug and Linda, our hosts for the day, explained in great detail how they run their orchard, which started when Doug planted his first trees some 40 years ago. Now the trees bear the fruits of lots of hard work. After a very enjoyable picnic lunch — and many people purchasing a quantity of avocados to take home — it was time

to head back to the holiday park to engage in some late afternoon activities. The Hubley Track was set up, and racing began with large number of members taking part.After fast and furious racing, the winners were announced. Greg Davidson, the camp boss, had the fastest car and overall winner. The ladies’ fastest racer award went to Rae Emus.

Doug, our avocado man supplied three avocados each to 14 people for a Master Chef Challenge to see who could come up with the best guacamole. Doug, our Chief Judge and assisted by Linda, tasted and came up with our three winners. During our happy hour before dinner, we all sampled the guacamoles. With Christmas decorations up and dinner tables set and decorated, it was time to get the ham out of the oven and start serving our Christmas dinner. As always, Santa Claus showed up later in the evening and, to the amazement of the children, handed out lots of goodies.
Model A’s, their people, and a break for lunch — a great combination anywhere around the world.
After a great weekend of beautiful spring weather, the activities came to a close on Sunday when everybody headed off home, traveling to the north, south, east and west.
