Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – December 2019 As November rushes through towards Christmas we are now thinking about 2020 and what we need to plan for next year with our annual Open Day and summer BBQ. But firstly in November, we held the Ladies Night and this was by all accounts a great success. The men took a drive out to Bruce & Trish Jefferies’ facility where Bruce keeps most of his car collection under lock & key. It was an excellent opportunity to take a close look at some of Bruce’s cars and share with him the

histories as well as the challenges with getting some of the cars back on the road. After this, the men returned to the clubrooms where a club dinner was served. Thanks to the ladies that put a huge effort into making this night a success and the ladies also in the kitchen that served a great meal. Later in the month, a group travelled north to Cambridge to visit Ross Bros car collection. The ‘Club Captain’s Run travelled north on the Saturday morning of November 16th arriving at Ross Bros near Cambridge to be met by one of the family business owners and given a tour of the museum that is decked out in true 1950’s style. Lots of great cars from the USA and other parts of the world and even a Bentley Azure convertible. From here we moved into the next building where there is another outstanding display of earthmoving equipment and featuring one of the largest bulldozers in the world. There was a range of tractors and fire engines as well as a 1920’s garage and even a V12 Rolls Royce Merlin (Spitfire) engine that is under a rebuild for start-up at the Ross Bros Christmas party. After this, we were given a tour of the workshops and machine shop to get an idea of

some of the massive rebuild work this company undertakes on heavy earthmoving equipment. Then for lunch, some went off to the Velodrome and others headed to the Hamilton Gardens for a picnic lunch. A number stayed over for the Saturday night to have a look at the Waikato VCC Swap meet at Karapiro on the Sunday. A great weekend away and everyone enjoyed the Ross Bros museum. With Christmas now upon us don’t forget the Christmas Party scheduled for Saturday, December 7th. This year we are holding at the club room to keep costs down as we have a local caterer to do the work and also it means its BYO so you can bring & enjoy your favourite beer and wines and realistic costs. If you are planning to come please pay the amount into the clubs account and remember to include your name. Also, we shall again be part of the annual Christmas parade so we need everyone’s car to turn up on December 14th – more details in this newsletter. The Rally committee also met in November and with the course now set and all the design work completed by Dean we are already to start marketing this event to other clubs. Give some thought to entering the 2020 Rally as it is now one of the major iconic events on the club’s calendar. Finally, to all members & families – have a great Christmas & a Happy New Year! Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – December 2019 Remember this will be our last newsletter for 2019, Please note the program over the month of December, January and into February. We all need a rest after a busy year and the next newsletter should be available at the end of January. As you see there are a few things you should be aware of.

• Don’t forget Christmas Dinner at the Clubrooms, Saturday the 7th of December, from 6.00 pm. Please pay into Club bank account to reserve your seat. • Taupo Christmas Parade, we are waiting for confirmation and will let you know by email. • Club Christmas Morning Tea, bring a plate and a friend. To be advised by email. • January annual Rotorua Lakefront Car Show. Meet at Clubrooms at 9.00 am on Sunday the 19th of January. February always a big month, check the coming events page. Unfortunately, my health didn’t allow me to attend the Ladies’/ Men’s night in November. Many thanks to the ladies that brought along their “Hobbies” to share with our Club Members. Thanks to Bruce for opening up his “Toy Shed” to show our menfolk what has been going on behind closed doors. Bruce’s passion for restoring his cars to very high standards. It was good to see the finished Model A Roadster purring along toward Tuakau last weekend. A completed round trip with no roadside seminars.

Special thanks to Maureen, Pam, Trish, and Eric who took charge of the kitchen duties and others that helped. Always a popular choice for our ladies’ night meal, A ham, chicken, buns, and salad goes down a treat. Club Captain weekend away to Cambridge to visit the Muscle Car Garage at Ross Bros went off well. Cars traveling to Cambridge and then on to Hamilton Gardens and others doing their own thing. A group of us opted to stay in Cambridge overnight, dining together and in the morning heading off to the Waikato VCC Swap meet. Another successful Club Weekend away. Who has got ideas for the next one? Referring back over the Club year I think the committee has done a good job putting together our Club Nights, Club Days with the weather being kind to us throughout the year and allowing us to get our cars out and about. It’s now time to “sign” off for the year and I will catch up with everyone at our Christmas Dinner. To all our members and friends, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and to those on the not so well list, get out and enjoy family and friends over the Christmas and New Year break and may 2020 bring health and happiness. Reliks’ Journey from Christchurch to Taupo Owen Duncan The journey with the 1934 Chev Coupe named ‘Reliks’ started when I spotted it for sale in the Beaded Wheels monthly magazine. After looking and dreaming about owning it for a month or so I rang Kevin Campion, the owner, and asked about its state of restoration. He informed me he purchased it from way up north sight unseen and had it transported to Christchurch. During his ownership, he had the motor and

three-speed non-synchromesh gearbox re-conditioned which took him and a mate four years. After the second phone call, I asked if he would drive it to Picton where I would meet him. But my son, Chris, thought it would be much wiser to fly down and check it out first. So, away Chris and I went. On arrival at Kevin’s home, I instantly knew I had to have the little gem. We drove it around the block, getting totally lost. Thank goodness for Google Maps! I transferred the money and drove to the nearest gas station to fuel up, pick up a couple of bottles of water and headed to Picton. Chris spent the rest of the day with his partner and was to fly to Wellington to meet me and ‘Reliks’ to continue the trip back to Taupo. Unfortunately, no flights were available so he flew to Palmerston North where we had left his car. I undertook the complete journey home on my own! I was very nervous, to say the least about driving 900 kilometres on my own in a car 85 years old, in pouring rain and wipers that are about as effective as having none at all. Can’t beat Rain X. When I drove to the ferry terminal in Picton the lady in the ticket office told me it was the most beautiful car she had ever seen and gave me priority boarding which meant I was first on the boat and then first off in Wellington. Despite the rain, the journey to Picton along the Kaikoura coast was a highlight for me in this stunning little coupe. Everywhere I stopped folk would stop and ask where I was heading. When I said Taupo most looked stunned and wished me luck. Driving from Wellington to Wanganui I kept thinking this can’t be true as this Chevy was a dream to drive. Gear changes were still a challenge for me, double the clutch and find the right groove. 50mph were easy for her and she never missed a beat.

I spent the night in Wanganui to catch up with my mates who were keen to check out this darling. Having their seal of approval I set off for Taupo via the Desert Road. What a change from the last couple of days. The sun was out to complete the journey. I had to stop in Taihape for a coffee break as the day was hot and no air conditioning in this old girl. The entire trip was a breeze for the coupe and three stages of 300 kilometres were plenty for me. I was pleased to arrive home with no problems with ‘Reliks’, in time for my 70th birthday. Taupo VCC Club Out and About Two of our Club Members attended the annual Model T Tin Lizzie Rally this year based at the beautifully refurbished Tuakau Hotel. Our Saturday Rally run lunch stop ended up at the Clovercrest Miniature Donkey Stud. (not everybodys cup of tea) They breed the American Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys that hail from Sardinia. Selling their baby Donkeys up to $5000.00 each. A great weekend, Bruce and Trish giving their Model A Roadster an outing after a major rebuild. Great to see the hard work and long hours spent getting back it on the road has paid off, purring along like a dream. Bruce and Trish, itâ€™s now time to get out and enjoy it while the sun is shining.

Ladies’ Night Our Clubrooms looked like a busy colourful Evening Market. The evening was most informative, featuring six women with such interesting and vibrant stalls. While we mixed and mingled with nibbles and drinks, we listened to a presentation from each of them. It was most enlightening hearing about what lead to their commitment, the preparation and time required, the highlights and difficulties encountered, with some opportunities to add some of their special ‘hobby’ stories. Our members’ displays, talks, and demonstrations clearly reflected their extensive creativity, hard work, huge time (and cost) commitments and lots of patience. Similar qualities to our owners of Vintage and Classic Cars!

Introduced in 1941, the Town & Country used wagonlike wood framing and panels for the body sides under a sedan’s steel roof. Instead of a flat-lifting window and dropping tailgate, the roof ’s slope carried through a fixed window and a pair of center-opening wood doors below. It was moderately restyled for 1942, and the Town & Country returned after World War II purely as a status symbol. A four-door sedan and a convertible replaced the wagon, keeping its wood panels and adding a wood decklid. Most sedans rode on six-cylinder Windsor chassis, and the convertibles used those of eight-cylinder New Yorkers. Chrysler claimed it was “a new concept in car design to link your worlds of work and play.” The labor required to build and maintain what was advertised as “The Beautiful Chrysler” doomed the Town & Country. In 1949, when the redesigned Chryslers appeared, the Town & Country was down to a convertible. The wood-trimmed series ended with a two-door hardtop in 1950.

Rally Regulations 1

One entrant in the vehicle must be a current financial member of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) or a member of a recognised vintage motoring club. The entrant must be the driver, rider, navigator or passenger of the entered vehicle. All invited guests are deemed non competitive.

The rally is open to vehicles defined in the rules of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc).

All entered vehicles must possess a current VIC and display a current VIC sticker.

Actions that may bring the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) into disrepute will incur disqualification.

The use of electronic navigational devices or calculators of any type are not permitted in or on vehicles entered in the competitive event.

Late entries and/or entrants changing vehicles after 7 February 2020 will be deemed non competitive.

All drivers and navigators must attend the safety briefing prior to the commencement of events on Saturday, 11 April 2020.

The decision of the Rally Convenor, in consultation with the North Island Club Captain, will be final.

$25 Local Registration. Eligible for all prizes. To All Members, Rotoura branch of the VCC are holding their 8th Annual Car Show at Rotoura Lakefront Domain on Sunday, 19th January 2020. It is very informal, anyone can display, and there is a gold coin request from drivers which will be donated to St Johns Ambulance. In 2019, Rotorua VCC raised $1500.00 for St Johns with donations from drivers and the public with over 330 cars on display. Taupo VCC are always part of this event and it’s great to catch up with fellow VCC Club Members. Meet at the Clubrooms 9.00am and leave 9.15am for Rotoura Display cars from 10.00 am to 2.00pm. Take picnic lunch or enjoy one of the Cafes in “Eat Street” The Soundshell markets and other Holiday market activities will also be adjacent to the Car Show.

Rotorua Vintage & Veteran Car Club Inc proudly present the

8th Annual Rotorua Lakefront Car Show 10am - 2pm, Sunday, 19th January 2020 ALL CARS, BIKES AND COMMERCIALS WELCOME! The venue is the Rotorua Village Green at the Lake Front, off Whakaue Street. This is an informal car show open to any individuals or clubs to display their vehicles. Drivers will be asked for a gold coin donation upon arrival. All monies raised will be donated to St Johns Ambulance Rotorua. Car clubs are welcome to display their vehicles in a group. During the day drivers and their companions can enjoy their own picnic lunch under the trees, or take advantage of local eateries, including Rotorua’s “Eat Street” which is at the southern end of the show area. Rotorua’s Soundshell Market will be in operation adjacent to the Car Show, as well as other holiday attractions.

Over 330 vehicles were on display at last year’s show, and the event has been very popular with locals and holiday makers alike. Vehicles have ranged from early vintage to almost new. Rally Outline Friday, 10 April Rally Headquarters for the weekend will be our own clubrooms, situated at 14 Tiro Tiro Road, Levin. They will be open from 4 pm onwards, for participants to uplift their rally packs. This rally will be proudly centred around our purpose built rooms and adjacent show grounds. A full and detailed rally programme will be supplied in your newsletter and rally pack. At approximately 6 pm all participants are invited to a barbeque meal that will be held at the clubrooms. Please BYO drinks. This will be an ideal opportunity to meet fellow members and participants.

Saturday, 11 April At 9 30 am all vehicles are to assemble in front of the clubrooms for the day’s scenic rally. This will take you through the heart of the Horowhenua on flat, quiet rural roads. A driver and participants’ safety briefing will be held. All drivers and navigators must attend. At 10 am the first car will be away. The competitive participants will be supplied additional information regarding their competition prior. An optional lunch will be supplied at a local rural school. At the conclusion of the day’s activities, dinner is to be held at world-class Southwards Museum and Theatre Auditorium, situated in Paraparaumu. BYO drinks. Transport is available by bus if not wishing to drive to and from the venue and will return you to the clubrooms. Security will be maintained on all vehicles. Visit the museum at your leisure prior to dinner. The Wurlitzer organ will entertain before dinner. Period dress is encouraged.

Sunday, 12 April At 10 am assemble at the clubrooms with a publicised drive through tour of the Levin central area to follow. Return to the clubrooms for lunch. The afternoon will consist of a gymkhana for entrants and an entertaining display from several Ford Model T Race-abouts. The public will be invited to attend. In the evening, dinner and prize giving will be held at the Levin RSA. There is an open bar with no BYO permitted. Period dress is encouraged.

Monday, 13 April Morning tea will be provided at the clubrooms. Enjoy the company of members prior to leaving on your journey home. Our extensive parts shed and library will be open. Both have many items available to purchase. Depart at you leisure. A full detailed programme will be supplied in a newsletter and later in your rally pack.
