Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – October 2019 In late August the National Daffodil Rally for Cancer was held and we raised around $650.00 for local Taupo based cancer services. This was a good increase on last year and we had a better turnout from the public probably due to some better local media support. Getting the local media behind this event is always a challenge as this run is now a fixed event on our calendar and replaces the Chairman’s Run. Most that came along completed the drive down the lake to the Cadillac Café and other local cafes where we had afternoon tea and were entertained by the owners with some good old rock & roll. Hopefully, we can make it even bigger next year. During September we had Greg Terrill (accompanied by his wife Gaynor) who is the festival director for the VCC Festival of Motoring to be held in New Plymouth in January 2021 speak to us about how the Festival of Motoring will be run. There are a lot of changes and more innovation as to choices on how we can participate. Much of the rally will be optional participation where you can choose what and when you want to get involved with a run. With New Plymouth ‘just down the road’ our branch will never have a better opportunity to attend a national rally of this type and we are committed to getting as many of our members to attend this potentially great event. Our committee member Trish Jefferies has already made a group booking at one of New Plymouth’s best motels so if you would like to make a provisional booking please get in touch with OCTOBER 2019

Trish. This major event is about 18 months away so there is plenty of time to plan to attend. The rally entry fee is yet to be advised and once it is we shall let everyone know. We held our annual ‘Brunch Run’ during the month and around 25 came along for a quick drive around town and questions to get the brain engaged then back to the clubrooms for a great breakfast served by our committee members. Chris Smith surprised us with his version of porridge having it served with cream & brown sugar and a hearty ‘tot’ of Drambuie. This must be the best porridge ever! On a national level, the VCC has sent out an intention to review our current ‘wings’ logo with something newer and fresher although the sample as presented to date seemed to us a giant step backwards. We shall put an example of their logo design starting point up on the club notice board so you can have look and make your own mind up. We have as a club formally communicated our thoughts back to VCC on the design suggesting that if VCC wants to attract younger people this design probably won’t be successful. Finally on Tuesday, October 1st at 5.30 PM we are holding our first Taupo Rally committee meeting. Everything is already well underway and the route is being plotted by some very experience rally planners. If you would like to help plan and run the rally for next March 2020 please come along and make a contribution. Neil Chave

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – October 2019 Another great month for our Club, Neil looking after the very successful Cancer Society Daffodil Rally down to Turangi and back. Club Night guest speaker Greg Terrill updating Club Members on the up and coming International Festival of Historic Motoring at New Plymouth 2021. Chris Smith MP, (master of porridge) put up a delicious pot of porridge with extra special toppings, making our yearly Breakfast/Brunch Run another success. Numbers may have been down, but we all enjoyed our meal prepared by our Club Member Cooks. Thanks to the Cooks and the cleanup team.

Looking forward to the October Club Event’s • Club Night Wednesday the 9th, is still in the planning stages. 2 guest speaker’s we approached have work commitments and unable to help this time. • Do you know anybody that would fill in as a Guest Speaker? • Club Day Sunday 20th. • Fun Day Sunday. See notice on page 17, Our ladies are putting together the Ladies Night set for Wednesday night 13th November. They tell me they are still in the planning stage. Check some preliminary notice of what you are in for. We are also planning something for the menfolk and meeting back at the Clubrooms for a meal together. Please read what I and Rod Corbett (Targa VCC Stewart) have said about the upcoming Targa VCC Time Trials. Club cars are required for a display at the Great Lakes Centre on Monday. See notice on page 36. Don’t forget to put Saturday night on the 7th of December into your diary for our “Christmas at the Club” Christmas Dinner. More details in the next newsletter. On Saturday the 14th of September something special happened at our Taupo VCC Clubrooms, Mr. Graham Mock (Patron of our Club and Life Member) and wife June celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends at our Clubrooms. Graham and June asked the Club committee whether they would be prepared to do the catering for this special event as a fundraiser for the Club. A number of Club members volunteered to get involved, not only as a fundraising event but also to honour Graham and June’s long association with the Club. It involved a lot of hard work but was also a lot of fun and the added bonus was the considerable amount of money raised. The amount was boosted by generous donations of time and items donated or discounted. A big thank you to all involved, especially Lorraine Chave and Maureen Ransley who coordinated the whole event. Congratulations to Graham and June on 60 years of married life together.

Targa Time Trials Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd November 2019 - Briefly for any VCC Members unfamiliar with the Targa VCC Time Trials, it is not a race, but rather an exercise in precise driving, to maintain a set average speed through all closed stages, (similar to a regularity trial, but with the safety of knowing that all participants have staggered stage start times, drive the same direction, on the same road, with nothing coming towards them).

So what’s happening in Taupo? Sunday the 27th of October the VCC Time Trial cars will be meeting at our Clubrooms, Sunday afternoon. Two of our Club Members will be helping out with Scrutineering of the VCC Time Trail cars. Pop down and say hi from 2-5pm.

Monday the 28th of October (Labour Day) - Targa Competition, VCC Time Trial & Touring Cars Display from approximately 12 pm (midday) to 2.30 pm with Ceremonial Start at 1.30 pm. This is where Taupo VCC can be involved. Peter Martin, MD URG/Targa is keen for VCC Taupo to be involved, subject to confirmation from Taupo Council that all necessary route is available. Presumably all OK, if Taupo VCC members cars were lined up by 1.00 pm on Monday 28th October. The Ceremonial Start would happen from 1.30 pm, (Great Lakes Centre) with Targa Competition cars being flagged away from the “Start Line” to drive through an assembled line up of Taupo VCC branch members cars. Should be a great starting spectacle, and great photo opportunity for Targa and VCC supporters, along with local media. We always get great public support for such events, so it’s also a great way for Taupo VCC to engage with local car enthusiasts and hopefully encourage them and younger families to join VCC. So Members, we need a plan. Meet at the Clubrooms say by 12 noon and head down to Great Lakes Centre and park where directed. Tuesday 29th of October - Targa Competition cars depart Great Lakes Centre for Otorohonga from 8.00am, followed by VCC Time Trial cars from 9.00am and Targa Tour Cars from 9.15am. Please note our Taupo VCC branch Members are also very welcome to attend this start event. Unfortunately, I will be away, so I will have to hand this one over to Neil and committee members to get as many Club Cars as possible to attend. Eric will email all members also closer to the day. Please think about coming on down and displaying your car. Please also see extra information on Targa Week in this newsletter on page 36. Taupo VCC Club Captains Weekend Away Saturday/Sunday 16th/17th November 2019 Saturday 16th, Meet at the Clubrooms for a 8.00am start for the slower cars. Faster cars can go at say 8.30am. Travel to Cambridge and meet up at Ross Bros, Muscle Car Garage. $5.00 per person entry fee by donation box, so please have cash for this. Arrive between 10.00am to10.30am “This is everyones dream shed” After garage vist we head onto Hamilton Gardens where we can enjoy a cafe lunch or pack yourself a picnic lunch. The Mansfield Garden is the one to look out for, a Model T build to withstand “joe” public climbing up and over it. Waikato VCC provided the manpower to construct it. You may just wish to make this trip a day vist and travel back home, late afternoon. If you wish to stay over, accommodation for Saturday night is your responsibility, back to Cambridge or if you wish to stay in Hamilton, check out Classic Car Museum and cafe Sunday morning. Those wishing to stay in Cambridge can attend the Waikato VCC Swap Meet on Sunday. Until we know numbers it’s hard to plan what everyone wants to do. From the enthusiastic response to our request and the subsequent attention to detail, it was greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Lorraine and Maureen who spearheaded the operation and ensured its success.

The variety, quality, and quantity of the food was terrific as were the decorations of the clubrooms, all of which greatly exceeded our expectations. Interview: Don Packwood, Artist Sir Stirling Moss made the point that he wasn’t a natural driver, in his opinion, having to work very hard to be fast. On the other hand, he believed drivers like Nuvolari, Fangio, and Senna were naturals. What set these individuals apart was that they possessed a gift, an instinct for driving very fast. This is also true for artists in their painting. I think most people with training would achieve some skill in drawing, but I agree with Moss, there are naturally gifted artists, instinctively able to achieve results that some would spend a lifetime trying.

Q: How did you first get into painting? My parents provided me with my first oil paints, brushes, canvas, etc on my eighth birthday and I’ve been painting off and on for 50 plus years, being much more serious in the last 15 or so. I can even remember my first painting – entitled The Lonely Tree. On completion, I noticed that the tree had depth, visually 3D, but I didn’t understand why. I soon realised that the balance, proportion, perspective, and lighting are all OCTOBER 2019

equally of importance and give the final illusion of depth and volume to the composition.

Painting one of these wonderful machines as an image on canvas with its compound curves and, of course, the materials – paintwork, glass, chrome, nickel, brass, wood, fabric, and leather, each of which requires different techniques to portray – it is so very satisfying to achieve a likeness.

Q: Any particular type of car or period you enjoy most? A: A period I really enjoy painting scenes from is the early years of motoring, domestic or sporting. At that time, motor racing, in particular, was so dramatically dangerous. Hurtling along on tree-lined public roads, full of pot-holes, gravel-strewn, lined with very enthusiastic carefree spectators with little regard for safety. It all made for adrenaline-pumping, death-defying action. The late Chris Amon signs a few of Don’s paintings, including a painting of his winning Ford GT40 Mk2.

The 1969 Canadian-American Challenge Cup was the fourth season of the CanAm auto racing series. It consisted of FIA Group 7 racing cars running two-hour sprint events. It began June 1, 1969, and ended November 9, 1969, after eleven rounds. This was the first season of Can-Am following the demise of the similar United States Road Racing Championship. With several USRRC events choosing to continue on under Can-Am, the series schedule was greatly expanded beyond its normal six event season. This also meant that the season was run over a greater period of time, rather than just being run in the autumn. The season was swept by McLaren, whose founder Bruce McLaren won the championship over teammate and fellow New Zealander Denny Hulme. McLaren won six races to Hulme’s five, winning the championship by a mere five points.

Bentley Drivers Club of the UK will be traveling through NZ and their cars will be on display at the Taupo Museum on the 14th of October, 2019, from 12.30pm untill 2.30 pm.

Rally Outline Friday, 10 April Rally Headquarters for the weekend will be our own clubrooms, situated at 14 Tiro Tiro Road, Levin. They will be open from 4 pm onwards, for participants to uplift their rally packs. This rally will be proudly centred around our purpose built rooms and adjacent show grounds. A full and detailed rally programme will be supplied in your newsletter and rally pack. At approximately 6 pm all participants are invited to a barbeque meal that will be held at the clubrooms. Please BYO drinks. This will be an ideal opportunity to meet fellow members and participants.

Saturday, 11 April At 9 30 am all vehicles are to assemble in front of the clubrooms for the day’s scenic rally. This will take you through the heart of the Horowhenua on flat, quiet rural roads. A driver and participants’ safety briefing will be held. All drivers and navigators must attend. At 10 am the first car will be away. The competitive participants will be supplied additional information regarding their competition prior. An optional lunch will be supplied at a local rural school. At the conclusion of the day’s activities, dinner is to be held at world-class Southwards Museum and Theatre Auditorium, situated in Paraparaumu. BYO drinks. Transport is available by bus if not wishing to drive to and from the venue and will return you to the clubrooms. Security will be maintained on all vehicles. Visit the museum at your leisure prior to dinner. The Wurlitzer organ will entertain before dinner. Period dress is encouraged.

Sunday, 12 April At 10 am assemble at the clubrooms with a publicised drive through tour of the Levin central area to follow. Return to the clubrooms for lunch. The afternoon will consist of a gymkhana for entrants and an entertaining display from several Ford Model T Race-abouts. The public will be invited to attend. In the evening, dinner and prize giving will be held at the Levin RSA. There is an open bar with no BYO permitted. Period dress is encouraged.

Monday, 13 April Morning tea will be provided at the clubrooms. Enjoy the company of members prior to leaving on your journey home. Our extensive parts shed and library will be open. Both have many items available to purchase. Depart at you leisure. A full detailed programme will be supplied in a newsletter and later in your rally pack.

Trophies Todd Park Restoration Trophy Presented to a vehicle entered in the rally for overall concours condition. This will be voted on by the attending public.

Wairarapa Trophy Presented to the best overall competitor.

Maxwell Trophy Awarded to the branch entering the winning team on the following basis: - One team per branch. - Team to consist of three vehicles, each being of a different class. One must be either Veteran or Vintage or both can be included. - Team members must all enter the competitive section on Saturday. - Teams and members names are to be advised in writing to Rally Headquarters before 8 pm, Friday, 10 April.

One entrant in the vehicle must be a current financial member of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) or a member of a recognised vintage motoring club. The entrant must be the driver, rider, navigator or passenger of the entered vehicle. All invited guests are deemed non competitive.

The rally is open to vehicles defined in the rules of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc).

All entered vehicles must possess a current VIC and display a current VIC sticker.

Actions that may bring the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) into disrepute will incur disqualification.

The use of electronic navigational devices or calculators of any type are not permitted in or on vehicles entered in the competitive event.

Late entries and/or entrants changing vehicles after 7 February 2020 will be deemed non competitive.

All drivers and navigators must attend the safety briefing prior to the commencement of events on Saturday, 11 April 2020.

The decision of the Rally Convenor, in consultation with the North Island Club Captain, will be final.

Cook Sestercentennial Rally, Gisborne, Labour Weekend 2019 Cook Sestercentennial Rally is to be held in Gisborne at Labour Weekend (October 25-28) commemorating 250 years since Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand in October 1769. This run will be the basis of the Hawke’s Bay Branch Annual Safari who will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from Napier organised by the Hawke’s Bay branch, and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Gisborne branch will organise the Saturday and Sunday runs. All inquiries should be directed to the Hawke’s Bay branch. “KANGEROO CHASERS” The design of the ute was a result of a 1932 letter from an unnamed Victorian farmer’s wife asking for “a vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondays”. In response, Lewis Bandt developed the ute and the model called a “coupe utility” at the time was released in 1934. When the Australian version was displayed in the US, Henry Ford nicknamed it the “Kangaroo Chaser”. A convertible version, known as the roadster utility was produced in limited numbers by Ford in the 1930s
