Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – September 2019 Chairman’s Report September Our highlight in August was the annual Quiz Night with fish & chips. Again a great turnout of members to this popular annual event. Thanks to Chris Smith for setting some great questions that proved a great challenge to many with just a few points of disagreement on some of the answers. August too is the month where nationally most branches of the VCC run various events in support of their local Cancer Society group and Daffodil Day. By the time you receive this September newsletter, it will, of course, be all over but we are running a Daffodil Rally for Cancer run on Sunday 25th. We try to mobilise the local Taupo population to come along and support this run and work with the local press & radio media to promote it as well as we can. Hopefully this year we get a good turnout and a reasonably fine day for the run to Turangi. The club too is again arranging the deliveries of fresh daffodil bunches to local businesses as our further support for our local cancer services. August is also the month the national body of the VCC is having their AGM. This year it’s being held in Greymouth and once all of the various reports are circulated the highlights from these will be reported back to all members. Much of SEPTEMBER 2019

the key information has already been sent out and full members of the VCC will have already received their financial reports and voting papers. In September we shall be holding our first meeting to get the 2020 Taupo Rally up and running. We are always looking for people to come along to these meetings and join the rally committee as we welcome new input on how we can strive to hold an ‘even better’ rally next March. If you would like to make a contribution the inaugural meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 30th at 5.30PM at the clubrooms. Coming up too in September is a club night where Greg Terrill from the national VCC will be with us on Wednesday 11th September to speak about the forthcoming Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in New Plymouth on January 2021. This rally will be very different from those held previously and as it is to be held in New Plymouth represents an excellent opportunity for Taupo branch members to attend so please come along and hear what Greg has to say. There are already bookings being made by Trish Jefferies for accommodation at the rally in New Plymouth so if you are keen to attend let Trish know and make your booking. Neil

Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – September 2019 What wonderful weather we are having lately, “yeah right” when are we going to get some nice fine settled weather. I am sure that you are all itching to get out into the garden to get those plants ready for the spring. I have managed to get in some extra fruit trees, so looking forward to a bumper crop someday. It’s nice to see a group of Club Members turning up regularly at the Coffee Club on Lake Terrace on the first Sunday of each month. Thank you to Owen who takes charge of this very informal get together over Coffee and Breakfast, between 9.00am to 10 am. Remember its open to all Club Members on the first Sunday of each month, for a catchup. Please let Owen know if you would like to come, so he can inform Coffee Club re numbers before Sunday. Next Coffee Club Breakfast is on Sunday the 1st of September. If fine we can park our cars on the grass. The committee couldn’t have asked for a better turn out than we had at our annual Fish and Chip/ Quiz Night. Approximately 50 members munched through 42 packets of F&C, followed by 50 plus icecreams. Thanks to our committee members who went through their ringing list and got the numbers. As always this is a great fun evening for all to enjoy and congratulations to the winners of the Quiz. Hope you enjoyed your chocolate fish.

If you’re thinking of going to New Plymouth, it’s a must you come and hear Greg’s presentation. See notice on page 39. Sunday the 15th of September is our annual and popular Breakfast Club Run followed by Brunch/Breakfast at approximately 10 am. We need several cooks in the Club Kitchen to prepare Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns, Baked Beans etc. Are you up to it? If so give me or a committee member a call. See notice on page 12. Targa 2019 VCC Time Trial’s are coming to Taupo VCC on Sunday afternoon the 27th of October. Two of our Club members will be helping with scrutineering. Pop down and say hi!!. Sunday afternoon will be from 2.00 pm at our Taupo VCC Clubrooms and Monday morning the 28th of October will be from 9.00am at the Great Lake Centre. Planning is underway for the Taupo VCC members for a weekend (16th/ 17th November)away to Hamilton, visiting Ross Brothers trucks and cars in Cambridge, Hamilton Gardens. Sunday, Classic Car Museum and Waikato VCC swap at Lake Karapiro. See notice on page 16. As we all know we have had some very successful dinners/meals at our Clubrooms, getting a good turnout of members. We have about 40 when we go out for Christmas Dinner, but lately, in Clubroom dinners, we have had 50 plus!!. After much discussion on costs and suitable venues for our Annual Christmas Dinner, the committee has decided that we should hold it at our Clubrooms this year. We will be looking for ideas of how we could put on this Dinner. To get away from the same Club members pitching in to help in the kitchen cleanup and dishes, we are looking at possibly employing a small group of people to do this for us. Do you know of any small groups that may be interested? Let us know. Suggestions at this stage have Club Members provide salad and desserts, Club provides Meat Dishes. An Interview with New Committee Member: Murray Stanley Q: What made you decide to get a VCC eligible car. A: I didn’t buy my car with the express

We kick off this month with what we hope to be a new regular series of interviews with some of our club members. Hopefully, more to come...

intention of getting a VCC eligible car. In fact, I did not really have any affinity for Jaguars until I had an opportunity in Australia in 2016 to drive my friend’s Series III XJ6. I was really taken by how nice it looked and how beautiful it was to drive. So on my return to NZ, had a look on TradeMe and saw that there were several listed but my eyes popped when one was a V12. The concept of a V12 engine really appealed to me evoking memories of old Packards, Lincolns and of course the best of all – the Rolls Royce Merlin! Once I drove the V12, I was hooked and just had to buy it. I loved the long, low look of the car, its colour which is a kind of red (called Cranberry) and how smooth that big engine was. I have previously had a Mazda RX8 which had a turbine-like feel to its rotary engine and the Jaguar V12 engine has a similar smooth feel.

Q: Was your car restored or did you restore it?

Q: How many VCC eligible cars have you owned.

A: Our car was in original condition

A: I havenâ€™t owned any VCC eligible

(although the paint was a little tired) when we got it. I have however spent more money than I care to remember (or tell my wife about) sprucing it up. The first VCC run that I took the car on was the 2017 Daffodil Run and unfortunately, when I stopped on the way home, someone in an SUV backed into the front of the Jag damaging a couple of panels. Rather than be discouraged, I took this to be a sign from the classic car gods to do a full repaint on the car and now it looks great.

Q: What is your Favourite VCC memory? A: We havenâ€™t been in the club very long but we are very keen to do as many events as we can. Earlier this year we did the Country Roads Rally and it was a big thrill to win the award for 1st place in the Post 1980 category. When we do rallies that involve navigation, my wife Barbara drives and I navigate. We find this the best recipe to maintain a happy marriage!

Q: Where would you want to travel in your VCC car. A: I would quite like to do a long tour in the car – possibly the next North Island Club Captain’s Tour.

Q: What would be your dream vintage car? A: My dream vintage car would be some kind of old Alfa Romeo. They say that everyone should own at least one Alfa in their lifetime and I haven’t as yet. If I had to choose just one, my dream car it would probably be an Alfa 8C from the 1930s but I suspect that even if I won Lotto, that would not be enough to buy one of those. So as a second, and more realistic choice, it would be an Alfa GTV6 from the 1980s.

Q: What advice would you give someone if they were buying their first VCC car. A: I would like to say to anyone buying their first VCC car is don’t get anything too complicated. However, it’s probably best not to take any advice from me because the Jaguar V12 engine is possibly one of the most complicated examples of British engineering ever.

Q: What’s the best thing about being a member of the Vintage Car Club. A: The best thing about being in the Vintage Car Club – or maybe just the Taupo Branch – is how friendly and inclusive it is. We have been in several car clubs but the Taupo VCC is by far the most active and inclusive. And I really like the way that most people wear their name badges making it easy for newbies to know who is who.

Q: Add a little bit about yourself. A: We’ve always been a sports car family. When I first met my wife Barbara in the early 1970’s I was driving a 1954 MG TF – which she says was the main attraction. I subsequently restored that car from the ground up – and then promptly sold it for the huge amount of $1,600! And then after we were married we had an MG A which much to Barbara’s distress was sold upon the arrival of our first child and replaced with a Ford Cortina. But I promised Barbara that we would eventually get back into a sports car once the children grew up. She was hoping for an MG B but once Mazda MX5s arrived on the scene in NZ we got one of those instead in 1995 - and have had one ever since. SEPTEMBER 2019

Perhaps not what the average person on the street would class as a vintage car, after all, “A vintage car is like, from the 1930s aren’t they?” As we know, to be classed ‘Vintage’, a car just needs to be 30 years or older. The BMW 635 CSi easily meets the requirement. The BMW 635 CSi was the first of the BMW M6 model line and is the third BMW M-badged car. In 1985, the 635CSi replaced the 633CSi for the North American Market. This model used the M30B34 engine, which in 1988, was upgraded to the M30B35. This upgraded engine resulted in catalytic converter equipped United States models offering similar performance to European models. Self-leveling rear suspension was added to the 635CSi and M6 features list

Rally Outline Friday, 10 April Rally Headquarters for the weekend will be our own clubrooms, situated at 14 Tiro Tiro Road, Levin. They will be open from 4 pm onwards, for participants to uplift their rally packs. This rally will be proudly centred around our purpose built rooms and adjacent show grounds. A full and detailed rally programme will be supplied in your newsletter and rally pack. At approximately 6 pm all participants are invited to a barbeque meal that will be held at the clubrooms. Please BYO drinks. This will be an ideal opportunity to meet fellow members and participants.

Saturday, 11 April At 9 30 am all vehicles are to assemble in front of the clubrooms for the day’s scenic rally. This will take you through the heart of the Horowhenua on flat, quiet rural roads. A driver and participants’ safety briefing will be held. All drivers and navigators must attend. At 10 am the first car will be away. The competitive participants will be supplied additional information regarding their competition prior. An optional lunch will be supplied at a local rural school. At the conclusion of the day’s activities, dinner is to be held at world-class Southwards Museum and Theatre Auditorium, situated in Paraparaumu. BYO drinks. Transport is available by bus if not wishing to drive to and from the venue and will return you to the clubrooms. Security will be maintained on all vehicles. Visit the museum at your leisure prior to dinner. The Wurlitzer organ will entertain before dinner. Period dress is encouraged.

Sunday, 12 April At 10 am assemble at the clubrooms with a publicised drive through tour of the Levin central area to follow. Return to the clubrooms for lunch. The afternoon will consist of a gymkhana for entrants and an entertaining display from several Ford Model T Race-abouts. The public will be invited to attend. In the evening, dinner and prize giving will be held at the Levin RSA. There is an open bar with no BYO permitted. Period dress is encouraged.

Monday, 13 April Morning tea will be provided at the clubrooms. Enjoy the company of members prior to leaving on your journey home. Our extensive parts shed and library will be open. Both have many items available to purchase. Depart at you leisure. A full detailed programme will be supplied in a newsletter and later in your rally pack.

Rally Regulations 1

One entrant in the vehicle must be a current financial member of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) or a member of a recognised vintage motoring club. The entrant must be the driver, rider, navigator or passenger of the entered vehicle. All invited guests are deemed non competitive.

The rally is open to vehicles defined in the rules of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc).

All entered vehicles must possess a current VIC and display a current VIC sticker.

Actions that may bring the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) into disrepute will incur disqualification.

The use of electronic navigational devices or calculators of any type are not permitted in or on vehicles entered in the competitive event.

Late entries and/or entrants changing vehicles after 7 February 2020 will be deemed non competitive.

All drivers and navigators must attend the safety briefing prior to the commencement of events on Saturday, 11 April 2020.

The decision of the Rally Convenor, in consultation with the North Island Club Captain, will be final.

“2020 Rally Meeting” We are about to start planning for the March 2020 rally. If you would like to join the committee a meeting is planned for – Monday 30th September, at the club rooms at 5.30PM. All welcome – we need your support.

In the past, war ships carried iron cannons, which required cannon balls nearby. The cannon balls were stored in a square pyramid formation, with one ball on top, resting on four; resting on nine, resting on sixteen. In order to prevent the sixteen balls from rolling away, a metal plate called a monkey, with sixteen round indentations was secured near the cannon. As iron rusts quickly, and the cannon balls were always in a damp situation, to save iron erosion of the plates; they made the monkeys of brass. Whilst the rusting problem may have been solved, brass contracts much more and quicker than iron in very cold weather. As a consequence, when the temperature was extremely cold (freezing) the brass indentations would shrink and the cannon balls would roll off the monkey. The temperature was then deemed “cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!” So get your minds off those very well endowed male furry animals!

The Journey through Time is an informal rally of about 100 kilometres through the roads of the King Country. This year the theme will be our “25th Anniversary Rally “. The roads this year are a combination of a bit of tar seal but mostly country metal roads. Full petrol tanks are recommended.

Cook Sestercentennial Rally, Gisborne, Labour Weekend 2019 Cook Sestercentennial Rally is to be held in Gisborne at Labour Weekend (October 25-28) commemorating 250 years since Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand in October 1769. This run will be the basis of the Hawke’s Bay Branch Annual Safari who will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from Napier organised by the Hawke’s Bay branch, and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Gisborne branch will organise the Saturday and Sunday runs. All inquiries should be directed to the Hawke’s Bay branch. Targa 2019 Time Trial When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central & Lower/Mid North Island Refer www.targa.nz 2019 Events – Draft Event Programme. What & Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in precise driving to maintain a set average speed through all closed tarmac stages, (similar to a regularity trial, but with the safety of knowing that all participants have staggered start times, drive in the same direction, on the same road, with nothing coming towards them!) It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC & hopefully attract some new & younger members. Eligible Cars: All types of cars with a current WOF & minimum third-party insurance may enter, but there is a special discount available for VCC eligible cars (30+ years old) with a VIC.
