Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – August 2019 In July the club again maintained a presence at the annual Hobbies Expo with a great line up this year of trucks. The Hobbies Expo was another excellent opportunity to showcase the club to the local population. And with the superb truck display, the diversity of member’s vehicles hopefully brings a greater awareness of what the Taupo VCC has to offer. This month is August, and already many will be wondering where so much of the year has gone. And August is now one of our busiest months with the ‘Fish & Chip Quiz night’ on Wednesday, August 14th. The quiz Master again this year will be Chris Smith. Chris has set another challenging wide-ranging list of questions, and these will be all general knowledge-based. Hopefully, Chris will be back in time for this club event as he is soon to be off to the Arctic Circle to view the Northern Lights and chase reindeer. As this is also our fish & chip night, we shall be phoning all members to check if you are attending and finalising your order. Another major activity in August is the Daffodil Day run planned for Sunday, August 25th. We shall AUGUST 2019

meet at the clubrooms at 1.15PM to head off towards Turangi at 1.30PM for an afternoon tea at a local café that is themed as a classic car venue. You don’t have to travel all the way to Turangi; you can head off home at any time on this run if you wish to. We need ALL members to support this annual event as it is now the national VCC day. As it is a fundraiser for Daffodil Day, there will be $10.00 per car collected, and all of this will go directly to the local Taupo based Cancer Society. We need all members to motivate all of their families’ friends and neighbours to come along on the day and support this vital worthy cause. The club too will be delivering the fresh daffodils to local businesses in Taupo on Monday, August 26th. We don’t know how many deliveries are needed at this stage, but they are all just around Taupo. If you have time for a couple of hours on the morning of Monday 25th, then let us know. Neil

Club Captain’s Report
Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – August 2019 School Holiday over, grandkids back home and off to school. Grandson’s first day at starting school after the holidays. We love having them, but always glad to see them off. Now we can recover for the next holidays. There has been a change to our program, re the Daffodil Run and Chairman Run. Neil and I have decided that we should combine these two runs, instead of having two runs one week apart. Please support the Daffodil Run on Sunday the 25th of August, leaving the Clubrooms at 1.30pm. We will be heading down to Turangi and meeting up at the Cadillac Cafe, Turangi Town Centre. You may wish to stay and have a coffee or pack your own picnic. Please support the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. $ 10.00 per car. You are welcome to bring along family and friends. July Club night guest speaker Marin Leusink gave us an insight into the upcoming Volcanic Rumble to be held in Taupo during the weekend of the 13th,14th, and 15th of December.

Should be interesting to see anything and everything that “Rumble’s.” Note this will be the same weekend as the Taupo Christmas Parade and Marin assures us that we will all be working together to make this happen. Note your calendar, Christmas Parade on 14th of December. The evening finished off showing highlights of the last Beach Hop 2019. Marty’s Guest Speaker Conrad Clark, Formula Ford driver, was racing in China so unable to make it this time. Maybe another time. Hobbies Expo: What a fantastic turnout of Club Members (21) that helped out over the weekend. Many thanks, Team Taupo. Also special thanks to Bruce W, Bruce J, Danny and Owen for allowing us to use their “Trucks” to be part of our display. Four very special vehicles including the “farm truck” that some wanted to buy. Probably after Bruce J decided to treat it with some polish to the bonnet. Old Blue is a well-loved and used truck, whether on the farm, going to town to do business or competitive rallies around the country. It gets well used.
Looking Forward Wednesday the 14th of August, 5.30pm our F&C Quiz night kicks off. Our Quiz Masters are ready to go, F&C will be served from 6.00pm. Committee members will make contact with Club members, so please say “yes” for an enjoyable night Quizzing. Who knows you may go home with a chocolate fish. See calendar on page 2. Chairman’s and Daffodil have combined this year. Sunday the 25th of August. Meet at Clubrooms for 1.30pm start. See notice in this mag (page 12). Riley Brakes – The continuing story There is an old saying, “If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!”

Continued from the article ‘Gentle Annie - Or Not So Gentle?’ that appeared in the June 2019 issue of Taupo Torque.
Well, certain parts of the Riley brakes did need fixing. The right rear oil seal had popped, and that left oil over the brake shoes, so something had to be done there. Off with the drums, inspect the damage and then remove the offending axle so that the oil seal could be replaced. The large nut and tab washer were removed easily with the aid of one of Lester Strawbridge’s sockets – but the oil seal would not budge! A 50ton press soon made light work of that problem, and the assembly of the axle was straight forward as was fitting to the car. The rear brakes needed relining and radiusing, but the linings were too thick! A simple adjustment to the brake shoe fixed the problem. A new roller to replace the missing one had been machined and fitted – that meant the rear brakes would work even if the front hydraulic ones failed. The next phase was meant to be simple, either leave the front brakes as repaired alone or replace the cylinders and shoes. I decided to remove the front drums, AUGUST 2019

shoes, and wheel cylinders and replace them with series one Landrover parts that were identical and available new. The job was set out, and photos were taken of the original set up, all the parts in place just waiting for an inspection from the volunteer mechanics from the Vintage Car Club. The team of Noel Henderson and Bruce Jefferies arrived on an inspection visit to ensure that everything was in order, it seemed strange that at morning tea a union meeting was held to discuss the job. Four of us sat around in a semi-circle in the garage while the two union men went over the problems that could be encountered. Little did they know what lay ahead!
Day Two The team arrived full of the joys of spring and thought that they would be finished before lunchtime. Morning tea arrived, and an outside union meeting was held- in the sun of course, with peanut brownies and date loaf for sustenance, the nail box table was pressed into service again. Big discussions went on with the two “union bosses� being joined by the female organised-Jocelyn and the ordinary member-

Norman joining in. Things were serious as the team could not get the air out of the system. Several checks were made, a vacuum bleeder was tried- then a large one that worked off the air compressor- still no luck. The air bubbles would not stop, air was entering the system somewhere. It was decided by the union bosses to start with the lowest point on the right front wheel and to remove the pipe feeding that cylinder. The fitting was found to be loose in the wheel cylinder; perhaps the fault had been identified. Bruce took the offending pipe to the brake shop in town and found out that it should have had a single flare rather than the double that was there. Easy fix – a single flare was made in a few minutes.
Day Three The single flared pipe was fitted and the brake reservoir filled ready for bleeding- after several hours of attempting to bleed the brakes we had no luck, still air present in the system. Over lunch it was agreed to remove all pipes and check the flares – one new pipe was made and the other flare redone to a single. Everything was refitted, and at last, we got brake pedal pressure. There was still a little bit of air in the system, but we thought that with a road test that might be able to be removed quite easily. Wheels fitted, axle stands removed and off we went on a road test. The brakes worked fine, and the car pulled up straight and quickly- certainly up to WoF standard. The Riley was backed into the garage and the “union bosses” were pleased to have sorted out another complex problem that appeared to be straight forward earlier on. Tools were packed up, and just as the team were about to depart, Bruce noticed brake fluid dripping from the left top wheel cylinder! Off with the wheel, drums, shoes and then the offending cylinder. screw – with a mirror it was found that there was a score right across the seat of the bleed screw. Decision! Replace the offending part with the re-sleeved Dannevirke part.
Day Four You might have guessed – a union meeting to start the day, the new part was examined, reasons for the score were discussed, a drill was matched to the seat to see if the score could be removed, but that was not considered to be a good idea. So, the original Riley re-sleeved cylinder was fitted, and you guessed it- air was removed from the system, and the foot brake travel was restored to normal. The road test proved to be good, and the car was put away ready for a new WoF in coming days after I have had a cataract operation to restore my sight so that I can pass the eyesight test for my licence... hopefully. We enjoyed the “union meetings” Noel “Union Boss” and Bruce “Union Delegate” for their patience, skill and company, the yarns that were told, an experience of camaraderie and friendship that comes from belonging to the Vintage Car Club. Cook Sestercentennial Rally, Gisborne, Labour Weekend 2019 Cook Sestercentennial Rally is to be held in Gisborne at Labour Weekend (October 25-28) commemorating 250 years since Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand in October 1769. This run will be the basis of the Hawke’s Bay Branch Annual Safari who will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from Napier organised by the Hawke’s Bay branch, and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Gisborne branch will organise the Saturday and Sunday runs. All inquiries should be directed to the Hawke’s Bay branch. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in precise driving to maintain a set average speed through all closed tarmac stages, (similar to a regularity trial, but with the safety of knowing that all participants have staggered start times, drive in the same direction, on the same road, with nothing coming towards them!) It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC & hopefully attract some new & younger members. The Ford GT40 is a high-performance endurance racing car with the Mk I, Mk II, and Mk III model cars being based upon the British Lola Mk6, and were designed and built in England, while the GT40 Mk IV model was designed and built in the United States. The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times, from 1966 to 1969 (1966 being the Mk II, 1967 the Mk IV, and 1968–1969 the oldest chassis design, the Mk I), including a 1-2-3 finish in 1966. In 1966, with Henry Ford II personally in attendance at Le Mans, the Mk II GT40 provided Ford with the first overall Le Mans victory for an American manufacturer, and the first victory for an American manufacturer at a major European race since Jimmy Murphy’s triumph with Duesenberg at the 1921 French Grand Prix. Henry Ford II along with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon celebrates the first victory for an American manufacturer at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the podium in 1966.

Preliminary Notice
Club Night 7.30 pm 11th September 2019 Guest Speaker: Tony Haycock. Tony will be speaking on the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring Event which is being held at New Plymouth from the 17th to 22nd January 2021. This Club Night is a must for Members interested or intending to attend this Festival of Motoring. Come along and hear what Tony has to say and learn what it is all about. Any questions, Tony will be happy to answer, so this is the time to ask. You might like to know: Does my car need a VIC? How much is it going to cost to attend? Can I attend just part of the Event? Our Club coordinator for this Event is our Committee member Trish Jefferies. Trish is presently looking at accommodation options, as we thought that as a Club it would be nice if we all stayed at one place. If you would like to be included in this please register your name with Trish if you have not already done so. Sooner than later as accommodation is already starting to fill up. AUGUST 2019
