Chairman’s Report
Eric Foley Chairman’s Report for June 2022 Well, winter seems to have arrived, albeit a little later than I would have expected. The frosts in the last week and the rather lovely sight of snow on the mountains send us a clear signal that winter is upon us. We have passed the shortest day, but there is still a fair bit of our colder season to go. Our guest speaker on Club Night was Libby O’Brien, Council’s recently appointed Community Engagement and Development Manager. Libby is a local lady with a varied and interesting background. She and her support team are endeavouring to improve communication between council and the community. It was an interesting address by Libby and the resulting questions provided an amusing and thought-provoking range of views. Some of the questions and statements thrown in to the mix were beyond Libby’s ability to answer as individual council officers are not necessarily aware of everything that is going on in council. Nevertheless, some members were able to air their views on matters such as traffic lights in Titiraupenga St, Three Waters, and ineffective councillors. Altogether, an interesting evening. Club night was followed several days later by the Breakfast Run, wherein members gathered at the Mobil petrol station near the airport and had a short run before finishing at the club rooms for a breakfast prepared by a hard-working kitchen crew. The breakfast was well received and proves to be a popular event on our club calendar. My thanks to this group, led by Maureen, for their efforts. One thing that did become obvious during the morning was that the temperature control knob on the urn had disappeared, and the only way of remedying this situation was by using a pair of pliers! This seemed to be a particularly unsafe operation, so the decision was subsequently made by the committee to replace the aging and unsafe urn with a new one. The outcome is that Heather Duncan has used her contacts and has saved us a considerable amount of money in sourcing the replacement from a local retailer. Thank you, Heather. Neil Chave has also been busy fielding enquiries for hall hire and ensuring a good standard is maintained by hall users. One unpleasant event that required his attention was the deposit of a baby’s dirty napkin in the rubbish bin in the kitchen. By the time our cleaner got to work several days later, the kitchen atmosphere was somewhat malodourous. A brief flurry of emails found who the offender was and should ensure this type of behaviour is not repeated. Overall, our tenants are careful and considerate though. One matter that is going to take some time to resolve comes about because of the recently enacted Incorporated Societies Act 2022. This act replaces the previous act, which was dated 1908! As a result of this change in the law, we will have to review our constitution. However, any changes will not come about until late in 2023, when the regulations flowing from the new act will be gazetted. It is only at that point can we determine what, if anything, is required. This joyful task sits quite firmly in my lap. Watch this space. Safe travels, folks. Eric

Owen Duncan Captain’s Report for June 2022 We’ve had a few members down with Coronavirus, but in general, more and more members are attending our club functions, and that is great to see. I wish everyone who has been sick a speedy recovery. Breakfast at the Hub has proved to be a game-changer with over 30 attending and enjoying the fine food on offer and sharing the issues that go with owning these old and classic vehicles, don’t forget to call me before 3 pm Friday prior to breakfast 07 378 8327 or 0274482484 for your booking.

Barry Hoffman is very happy with the number attending the petrol-heads coffee break. Close to 20 turned up at Lava Glass in the old cars, and we spent about 2 hours catching up with members, including Graham and June Mock. Great to see him out and about again. All members are welcome this month, we meet at L’Arte Café on Marpara Road at 10am Wednesday 13th (due to being closed on Tuesdays). Our Mid-week mid-year Christmas Pot Luck dinner is on again this year on Wednesday 13th July starting at 6 pm in the clubrooms. A committee member will ring you as we need to know if you are bringing a main or desert. Put on your Christmas bling and come along and enjoy this popular night out. The Hobby Expo is on the weekend of the 16th and 17th of July, and this year we are going to display New Zealand and Australian-built cars. As we have only been allocated spaces for five cars, they will be as below. The cost for a business card size add will be around $50.00, but this is yet to be confirmed with the paper. Car of the Month: Bryce Gliddon’s 1957 MG COUPE by Murray Stanley
Bryce Gliddon turned an absolute basket-case MGA Coupe into a thing of beauty. He purchased the vehicle back in 1983 from an elderly gentleman in Torbay Auckland, who had found it languishing in a paddock in Kaukapakapa. The old chap had done little with the car, and it had no engine, the doors had been removed, and there was rust in the body. While that might be a reasonably common condition at the start of a major restoration, this car had also originally been left-hand drive. It had been converted, somewhat roughly, to right-hand drive and sported a crude non-standard dashboard made from a roughly hewn piece of rimu.

This was not going to be an easy restoration, and you have to admire anyone tackling such a task. Not only did Bryce want the car restored, but he also wanted to do as much as possible himself. Good with his hands and a quick learner, Bryce was capable of doing all but the hardest tasks himself. The first assistance required was with the panel beating. Thankfully a friend and local panel beater, Graeme Bell, got Bryce started with that, and he was soon up and running on his own.
The only major problems occurred when he tried to line up the front guards with the doors and, in turn, the doors with the rear guards. Look at the pictures (later in this article), and you will see that he got it right! Painting the body was a daunting prospect, and Bryce didn’t make it easy when he decided to swap the original Old English White paint job for a glossy black finish. Friend, and fellow MG enthusiast Brian Grace, put his skills to good use, and together they painted the car in Bryce’s garage. While all the body restoration was in progress, so too was the restoration of the engine. Originally fitted with the ubiquitous BMC 1500cc ‘B’ series engine, the car

now sports the 1800cc version of the same power plant. Work done to the engine includes a full balance; a ported head; extractor exhaust; a “fast road “ camshaft (as opposed to “full-race”); a lightened flywheel; and a 45 DCOE Webber sidedraught carburettor. This all contributes to reliability rather than outright speed - although the car can still get along at a fast pace. The gearbox was replaced with a Ford Sierra 5-speed unit; the shocks have been uprated to heavy-duty performance, and a front anti-roll bar has been added. The original 1957 drum brakes were changed to genuine 1962 MGA 1600 discs. The pressed steel wheels have gone and were replaced with some second-hand MGC 72-spoke competition wire wheels. However, due to difficulties eliminating vibrations at high speed, these were also replaced by period-style minilite alloy centre-lock wheels. It was at an MG event that Bryce got chatting with a member of the public, as you do. “I used to visit a schoolmate during the holidays,” the visitor said, “ and we used to thrash around a paddock in Kaukapakapa in one of these - an Old English white coloured one.” It’s amazing who you bump into, isn’t it? Bryce had, by then, also found out that the car had been brought into New Zealand in 1962 and started its time here in Christchurch. Having been left-hand JULY 2022

drive, it could possibly have been imported by one of the American servicemen attached to Operation Deep Freeze. The MG has had an interesting history since its restoration. Bryce and Marion have toured extensively in it throughout the North and South Islands. But it has not been molly-coddled. Instead, it has been driven enthusiastically on both the road and in competition, as befits the MG “Safety Fast” slogan. Interestingly, the MGA design has a racing pedigree in that it was originally conceived by MG Chief Designer Syd Enever as a streamlined body for the company’s entry into the Le Mans 24-hour race in the mid-1950s. Bryce began circuit racing in 1998, starting with intermarque Sprints at Manfield and Taupo, together with a few motorkhanas thrown in for good measure. He also took part in the first-ever Castrol Charity Classic (plus many more) at Manfield. Since then, Bryce had run the car in the Leisuretime/tracer series at Taupo and appeared in several Whittaker’s MG classic events in Manfield. And if that’s not enough, he has also enjoyed numerous sealed hill climbs around the North Island.

The most recent event that Bryce has competed in was this year’s 5-day VCC Targa NZ Time trial. The event started in New Plymouth and finished in Havelock North, covering distances of 760 Km in special stages and 1,241 Km of touring stages, making a total of 2,000kms. The car performed exceptionally well without any mechanical issues due to Bryce’s meticulous preparation for the event. The emphasis has always been on enjoyment, and Bryce (and Marion) do get maximum pleasure from their immaculate car.

Car Badge of the Month Yet again, no mainstream car manufacturers apart from Chinese companies, so two interesting small specialist manufacturers this month.
Ginetta & Goggomobil
The Badge The Ginetta logo is simple and yet it contains hidden meanings from other car logos. The letter “G” in the Ginetta Logo resembles an inverted pyramid, which is a linear perspective on the road to travel until the roads meet at the end. This cue is an intelligent-design cue among car logos. It also presents an agility of a car in slope of the road since the letter “G” follows a track in a race. The Ginetta logo is a creative design worthy of being on the list of prominent car logos in the car industry.

History In 1958 the four Walklett brothers (Bob, Ivor, Trevers, and Douglas) from Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, produced their first production car, the Fairlight, which was a glass-fibre body shell priced at £49 for fitting to a Ford 6.0 or 7.5 kW (8.0 or 10.1hp; 8.2 or 10.2PS) engine and chassis. The first car, not destined for production, which was subsequently known as the Ginetta G1, was based on a pre-war Wolseley Hornet Six. The four Walklett brothers each had their areas of expertise. Bob was the managing director, Douglas was the mechanical engineer and handled the electrical work, Ivor was the designer, and Trevers was the stylist, working closely with Ivor. From their original base, the company moved to Witham, Essex, in 1962 and, between 1972 and 1974, operated from larger premises in Ballingdon Street adjacent to the railway bridge in Sudbury, Suffolk, before returning to Witham. In 1988, the Walklett brothers needed bigger premises and so moved the company to Scunthorpe, where they could expand. On 7 November 1989, the Walkletts sold Ginetta to an international group of enthusiasts based in Sheffield and run by managing director Martin Phaff. Ginetta was in a strong financial position at the time of its sale, and the Walkletts went on to retire. Under Phaff, the company went on to produce the Ginetta G20 and the Ginetta G33. It was during this period that the company hit troubled times. In late 2005, Ginetta was acquired by LNT Automotive, a company run by racing car driver, engineer, and businessperson Lawrence Tomlinson. His aims were in line with the founders to produce innovative, capable, and great value sports cars. In mid-2007, Ginetta moved to a factory near Leeds, with a target to sell 200 cars per year. Tomlinson himself penned the base specification for the Ginetta G50, which marked 50 years of Ginetta production and became a successful GT4 car. In March 2010, Ginetta acquired the Somerset-based sports car manufacturer Farbio and re-badged their car as the Ginetta F400. In March 2011, Ginetta launched the G55, which competed in the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup and was built to comply with the GT3 class regulations. In October 2011, Ginetta launched the G60, a two-door mid-engine sports car developed from the F400 and powered by a Ford-sourced 3.7 litre V6 engine.

In 2017, Ginetta acquired Blyton Park test circuit near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, as a proving track to help develop road and race models.
The Badge The German manufacturer of cars and vans Glas existed in 1958-1969. The brand received its name from the name of Hans Glas, the owner of the enterprise. Simple and very effective, the company’s logo was originally formed in a monochrome but soon enough acquired a colour version. The basis of the logo, emphasizing the desire for speed, was a stylized figure – a circle with wings. In the centre of the circle was the first letter of the brand, which in the later versions of the logo was surrounded by the full name of the brand – Glas Auto Mobile. The “wings” consist of four “feathers” on each side. The company considered that the “wings” could raise its brand over other competitors – the desire to create an inexpensive, reliable, fast and attractive car. Indeed, the company was able to attract and retain its customers as best as possible because the first car, under the Glas logo, received the nominal name – Goggomobil, and this is the name awarded to their cars.
History Goggomobil was a series of microcars produced by Hans Glas GmbH in the Bavarian town of Dingolfing between 1955 and 1969. from the early 20th century to the early 21st, when the most recent redesign was carried out JULY 2022

The first in this series was the Goggomobil T250. It was introduced by Glas at the 1954 IFMA International Bicycle and Motorcycle Show as a transportation option that was not much more expensive than a regular motorcycle. Post-WWII Europe was beset by austerity, and the depressed economic situation meant that many people who needed cars for transport simply could not afford them. This led to the skyrocketing popularity of motor scooters from companies like Vespa and Lambretta, and small-capacity motorcycles from companies like Iso and Ducati. Another popular solution was microcars, tiny little automobiles that were often powered by motorcycle or scooter engines and typically had space for just two adults. These microcars offered protection from the elements, which was particularly welcome in wet weather and during the long European winters. Glas had started out making tractors before diversifying into motor scooters, microcars, and full-sized automobiles. After showing their new Goggomobil T250 to the public in 1954, the company found they struggled to keep up with demand. Goggomobil production would run from 1955 right the way through until 1969, a number of models were offered, including the T250, T300, and T400, and the more upmarket TS 2+2, TS250, TS300, and TS400. Over 280,000 Goggomobils were built during this time, and only a tiny fraction of that number has survived to the modern day in the care of collectors and museums. By George

Targa 2022 South Island VCC 2 Day Time Trial Itinerary & Accommodation Suggestions

Accommodation within easy walking distance of Targa Rally HQ at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson will be very sought after for this event. Saturday 15th October: Day 1/Leg 1:
Starts from the Trafalgar Centre, Nelson to finish with a car display in Motueka. Overnight: As for Thursday, back in Nelson above.
Sunday 16th October: Day 2/Leg 2:
Starts from Motueka to finish back at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson. VCC Awards Dinner: Venue and time tbc, (likely starting 7 - 7.30pm), in Nelson. Overnight: As for Thursday, in Nelson above.
