Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley Chairman’s Report – MAY 2022 It is a real pleasure to be able to get back to something like normality! After a lengthy period of having to cancel or postpone various club events, the April club night was a delight. About 60 members turned out to consume fish and chips before tackling a quiz set by my wife. Contestants had been warned that as Terri was an Australian by birth, there could be some odd Australian-based questions, and that proved to be the case. With the attendees split up into teams of 6 or so, there were some strange looks on members’ faces as the questions were trotted out. I think that all participants enjoyed the occasion. There was some positive feedback as people left at the end of the evening. My thanks to all of you who were instrumental in ensuring the evening was a success. The Chairman’s Run, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday 17th April, was postponed as that date was Easter Sunday. There was a view that many members would have been away and also that there may have been a lot of holiday traffic around. Certainly, in my ventures around the town over the Easter break, there were a lot of visitors in town. I have never seen so many cars parked around the Sunday Market venue! Quite extraordinary. All the streets around the venue were fully occupied, and there were dozens of vehicles parked on Kaimanawa Reserve. I’m not sure how the cricketers will feel about that. I will also take this opportunity to reiterate the call I made on club night for some willing sole to take over the role of Treasurer from Maureen. She has done an excellent job over several years but wants to get on with other things she has planned. MAY 2022

We need a new Treasurer and some willing committee members. Please give the matter some thought and perhaps let Owen or myself know of your intentions. Committee meetings are held in the evening of the third Monday of each month and generally last about an hour. I look forward to seeing lots of smiling faces at the A G M on 11th May.

Captain’s Report

Owen Duncan Captain’s Report – MAY 2022 Our first event for May is our club breakfast on Sunday the 1st. Moving forward, we have a change of venue, which at this stage is The Hub out at the Huka heliport on Wairakei Drive. Apart from the fact that The Coffee Club has been our preferred café for quite a while, the Council has begun their major upgrade to the Lakefront Precinct, including Roberts Reserve. If any of you have been in this area recently, you will have seen plenty of cones, workers, and machinery, the layout of which changes constantly. The roads surrounding the area are often closed for work. The Hub is a temporary location until we find a suitable alternative.

The committee has considered many alternative options. The Taupo District Council offered the northern end of Tongariro Domain, the sound shell at the old camping ground, and the Gascoigne Reserve by the old Ambulance Station. All these have been considered by the committee but what do we do when it’s a real wet and windy winters day, or there is another event with priority, plus something close-by where we can sit and keep on eye on our precious vehicles. Options are all pretty limited. We understand that some members will not agree with the Hub, but until we obtain clarification from the Council as to what the future holds, we are forced to make a change. In the meantime, we continue to work closely with the Council on the availability and suitability upon completion of the works. Initial consultation indicates the new reserve may possibly be bigger and better than what we currently have and be entirely suitable. This is a work in progress for us. Additionally, I am in contact with the Taupo Rod and Custom Car Club on a regular basis to find a home that is easily accessible by all of us and the out of towners who visit the Car Jam advertised in the Petrolhead magazine. I will keep you updated on progress. Don’t forget the AGM is coming up on Wednesday 11th May 2022 at 7.00 pm. We are still looking for a treasurer as Maureen is standing down after many years. She has been a real asset to the club and will be missed in that role. Nomination forms have been circulating should you wish to nominate somebody. We also require additional committee members if you have some free time. Funday Sunday on 15th May is our Chairman’s club run, so keep an eye out for an email for the details. With the easing of covid restrictions, we are able to recommence our regular events. Due to a clash of commitments, a couple of club runs have a change of date as per the calendar in this issue. Alternatively, you will always be updated and reminded by email. Of note, the Hobby Expo is coming up on 16 and 17 July. We will have a display again this year, and I thought a show of Australian and NZ-built vehicles could be our theme and make great viewing. If you have a vehicle fitting this criteria please give me a call.

Car of the Month: 1975 VW Kombi, Westfalia Camper (IK6) - Bitten by the Bug by Peter Lockie

In 1971 I was lucky enough to be able to purchase my first car, it was a 1963 VW Beetle, and it cost $750.00 I was 16 then, and a friend of my father’s said to me, “I hope you’re not going to become one of those one-eyed VW nuts” I had no idea what he meant but looking back on the intervening time, there have not been many days when an air-cooled VW has not been within reach, so I supposed I must have become a Beetle nut. My wife, Rosemary, has not had a day in her life where she couldn’t touch an aircooled VW, with her father been involved with the marque since its arrival in New Zealand in the 1950s MAY 2022

I have owned a variety of VWs, and my favorites would be the “68 – 70 Type 1. The first of the beetles with 12 volts electrics.

VW’s Models are divided into different types The type 1 or 1st generation is the original air-cooled beetle which, although it went through a massive evolutionary process, was in production from 1938 until 2003, with 21,529,464 produced The type 2 or 2nd generation is the Kombi. The type 2 also went through an evolutionary process, with the most notable being the change in body shape in 1967 from the split front screen to the one-piece front screen. 1968 also saw the introduction of the Type 4 engine to the Kombi The air-cooled types go through to Type 3 and 4 (The Variant), which saw the production of the 411/412 and the reconfiguration of the standard upright VW powerplant, to the flatter Type 4 engine, which allowed for more luggage room in the rear of the 411.

The type 4 engine was also used in the VW Porsche 914 My current driver is a 1975 VW Kombi, Westfalia Camper (IK6), which I bought in Dunedin in 2005. At the time, I also had a 1970 VW 1500, and I thought the Kombi would be a great addition to the fleet On looking through papers that I have, it was handed to its first owner on February 25th, 1975 in Hanover Germany, had its 1000km service in Amsterdam and from then until 1976 spent its time between Germany and Switzerland, before arriving in London late 1976. I have no doubt the 20,000 odd kms clocked up until 1978, were throughout UK and Europe. It was, however, regularly serviced by J. McHale Autos, an Audi dealer in London NW 10 I am unsure of how the car came to New Zealand, but it clocked up 8000kms between its last service in the UK and its first service in NZ in 1978, and I would like to say it was driven a lot of the way; however, this remains unconfirmed. The car was first registered in New Zealand on February 25th, 1978, and from then has had a vaMAY 2022

riety of owners up and down the country. The last documented owner was in 1986 in Waipu, Northland. Sadly, confidentiality blocks have restricted my accessing information from then until I became guardian in 2005 at the VW Nationals in Dunedin. Although over the years, there have been various conversions of the Kombi van into campers, the Westfalia is the closest to a factory camper to be found. The vans were sent from the VW works in Wolfsburg, Germany, to the Westfalia factory in Rheda-Wiedenbruck, approximately 150km from Wolfsburg, VW’s home base. Here the vans were converted to a varying array of layouts. Adaptations began in 1950 with the split window Kombi and carried on until 2003. These vans, especially the early ones, have over time become very collectable and can fetch extremely high prices. Ours is designated according to the build plate as a Westfalia Campmobile P26 5. 00012. Which means it is a standard camper with a pop-top and a gas/electric refrigerator, and I assume 12th in the series. It originally had an 1800cc Type 4 motor, now a 2 Liter type 4 and a 3-speed automatic gearbox We have augmented the minimal space in the van with a drive-away awning which gives us a valuable second room. Over the years, we have travelled all over the country, mainly to VW conventions and Bulli’s (Gathering of vans), although the three-speed gearbox has given it an intense dislike for hills. On one outing, while travelling up the Ngauranga Gorge in Wellington, it suffered a catastrophic engine failure when a valve seat flipped, allowing the piston to hit an open valve...The result can be seen on the next page.

So time for a new engine and its conversion to 2 liters. Its condition today remains good with several episodes of a tidy up of the body and re-upholstery over the years. We enjoy daily outings but sadly, as we get older, we both find we enjoy our own bed more, and sadly we have stopped using it as the camper it was designed to be.

REGULATIONS 1 The event is open only to financial members of the VCC of NZ. 2 At least one member of the crew of each vehicle must be a financial member of the VCC of NZ. If insufficient entries are received for any one class, those entries which are received will be allocated to the next suitable class TEAMS TROPHY The Waikato Double Fifty Teams Trophy shall be competed for annually at the 50/50 Rally. The aggregate points of all three vehicles shall determine the winning team. Car Badge of the Month: ELFIN & ELVA

Due to a lack of major car manufacturers beginning with the letter E, I have gone for two interesting small specialist manufacturers with a racing heritage.

The badge, Obviously replicates the Elfin name and head combined in a circle with what they produce at the bottom, simple and stylistic. The Elfin brand started in the mid-1950s when teenage Adelaidian Garrie Cooper started building competition cars under his family name. As the 1950s progressed, another Australian, Jack Brabham, was making an English car called Cooper famous, so Garrie went for Elfin, the brand of his favourite model aeroplane engines.

HISTORY: THE ELFIN STORY For nearly 50 years Elfin Sports Car Company has produced some of the most highly competitive sports and open-wheeler racing cars of their day, ranging from the 1959 Streamliner, to Formula Vees through to ‘big banger’ sports cars and the MR9 Formula 5000 of the 1980’s.

Elfin has won no less than 29 championships and major titles including two Australian Driver’s Championships, five Australian Sports Car Championships, four Australian Tourist Trophies and three Formula Ford titles. World Formula One Champion James Hunt raced an Elfin, as did the brilliant French Formula One driver, Didier Pironi. Elfin also took out the Singapore Grand Prix, twice won the Malaysian Grand Prix and also won the Australian Formula Two Championship in 1972 with Larry Perkins in an Elfin 600B. The original Elfin Clubman was designed in 1961 and 14 vehicles were manufactured. For the new Millennium, enter the “New Generation” Elfin Clubman Type 3 and MS8 Clubman and Streamliner models. Elfin sports cars are still produced in, Melbourne, Australia.

Elva was a sports and racing car manufacturing company based in Bexhill, then Hastings and Rye, East Sussex, United Kingdom. The company was founded in 1955 by Frank G. Nichols. The name comes from the French phrase elle va “she goes”. Anyone interested in sports racing cars is likely to be aware of Lotus, Cooper and perhaps Lola, but may be less certain at the mention of ‘Elva’. Club racing in the early fifties was cheap and cheerful, with many ‘specials’ constructed by innovative enthusiasts looking for maximum performance at mini-

mum cost. One such enthusiast was Frank G. Nichols. Having left the Army with a gratuity and some mechanical skills, he bought a small garage business at Westham in 1947. This was successful and he moved to another bigger garage in London Road, Bexhill where there was a good local following for motor sport. Bexhill (Sussex, England) was the town responsible for the very first road race on a public highway. After gaining experience in a Lotus VI, he ordered a ‘CSM’ from a Mike Chapman (no relation to Colin), achieved some notable successes particularly at Goodwood, and attracted attention from like-minded enthusiasts. He was shrewd enough to realise that this potent little car could be further improved and marketed, and very soon he was able to produce a similar chassis. ‘Elva’ was in business! Again, the name is a corruption of ‘elle va’ meaning ‘she goes’ and, from this very humble start, ‘Elva’ was later to be seen on nearly one thousand racing, sports racing and road going cars. Engine ranged from the Elva modified Ford side valve, through Climax, Ford DOHC, BMC, DKW, GA, Porsche, and BMW, to the big V8 McLaren-Elva cars in just ten years. There will be a petrol stop just before the lunch stop but it is recommended that entrants start with a reasonably full tank. RALLY STARTS AT :

The Porsche 996 is the internal designation for the 911 model manufactured by the German automaker Porsche from 1997 until 2006. It was replaced by the 997 in 2004 but the high performance Turbo S, GT2 and GT3 variants remained in production until 2006. The 996 had little in common with its predecessor, with the first all new chassis platform since the original 911 and a new water-cooled engine. Technically, it was a major change, a complete breakthrough from the original car other than the overall layout. Progressively stringent emissions and noise regulations, environmental concerns, a higher expectation for refinement and the need for a high-performance 4 valve per cylinder engine made the switch necessary. Buy/Sell/Swap Wanted: Wish to purchase an older vehicle. Ideally we want a vehicle that is user friendly. i.e. that will cruise at 95 – 100 kph as we will be using it for trips away (we live in Tauranga) and on daily trips out. We do not want a “show queen“ but something clean and tidy. Ideally it will be a coupe. It needs to be Registered and WOF. I’m thinking a 1934 Chrysler, Dodge, Desoto, Plymouth coupe would be good.
