Chairman's Chatter Hello Folks It’s amazing that another year has passed by and it doesn't seem all that long ago that I was writing the chatter for the May 2021 newsletter. There is no doubt about it that this last year has been like no other with the Covid restrictions having effects on our branch and National activities. Thank goodness we have now got rid of the red light as it has been disappointing that many activities have been postponed or cancelled altogether at National Level. We have always tried to complete our activities including Noggin and Natters that had been arranged in a safe environment throughout this year. It was great to see the committee for the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring hold fast and even with restrictions in place they weathered the storm and carried on with a most successful rally with all entrants enjoying our brilliant weather and our Taranaki Hospitality. It was a real privilege to be Host Branch for this event. Annual General Meeting 19th May 2022 This month is a most important one because our AGM of the branch is to be held on Thursday 19th. It is really important that you attend as the branch needs to really think about our future as we have committee positions to fill to ensure the smooth running of our branch. I have mentioned in my annual report that I will not be standing for the Chair's position. It is now time for another member to step up as change is good for the club with fresh ideas coming forward. We have been speaking about the future of the club at our committee meetings and there is a new constitution and new ways we have to handle our financial affairs and rules we have to abide by them from Internal affairs. We have also discussed new funding applications from Toi, Cogs, Lotteries that we must apply for to bolster our financial situation. The money is out there, it’s just a matter of asking. We also talked about New Membership with a focus on every member helping bring a friend to a noggin and natter. Get reports into the Daily News of our activities and our wonderful vehicles. Use face book to promote our club and members. Actively engage with other kindred clubs for regular Coffee and Cars. So we need you to think about our committee positions as we have members standing down. Chairman, Secretary, Club Captain committee positions are needed. So, Give It A go. It is most rewarding, please contact me or any committee member for anything that you would like to know about joining the committee this year. WE NEED YOU. I hope you have all received and read your copy of my Chairman’s Annual Report as said it has sure been a privilege to be the Chair of our Taranaki Branch. I would like to wish every member the very best for your future activities, enjoy your club and use your club vehicles as much as you can to get the best out of your club. Stay Safe everyone. Bring something for your afternoon tea.

Finding A Safe Pathway to Net Zero As the constantly cascading reports on combatting climate change continue to accumulate the FOMC executive has focussed on how to counter any adverse impacts on heritage motoring. While reassured that, so far, no direct official consideration is being given to either banning or phasing down the use of classic, collectable or vintage vehicles, in the longer term the proposed changes recommended by the Climate Change Commission will have significant consequences. For instance, the Ministry of Transport followed up the Commission’s recommendations with its own report “Transport Emissions-Pathways to Net Zero by 2050” which suggests fossil-fuelled vehicles should be removed from the fleet over time by introducing “a rolling age ban for used vehicles and/or a vehicle scrappage scheme” and it is even proposing restricting the use of ICE vehicles from 2050. Depending on how such proposals may eventually be applied they could become the kiss of death for heritage motoring and hot rodding, so it will be essential to ensure appropriate exemptions and protections are included in any resulting legislation. As it leads us down the Pathways to Zero Emissions the Ministry appears excessively confident that transitioning to “sustainable” biofuels will help decarbonise our existing light vehicle fleet. But a wide range of mainly pre2005 vehicles are not bio-fuel compatible. If they have not been upgraded with modern braided fuel lines and newer composition gaskets the ethanol in biofuel can seriously corrode the metal components and rubber parts in the fuel systems of older vehicles. The loss of 100 per cent petrol will seriously impact on classics, pre-2005 Japanese vehicles, motorcycles, hot rods, lawn mowers and chainsaws as well as marine transport and propellor aircraft. If we are to be deprived of unlimited access to fossil fuels at any time along the path to 2050 urgent and adequate investment in the development of second-generation biofuels will be needed to create affordable carbon-neutral synthetic alternatives to petrol and diesel which are not yet available in New Zealand but can be used in all vehicles. In the continuing absence of suitable replacements there will be ongoing requirements for non-blended 95 octane petrol but the practicalities of how those will be met are likely to prove difficult to resolve. If you are old enough to remember all the anxieties we endured with the phasing out of unleaded petrol you will also recall the petrol companies could have but refused to invest in supplying a leaded option as was done in the United Kingdom. So how do we guarantee provision of at least one brand of a non-biogas fuel if no agency is willing to meet the probably limited market demand? But even if we do succeed in retaining access to sufficient supplies of compatible fuels, we can also expect a net zero future will significantly change the world in which we have enjoyed our club and motoring activities. So innovative approaches to addressing the issues will become increasingly necessary. In the United Kingdom the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs is considering a scheme to offset their carbon dioxide emissions by linking with partners to undertake land acquisition and forest management. Here in New Zealand, there are already clubs like the Canterbury VCC growing trees on their properties, so trading trees for fossil fuels or their synthetic alternatives may yet become the sensible solution for all of us to support. Editors Report Sad news with the passing of Pat Steer at the end of April. Condolence’s go out to Pat’s wife and family and Pat will be missed for his contribution to club events, especially his passion for and knowledge of the two wheeled variety. Well folks, here we are at the end of another committee year, our Branch A G M next week and an opportunity for you to put forward your choices for the committee to run the Branch for the next twelve months. Later this month we have outings put together by John Muter, thanks John, details on Coming Events page. Other events coming up are our annual trip to the Mountain House in June, sharing in the 125th anniversary of the iconic Bertrand Road swing bridge in July and in August we will be able to hold the Car Show in Hawera in support of the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day, so get in behind these events people, that’s what our club is all about.
