Chairman's Chatter Hello Folks With the government’s decision to change the traffic light setting to orange should see us be able to organise events getting back to a bit of reality but always being mindful of the situation that has caused so much effect on all of our events over the last two years. The annual Maunga Moana rally was held and was successfully organised by Veronica and Steve Oliver. The rally was held on a weekend in March with the continuing weather that we had for the big Vero Rally held in January. The rally started in Inglewood and took the back country roads ending in Kaponga at the Swiss Club for lunch. What an amazing lunch was put on for us and all those that participated for the lunch were well fed and very satisfied. The afternoon section was untimed had silent checks and was over beautiful back country roads with awesome views of deep valleys and high ridges that we don't see driving along the state highways. I would like to thank Veronica and Steve Oliver for the organising of this event, Job well done. It was great that we could proceed with the rally even with the threat of Covid culminating and peaking right when the rally was to be held. Congratulations to Stephen and Tracey Winterbottom from Auckland who were overall winners and also won the Colleen Moore trophy and Danny and Sue Pattison who were first Taranaki entrants winning the Findlay Cup and other trophies. At the rally dinner Joe Fraser was presented with his 50 year badge by North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie. Congratulations Joe well done hope you can enjoy many more years. Other members received their confirmation letter with badge pending for 25 and 35 continuous years membership. With our AGM coming up very fast now in May it is a timely reminder that we need to start thinking about the elections of our branch officials as all committee positions are available. Please give deep thought to this as there are vacancies that need to be filled. It is now time for you to step up and put your name forward to help run our branch successfully. We have operated without a proper Club Captain over the last year and this position needs to be filled. We certainly need new blood on the committee with new ideas to take our branch and club into the future. As we are all getting older, we have to change with the ever increasing change that is happening all around us. To survive in this changing climate of the lifestyles we are now facing it is important to encourage the younger generation to not only participate with driving our vehicles in our great selection of rallies around our country but to take on a role in the running of the branch. It is not easy, as many members have found out, being responsible for the day to day running of even a branch like ours. It takes time and a huge commitment. It is not fair on the members who fill the positions on committee to keep putting them in the position year after year by letting them think that they have to continue, or they would let the members down. So, it’s your turn now. As stated, please give serious thoughts to the committee positions. There is change in the wind. Please speak

to any committee member to ask of any concerns and what you have to do to help on our committee. We need your support. So there is still some good weather around to get out and about in your vehicles and enjoy some Autumn driving before the real cold weather sets in and winter will be upon us. Coming Events 21 APRIL

Our guest speaker will be Fred Cook, originally a farmer from Huinga, east of Stratford. Fred was a keen tramper, especially in the upper Waitotara valley and also a keen motor cyclist. He raced for the New Zealand racing team at the Isle of Man and other European circuits in the mid 1950’s. Fred is a very entertaining speaker who will appeal to the men and ladies of our Branch.

Tawhiti Museum visit, entry to the museum is $15pp, and $15pp for a ride through the Whalers and Traders exhibition (optional). Northern members can assemble at the Inglewood Rail Station to leave at 10.00am. Stratford members can assemble at Stratford Rail Station to leave at 10.20am. Lunch can be had at the onsite Cafe or members can BYO. Members may also like to visit the open day, advertised earlier, at the Patea garage of the late Jim Beard, before joining us back at Tawhiti later in the morning.

THANK YOU Just a BIG thankyou to Colin for once again coming up with a brilliant MINI VIN run in February and for the convivial after run get together at your delightful residence. To top it all off it was great for myself, my trusty navigator Mike and of course “Rosie” our Georgeeeouse Rover (her words) to top the class with first place. Now some of you have asked how on earth can you possibly average 30 mph plus a few extra decimal points to make it interesting over a 50 km or so run and come in right to the second at the final checkpoint. I feel that it is only right that I should answer you in a way that you will be able to clearly understand....... Firstly...if you take the figure in total of the speed you require multiplied by the radius of the right rear tyre pumped to 31.2 lbs per inch, only if the outside temperature is below 28 deg, as it was, and of course you all know the speed of the earth’s rotation at our latitude and with the sun not quite casting a shadow to the bottom of the stone chip on Rosie’s bonnet, and with the driver’s window down to pick up the delightful sounds of a Rover V8, then you say.....” What the Hell, lets listen to what Rosie says is the perfect note “to shoot out my rear pipes and to see you home to get the trophy”. But she also said..... “That is history....Roll on 2023 and the 50th Mini Vin”. Thank you again Colin and all involved. Bill Goble, Mike and Rosie.

Editors Report What can I say, the spell of golden weather continued right through our Maunga Moana weekend, and it is still going. It makes one happy to be living on this blessed part of New Zealand. Nearly thirty cars turned up for our 57th M M Rally, and what a lovely day of backroad motoring it turned out to be, Thanks to Steven and Veronica and their helpers for organising this event.
