October 2019 Already the month is quickly disappearing with many events taking place throughout the motoring world. Snippets from the meeting as follows:21 members attended the September meeting. Condolences have been sent to the family of Mr Jack Knight who passed away recently. Jack was a past member who had contributed to the Club over the years. Taieri Tour Entry Forms were available for those wishing to join the Otago Branch on 2nd November. The Dunvegan Rally participants planned stop at our Clubrooms for their lunch break. Poster on the Notice Board for the Highland Fling Central North Island Rally 24 th – 26th April 2020. Blossom Festival – Robin McCall reported he would be taking part. The late Graeme Steel’s Austin Atlantic is at Golds Upholstery getting some work done and looking good. Ian McDonald donated some AA Motor World Magazines for the Clubrooms library and Philip Sell has Classic Car Books if anyone is interested.
Wednesday Run Report Due to the inclement weather the planned visit to Mercervale Nursery was not practical so a last minute change forced us indoors for an hour to watch movies taken by the late Wilson Elliott and Frank Cooke over 70 years ago in colour. We are fortunate to have these movies. From the Clubrooms the 20 members drove to Kaka Point on sealed roads for tea and cakes.
Opening Run Report The day began with members meeting at Milton to travel on through Dunedin and on to Keith Harrington’s property on the Kilmog north of Dunedin. An amazing collection of vehicles and related material was an eye-opener. Keith told how he had been collecting since he was 15 years of age and began with a Chevrolet. On exploring the vast shed I spotted Dodge, 1982 Ford Carpi an International Truck, Bedford, De Soto to name a few and an amazing area for relaxation. In the yard Tractors and Dozers displayed with a large area being developed for a truck shed. Out in the “Pomy Stable” a 1978 Jag and a Wolseley were to be seen.
Keith was thanked for allowing us to visit and commended on his collection. On to Waikouaiti to the Sports Ground Clubrooms for the lunch stop. A collection was taken up for the use of with an extra $35 being donated to our Club funds. An energetic lady was out on the field practicing Shotput and Hammer throw, maybe she was keeping her hand in for the upcoming Masters Games. Some stopped to see the Museum or look at the shop of yesteryear treasures to buy. Various routes were taken to arrive at the Kensington Tavern for a delicious afternoon tea, the landlord having celebrated his 70th the previous evening with little voice left for us. Thankyou Gordon for organising another great outing for us. Martin Dodge reported he participated in the Dunvegan Rally on his 1985 GB500 and thoroughly enjoyed it, meeting up with us at the Kensington Tavern afterwards. Trevor Twaddle from Waihola who had participated in the Rally way back in the early years reported he came down on his Motorcycle on the day to view the bikes at lunch time and enjoyed catching up with participants. Oldest bike on the Rally a 1927 model. Stuart McElrea. Russell Findlater and Roger Smaill also took part in the Dunvegan Rally.
Annual Clutha Rally 9th November 2019 Entry forms have been distributed among members, if you missed out please contact Gary Beaumont 03 4159 169 or Martin Dodge 027 357 5031. There will be some available at the meeting also. Being centred at the Town & Country Club in Yarmouth St, North Balclutha, which is a change from past years. The new format is looked forward to and the Committee have put a lot of time into organising the Rally. We look forward to your support. Members, no need to supply morning tea or salads this year. Wednesday Run 6th November 2019 Leaving the Clubrooms at 1 p.m. for an interesting drive in South Clutha finishing with refreshments at a seaside resort. The Heritage Park Group in Milton are looking for some cupboards for their Blokes Shed, if you have some get in touch with member Wayne Stevenson. Ph. 03 417 7294
