January 2019 A new year has begun – what a mixture of temperatures we are having. I hope you have had the opportunity to be out and about in your vintage vehicles over the holidays. We haven’t ventured very far at all, just working in the garden in the cool of the evening, putting covers over the vege’s to keep out those pesky rabbits that like to eat the newly planted things. We are lucky to have our hay shed full thanks to all the work of our family. Condolences to the family of past member Alan Johnsen who enjoyed driving his Triumph car and coming along on outings with the Club members. All the best to Graeme and Maureen Paul who have shifted to Cromwell. Also note that Olly and Jan Laytham celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary last year and we wish them congratulations. Moped Rally – Ian McDonald reports it was a great day. 24 bikes took part in the run to Kaka Point with a stop at Telford to look through the Stone House there. A visit to the lighthouse keeper’s house was made. There was low cloud so visibility of the area was hampered. The Fire Station was the lunch stop with boxed lunches providing sufficient nourishment to continue on back to the Clubrooms where several took part in a Thermette race. 3 wives accompanied the group and enjoyed their days outing. Thank you to those who supplied food for the day and helped in any way. Wednesday Christmas Run -The Christmas outing was a run to Taieri Mouth and unfortunately the weather was not obliging on the day. The lunch stop was held in the Camp Ground with shelter in the kitchen for those who needed it. The afternoon tea cuppa was held at the Black Swan in Waihola to finish off a grand year of outings with well wishes for the holidays etc. S.O. A & P Show day – grounds very wet so there were alterations to the programme. Duthie, Falconer, McCall and McNabb vehicles used for Queens’s transport. Tokomairiro Show Day 8th December. It was a little wet in the morning as we passed by but there appeared to be lots of people arriving so we trust they had a great day. The sun did come out later in the day though.
Snippets from last meeting: - Don Jenks has a beautifully made new Steering Wheel for his 1918 490 Chev Commercial made by John Martin. Malcolm Thomson has his Standard on the market. It has an 11hp overhead valve motor. Thanks to Gary Beaumont for all the work done for 50year badge presentations! A funny thing we saw on Christmas Day as we were heading south to Clutha was two people on pushbikes making their way north with a tree branch sticking out from one of the saddle bags – obviously not missing out on the festive spirit no matter where you travel or stop to camp. The Duthies had their Wolseley and Caravan down to Dolomore Park for Christmas with several other Wolseley members along to visit too. Local members have been out and about over the holidays on their Mopeds for an impromptu outing starting at Allan Budge’s place in Balclutha, on to Stirling where Brian Watt joined the group then Kaitangata with a stop for refreshments. A visit to the coal mine on the property where Buddy Jarvie once lived was very interesting. A wee head wind on the return journey but all in all a good outing. The Kaka Point Market Day saw lots of people on a fine day. An impressive vehicle I spotted was a Desoto belonging to Allan Bichan with the Invercargill City Council Caravan on behind, a very neat unit. Clutha District Council were represented there for folks to speak with. Several Rovers were about town too for a BBQ at the Falconer’s house. Wednesday Run 6th February - Meet at the Clubrooms 11 a.m. or Beaumont at 12 o’clock, for an outing to Roxburgh. Bring your picnic lunch or buy when you get there. There will be a stop for fruit and afternoon tea will be at Millers Flat. Gore Branch Festival Rally – 16 February 2019 Come along for a great days outing with our neighbouring Club. They make us very welcome and the Rally Route is always interesting. Entry Forms will be available at the Clubrooms on Meeting Night.
