August 2020 Spring is just around the corner, already seeing pretty flowers appearing in the garden and pots about the place. We look forward to some warmer days as the firewood has been fast disappearing over the colder ones. It is encouraging to see members supporting the meeting nights. Last month we welcomed Brian Andrews who lives in Kaitangata and owns a 1956 Wolseley 4/44. Please make yourself known to Brian as he participates in Club activities. Following the business we were treated to a DVD titled “Jean Deans Raced the Train” A story set in the wartime era showing Jean racing along as the train bought the mail with news of loved ones from overseas, a touching short story with a sad end. This was based on a true story by Ross McMillan, known as “Blue Jeans” – his mother Jean rode her horse to get the mail with news from her brother. Thankyou Don Jenks for sharing this. Several suggestions have come forward for upcoming events. Martin reminds us of the Battery collection for Club funds. Robin McCall spoke of the Targa Tour which is to be held over 4 days but awaits more information. Robin was approached about Daffodil Day event fundraising by the local branch of the Cancer Society, unfortunately Covid developments have put an end to this and Otago Branch have not organised anything for us to join in. Phil Sell spoke of a visit to the Motorcycle Museum in Invercargill – well worth a Club outing at some stage.
The Annual Dinner held at the Town & Country Club in Balclutha earlier in the month was well attended with over 40 people able to come along. The meal was delicious and the company wonderful. Thankyou Martin for organising this evening. Chairman Robin presented the Service Tankard to Paul McNabb for all his dedication and input to looking after the Club Treasurers Role. Congratulations Paul. The ladies trophy has followed me home once again to sit in place on our sideboard. Thank you for this. Gordon Duthie is organising an Opening Run for 10th October in the Middlemarch area with afternoon refreshments at Clarks Junction. Meeting point will be Milton at 10 o’clock. More details next month. Ian McDonald reports: - Wednesday Run 5th August to Gil & Ruth Edmunds vast collection of Cars Motorbikes and Memorabilia of house hold to farming. About 20 Cars from SOVCC 43 members and friends plus 10 cars from Dunedin. Too many cars and people to get a good count. Gil with a lot of help from Ruth have restored most of the vehicles from panel beating to painting themselves, which includes a great set of Minis from a pickup to a GT. Thank you Ruth and Gil, it was a privilege to view your collection. Afternoon tea at Wal’s Garden Centre finished off a great day.
