Welcome to the 2021 year of Vintage motoring with South Otago Branch. After some rather mixed weather it was nice to get some hot sunshine at last. Many changed their plans for camping holidays I’m sure, some of our family didn’t fancy tenting in the rain for 5 days so opted for other pastimes. Seems to be changeable this week though. Condolences to those who have lost loved ones, the festive season brings special memories to families of happier times. We acknowledge the passing of member Evan Williams of Clutha Valley in December. Our condolences to wife Jeane and family. A fitting tribute to Evan appears in the O.D.T.18 Jan. with his daughter-in-law, Julie, pictured in one of his classic cars at the Cromwell Classic and Hot Rod Show. Four of the collection were taken along. Veteran cars also featured in the O.D.T. They were taking part in the Dunedin to Brighton Run. Organised by Colin Winter it was another successful day showcasing these beautifully kept vehicles. The November meeting began with social time and Fish & Chips which I am sure those present enjoyed. The meeting was quickly finished with supper to follow. Tokomairiro Show Day – the weather was not the best for the show this time. Robin McCall attended with just 2 other vintage vehicles there.
Gordon Duthie outlined the programme. In good weather 25 entrants set off to view and hear of Lawrence’s historic past, the features of Gabriel’s Gully, Hart Brewery, and Steve Robinson’s unique property with water features, a water wheel and native bush. Thanks to Gordon and the team and a special thank you to Beryl Duthie and Natalie King for organising a delicious morning and afternoon tea.

Combined Rally / Southland Rally. Southland Branch invite members to take part in their Rally on Saturday 6 th February. On the Sunday 7th an event will take place which will be the Combined Rally for the 4 southern branches. All details can be found on the Southland Branch newsletter which is on the vcc.org.nz website or contact Robin McCall. Edendale Crank Up event Saturday/ Sunday 30th/31st January featuring Allis Chalmers Tractors and Machinery An article in the O.D.T. on Saturday 16th Jan. caught my eye. The V.C.C.N.Z. has presented E. Hayes & Sons of Invercargill a special award for preserving and displaying vintage vehicles and their support of the Southland Branch for over 60 years. They have over 100 vehicles etc in their collection with Bert Munro’s 1920 Indian Scout Motorcycle being the centrepiece. Only 8 of these awards have been bestowed since 2004.
Coming Events January February
2nd December 2020 Wednesday Run. A super spot for a picnic is the Mt Stuart reserve, sheltered and shady with a nice walking track by the river of approx. 1 km. It was there on the last Wednesday run for 2020 that we and the Otago members met for a picnic lunch after a coffee at the Forum café. A big thank you to Gaynor Falconer for the Christmas treats.
Moped Rally Report 06 December 2020 The Tuapeka Vintage Machinery Club at Lawrence opened their doors for our event beginning with Morning tea.
