Hopefully everyone has had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and has returned safely from New Plymouth. Esther’s Christmas lunch run was very enjoyable with a gentle run over some of the flatter parts of the Manawatu ending up at Murrayfield just north of Levin for lunch for 40 hungry travellers. Allan Hardacre put on an excellent presentation on all things Beer with some interesting tastings and explanations on how different flavours and strengths were achieved. Unfortunately only 18 people came along which was disappointing considering the effort that was put into the night. My Taihape wander was a fantastic scenic day out enjoyed by a very small group. I’m thinking that I might rerun this event Queens Birthday weekend even thinking we might do an overnight stop in Ohakune? Please let me know what your preference would be? On a brighter note Len Haycock’s New Year’s Day run to Tangimoana attracted 50 cars with lots of support from neighbouring branches. Sadly the big Packard suffered a broken gearbox top. I have the Veteran Rally well in hand and it’s looking like a great day out. The big event for the year is the Diamond Jubilee of our branch and 58 years of the Ruahine Ramble. Allan Hardacre has been working very hard on organising this event and it is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend!! I personally have been involved in this branch for 40 years + and would love to see this event attended by as many members as possible. By the time you read this there will be some serious and long overdue maintenance work being done on the outside of the club rooms not to mention fixing the major leak around one of the dormer windows. Unfortunately this COVID is not going anywhere soon so the decision has been made that anyone using the club rooms has to be vaccinated for the protection of our members. Safe motoring everyone!! Prize Giving and final dinner night at The Vero Festival of Historic Motoring, the Manawatu Branch of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand won the Award for the highest percentage of members attending the rally at 22%. This is a fantastic achievement for our branch!!! Let’s see if we can double it for the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in March!!! Derek

I hope that everyone had a great Christmas. It was great to see a good turnout at the Christmas Luncheon. For the New Year Day run and picnic, thank you Len Haycock for a great day and great venue. There were about 50 cars on the New Year Day run, from Wanganui to Wellington. We are progressing with the 60 years of the Branch and 58 years of the Ruahine Ramble. We are putting on a full weekend of activities. This is going to be the 5th & 6th March 2022. We are looking for helpers to help out through the weekend - please contact Esther. The entry form for the Rally is in the Tourer. If you can think of any past members of our branch that would like to come, please invite them. CALENDAR OF EVENTS.

ORMATION CHIEVEMENTS AND ILESTONES OF THE ANAWATU RANCH OF THE
PART 5 : 1985 > 1991 FROM THE BRANCH HISTORICAL LOG PUBLICATION
As well as the water storage tanks being fully installed by June 1985, that month also saw the Novaflow drains laid in screened metal in the main paddock. Even though a noticeable improvement to the drainage was noticed, it was also realised that drainage was going to be an ongoing problem. The winter of 1985 was a busy one, with battens for the main hall ceiling being installed together with some of the Pinex. The ‘Bullnose Iron” was rolled and the verandas roofed. A building, believed to be the first ‘purpose built’ motor garage office in the Manawatu was acquired and shifted to the Grove site – the building eventually converted to use as a ‘bunkhouse’. Attention was given to the fireplace surround and mantelpiece with red Jasper rocks located, salvaged and delivered by the Woodville members. The mantel shelf (which is a forty foot length of Jarrah) came from the old Ngawaparua road/rail bridge between Woodville and Pahiatua. The surround and mantle were completed three quarters the way through 1985. The two columns at the front entrance are ex the Pahiatua Courthouse and the lead-light windows in the supper room servery are ex Eketahuna. With work steadily continuing through the summer, the main hall ceilings were all finished and painted, and the two main toilets lined by May 1986. The end trusses in the main hall were closed in and the sliding doors between the Members Room and the Main Hall were completed. The servery in the members’ room kitchen was finished and additional shrubs and trees were planted in the grounds. To assist with the maintenance of the grounds a tractor was acquired. By the end of 1986 the lining of the walls of the main hall (the lower half in ply and the upper half in wallpaper over ‘Gib Board’) was completed. The hall was usable for functions at this time even though the main kitchen was still not functional. But not having a kitchen didn’t stop the first wedding to be held in the hall - which was that of the daughter of one of the club members. One of the members received information that the Chateau Tongariro were replacing their dining room carpet and that if someone could remove it and have the dining room cleaned up before the guests came down for breakfast, that they could have the carpet. Three members headed off in a ‘big’ truck some hours before sunrise, lifted the carpet, loaded it onto the truck and cleaned the room up in good time for the breakfast guests. Page 9

In the following weeks a couple of members spent many hours joining the pieces together to make a very presentable floor covering for the Members Room. At this time members were also staining, painting and working on the general finishing off of the Members’ Room. By the middle of 1987 curtains had arrived which once hung gave the Members’ Room a cosy and lived in look. Linoleum had also been laid in the two main toilets by mid-1987. By mid-1988 the floor of the main hall had been sanded and polyurethaned. With that job finished, with the exception of the ‘Club Captains Room’ and the main kitchen, the complex was getting close to being finished. At a Special General Meeting an amendment to the constitution extended the permissible term of Chairman from a maximum of two years to a maximum of three years. Early in 1989 time was spent upgrading the parts shed – a project which had been neglected while other projects were being worked on. All of the parts were shifted to one side of the shed, the other half of the floor was then leveled, compacted and boxing put in place. Once the concrete was poured and had time to cure, the process was completed on the other half. With a nice floor to work on, the building was then ‘bird proofed’ and the interior walls painted. Members had located some ‘slot angle steel shelving’ from the former premises of Moller Motors which was obtained and re-erected in the parts shed. In September of 1989 the branch learned that the Swapmeet date had been poached by the Christchurch VCC Branch. Even though in different islands, because the Trades people (on whom we rely heavily to support the Swapmeet) go from one to the other we had to move our date (the Christchurch Branch were unbending and unrepentant). Negotiations with the Racing Club enabled us to use the Awapuni Racecourse – a move that really paid off as support and attendance increased beyond belief. The main kitchen was completed in December 1991 and January 1992 using subcontractors who were able to finish it off in time for the 2nd Pan Pacific Rally which was hosted by the Manawatu Branch. The event, under the jurisdiction of the National Body, was mammoth and was centred at the Awapuni Racecourse, with whom the branch by now had a good working relationship because of the Swapmeets. The Hub Rally Venues were well chosen with the towns, districts concerned going to considerable trouble to arrange suitable displays and entertainment for the competitors and their crews. Some of the road surfaces came in for comment as some overseas visitors had never heard of a ‘Metal’ road, let alone driven on one. A quick learning curve and Page 10

they soon found out what dust was and what motorists of the period had to put up with. There was a ‘Spur of the Moment’ decision to have a ‘Twilight Parade’ of cars around the city. This was a major public relations gesture, very well received by the public who in places were standing three or four persons deep to catch a glimpse of the cars. Some 10,000 people came through the gates at the racecourse to view the cars that were on display.
This was the third National event which had been organized by this branch on behalf of the VCC of NZ (inc.) – the first being the North Island (Castrol) Easter Rally in 1971 and the second being the North Island Easter Rally in 1984. After the Pan Pacific Rally there were two ‘pre-fab’ garages to be sold off – the branch purchased one of them and re-erected it at “The Grove” to be used as a tractor / tool shed.
A man said to his wife one day, ‘I don’t know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time’. His wife responded, ‘Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so that you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so that I would be attracted to you !’. Page 11

On the morning of 18 December Rob Eason picked me up in his Subaru Forester and we headed up to Marton to meet up with Derek Haycock in his 29 Chev Tourer, his father Len in his 29 Chev Coupe, and Cliff Bennett in 30 Model A sedan. Derek was looking at roads suitable for entrants to get to the upcoming “Highland Fling“ - Rob had been told there may be some off road farm tracks etc. associated with the rally, so we were looking forward to showing the off road ability of the Subaru, which are among the top of the class for that. But time ran out that day. We basically followed the Turakina Valley Rd, through it’s many huge hills, stopped to view the waterfall which was very impressive with the huge rains we had at that time. Cup of tea, followed by more big hills till Mataroa, had our lunch at Barry Cleaver’s farm near there. Spent an hour looking through his sheds which contained many projects in various state of repair. On to main highway, and fuelled up at Taihape, then headed south, and on the big passing lane we cautiously turned right into Manui Rd, which took us eventually through similar rugged country to finish above Mangaweka. Then through the town and took the scenic route back to Feilding, via Ruahine Rd, which had a closed sign, but no trouble to our cars, through Rangiwahia, Kimbolton to Feilding. Time for a beer and a chat. I really enjoyed the day, as I swapped between the three old cars, all of which went really well, and are a credit to their owners. Pat Henaghan

Castrol North Island Rally at Palmerston North After many weeks of work, rally organiser Graham Sutherland and his secretary/wife Lynn, saw the entrants roll steadily into rally headquarters at the Showgrounds, Palmerston North, on Good Friday. On hand to welcome them was chairman Graham Masemann, club captain Graeme Ax and his wife, together with an army of wives to provide refreshments. Early in the day came news that Mr. C. Liddell and 1930 Ford A, of Auckland, would not make it, the Ford having run a big end at Ngaruawahia. Then came news that Earl Gill’s 23/60 Vauxhall had done the same near Bulls. A spare con-rod was sent into Palmerston North for machining, a shed was borrowed from a friendly native and the replacement subsequently carried out. Rod Welch borrowed a garage and a floor jack or two to remove the rear axle of his 1914 Ford T. However, all was well - he was just replacing some of the inner mysteries of the diff. It seems that a Ford T cannot be towed on an A frame without first removing part of the diff, or the transmission bands will do strange things. Having received a bulging envelope with maps, instructions, tickets, etc., entrants found their way to their accommodation, and prepared for the noggin ‘n natter and briefing in the evening. A friendly atmosphere prevailed and was made more friendly by the large quantities of punch and ale which were consumed. The mayor of Palmerston North (Mr. Black) welcomed entrants to the city in its centennial year and Mr Colin May, of Castrol, the rally sponsors, also welcomed the entrants. Unfortunately the evening was marred towards the end by the news that three girls from Rotorua in a Ford A had been involved in a collision at one of Palmerston North’s less desirable intersections. One girl spend most of the weekend in hospital with a damaged knee. The A suffered the loss of a bumper, the loss of one head light rim, damage to both front mudguards, and a bent dub iron. Roy Fleet with a hammer was later, able to repair the damage sufficient for the car to be driven home. Saturday, as the entrants lined up for the start of the timed run, was cold, windy and showery. Mr Black flagged the first cars away on two routes, for the slow a total of about 70 miles and for the fast a total of about 100 miles. At one intersection at Colyton three control points were set up at one time, and one suspects that Graeme Ax who planned the route was secretly hoping for a little Page 22

confusion, however none seemed to result and all arrived as planned at the lunch stop at Totara Reserve in the Pohangina Valley. All except the 1902 Thomas motor-cycle of Gary Turner of Blenheim, and Bill Delaney in his well-known Crestmobile who both arrived rather late. The Thomas, which was on its first rally, indulged in some of the dreaded belt slip or something similar I believe, and the Crestmobile needed some work on a driving chain which caused ‘tail end Charlie’ Bill Olson to return to Palmerston North for the necessary bits. On Saturday evening a large crowd turned out to partake of dancing, more noggin ‘n natter, and a sumptuous supper at the cabaret evening. On Sunday morning the weather promised better although a cold wind was still about. Cars entered the oval of the showgrounds to park nose onto the fence, there to be viewed but not touched by the paying public, to be judged for concours by Rex Porter, of Carterton, and his assistants, the motor-cycles by Glen Bull, and in turn to move out to an asphalted area to try out four driving tests. The tests were devised by Gordon Routledge and provided each entrant with a variety to test his car’s and own capabilities. The first tested acceleration and braking, the second was a double garaging test, the third a dozen cups had to be collected off poles arranged in a ‘noughts and crosses’ pattern. In spite of their size, some of the larger cars, notably Brian Jackson’s huge 1930 Rolls Royce, recorded some good times in this test by going about it the right way. The fourth test was a slow speed one and drivers had to walk alongside their cars. (Motor cycles had to ride without ‘footing’). Rod Welch in his 1914 Ford T amazed the crowd with a time of nearly two minutes more than the average of about 40 or 50 seconds. Meanwhile, Gary Moore surveyed the oval from a glass box and gave facts and figures to the public. He kept up a running commentary all day and must have had a thirst at the end of it. A few cars provided a little unauthorised diversion by trying out the stock car track. A large number attended the dinner and prize giving on Sunday night, in fact a larger number than accounted for. This had the caterers worried for a while but to their credit they accepted the situation with good humour. Everybody was eventually fed and I don’t think anyone went short. While we were finishing off the last drops of wine the speeches were made by our chairman and by representatives of Castrol, Palmerston North and the centennial committee. Then the big moment, who won? Following that, every entrant came forward and collected an envelope containing a bronze rally plaque, a photograph of their car, a copy of the results sheet, and two petrol vouchers. homework by various hard working people, (if I name them I’m sure to miss someone). On Monday entrants moved out of the city and on the way some called into rally headquarters for a farewell and a cup of tea. Well the rally was over, and proved to be the successful result of much hard work by several local members. Mistakes were made to be sure, but in the main they were taken good humouredly by the entrants, and we hope they will remember this rally as a good one. A pleasing feature was the number of entrants from as far afield as Christchurch and Ashburton as well as some from Nelson and Blenheim and from nearly every branch in the North Island. FREE TO A GOOD HOME : Humber Hawk - c 1956 My father has his childhood family car in his garage and it is a Humber Hawk (? 1956 era) and in recent years he has been doing it up with a friend. He has been recently diagnosed with dementia and has been placed into rest home care with the enduring power of attorney put in place. My mother is wanting to find another home for the car. She doesn't want any money for it. We know the engine has been reconditioned and runs. I'm told that the gearbox and diff have also been done but I can’t guarantee this. I don’t believe it's been on the road for a number of years. The body needs work. My mother would be keen for someone to take the car away at their own cost to do what they would like with it. Your husband mentioned that you might be able to put this request in the club newsletter at the end of the month. I have also included some photos of the car in the garage. So I thought I would let you know that the car of Beresford Howard-Hill, his Fiat 509 Spyder is now back in Feilding…. It’s been so long now, I am unsure if anyone will remember. The car has been sitting for about 17 years and I have only just this weekend got my hands on it. Supposedly she does run, but her body has a few rough patches, and three of her tires are beyond saving… Luckily she came with quite a few spare parts. Thank You Best Regards Graham Tulett Traction Avant register administrator VCC member Canterbury Branch THE CITROEN TRACTION AVANT REGISTER IS NOW ONLINE The NZ Citroen car club's website is now being used to help record ( potentially all ) of the Super modern 12s and Light 15 vehicles that remain in New Zealand today. Whether they are restored, driveable, under restoration, donor cars, only suitable for spares or just a pile of parts, there's a place for them on the register. All models and body styles are included in the register and members and non members alike are urged to record the details of their car/s by clicking here The Citroën Car Club of New Zealand Inc (cccnz.club) and clicking "Traction Register Launched" on the right hand side of the home page - then just follow the prompts. "There is no need to log in" on the website and all owners have a choice as to whether they will allow their details to be shared with other owners, or want their personal details to remain private and their vehicle details used for statistical information only. The advantages of registering are numerous but being able to tap into the pool of knowledge of people with a similar model to yours, or being able to find or supply a part that keeps another car running are two good reasons for a start. If you know of someone with a traction who isn't a member, you're most welcome to email me their details and I'll contact them personally. So far there are sixty something tractions recorded on the register. I think there could be as many as 400 more. PHOTOS OF MEMBERS’ VEHICLES TO DISPLAY IN THE CLUBROOMS With the Branch being Manawatu’s foremost historical motoring authority it is hoped that we can continue to maintain the display which depicts the wide range of cars, trucks and bikes that members have. It does not matter whether your vehicle is original condition, restored or unrestored. If your vehicle is not currently displayed in the members room send a photograph of it to - The Secretary, P.O. Box 385, Palmerston North 4440 All that is needed is a photograph in landscape layout which has a picture view area of 16cm wide x 11 cm high - meaning that the image of the vehicle needs to fit into that given size although the photograph size will be a little larger (i.e. 18cm x 13cm (5 x 7 inches)). Include your name, together with the year, make and model of your vehicle. Framing and hanging will be taken care of by your committee.
VINTAGE CAR CLUB VEHICLE CLASSIFICATIONS VETERAN: VINTAGE:
Motor Vehicles constructed prior to 31st December 1918. Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1919 and 31st December 1931.
POST VINTAGE : Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1932 and 31st December 1945.
POST WAR :
Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1946 and 31st December 1960.
POST 1960 :
Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1961 and 31st December 1980.
POST 1980 :
Motor Vehicles constructed after 1st January 1981 provided that no vehicle is accepted for this class until January 1st of the year that is thirty years after its original year of construction.
