From the Editor Well my only “vintage” motoring recently has been at Teretonga for the Evolution Motorsport Speedfest. I raced my 1975 Johnston Formula Ford in the Formula Ford class at this meeting and had a great time other than having to qualify on a track that started damp and was getting wetter. However I managed to qualify 4th in spite of only doing a few laps before coming in as the rain was getting heavier. Of course it then stopped raining and the three that stayed out put in much better times. I had some good races managing with the car running well all weekend and no issues and the only work I did on it was to adjust the front anti-roll bar to try and reduce the understeer around the loop. There was a class for VCC racing cars and officially this is actually a separate event with its own permit and officials. There were several of our members racing in this class as well as a lot of others running in other classes. A lot more of our members were there to have a look at the proceedings. Next month I will be away in Australia and will be unable to prepare the Rumour. Stuart Francis will be doing this for me so if you have any copy please sent it to him at stuartfrancis9@gmail.com

Chairman’s Report A very enjoyable and successful Southland Rally was held recently. Entries were down a bit this year, with only one veteran car and one veteran motorbike participating. Thanks to all who assisted in any way with running this rally, and especially those who helped prepare and serve the evening meal, which was very well received. I would like to remind members to please wear their name badges to club meetings and events. This is not only helpful for newer members, but also to those like me who cannot always put a name to a familiar face. If you are able to spare a couple of hours one month to clean the Clubrooms please put your name on the roster on the notice board. On the subject of helping out, the 2019 AGM will be held after the May general meeting. Please give some thought to filling one of the many available positions, Chairman, Executive member, social or kitchen helper etc. The National Executive meeting will be held in Wellington on March 23rd. The National Body has circulated a list of Constitution Rule changes to be discussed at this meeting. A copy of these proposals is available on the Southland Club's website. If you have any thoughts or views on this please bring them to the next meeting so I can take them to the Executive Meeting. The Rotary 'Drive a Dream' is on Sunday March 21st. Our club has provided 3 or 4 vehicles for this event for the last few years and we would like to continue doing this. The cars are used to transport participants between the various events. I have been approached by Tim Hanna, the publican from the Lumsden Hotel, who is keen to organise a weekend veteran rally based in Lumsden and featuring the Darracq. He will put together a food and accommodation package based at the 2 Lumsden hotels. Cheers

The Dunedin - Brighton 65th Veteran Run
On the 26th of January, 37 veteran vehicles, including 6 motorcycles with myself on the Humber and Wayne Nicoll, in the Cadillac, flying the flag for our branch, lined up to leave the Octagon - it was fair pouring down. Concerns lay around how the bike would go on the climb up Serpentine Ave, up and over the hill to Kaikorai Valley. Nevertheless, it went flawlessly with no belt slip as the rain continued to fall. Most people were lucky to have brought their wet weather gear and by the time we all arrived at Brighton, it had cleared and it was warm all-round. Field tests were completed and packed lunches consumed, before heading on a leisurely ride back into town. It is always so great to see on this run, that participants dress in clothing of the era and a prize is awarded accordingly at the evening prize giving. This year this was held at the Savoy on Moray Place and consisted of a lovely buffet meal and presentations. It was nice to have the two Invercargill vehicles receive prizes, with myself winning the overall motorcycle section and Wayne winning the field tests in his Cadillac.

Cleaning Our Club Rooms Two people are required each month, to vacuum the floors, check the cleanliness of the toilets and have a general tidy up in our Club Rooms. For two people, these jobs take approximately a couple of hours. No two people will be expected to do this job more than once a year. This system has worked well for the last few years and will continue to do so, if we get the volunteers. There is a list on the notice board at the club, so if you can help, please put your name on the list Any enquiries, please phone Trevor Wilkey at 03 212 8971.

Southland Rally It all started on the 2nd of February. We get the wake up call from Dad “let’s go girls! Cars to get organised”. We had to met at the club rooms in Otatara for a briefing and to get our leaving times for the rally. My sister Kaitlyn and I were to leave at 10.22am, 8 minutes before Mum and Dad who were to leave at 10.30am. We set off on our first rally, me in the drivers seat full speed ahead! (30 mph) and Kaitlyn fully equipped with the essentials to get us to our destination for lunch! We choose 30 mph as our average speed that we would travel at; as it turns out with my spot on driving and Kaitlyn telling me to slow down every 3 seconds we came in 2 seconds off our true time of arrival! After finishing the time trial we proceeded to follow the instructions that we were given to reach our destination (as by this time the time trial had taken it out of us and we were getting hungry). As we were driving, we were expecting Mum and Dad to pass us as they drive faster, little did we know they took a wrong turn and did their speed limit the whole way to lunch, not knowing that a sign on the side of the road that says ‘time trial ends’ actually means the time trial had finished! Next we had the field challenges. We let Mum and Dad go first in this one so we could get an idea of how it was to be done, unfortunately that did not go to plan and we were forced to figure it out by ourselves. The first challenge was a rope on the ground in a > shape, the challenge was to get your front tire right on the rope and the back tire was to get as close to the rope as possible, the decision where to drive on the rope was the actual challenge, out of the blue, taking a wild guess Kaitlyn and I were smack bang on, both our wheels were on the rope!! Next challenge was to name 4 tools that are used in the shed to fix model A’s, Kaitlyn and I had absolutely no idea about tools as they were very old tools, so we had to bum out in this one. And last but not least our final challenge was to guess the length of the rope, we started off very low and then actu-

ally had a proper look, tried to measure it properly, we then came up with a size of 16.2 as it turns out we were close to this as well, with it being 16.27 we were 0.07 off the mark! After all the challenges were complete we had the option of completing a fun challenge on the way home, this didn’t count towards anything so we decided to use it as a competition against Mum and Dad, this time Mum and Dad were glad to find out that they beat us! We then had prize giving and dinner to finish off the night! Kaitlyn and I were very grateful to receive first place in the field challenges, first place in the time trial, first place overall and best lady drivers! It is fair to say that our first rally together in the old car was a good one and the first of many! We hope to be back next time to defend our title, with Kaitlyn having her turn to drive and hoping to win so her name can be on the trophies under mine. We are also going to give our parents some words of wisdom so that next time they can come second instead of third! Thanks so much to the Vintage Car Club, Ray and Janet McCulloch. It was an amazing day and experience, we hope more younger people get involved in the car club in the future.

Midweek Run - 6th Feb.
The Wednesday run happened to fall on Waitangi Day this year so there were a few different faces amongst the people on the run. There were 22 cars and 44 people on the run. We travelled over good roads through lovely Southland countryside to finish at the Three Rivers Hotel at Wyndham for lunch and what a lovely lunch it was. It was a superb meal for $15.Thanks to Dorothy and Alwyn for a great day out. Once again it was noticeable that a few were not wearing name tags. Please try to remember to wear them as it makes it a lot easier for a lot of us older ones who remember faces but not names.

Russell’s Ramblings On the restoration scene: Nick Wiering’s latest Harley restoration is a 1930 Model DL45. He is looking to attach some missing jewellery. Howard Kingsford-Smith is searching for brass Ford T parts to assemble his raceabout. Ex-Southlander Alan Sutton is well on with restoring a 1926 Hudson Super Six roadster with a body based on a vintage Stutz Bearcat, with it now ready for painting. Motorcycle Scam. Some time ago I asked in an Aussie Motorcycle newsletter if anybody had a 1933 BAPD Burman gearbox. This week to my surprise an email from New Brunswick, USA came from the owner of a Zenith bike of his dad’s he was dismantling for parts. I asked for a photo and thought this chap must have lost his marbles to pull to bits a cool old bike. Closer examination I noticed the number plate had been cut off the photo and touched up. Warning bells started to tinkle. I searched on Google and saw an identical snap in the Brooklands Motor Museum website with number plate. The bells sounded like First Church on Sunday morning. The Brooklands Museum and East New Brunswick police were contacted. In the course of the conversation to a detective I said I thought that Donald Trump looked and gestured like Benito Mussolini with hair. He was still laughing when he put the phone down.
