From the Chair Chairman’s Report Hi Folks Well what a month firstly we heard that one of our ‘bikie’ members passed away suddenly, our thoughts are with Nick Wiering’s family. Then we had to cancel the Auction Nite with the possibility of having it at the September meeting – well that has also been cancelled as well as our Open Day for the Parts Shed. I attended the Round the Takis round last weekend in August. A good turnout with 21 members including a couple of partners. We headed out towards Tuatapere where we had lunch at the Tui Base Café then onto The Church, Manapouri for afternoon tea arriving at Te Anau around teatime. Once again this was a good trip with some windy weather and mainly fine weather. However I’m led to believe that a couple of the entrants had their wallets lightened by the Highway Patrol !!! OOPS On the work front amongst other club member’s work I have been scratching my head over fitting an overhead conversion kit I acquired some years ago to the motor of Tony Longman’s Tiki car. These kits are very rare as only 3 of these kits came to New Zealand and this one has ALTA No 36/226 and the date 12-7-52 cast on it. We are led to believe that this kit was fitted to the McMillan’s Morris Minor which raced at Oreti Beach in the ‘50’s We as a branch are the next hosts for the Combined Rally and at the moment there is a suggestion that it could be held the same weekend as our Southland Rally. Having the Southland Rally on the Saturday and then the Combined Rally on the Sunday. We will keep you up to speed as this progresses. Ray McCulloch

Editor’s comments. September already. So my next project is to get the Singer ready for the National Veteran Rally. I believe in ‘just in time Management’. I still have to finalise a starter (family member) for the rally as every time I shape up to pedal it the ‘handbreak’ makes a speech at me. I know she is right but …… I still want to start it myself. I hope many of you other veteran (vehicle) owners have similar intentions to participate in the rally. Let’s help the Gore Club with support and friendship that Southland is renowned for. This month I have an article contributed by Nick Wiering. It is by no means meant to be an obituary. I hope you enjoy his last contribution. Rae Wilson. We are required to keep this register. We know it feels like big brother is watching but it is not made available to big brother until such time as there is an outbreak involving our club. 5. Let’s show the Aucklanders how to responsibly do it. (1:30 pm, 14 September.) We may be lucky enough to return to Level 1 by the time of our September meeting. If so, we can forget all this till the next attack. It all bodes well for the rallies next month. Get your vehicles ready and your entries in. Who knows what Christmas will be like? Olly Olsson’s South Island Trip 2020. 10 – 24 March. Part III Day 8: Tuesday 17 March Said goodbye to David and Marilyn, Travelled to Takaka today, via Ruby Coast Scenic Drive, thru Mapua, stopping off at Jester House to feed and see the tame eels and have a cuppa. Onto Moteuka for some retail therapy for the ladies, stopped off Kaiteriteri Beach and up over Takaka Hills, stopping off to walk to Hawkes Lookout, with great view down the valley to the coast. Onto Takaka, and Sandcastle Seaveiw Cottages at Pohara, 8 kms from Takaka, for 2 nights, been very hot day 24°, Back into Takaka for dinner, Ph call to say Scenicland Rally at Greymouth has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 virus. Slight mishap today for Wayne, an argument with a tree while reversing! Day 9: Wednesday 18 March. Early start up at 6am, cool and cloudy, drive into Collingwood to catch 4WD bus at 8.30am for Farewell Spit and Cape Farewell Tour, 10 of us went, 6½ hour bus trip, was great, right down out to Farewell Spit, travelled 27km down beach to lighthouse, lots of bird life, nature reserve, fur seals, sand dunes, Murray our bus drive gave interesting commentary of the area and history. Lunch at No 3 Lighthouse keepers old home. Then drove 35km on NZ's longest natural sand spit. Carried on to northern most point of South Island Cape Farewell, terrific views way out over the coastline and sea. Back around 3.30pm and then drove to The Langford store at Bainham, been in the family for 4 generations, lots of treasures. Fish and chip takeaway tea on the way thru Takaka. Day 10: Thursday 19 March To Pupu Springs, and walked the loop track then thru Takaka to a salmon fishing farm, where we saw Al catch one on the first cast, 1.2kg was smoked for him to takeaway. Over Takaka hill again to Motueka, free afternoon and dinner at pub over the road, another hot day 22°. Day 11: Friday 20 March Said goodbye to Al and Claire from Timaru, was longest drive so far 275km to Greymouth. To Richard Horrell collection in Motueka, cars, tractors and plenty to see, 100 plus mainly English Fords and other vehicles, many interesting including Ford Capri, 1951 MGTD, easy roll 53 Prefect and many other odd model Fords. Then men went thru fruit packing shed, very interesting, including kiwifruit and new type of Nashi pear called piqaboo, Lunch at Tapawera Good run thru to Greymouth, very warm 20°. Dinner at hotel, and Rally Organiser from Greymouth VCC called into see us after seeing the cars all parked out the front. Told us there were 99 entries and a big job contacting everyone to say rally was off. SVCC Rumour

Day 12 : Saturday 21 March Rain for the first half hour out of Greymouth then cleared, stop off at Otira over Arthurs Pass on scenic route to Darfield, a cool breeze. Visit to Matts Miniature Museum, interesting collection in old shop and garage, Royal Enfield bike with diesel motor, many stationary engines which Matt fired up, 4hp high tension oil engine that runs 1907 ? milking machine etc. Lots of treasures and memorabilia, including wrecking crane from Lawrence, 1936 dodge sedan. Old photo on wall of Waikiwi Motors. After pressure from family, at happy hour decision made to cancel rest of trip and head home. Our motel host delivered us all a lovely roast lamb meal to our units. Day 13: Sunday 22 March Left Darfield at 8am, all on the road, and came down the middle of the island, a long day, and all home safely, BIG THANKS to Olly for organising this round the SI Tour, and to Raewyn who was his "right hand" lady. All the accommodation, visits to various places, meals, shuttles, taxis, they looked after us so well. A very enjoyable trip until the COVID-19 kicked in. I am sure we all were able to tick something off our own Bucket List after this trip. Thanks again Olly.
The Nick Wiering collection. Russell asked me to pen a few words relating to my collection of vintage bikes that I own and have restored since relocating to New Zealand. I have always had a fascination with old engines and a need to know how things work; I suppose this is the engineer in me. I have always had an association with bikes, be it mini-bikes, dirt bikes or road bikes, so when a 1925 Harley FE was for sale; the next progression for me was to own and work on one of these. The rest is history. Listed below is a brief history of my projects as they eventuated. 1925 Harley FE - Combo This bike as a solo was a static display at the Dunedin Pioneers Museum for over 15 years. When the Pioneer Museum building was to be refurbished, the then owner retrieved the bike and put it up for sale. I purchased the bike in December 2010 complete with a running sidecar frame but no boat. Restoration included a complete engine and gearbox overhaul. The engine is fitted with a Jim Chadwell (USA) reproduction magneto and a 1930’s M18 Linkert carburettor to enhance both performance and reliability. A boat was fabricated using a fibre glass template; a seat was modified to suit, SVCC Rumour

then painted and fitted out with oak woodwork and leather upholstery. Restoration was completed October 2012. In 1925 Harley released their thoroughly updated F (1000cc) and J (1200cc) models. Major improvements were a new frame, lower seat leading to a lower centre of gravity and thus better handling. With the new 1925 model Harley, this was the only year that both a hand and foot clutch was still fitted. In 1926, only foot operated clutches were available. The new 1925 Harley was also the first bike to be fitted with the now famous tear drop tank, still in use by Harley today. 1931 Harley C – The Dog This bike was used as a general farm bike in North Canterbury until the late 1950’s. It was then parked up in a shed until it was on-sold in April 2003 as a barn yard find. Initial restoration was completed in May 2005. I purchased the bike as a runner in December 2011. Restoration work completed includes; a new top end, gearbox and clutch plates overhaul, new exhaust pipes and a complete electrical rewire. This bike has generally been my go to bike for use on VCC bike rally’s. The Harley C model, 500cc side valve single was commonly referred to as “The Dog”. The Harley A and B models, 350cc side valve singles were called “The Pup”. The Harley AA and BA models, 350cc OHV singles were called “Peashooters”. 1921 Harley FE - Bobber This bike was purchased in December 2012 as a full restoration project. All major components were available including the frame, engine cases, crank, SVCC Rumour

cylinders and gearbox / clutch. Restoration work included a complete engine overhaul, gearbox / clutch overhaul, frame repairs, new rims and tyres, new tanks and guards, exhaust system and a complete paint job. Again the engine is fitted with a Jim Chadwell (USA) reproduction magneto and a 1930’s M18 Linkert carburettor for reliability and performance. Restoration was completed in September 2015. Other than the front and rear guards and the exhaust system being replaced, a new paint job, the bike would be generally a period correct restoration. 1926 Harley BA – Peashooter History – This bike was purchased from Jim Parker Indian – Melbourne – Australia in March 2017. The bike was 80-90% complete when purchased. Restoration work included a complete restoration of the top end (failed on my first outing), a new exhaust system, a modern Mukuni carburettor was fitted in lieu of the older Schebler GX. The bike was electrically rewired with a modern 6V coil fitted. Restoration was completed November 2018. The OHV models soon became known as the “Peashooter” for their unique sound. 1930 Harley DL45 – The 3 Cylinder Harley This motor bike was purchased in November 2018 as a partially completed SVCC Rumour

restoration from a VCC member in Blenheim. All major components were available but miscellaneous components were missing. Parts have been purchased from EBay and a DL45 part supplier in the USA. Other parts were either fabricated, machined or cast as required. This restoration was completed in March 2020. This bike will be my future go to bike, due to comfort and a larger engine than the singles. In order to rationalise production during the great depression, Harley installed this engine into their Harley “C” (refer above) 500cc single frame which necessitated, due to room constraints, that the generator had to be mounted on the engine vertically just in front of the forward cylinder, running off a bevel gear arrangement. Because of this configuration the bike was nicknamed “The Three Cylinder Harley”. Other Bikes Other bikes to pass through the garage have included a 1928 BSA Sloper and a 1929 Douglas B29. Both these bikes have had some restoration / rectification works completed and were runners when on-sold to another local collector / restorer of vintage British bikes. In additional several mini bikes have been fabricated, complete with restored 1950’s Villiers engines fitted. My every day bike is a 1991 Harley FLSTC (Soft Tail Classic) which I have owned for over 25 years.

Russell’s Ramblings Ray McCulloch is fitting an overhead valve head to Tony Longman’s Tiki Sports Car. The Tiki was a New Zealand made car manufactured in Dunedin in the 1950’s.
An article about Barry Keen, the original Begg driver, is in the latest edition of the Classic Driver. Barry started driving in a Ford 8 Special purchased from Jack Johnston and went on to drive many of the Begg Specials. These cars are now on display at the Motorcycle Mecca. The article is an excellent read. Another Ray McCulloch project is rebuilding a large 16/40 Sunbeam engine. Some local suppliers of refurbishings fitted to our DA Dodge were; • •

September mid week run. On a lovely spring morning 21 cars and 51 people left the Racecourse for the September run. We travelled out through Oteramika Road, Waimatua, Mokotua, Rimu, Morton Mains, Dacre, Cross Road, Glencoe, Hedgehope ,and Rakahouka. Then back into town via Mill Road and Findlay Road. Lunch of our choice was at the Invercargill Working Mens Club. Many thanks to Louisa and Allan.

Defribulator Fund Raising Project. It was stated at the August meeting that if every member contributed $10 we would have the project completely funded. How about it folks? THE 2020 VETERAN RALLY, 16th – 18th OCTOBER 2020 Gore Branch thanks those who have entered the rally so far. Though we are still at level 2, the committee has decided to carry on with the organising of this rally and is hoping for the best and keeping fingers crossed that in October we will be at level 1. So, at this stage it is still all go for the 16/18 October. Entries are still being accepted until the end of September, so please either email or post your entries as soon as possible.

Club Cars from the Past

Part 3 De Dion Bouton Back in 1960 I travelled with Warren Jordan to Balclutha where we met up with a number of South Canterbury cars at an event put on by the local car club. We stayed with Bob Scott, who was a contact of Warren’s through the SSCC. We asked if there were any old cars around, as you do, and Bob took us to a shed in Kaitangata, where there reposed most of a 1909 Humber twin, similar parts of a 1907 De Dion Bouton, and 3 veteran motorcycles, a 1913 BSA, a 1912 Matchless, and most of a 1912 BSA. Warren negotiated the purchase of the Humber and my brother Robin got the bikes but the De Dion was not for sale. A couple of years later though, Alan Meredith was successful in obtaining it and he made an exemplary job of restoring it. He would likely still have been a teenager when he finished it, as indeed Robin was when he had the 1913 BSA on the road. That was not unusual back in the day, with Russell and David McIvor getting their De Dion on the road when similarly youthful. Alan’s car is now in the Southward Trust Museum. The photos shows Alan at the helm of his car with the late John Dale with him and Russell and David (driving) in their car. The 1903 De Dion of Tom McKenzie was another familiar car at early events, thankfully still in family ownership, and I understand making the occasional appearance. The well known 1912 De Dion Bouton of Frank Brookland was seen in very early events having been borrowed by Jack Lyons and Shack Sharp from Frank’s grandfather Mr Saunders who reclaimed it and stored it for another 20 years despite numerous attempts to purchase it. It is great that it too is still family owned and still in Southland. SVCC Rumour

Many members will have seen Alan Meredith’s outstanding book Pioneer Motoring in Southland which reveals just how prevalent De Dions were in early Southland. Vernon T Russell was a President of the early Southland Vintage Car Club and had the 1903 type S De Dion Bouton purchased by his father Arthur Russell in 1905. It stayed in Southland for a 100 years before passing to a new owner in Christchurch. In the photo the Type S is next to Tom McKenzie’s car. The car in which I made the trip to Balclutha was the 1922 Morris Cowley which was Warren Jordan’s first restoration effort. It motored very smoothly but cosmetically left a bit to be desired although the photo does not show it. Early cars were originally coach painted, ie with a brush. Warren did just that and it really showed. Ray Lindsay, on inspecting it, was moved to murmer, “That’s the first time I have seen a car painted with a knife and fork!” That’s me alongside Warren and just like David and Russell haven’t changed a bit! 54th Annual ARROWTOWN MOTOR CYCLE RALLY 14 & 15 NOVEMBER 2020
The Southland Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand extends a warm invitation to enter in the 53rd Arrowtown Rally to be held on 14 and 15 November 2020. The rally will follow the same format as last year: 1. The backup vehicle will leave Feldwick Gates at 8:30 sharp, loading at 8:00am for those requiring trailer space. 2. Call Joe Timpany (027 203 2990) if you need trailer space – please bring appropriate tie downs and be punctual. 3. Breakdowns, be patient, wait on the roadside and the backup vehicle will arrive. (Ring Joe Timpany if possible) 4. The rally will start from the Lumsden Railway Station with the first bike leaving at 10:00am sharp. There is a short direct route for older machines and a longer route for more modern machines 5. Travel via Rally instructions to the end of the timed section. 6. Then onto Kinston Golf club for lunch at your leisure, this is not a timed section. 7. The younger and faster machines will leave Kingston first and the slower machines will leave last, follow instructions to Arrowtown. Free time until the noggin & natter at 7:30pm will be in the TV room of the New Orleans Hotel. 8. We cannot provide an evening meal but food is available at the New Orleans Hotel and other establishments. 9. The Field Tests will be held at the Arrowtown, Willcox Green on Sunday morning, starting at 10:30
