From the Chair Hi Folks At our October Executive, the Executive decided that it would like members to restart wearing their name badges when attending Club events. This was a practice that has lapsed over the years. This is an Executive decision and doesn’t need to go thru our Constitution. There have been a few negative remarks re this, but the majority of our members welcome this as they find it easier to put a name to a face. If you don’t have a badge or have lost yours, please let the Secretary know and a new one will be ordered for you. Until you receive your badge please use the stickers provided at the door upon entry. I have just finished attending my 44th Arrowtown Run on the Yamaha 900. What a great weekend, good riding weather covering 417kms. In all we had 26 bikes with 9 from out of town (a bit down on previous years). The furthest travelled was Mac McGarry from Auckland who escaped to Southland for some sunshine and fresh air. Barry Barnes, Darren Kidd, Ross McCulloch and Trevor Chalmers all rode from Arrowtown to Lumsden and then back to Arrowtown. The overall winner was Robbie Eunson on his Cotton. Well done. Results will be printed further in the Rumour. A big thank you to those who helped over this weekend. Once again, a reminder of the 50yr service awards function on the 28th November. If you are still planning to go, please advise the Secretary asap. The McCulloch family has donated a tray which will be competed for at Club events, this will be presented to the family that has achieved well on the day. For those of you who haven’t as yet paid your subs this will be the last Chairman’s report you will read. Thank you. 50 Years’ Service Award presentation. On November 28 (Saturday) our National President will be attending a function to acknowledge 50 Years of membership of the Vintage Car Club. We have 3 recipients this year: • Ray McCulloch. • Ian Ridd. • Brian Stroud. This will be in the form of the traditional presentation and speeches followed by a social time and afternoon tea provided by the club. We need to know numbers attending for catering purposes, so please advise the Secretary of your intention to attend by 23 November. The function will be over by the time the bar opens for the usual Saturday evening session. This was the first group to be presented with their 25 Years’ Service Awards in 1993. Editor’s comments. It’s wonderful to see club activities returning to normal even if the numbers attending are not very inspiring for the organisers. Please support them. Roll up and have a good day out with old friends. Please advise me if there are any happenings that we should acknowledge in the Rumour. I know only a few members well and certainly don’t know families. Just a phone call will do, but if it is a large item then an email would be appreciated but not mandatory. Traditionally there are 11 issues of the Rumour annually and I do not intend changing that this year, so this is the last you will hear from me this year. Have a good Christmas and get those vehicles prepared for the Southland Rally on February 7, 2021 and the Combined Rally the day after. Stay up late on New Year’s Eve and make sure that 2020 departs. Russell’s Ramblings. Barry Barnes made mention of my Model T in last month’s article so I thought I would elaborate on it a bit. My car came from Mr Charlie Hensen near Fortrose and had been sold at Todds Auction Rooms along with a flat tank Velocette which went to another local enthusiast. I got my driver’s licence with Traffic Officer Smith when I was 15 years old. Smithy, as he was known waved to passing motorists and asked me how I knew what speed I was doing as I didn’t have a speedo. I said ‘4 nicks on the throttle and 2 on the spark was 30 mph. (dream on) but he seemed to accept it. I was being passed by older and smaller cars and was a getting a bit peeved. I obtained a Roof overhead valve head with a Schebler carb bolted on the side. It had large valves, higher compression and a bunch of bananas exhaust system. The side valves were replaced with push rods fitted. It looked similar to a Chev 4 head. Thin walled bearing shells came from a Tuatapere garage. Short pipes with the ends cut on an angle were fitted, giving it adequate oil. A Bosch distributor was fitted and the flywheel magnets removed. A scoop was fitted to the transmission cover feeding oil to the front big end. I never had any bearing problems. A New Beauty sump was fitted also. Handling was improved with straight sided wire wheels. I had difficulty holding the car in low gear with the excellent acceleration. It would rock on the front springs and the big failing was a lack of braking ability. Barry Barnes and I drove the car to Blenheim, competing in a National Rally and I guess we would have had the fastest time in a Model T. I had imported a 1930 Aston Martin and was about to get married. Dick Collis from Gore bought the T and then it went to Burt Martyn of Timaru. It finished up in the UK with Mr Sullivan of Southampton. The SVCC later on ran the hill-climb events and the T would have done well in those. An old club newspaper remarked that in 1902 a Record motorcycle with a Clement engine travelled from Dunedin to Invercargill in 5½ hours. That must have been good going. Arrowtown Motorcycle Rally report Saturday 14 November weather left a bit to be desired after the previous few days of hot weather. It wasn’t wet (not quite) but it did get rather draughty. 27 entries were received but only 26 lined up for the start with 25 completing the run. Rumour has it that the Singer travelled further on the trailer than on the road. Above are some of the bikes at the start at the Lumsden Railway station. The route followed SH6 to Lake Hayes with only a small deviation (5 Km) onto Lowther Road for the end of the timed section. Then it was round the Lake and into Arrowtown. I had a chuckle at Garston (traditional stop no1) where the Pub was closed. There was a quite definite distinction between groups. The ‘old school’ group parked outside the Pub and the ‘new school’ group parked on the other side of the road at the coffee shop.
I have yet to decide whether it is the age of the riders who make the distinction or the age of the bikes. The age of the bikes appeared to be the defining thing as there was a wide range of ages in the ‘new school’ group. The traditional lunch stop was at Kingston and the field tests were conducted here. It was a very social time and the field test challenges were interesting. SVCC Rumour

I am not sure that this is legit, but it looks as if Tony is giving Casey some real help in this field test. It’s a shame Casey didn’t take advantage of the help. Over all, it was a great day out and we owe a vote of thanks to the organisers who are motorcyclists themselves and so could not participate competitively. Ladies Run 24 January 2021
The Executive agreed to reinstate the Ladies Run to our club activities, so on 24 January 2021 I have planned this year’s Ladies Run for those interested. We will be starting from 9 Abbot St at 1:30 pm, visiting a couple of places, having afternoon tea and whatever else comes along. You don’t have to bring your vintage vehicle, any vehicle will do. Afternoon tea is approx. $9.00 which includes a small hot drink, a sandwich and a cake. If you want a large drink that will be a little bit more. So, bring along a friend and we’ll see you there. Club Cars from the Past

Part 5 Humber Members will have had the opportunity to read up in Beaded Wheels about the 1915 Humber my Dad, Jack, owned from 1960 to 1986 so will spare readers a repetition of that. There was a slightly earlier Humber rescued in the late 50s. It was a 1913 10hp which ended up going to Christchurch. I think it ended up as parts for a couple of others. Gullick’s Garage at Winton had the remains of a 1908 Humber behind their building which was, like so many others, not for sale but eventually also went to Christchurch where it was rebuilt by Gavin Bain as a magnificent landaulette. It now reposes in the Classic Car Museum in Nelson where I had the recent opportunity to inspect it. One Humber that was brought into Southland was the 1910 twin cylinder that Warren Jordan acquired in Kaitangata in 1960 and referred to in a previous article when I inaccurately referred to it as a 1909 model. In the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in England is a 1909 model that has been part of the collection since the days of the original Montagu Motor Museum and George Brooks in South Australia also had a similar model. I believe Warren was in touch with both during the course of the restoration which he accomplished amazingly quickly.

When first on the road it featured the gearbox from the aforementioned Gullick Humber and 21in wooden wheels from a Ford New Beauty which was sacrificed to obtain these components. It was then painted blue and pale grey This was quickly followed by a mark 2 rebuild with beaded edge wheels, the correct gearbox which I hazily recall may have been obtained via George Brooks and refinishing in a more conservative and appropriate green livery. Unfortunately, I don’t have a colour photo. Sadly its sojourn in Southland did not last all that long and today it is an exhibit in the Southward Collection. I was surprised to learn from Alan Meredith recently that the late and fondly remembered Jim Lawry of FN motorcycle fame had a collection of early veteran Humber parts which Alan told me formed part of a couple of other Humber restorations. Alan himself restored an early Humber and knows his Humbers! Here is what he had to say (slightly abridged) regarding the Humber parts: “The other early Humbers I had an involvement with were the 1908 15 h.p. remains that lay behind and under Gullick's garage at Winton as well as the Jim Lawry project. The Gullick remains were of course acquired by Gavin Bain and restored as a rather attractive landaulette. This was later sold and now resides in Nelson having been owned by Errol Smith and Selwyn Jackson along the way. The Lawry project was collected from the Dixons at Mataura by Alf Woollett and passed on to Jim Lawry. Jim then picked up the Belsize remains (which are still unrestored) and passed the Humber on to SVCC Rumour

Warren. I then bought the Humber parts and on fully assessing them I discovered that they came from three different models. The distinctive radiator was from a 1905 10 h.p., the engine, gearbox and other sundries were off a 1907 10/12 and the chassis, axles etc were 1908 10/12. Clynt Inns bought these bits from me as he wanted the wheels for his Renault. Bryan Jackson then bought the other parts and sold them to Colin Keenan who took them to Aus when he shifted there. More parts were collected before everything returned to Auckland where Dick Andrews owned them. In 1995 I bought a 1906 Humber rolling chassis at an auction in Melbourne, shipped it back to Christchurch and restored it as a two seater. The Andrews engine, gearbox and a few sundries were identical so I bought them as spares and Gavin Bain took over the rest of the collection. A few years later I was offered an excellent unrestored 1907 rolling chassis in
northern Victoria. When combined with the other spares I had they made an excellent very complete and correct project so this came back to NZ too. Dave Hall acquired the parts from me and completed a comprehensive restoration with landaulette bodywork so at least some good has become of the Southland remains. The Dixon running gear now resides in Masterton and I think the early radiator has recently been sent to Holland or Belgium�. SVCC Rumour

Another Humber that has remained a feature of the Southland scene is the delightful little Humberette restored by Jack Toomey and still owned and motored by Phillip. It was repainted blue for the 1972 International Rally to
Nelson in which it participated, but this picture was taken around 1962 when it was finished in a colour close to that featured on early Humbers that rejoiced in the name of Humber Mole. It was probably the original colour and I thought really suited it. For a number of years a vintage 12/25 Humber lived in Otautau, but slow if any progress was made on restoring it. In the late 60s it was acquired by Ernie McManus of Gore who restored it and it was one of several Southland cars that ventured to Australia for the Cook Bi-Centennial International Rally in 1970. I think this nice little car is still in Gore. My old friend and part of the group of young guys who used to gather at the old Barnes residence at Bluff Road on Sunday nights, John Dale, alas gone now many years, had a late vintage Humber, a 1931 16/50 saloon, a refined vehicle that he owned for a number of years. John sold it locally over 40 years ago to someone at Dacre, if I recall correctly, and I hope it is still around. John also briefly owned the remains of an early vintage Humber 8/18 chummy ex Shack Sharp and Ken Rillstone. Alan tells me it is now at the Wanaka Model and Toy Museum, having acquired a new body frame along the way. I have failed to notice it in 2 visits in recent years so I fear it is languishing there still unrestored.

John, his wife Mary, and Humber were part of various motoring adventures from our younger days. They were also instrumental to Bulletin production for a period in the old days when I was Bulletin Editor, Mary would type out the stencils which would laboriously be printed on a very basic Gestetner machine when I could not sneak the run through on the automated machine at work, while John, who was a signwriter, screen printed covers, some of which I have to admit, turned out better than others. Howard Kingsford Smith has recently reminded me about the team work involved in the frantic screen printing sessions when Beadle Studios was strewn with printed and partially printed covers everywhere. How times have changed! It has been suggested to me by some of the participants that I write up for Beaded Wheels a memorable trip to Blenheim by 1928 Model A (Alan Sutton) my 1924 Peugeot, and John and Mary with Humber which began spectacularly with the Humber starting on fire in East Road (quickly put out and journey continued.) We’ll see how that turns out! The photo below is of the Humber on another journey however, dashing up the Crown Range. Preparing these notes always reminds me of my many old friends in Southland sadly too many of whom have gone now, and the great times we enjoyed in the wonderful camaraderie of the Southland Vintage Car Club. The Southland Branch invites you to participate in the
COMBINED RALLY to be held on Sunday, 7 February 2021.
Entries close Thursday, 26 January 2021. Eligibility: This event is open to financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand to enter their Class Eligible vehicles. The Event: Entrants will start departing from the SVCC Clubrooms, 46 Ariki Avenue, Otatara at 10:30am on Sunday 7 February 2021. All entrants are asked to be at the clubrooms at 10:00am for a rally briefing. General: The rally will include a break for lunch, followed by Field Tests. Please bring your lunch with you. After the Field Tests, we will return to the clubrooms via a leisurely return route. Prize-giving and evening meal will commence at 6:00pm. Payment: If paying by cheque, please add 50 cents bank fee for the privilege

Historical Run
6th December On Sunday 6 December we will be running another historical run around Southland. This will start 1:30 at 9 Abbot St and you can bring any vehicle you like. We will have a run around the area ending up at the Clubrooms for late afternoon tea. See you there Ray & Janet McCulloch
