From the Chair Hi Folks Well we are all back to semi normal with the Club activities again with the bar opened on Saturdays and meetings once again resumed. The Wednesday runs are now able to continue so please support these. Unfortunately the P60’s rally has been cancelled for this year as also the Waimea Motorcycle run. Further to that the National Veteran Rally which is in October is still underway. At the moment the entry forms are with National for their approval then they will be available for the members so keep up the maintenance of your vehicles. At our recent Executive meeting it was moved that as soon as the Rumour despatch team receive the copies from the printer they are to be mailed out asap this is so that they can reach the out of town members prior to the monthly meeting, therefore there is to be no copies taken to the Clubrooms on Saturday night prior to meeting however there will be spares at the Clubrooms on meeting night onwards. Our AGM will be held in July this year and you will see included with this issue a nomination form. Tony Warren has advised that he wishes to stand down as Club Captain so if you feel you can fill this position please fill out a form. Any nominations are to be in the hands of the Secretary prior to the July executive meeting (16th). Keep warm and safe and see you at the June meeting. Ray McCulloch
Editor’s comments At last we have a return to normal (at least as normal as we can expect for some time to come). Are you as sick of hearing that as I am? I think the phrase that will stick with me from this experience is “in these unprecedented times”. Other than that, it hasn’t been too bad. Our biggest issue has been the isolation from the kids and grandkids and that is because we are lucky to have all our kids still local. One good thing to come out of it is that I have regained some of my personal space that has been diminishing as society attitudes and population densities have changed.

Continuing the saga of updating everyone’s email address. On Friday night after the Executive Meeting, you should have received an email notifying that the bar was to be open on Saturday night. That was a good step for our club. Did you not receive the email? I know of only three emails that couldn’t be delivered because those email addresses no longer exist. I am endeavouring to make contact to correct those. Please remember to advise the secretary of your change of address, phone number or email address when any one of them changes. It has been reported that at one stage on Saturday night there were 32 people present at the Club Rooms. That is better than half the normal attendance on a meeting night. The ability to be able to contact members for any reason was highlighted by the lock-down. My big problem in that respect is that a number of you (I have no idea how many) ticked a box on you membership application form to the effect that your information was not to be used for other than administrative purposes. That has been interpreted, rightly or wrongly, as ‘it has to be kept secret and only the secretary shall have the right to use it’. So, if you didn’t receive the notice about the bar being open, it is probably because you are on that list. Please contact the secretary if you wish to review that situation. If your real need for discretion (after all your address and phone number are mostly available through directory services) is because of the list of vehicles you provided and your concern for their safety, then maybe you could request that all of those be removed from your record and then you could request release from the ‘confidential’ list. There are other times that we contact as many as we can about things. For example: 1. Alwyn Hoskins Car Guard of Honour intentions and arrangements were circulated by email at the start of lock-down. 2. The best way for us to make contact ‘en masse’ was by email during the lock-down because envelopes etc were stored at the club rooms. I expect that email messages will be used more and more. 3. Any communication that has a short lead time. If you still want to be incognito but wish to receive these communications, then please advise me with your membership number, name, phone number and email address as a minimum. That is the minimum information I need for my system to work. SVCC Rumour

It is interesting that about 28% of our membership do not have a computer and some of those who have one, don’t have a printer. I am not criticising here. I understand and have empathy for your position. Many times I want to read things in printed form and my preferred option is the printed version of the Rumour. There is no reason why you cannot receive both. Just make sure the Secretary and I know please. Janet and I have become good at sharing that information lately. That is more than I wanted to write on that subject but this is the only way I can communicate with most of you, because so few of our total membership attend meetings. Maybe that is a subject for another month. Next month is our AGM. Don’t be one of those who stays away for fear of getting a job. Do some work to make sure enough people are nominated to fill all positions so there won’t be a need to call for nominations from the floor. Preferably we will have more nominations than positions available. Then there will actually be a need for an election. See the list of positions later in the Rumour. The Executive has decided that in future the Rumour is to be distributed to everyone whose email address we have. Because the Rumour serves as our notice of meeting, it is important that we get it to as many members as we can before the meeting night and the postal service (particularly rural delivery) has so many delays these days and it will probably get worse. Emailing will also serve as a monitor on active email addresses so we can follow up on any changes we can identify. Just to reiterate; please advise the secretary of any changes to your contact details (address, phone number or email address). Please do not see this as an attempt to stop posting printed versions. Some people currently receive both and are perfectly entitled to do that. There is no intention to rescind that right.

What communications did you expect from the club during lock-down? We can expect a recurrence of the lockdown in the future but just when is anyone’s guess. It could be a second wave of covid19 (that is quite likely) or some other variant or indeed a new virus altogether. What do we need to put in place now to be able to meet the needs/expectations of members? Should we have a facebook presence? How do we communicate with those who don’t have a computer? Are email and the website sufficient? Please bring your comments to the meeting and let the Executive know how you feel about this. I hope to see you at the June meeting Rae

From Barry Barnes: Alan Sutton has kindly updated me with more information following publication of the Bentley/RR article. The 1922 Silver Ghost is now in the ownership of Sir Julian Smith in Dunedin, the Robbie 4.5 litre Bentley is believed to be still in the Ferrymead Transport Museum and is owned by Ted Lucas of Lucas tyres (USA). Alan's 3 litre Bentley was purchased by him from the Seccombe Family in Auckland, who had 3 vintage Bentleys at the time. Prior to that it had been owned by Rex Frisken in Christchurch. Alan says it was an effortlessly quick road car and Willis Brown showed Alan how to change gear properly, always an art with vintage Bentleys, and gave him great guidance as to how to get the best out of driving it. It was fitted with the rare 100mph horseshoe shaped radiator of which Bentley only ever made 18. The car is now owned by Wellingtonian, Stephen Kosch. Alan also later owned the ex Emslie 4.5 litre tourer he bought from Alexandra butcher Eric O'Hara. It has since gone to Australia with a new owner. With regard to the Pat Fox Bentley; I think this was the ex Willis Brown 20/25 car, Perhaps someone can confirm this. Ed: I had a call from Robert Grant with the following information. This photo from the top of page 9 in the May Rumour was taken in early 1963. The car on the right was purchased by Ken McMillan in 1962 with SVCC Rumour

80,000 miles on it and has a Gurney Nutting body. It was later repainted black. The left hand one belonged to Pat Fox and was previously owned by Willis Brown. It is a 20/25 HP Rolls with a Mann, Egerton body. Pat later sold it to someone in Canterbury who later sold it, regretted selling it and bought it back again but it has since been sold again to someone at the top of the South Island. Jack McEwan’s 25/30 HP model with a Rippon body is not shown in the article but now resides in Wellington. Pickney’s Silver Ghost now belongs to a Knight of the Realm in Dunedin. It was number 4 of 64 sold and is believed to be in America now. It was originally blue and belonged to the Lord Mayor of London. Russell’s Ramblings The book written by Alan Meredith called Pioneer Motoring in Southland, can now be obtained from Wayne Nicoll at $40 each. Wayne will have them at the June meeting. Please bring the exact change to make your purchase. It is an excellent read. When I was finding information about the Wairakiki Hill Climb run by the Southland Sports Car Club behind Wyndham, I was directed to Bob Dunstan who had competed in the 1950’s in a Cooper-Norton. The motor blew so he fitted an Austin A35 motor. After a succession of owners it went to Dunedin and performed well with a Vincent engine. The car finished up in Canada at a very good price. Bob still has his Volkswagon Special racing car. From the English Motorcycle Magazine of September 1930: We hear from the Antipodes city of Invercargill that the Southland Motorcycle Club has a membership of over 200 and has branches in Gore and Lumsden. An advantage of being in the organisation is a discount of 2d a gallon on first grade petrol in Invercargill, a discount on insurance as well as a concession on 300 hotels in the North and South Islands and the club is in an enviable position financially. English Clubs please copy or at least try anyway. 300 hotels – Boy! What a pub crawl. It is also noted that only the Pioneer Motorcycle Club in Christchurch is bigger. The propaganda seems to have died down now in respect to the electric cars. I wonder at the expense of these vehicles with less components. Surely they should be cheaper than their “dirty” petrol relatives. How long do the batteries last and who pays to get rid of the old ones? When you run out of power, you won’t be able to get a tin of electricity from a friendly farmer. There is a growing interest in restoring or building replica hill climb or street racing bikes. Harleys and Indians are a couple I have heard of. We hope no DIMs (dismount in motion) will occur. Wayne Calderwood has rebuilt the motor in his tidy 1928 Ford Tudor and the car is now for sale. This sounds like a rather onerous task and can only be improved if a number of you volunteer, reducing the number of magazines processed by each person. The History of the mid-week rallies. We were doing a bit of thinking over the lockdown and thought that you might be interested in how the runs started, so here is a brief account of the beginnings of the runs. The Mid week runs were the brainchild of the late Arthur Kent who worked Saturdays and couldn’t go on rally’s. He asked at a meeting if anyone was interested in having a run during the week and some of us put up our hands and that was the beginning On the second of September 2002 the first run was held. About 6 cars and 10 people turned up for a picnic run. We left the old Makarewa store and following the leader we made our way out to Taringatura for our lunch. Misty rain started to fall just as we finished so Arthur took us for a drive around and we finally ended up at Shona and Ian Ridd’s. For a start we only had picnic runs so we only had summer runs. Some of us Ladies then decided we should get our husbands to take us out for lunch and that is how we started having lunches at a hotel etc. If the organiser of the run knew of any interesting to see they would arrange for us to visit. Over the years the numbers have fluctuated and now there is usually between 45 & 60 on most of the runs. We have been to see some very interesting things and have had a lot of good times motoring in our vintage cars. We have seen some really nice scenery and have had some beautiful meals and some not so good. On the whole it is great catching up with folk we only see once a month. Some of the early members have sadly fallen by the wayside but new ones are turning up so things are still going strongly. Long may it continue to do so. We have enjoyed our years of going on these runs Louisa and Allan. Thank you. It is important to remember/know where and why. The only drawback is that it is limited to those who can have time out on Wednesdays. Ed.

Tesco meals? Within hours of the news that Tesco's 'all beef hamburgers' contained 30% horse meat, the following quips hit the Internet: I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse. I guess Tesco just listened. Anyone want a burger from Tesco? Yay or neigh? Not entirely sure how Tesco is going to get over this hurdle. Had some burgers from Tesco for supper last night. I still have a bit between my teeth. A woman has been taken into hospital after eating horse meat burgers from Tesco. Her condition is listed as stable. Tesco are now testing all their vegetarian burgers for traces of unicorn. "I've just checked the Tesco burgers in my freezer ... "AND THEY'RE OFF!" Tesco is now forced to deny the presence of zebra in burgers, as shoppers confuse barcodes for serving suggestions. I said to my spouse, "These Tesco burgers are giving me the trots... "To beef or not to beef, that is equestrian"..... A cow walks into a bar. Barman says, "Why the long face? Cow says "Illegal ingredients are coming over here stealing our jobs." I hear the smaller version of those Tesco burgers make great horse d'oeuvres. Since they're selling the meat wrapped in plastic, is that technically a "Trojan Horse?" Instead of choosing "rare, medium or well done, it's now Win, Place or Show." At first, I thought, "Oh great, I've been saddled with another email to forward," but something spurred me on.
