Editor’s comments I was sceptical about not producing a December Bulletin but as it turned out I was very relieved to not have to do it. For some reason the run up to Christmas does not seem to get any less of a panic as I get older. Even with the break I am pushing the boundaries again to get this one out on time. I know there will a number of you coming to help with the working bee on 12 February (this isn’t just wishful thinking). The object is to clear up behind the parts shed. It is probably a part of the property that many of you have not seen before. Do yourselves a favour and bring gloves and protective head gear and loppers for trimming branches please. At the February meeting we will again be addressing the horny topic of club rebranding. We had some initial discussion back about September and the time has come to give our Branch rep the message that is to be conveyed to the National Executive. Please discuss this amongst yourselves and come prepared to contribute your view and maybe put a motion for adoption.

From the Chair Welcome to a new decade of vintage motoring. Lets have as much fun as we did last decade. The Club’s first event for the year will be the Southland Rally, which as I was writing this there were approx. only 30 entries. Hopefully this has increased immensely since as it’s a lot of work for the organising committee. March will see our Veteran Rally being held. This is a chance to give your veterans some air prior to the National Veteran Rally in Gore mid October. This will give us 5/6 months to polish the brasswork, also check for oil leaks. We have received a copy of the DVD from the 2019 National Veteran Rally. This makes for interesting viewing. Further to my last report there will be a working bee on 12th Feb at 6:30pm to start clearing up behind the parts shed. We have the offer of a wood chipper which will help with tidying up the branches, etc. All welcome to come and help. A reminder to those 6 members who as yet haven’t paid their subs. You have until the end of March, otherwise if not paid, your membership will lapse. We want you to avoid that. At the January meeting we will be presenting some members with their 25 and 35 yr badges. All the recipients have received an invite to the meeting so it will be good to see you there. Thanks to Bob McBurney who has made an Honours Board for us. Along with the other one, these will be printed up listing all the Club Captains and Treasurers who have served our branch. We are awaiting another one to list the 50/60yr badge recipients. Congratulations to Winston Saxton who had his Anglia featured in a recent Classic Car magazine. Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock or do you just stay away and criticise and knock? Do you always go and visit a member who is sick or leave the work to just a few and talk about the “clique�? Do you often come to the meetings and help with hand and heart. Do not be just a member but take an active part. Then think this over friend, for you know right from wrong. Are you an active member, or do you just belong? About belonging Someone said the membership of every organisation is made up of four kinds of bones. The wishbones, who spend all their time wishing someone else would do the work. The jawbones, who do all the talking and very little else. The knuckle bones, who knock everything anyone else tries to do. The backbones, who get under the load and do the work. Profile This month we feature the husband-and-wife team, Sheryn and Tony Warren. Sheryn is our Branch Treasurer and Tony is our Club Captain. These two have been very active in our branch for many years, serving in a number of different roles. Sheryn has been treasurer for five years now and created and maintains our branch website. She is currently leading the development of a computerised system for running our rallies. For a number of years she managed the catering for our various functions. We really need someone new to fill this role. Sheryn has a background in the insurance industry and has worked for ACC. She is currently Office Manager for the Insurance Brokers Alliance. She is a life member of the Brigadier’s Netball Club and is still an active team member and plays in the Masters netball series. Tony and Sheryn are the second generation of a three generation family in our club. They have two sons, both of whom are married, and one grandchild of 10 months. No doubt Sheryn’s past experiences with the Parent Centre and Play Centre organisations will be well utilised with their grandchildren. Tony is our current Club Captain. He has also served as our Branch Chairperson and Social Convener and is the current Custodian of the Darracq. He is also the holder of a bar license and regularly takes his turn on the bar roster. Tony is an avid motorcyclist and between them they co-own a 1947 BSA C11, 1946 Royal Enfield, 1962 BSA Rocket Gold Star (waiting for attention) and a 1928 BSA. He is working on a 1912 Vulcan which used to belong to Neil McMillan. He speaks very passionately about riding a 1910 Humber and does not rate his 19 year 11 Singer very highly by comparison. He is enjoying driving his father’s Buick and likes driving the Darracq. He is a Fitter Welder by trade, serving his apprenticeship at J Johnson. He has worked at Alliance, Wilson Brothers, E-type Engineering, the Rayoner Fibreboard Plant and is currently employed at Tiwai on dayshift in the Carbon Maintenance team. SVCC Rumour

Rally reports December Mid-week Rally Report I don’t know why it is, but all the mid-week rallies I have attended have been very successful. That was the case again in December, thanks to Malcolm’s and Tom’s organisation. The forecast was not fantastic, so it was not a surprise that we left home in the sunshine and by the time we left the racecourse the sky was getting very black to the west. A look at the last few instructions on the rally sheet showed us going to Otautau. Hooray!! Right in the middle of the black patch. So things could only get better. And they did. We headed north rather than west and worked our way through Hedgehope, Browns, Limehills and Centre Bush before turning west onto the Hundred Line and finishing up in Otautau. This circuitous route took us round the patch of bad weather and we arrived in Otautau in sunshine. We were almost last to arrive (as usual) and the line-up of SVCC cars in the pub car park was quite impressive. Twenty four cars and fifty five people kept the Pub resources very busy. The meal was good and the Christmas cake finished the event off very nicely. In fact the meal and the friendship was so good that very few of us saw the heavy rain while we were there, and it was clear again by the time we headed home. Thanks for the efforts of all those involved.
January Mid-week Rally Report Happy new year to all. About 11 cars turned up for this run and we struck a day that was nice. The run took us to Kennington, Rimu, Morton Mains, Edendale, Wyndham and then on to look at the Glenham Historic Railway Tunnel. It was opened in 1887 and was part of the Wyndham Glenham Rail Line. Sadly 3 men lost their lives during the building of it, and it was then closed in 1930. Thank you Macolm and Noeline for a great run and day. ******** I like long walks, specially when they are taken by people who annoy me. If you are going to try cross-country ski-ing, choose a small country. It is well documented that for every minute you exercise you add one minute to your life. This enables you at age 85, to spend an additional five months in the nursing home at a cost of $5000 per month. ********

Russell’s Ramblings Motorcycle Mecca will display The George Begg collection of competition cars during the Burt Munroe Festival. 13 February is the official opening date of this display. A lot of work has been involved in obtaining and documenting these vehicles. Later in the year a collection of Japanese motorcycles will be displayed. It is interesting that the 1919 Stanley Steamer that had lived at Dixon’s in Mataura is now up and running with the Dixon grandson in charge. Good motoring to Southland Competitors in the Dunedin - Brighton Annual Veteran Rally. I understand Wayne and the Cadillac had problems with wooden wheel spokes loosening. I suspect as a result of cornering too fast over accelerating or hot weather. Veteran vehicle owners should be making plans now to attend the National veteran Rally in Gore in October this year. Expat Alan Meredith has had the fortitude to produce his book called “Pioneer Motoring in Southland”. It starts with a 1902 Argyle and going through to 1914 autos and commercial vehicles. Competition was keen between importers with trials and two races from Dunedin. French de Dion cars seemed very popular with American cars coming through in 1914. Alan has written an excellent book which gives tribute to early motorists who had problems with roads, tyres, fuel and mechanical repairs. This limited edition book is well worth purchasing. Vehicle Review 1938 Zundapp K800 & Sidecar Colour: Grey Cubic Capacity: 800cc Engine Number: 172188 Frame Number: 172188 Country: Germany Cylinders: 4 ZĂźndapp was founded during the First World War to manufacture detonators and produced its first motorcycle in 1921 using Levis twostroke engines of 211cc and 246cc capacity. In 1924, the company began manufacturing its own engines and sold more than 10,000 motorcycles that year. The first ZĂźndapp four-stroke was produced in 1930 using a Rudge Python engine and by 1933 the company had manufactured 100,000 motorcycles. That year, it introduced its first horizontally-opposed, twin-cylinder, side-valve, four-stroke engines for the K-series motorcycles, the 'K' standing for 'Kardanantrieb', which means 'enclosed driveshaft'. The 1933 K models were the twin-cylinder K400 (398cc) and K500 (498cc), and the four-cylinder K600 (598cc) and K800 (804cc). The four-cylinder K800 produced 20hp (later 22hp) at 4,300rpm. The four-speed, hand-change, unit-construction gearbox is of an unconventional, all-chain design with a separate chain for each ratio. The sturdy frame and single-spring girder forks are fabricated from pressed steel. Its top speed is around 115kph (71mph). Many K800s, usually with a factory-supplied sidecar, were used by the German military during the Second World War. This 1938 example complete with its original sidecar was purchased for the NZ Classic Motorcycles collection from a private vendor in Atlanta, Georgia, in April, 2008. It was acquired by Transport World for their Classic Motorcycle Mecca collection in May 2016. Motorcycles like this one were used by the German army during WWII and while we do not have the history of the bike to verify its ownership there is a strong possibility that it did see service in WWII. This was borrowed prior to 2000 and is currently required for a restoration project. Please check your personal collection and return this item if you have it. Assistants needed: Roy needs some assistants to catalogue and or computerise 400 post-war motorcycling magazines and over 1000 prewar motorcycling magazines. Contact Roy if you can assist. This sounds like a rather onerous task and can only be improved if a number of you volunteer, reducing the number of magazines processed by each person. Book Review Pioneer Motoring in Southland by Alan Meredith. Published 2019. This newly published veteran motoring book offers an enlightening account of early motoring in Southland covering the period from 1902 to 1914. The book runs to 88 pages and is profusely illustrated with over 120 high quality period illustrations the majority of which have not been previously published. The extensively researched subject matter comprehensively covers the first motorists, motor vehicles, motor garages, industry personalities and motoring events in Southland. Most importantly we now have a permanent record of our early motoring history which could otherwise have easily been lost for all time. This is a new book and is available from the library or to purchase from Wayne Nichol.
Targa Time Trial.
The Targa 2019 VCC Time Trial was a great success, with several new and younger members joining the VCC to participate. The interest from the general public in our older cars along with a growing awareness of VCC members having fun in old cars was most encouraging. SVCC Rumour
