Editor’s comments It seems to have been a short month being only 2 weeks since our last meeting. We have had a busy time on both the club and district-wide scenes. District-wide of course we have had the State of Emergency as a result of the flooding. There will be a number of VCC members affected in many ways by this event and our sympathies go out to those affected, including those in the Gore Club. Do ask for help guys. We are not clairvoyant and don’t know who needs what support. Unfortunately it also affected the success of our Mid-Week Rally. On the Club scene we have had the Southland Rally and the after function. I think everyone had an enjoyable day except the motorcyclists on the return journey in the wind. We have had a working bee and many of you will not see the results as most of us don’t frequent the area behind the parts shed. Then we had the presentation of the 25 and 35 year membership badges. That made for a good end to the January meeting. On the health front we have 3 members who need our support. Those are Louisa Black, Bill Skeggs and Alwyn Hoskins.

From the Chair On opening my report this month it’s with sad news that I mention the passing of one of our founding members of the Branch – Tom McDonald. Well, another month of motoring in the South has passed. Firstly we held our annual Southland Rally. While the numbers were very low those who attended had a great time. Thanks to Tony Warren and his team for organising this event. Also thanks must go to Trevor & Norma Wilkey for volunteering to cater for our evening meal. Our next event is the Veteran Rally, so those with veteran vehicles please don’t leave it till the last minute to get your entry forms in. At the beginning of the month we once again celebrated the achievements of Burt Munro. While the weather was iffy, it appeared that more people attended this event than in previous years. Some of our members participating were Hamish Allen, Stephen and Francie Winteringham and Russell Keen. Over this weekend I had a visit from a Welshman. He was over for the weekend and also belongs to the BSA Bantam Owner’s Club. He bought over some interesting items for me and it was great catching up with another motorcyclist. One of the items he bought over for me was a BSA spanner to aid the removal of crankshaft and clutch nuts. I have looked into getting some of these cut. If anyone is interested, please contact me. Then on the 13th the opening of the George Begg exhibition was held with the inaugural George Begg Speed Feast held the following weekend. Many of our club members either helped with the organisation or participated in this event. It’s also an interesting fact that some of our members assisted with the production of these vehicles. Once again making this another successful Southland event. On 12th Feb we held a working bee. In all, 12 members turned up. Interestingly only 2 of those members were not on the Executive. We got all the excess branches out from behind the parts shed and these will be chipped by Donald Bradley and put around the verge of the new carpark. There will be another working bee held later on. Well, I’m off to attend the Gore Rally on 22nd and then we’re carrying on to Wanaka for a family break. Oh, by the way, did you know that our Branch is now a pensioner? I guess we’ll have to apply for a gold card!!!!! See you at the Veteran Rally.

Profile Gerry Pethick. Gerry is a quietly spoken unassuming guy who has been involved in Club affairs for many years. He has served on the Grounds Committee, the Rally Committee, the Social Committee, the Executive, and is our Immediate Past Chairman. Educated at Gore High, he left school and moved to Invercargill to take up an apprenticeship as an Electrical Fitter with the Southland Electric Power Supply. He has spent almost all of his working life in the Electrical Supply Industry working through many changes of business name, and obviously enjoyed that type of work. He is married to Margaret (and to an extent the Operatic Society) and they have 2 boys and 2 Grandchildren. Among his interests he lists boating, fishing and campervan touring. He and Margaret have travelled the length of the country in their campervan. Their 1957 Humber 80 is frequently seen on the midweek Rallies. This car has been rallied as far as Ashburton and its first outing was the Vero Rally in Dunedin in 2017. Also in the stable are; a 1953 Aerial Red Hunter. This was last seen in the Waimea Valley Rally. It also has the honour of featuring on stage in the Operatic Society’s production of Grease some years ago. A 1929 Douglas. A Puch moped. The bones of a 1924 Overland waiting for some serious attention. His best experience in a vintage car was a 2 to 3 week trip to a Nelson Rally a number of years ago in and Essex Super 6. We look forward to many more years of Gerry’s participation in club activities.

Rally reports February Mid-week Rally Report Sorry! This was a bit of a wash-out. ********
Southland Rally – 1/2/2020 Jean booked Raewyn and myself in to drive her Wolsley 1964 6/60 in the rally. She had the car all polished and lunch packed along with table and chairs, reminding us that we needed to be there before 10.00. On arriving at the clubrooms in Otatara we all got a briefing on the day, and the times we had to leave, meaning not everyone could leave at once. A good number of members turned up for the run in many different types of vehicles and ages. The day wasn’t at all too bad. The wind arrived mid-afternoon. The time trial was going to start towards the end of the run so we didn’t have to worry about that until we were well on. We set off, me in the driver seat and Jean navigating, heading out of the clubrooms towards Dolamore Park, Gore via Kennington, Hedgehope and Waimumu. Even when a sign goes missing, everyone manages to arrive at the destination for lunch and the field test, which was something new for us. We started our time trial at Millars Road. Jean had nominated 50 miles an hour which was far too fast so we will know better next time. Good job we had a little detour in to Charlton Road along with many others. There were three sections to complete in the field tests. 1) Throwing horseshoes from out of your car window onto a peg. 2) Putting golf balls into spouting pipe and catching them in a tin at the other end while all the time your car is moving along. 3) Place your front and back axles on a rope in a > shape on the ground. Also knowing the size and make off your tires. This challenge we completed with top marks. About 2 oclock we headed back to town along the given route to the Club Rooms, where we had lovely meal of coldmeat and salads and a dessert. Following the meal there was the prize giving, which ended up quite profitable for us. First in the 60 class field test. Overall winner post 60 class First overall in the rally. Russell’s Ramblings A film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst called “The Power of the Dog”(sounds like somebody describing a beast of a vehicle) is being filmed in Central Otago. Gore club members will be driving a 1916 Chevrolet and 1917 in 1920 Ford Model T’s (cameo parts only). Sounds like fun. Alan Meredith’s book “Pioneer Motoring in Southland” has been purchased by quite a few members. Wayne Nicoll has these books for sale. Contact him if you are interested in purchasing one. It is interesting that one of the Darracq chassis that the club retrieved from Lumsden, was from a service car that was originally a racing car that came to New Zealand from Australia. The bonnet of the car had painted on it that it gave “fast service”. A number of Begg racing cars from the basement of the Motor Cycle Mecca were on display at Teretonga during the speed fest weekend. It is amazing the number of these cars under one roof and a testament to the skills of all those involved in their manufacture. The late Neil McMillan recorded the finding and restoration of his 1921 ABC motorcycle during the 1960s. He tells of making many of the parts on his nearly 100 year old lathe, making barrels, improving the oil system et cetera this manuscript is in the Club Library and is very interesting.

This month’s meeting There are two things of note this month: 1. As intimated in last month’s Rumour we will again be addressing the horny topic of club rebranding. We had some initial discussion back about September and the time has come to give our Branch Rep the message that is to be conveyed to the National Executive. Please discuss this amongst yourselves and come prepared to contribute your view and maybe put a motion for adoption. This is important as it affects us all and I keep asking myself 3 things. a. Is there an identified problem? b. Will it fix the problem? c. Is it financially worth it? 2. Stuart Francis has prepared a lighthearted motoring quiz for us. The quiz will be slightly different to previous quizzes, with two rounds; a. motoring people and b. naming the car. There will also be just for fun QI questions in the break between the two rounds. Teams of 2 or 3 people would be ideal. Most of the questions are fairly simple with a couple of ticklish ones to sort out the winners (Stuart has been known to give out occasional hints to level the playing field). Come along and have a laugh or two. Bring your brains, not your cell phones. The penalties for using a cell phone to search for the answers will incur more penalty points than you can negate by answering all the questions correctly. SVCC Rumour

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor. I read with interest your Club magazines. As an 'Aussie' enthusiast I find so much interest when cars that I have owned show up. Some 14 to date. Only a couple that would be of interest or value now. One, a 1971 BMW 2800. I owned and drove it for 36 years and 320,000 miles. The other, a 1938 BSA Scout. I am wondering if any of your members have or know of such a "beast" in NZ. I can't find any here in Australia. Thanks for the time and effort you put into keeping us up to date and entertained. Working bee. We had a very successful evening clearing behind the Parts shed and round the car park. There is now a heap of tree trimmings to be mulched in the near future. Ray has those arrangements under control.

Mayoral Relief Fund applications This is an official message from Emergency Management Southland. A total of 12 applications for emergency support from the Southland Mayoral Relief Fund have been received as of 1000hrs, Tuesday 18 February, and these are being considered. The Southland Mayoral Relief Fund is open and available to help Southlanders impacted by the floods. If a Southland resident, business or organisation has been impacted by the floods, and can't get support anywhere else, they are able to apply. The fund provides assistance on a one-off basis for extraordinary circumstances, where real need can be shown. Wanted 1. Wanted for a 1926 Buick Standard Tourer Model 25, a pair of rear doors and guards. No problem with some panel work and rust repairs. They have a double swage on the doors, one small one at the top, another bigger swage approx 30mm down from the top. Door handle hole approx 150mm down from top. Door size is 585mm wide x 510 high. 2020 Veteran Rally This will be departing from the Windsor St Church car park on 7 March at 10:30. Some vehicles may have to park on George Street. The Entry Form was in the January Rumour. Please get those entries in and start preparing your veterans for this annual rally. The destination will again be Riverton. There has been some debate as to whether the destination for this rally should be exclusively Riverton. There is some doubt about whether the debate has been initiated by Veteran Vehicle owners (we have to be careful whether we are talking about the vehicles or their owners these days when referring to veterans). There is to be a poll taken of competitors this year to gauge the opinion of the rally participants.

This was borrowed prior to 2000 and is currently required for a restoration project. Please check your personal collection and return this item if you have it. Assistants needed: Roy still needs some assistants to catalogue and or computerise 400 post-war motorcycling magazines and over 1000 prewar motorcycling magazines. Contact Roy if you can assist. This sounds like a rather onerous task and can only be improved if a number of you volunteer, reducing the number of magazines processed by each person. Race4Life event. We have been approached by the Race4Life Trust to see if any of our members would be willing to help with this year’s event. Last year 25 patients and about 150 helpers and volunteers attended the day at Teretonga. It is envisaged the event will be about that size again this year. If you are interested you would need to be at Teretonga on Tuesday March 3rd by 9am for a drivers meeting. At the end of the day you will leave with a beer and a pizza in hand! Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
