From the Chair Hi Folks Well, as we go to print our COVID levels have changed once again so please take care of yourselves. Thank you to those who attended both the Southland and Combined rallies recently held. The weather was brilliant and apart from 3 break downs on Saturday everything seemed to run smoothly. Our visitors from the far north were immensely impressed with our scenery and are hoping to come back south once again. We have been asked to help with a couple of events coming up. They are Drive a Dream on 28th February, in which we help with the transporting of public from one event to another, then on 2nd March Race 4 Life is being held. This event is for the terminally ill folk of Southland where they get a chance to have a ride in varies vehicles, etc. It’s a wonderful feeling giving someone who is terminally ill that small time of pleasure. If you are able to help with any of these please contact the Secretary on 03 217 9667. Your help will be much appreciated and it’s also good PR for our Club. It has been decided by the Executive to give the Parts Shed a big tidy up prior to our Garage Sale, so for the next few Thursday afternoons, if you are free and would like to give a hand this would be appreciated. Our Garage Sale/Open Day has been deferred from the 14th March to the 28th March to allow for this to happen. Also on the 28th we would like to have a display of vehicles. If you are able to help here please contact Gerry Pethick 03 216 5496. As mentioned at our last meeting we have received the defibrillator and it is being set up in our Clubrooms. Southland Rally 2021 report. – 6th February On a cloudy but warm Saturday morning approx. 50 vehicles lined up in various positions at the Clubrooms awaiting briefing before starting off. On leaving the Clubrooms those who were competitive completed the time section. Once this was over we could travel at our own speed. Unfortunately, not long after the time section ended, we had our first casualty. A Model A developed fuel problems so the car was towed back to the Kennington Hall car park and they continued on their way in a borrowed car. A bit further down the road and no 2 casualty occurred. This time a motorbike and it too had developed fuel problems. It was safely loaded onto the backup trailer to continue its run of the course. By this time the clouds were clearing and it was becoming quite sunny and hot. We all eventually made it to the lunch stop at the Waikawa Hall. While we were consuming our lunch, the bucket was taken around for donations towards the use of the hall. In all, approx. $50-60 was raised. Once lunch break was over, we embarked on the field tests. There were 3 field tests in all, testing our skills in various ways. Once these were completed, we left travelling either back to the Clubrooms via the Southern Scenic Route or a more direct one. Unfortunately, on the way back to town no 3 casualty happened, this also being a fuel problem. It must have been the day for fuel whoops. We all gathered at the Clubrooms later that afternoon for a meal and Prizegiving. All In all, a grand day and since then we have had a couple of emails from those who ventured out for the first time what a brilliant day, scenery was great and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Combined Rally 2021 report On a glorious sunny Sunday 7th Feb the briefing was held and 27 cars got themselves ready for take-off. Prior to leaving the Clubrooms we were all asked 6 questions. Once these were answered we headed off in our own time following the instructions given towards Tuatapere. Along the way we were given various scenic spots we could stop and have a look at. These included Howell’s Point, Monkey Island, Cosy Nook, Curio Bay and Gemstone Beach. On arriving in Tuatapere we headed in different directions to obtain/eat our lunches. hit the road heading back across to Winton with a stop along the way at Leslie & Flora Andrews. Here the men all hightailed it to the sheds to check out the wide range of machinery, tools, etc while the women headed indoors to see Flora’s brilliant range of lacework. We would like to thank them very much for allowing us to visit and also for providing a cuppa of our choice. After this we headed back to the Clubrooms where we had a lovely roast meal and a natter about the events of the day. After tea we were then given a presentation by our visitors, Fred & Elisabeth Smits from Wellington, of their journeys travelling around the world in their 1957 Mercedes Benz which was originally sold in Invercargill. After the presentation Ashley Bell inquired as to who were the owners and on checking we found that one of the owners was a past member, Charley Milne. All in all, a great day with no causalities and the feedback from members has been brilliant. Editor’s comments. This is a great time of the year for activities. Those of us who have many interests are very busy attending and participating in various activities. Sometimes you just cannot do everything. And then there are Grandkids to satisfy as well. And now we have level 2 COVID lockdown to deal with. Depending on what develops as the week progresses, we may have to deal with social distancing and face masks at the meeting next week, and I will try to remember to wear my name badge this month. Just remember not to be macho and consider other people’s needs. Follow the rules; give each other space, wash your hands frequently, use the COVID app and/or sign in when you enter the club rooms. By my calculations it is only 3 months till our AGM. I urge you to not leave it till the last minute to consider who you want on all of the club committees and the Executive. I have stated before that I will finish my term as Bulletin Editor this year, so we need a new editor. Please consider giving it a go yourself. I have enjoyed the experience and all the help I have received. I certainly know more members now than I did before. Thanks for all the encouragement folks. Rae Wilson. If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff? Why do stores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?
Authenticity Statement and VIC Applications From time to time the Club Authentication Committee makes changes to the forms used for making these applications. The most recent one is hidden at the top of page 6. Yes, that's right, the page you look at and decide it’s for the Signatory and the Head Office only. Well, the top two paragraphs tell you a bit of stuff you should know including, in the last sentence next to the big 3, the new requirement to supply photos of all identifying Serial Numbers. ie Chassis/ Frame , Engine, Body and Vin. Unlike the 3 identical pictures of the vehicle these serial number pics can be on any old paper and all on one page. Ferg ********* I never use my indicators. There is a fair bit of gravel, but the roads are currently good, and the areas travelled through are well worth washing the car when you get home. February Mid-Week Run report. We left the Racecourse and, as has become customary, headed out Findlay Road using back roads to make our way to the West Gore area traveling on a very pleasant and leisurely route to arrive at the Gore Town & Country Club where we had a choice of three lovely meals. Thank you, Viv and Barry, for a very pleasant run.

Ladies Run After a hiatus for several years, Sunday January 24 saw the scheduled reinstated Ladies Run held. A small group of club members and friends left for a tour of the Seriously Good Chocolate Company who were kind enough to have staff members Heather and Gin give up part of their afternoon to show us what is behind the shop door. Heather and Gin had been on deck long before we arrived to bring a vat of chocolate to temperature, so we were able to see a snapshot of the time it takes to make chocolates we could purchase for consuming. With the company making handmade gourmet chocolates that use locally sourced ingredients such as blueberries, raspberries, Pinot noir and Speights (infused chocolates) and the company selling both nationally and internationally, it was interesting and fun. Maybe the samples given out sweetened the deal. Nichols Garden Centre was the next stop. With a number of very experienced gardeners on the run this was almost the equivalent of a shed tour. A talk by Karl from Nichols showing latest plant releases and new ideas worked really well. He also acknowledged a couple of products he was using had been around for a very long time, so it showed when something works well it still has a part to play. We finished off the afternoon at the Nichol’s café with the three C’s – Coffee, cake and chat. A great afternoon well done Janet. Jenny Sycamore
Parts Shed working bee In the lead-up to the club’s Open Day on 28 March, there is to be a working bee each Thursday from 10 am till 4 pm. The objective is to clean up the parts shed and make it tidy and safe for the public to view and hopefully achieve some sales. This starts on 4 March. The more helpers there are, the better and quicker the objectives will be achieved and maybe we can achieve even more.
Blow your muscles up, get your old gear on, and come and help. The parts shed guys will be pleased to see you and appreciate your help. Come and help for whatever length of time you can manage. SVCC Rumour

Website access. We have been made aware that a number of members are experiencing problems accessing the Club’s web site and more particularly submitting rally entries online. It would be very helpful if you would contact either Sheryn or me so we can understand your difficulties and perhaps help you. There are a number of issues that can be involved and we will need to get your answers to a number of questions. The main problem is with old or outdated versions of programs. The demands of modern websites also place heavy demands on old computers. If you have a Windows 7 computer, it is likely to be the route of the problem and unless you can update to Windows 10, you will need to replace your computer. It’s a process of progressive obsolescence and its frustrating when your computer seems to be otherwise ok. I have just completed my Veteran Rally entry, as a test, and it works perfectly on my up-to-date computer system so it proves nothing other than it works as it is designed to do. In my opinion, Sheryn has done a great job of our website and maintains it well. We should all be grateful to Sheryn for her commitment. It is a big job. How to determine which version of Windows your computer is using: Press the Widows Key on the keyboard (to the left of the space bar or left hand end of the taskbar) and type winver and press enter on the keyboard. You will see a window appear on screen showing your version of Windows. Make a note of it and press OK to dismiss this window. Remember to call one of us to get you on track again. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will probably just see a blank screen. In this case your system is unlikely to be able to run Google Chrome browser either. You can try downloading it and installing it, but I think you will get a message that it is incompatible with your operating system or computer. Russell’s Ramblings They are still finding them. A 1920 Harley Davidson was recently found in a chicken run. Though dismantled, it was complete, including the generator. The Dunedin-Brighton Veteran Rally was a successful event with excellent weather and roads. Southland members who had success at it were: Class 1 Sharon and Wayne Nicoll in their 1908 Cadillac overall winners. Ashley and Gwen Bell in their 1912 Renault were Best Dressed. Class 5 Casey Lyons on his Humber motorcycle. Ex-Southland Club member Neville Batt passed away recently. Mature members remember he was a Triumph motorcycle rider and also owned a post-war Chrysler Saloon. Neville had a dry wit. I remember him telling me that every time he was near the till in his shop, it giggled. The Nicol family had numerous entries in the Southland and Combined Rallies this year. The vintage Arroll Johnston was out. Wayne drove the Cadillac for over five hours and he still had his dentures. The vintage Ariel ohv is ready for restoration by his boys. 1936 Brough Superior SS80 This bike has a V-twin, side valve Matchless Model X engine. There were around 1086 produced, with only 460 fitted with the Matchless engine. This bike was brought to NZ from the UK in 2008 and restored by David Clark. The bike and sidecar were used by the Nottingham police and is now on display at Motorcycle Mecca. ********** Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons? Drive a Dream 2021 Sunday 28th February 2021 We have again been approached to support this important fundraiser. After being a victim of COVID in 2020, Rotary Club East is pushing for a huge event on the 28 February 2021. An event of this scale is not possible without the support and enthusiasm of groups such as ours. The event will again be held at Teretonga Racetrack. We are looking for volunteers to provide our club’s support for this worthy project.
