Editor’s comments We would like to see the monthly post meeting address alternate between a vehicle presentation and something of general interest. Many of you are in other organisations and may hear speakers with topics of interest to us. Please let us know of any you have heard so we can approach them. This month I have a ‘letter to the editor’. I welcome any such input to the Bulletin and will certainly publish them even if there is a need to edit or abbreviate some of them to suit. I am still trying to standardise my layout for the Rumour. I shall try to keep the mid-week rally notice with the Rallys section of the Important dates so you will always know where to find it rather than searching for the previous months rally report to find it. The rally report will appear just where it fits, and so can be in a different place each month. This will make it easier to find the next month’s closing date quickly.

From the Chair Some of our members attended the talk by Tony Hancock at the Gore Branch meeting on 13th, for a run down on the upcoming Vero Rally 2021 in New Plymouth. Sunday 25th will see the Annual Cancer Run being held. This starts at Club Southland, 115 Leet St at 1pm. Entry is $10 per vehicle with members also bringing a packet of biscuits. Thank you for your support for this event. Eight of our members will be attending the Combined Rally in Cromwell 17th 18th Aug. There are 37 entries overall. Hopefully the weather is ok. Now is a good time for the wives to clean out the shed so that hubbie can bring items along to our Auction Night on Thurs 29 th. For the intrepid motorcyclists 31st August 9:30 for 10am start at Preston St for the annual Round the Takis run. Anyone welcome for either a day trip or overnight stay. Rooms are available at the Distinction Hotel, Main St, Te Anau. Congratulations to some members who have received their gold cards, also congratulations to Casey & Anna-Lea on their wedding. Ray.
This month’s meeting The evening will start with a Membership Check. Make sure you have your membership card with you please! We still have some members who are in arrears with their membership and are at risk of losing their continuity of membership as they will have to rejoin the club and start again as a new member. Simply put; those are the rules. We don’t want that to happen to anyone. Your card should be green and have an expiry date of October 2019. If yours is different, then you need to take action immediately. We will all be getting renewal notices shortly. This month is our annual Auction Night. The Auction will commence after a short break following an even shorter meeting. Please bring saleable items and leave on the table with all the other auction items prior to the meeting SVCC Rumour

start. Get there early and peruse the items for sale before the meeting and auction start. It is always an interesting collection of items. No junk items please.
July meeting address Dale Simmons told us about the life and times of his family’s PAX Vauxhall. It was an interesting change from just quoting spec’s of the vehicle. Thanks Dale. ****** The President of the US was walking toward his limo when a possible assassin stepped forward with a gun in his hand. A secret Service agent, on his first assignment shouted “MICKEY MOUSE”. The would-be assassin was startled just long enough for the security team to capture him. Later the agent’s supervisor asked him “Why did you shout Mickey Mouse?” Blushing, the agent replied “I got a bit excited but I meant to shout ..... Donald; duck” (Now that’s a quacker.)

To the Editor I refer to the letters to the editor in the paper on 23 July 2019, referring to the burning of 10,000 engineering books as a result of libraries closing or being relocated. In a reply from the University of Auckland communications manager it is acknowledged that it is standard practice for old, damaged and out of date books to be destroyed. It is also stated that “like it or not, online or web-based is the tool of choice� (for research). If online or web-based research is now preferred, early technical information can only be searched if it has been digitised prior to being destroyed. There is no indication given that digitisation is standard practice prior to destruction. TREASURE YOUR VCC LIBRARY Roy Shanks (Librarian). ********** Hello from a fellow Canterbury VCC member. I am currently restoring a 1920 Davis Phaeton and am currently in the middle of rebuilding the engine, which was dismantled and packed away in a crate approx 50 years ago ! The same goes for the rest of the car - a big jigsaw of parts to put back together , but slowly starting to get to the running chassis stage - just the engine to complete before commencing the body work. The engine is a Continental 7R six cylinder and I am looking to see if anyone in your club has a spare parts engine in their workshop / parts shed as I am missing some parts to complete the rebuild. Vehicle Review This 1946 Ford Super Deluxe (Woody) Station Wagon on display at Transport World was purchased at the Den Hartogh collection auction in the Netherlands in June 2018. The Den Hartogh collection comprised more than 200 Ford and Lincoln cars and commercial vehicles and more than 50 motorcycles. They ranged from a 1903 Model A to a Canadian police-issue snowmobile.
This 1934 Ford V8 (4 seater) Roadster is one of only 5 cars built, being unique to the Ford Australia Production. This particular car is reputed to have been owned by the Australian actor Errol Flynn.

Russell’s Ramblings Ex Southlander, Alan Meredith, must be congratulated on a book he has written about the history of early Southland motoring. Amongst other things, the book contains details of Southland’s auto and commercial entrepreneurs with fire engines, buses, taxis etc. being featuring along with stories of motor races to Dunedin and return in Russell, Rio, De Deon and Darracq vehicles and the Lumsden to Manapouri tourist service. The Club’s 1906 Darracq service vehicle was one of the participants. It is excellent that Alan has the foresight to record these historical events when an automobile was a greater status symbol than it is today. His book will be published in the near future. On the restoration seen; Greg Eunson has purchased a vintage New Hudson project. A rare bike. Ray McCulloch is doing a major restoration on a veteran Arial with an LMC waiting in the wings. I sent T T Triumph frame to New Plymouth and found later it was off a bike that was recorded on a Brooklyn’s Test Certificate at 93.88 mph on the track.
Mid week Rally Report After the snowy weekend the numbers were down slightly for this run, with 18 cars and 39 people departing the racecourse to ultimately regroup at the Gorge Road Country Club. The weather was fine as we worked our way through Roslyn Bush, Woodlands and the rolling country in from Dacre, joining SH1 at Brydone. There was still plenty of snow patches in sheltered valleys and hillsides although the road was clear. The run continued on through Menzies Ferry and Seaward Downs to Gorge Road for a lovely roast meal. Although it was all on sealed roads several people were heard to say that they had never been on some of those roads before, so well done to Malcolm and Noeline Shaw.

The first Club Patron Mrs A. S. Russell was elected in 1955 and since then we have had Alf Walmsley, Ira McIvor, Mr A. V. Russell, Ray Lindsay and Neil McMillan. Wayne is our seventh Patron and doing a very good job of maintaining the standards of that office. Needless to say he is a great stalwart of our branch and the Vintage Car Club in general. He has been a member of this branch since 1963 (he was in his late teens then) and is consequently the holder of a 50 year Certificate of Achievement. Wayne is married to and supported by Sharyn who you will see at most car club functions. Wayne is often accompanied by one or more of his grandchildren on rallies and one of them is now regularly seen on rallies with Ashley Bell. In addition to the Vintage Car Club, Wayne is a hobby farmer and a duck shooter. He served his apprenticeship with Invercargill Engineering, and so is both a Fitter Turner and a Fitter Welder. He went on to work for George Begg at the Drummond Workshop where his two older brothers also worked, before moving to the Invercargill City Council where he was the Mechanical Overseer of maintenance of water and sewerage pumping systems. In 1961 at the age of 17, Wayne bought his first vintage car for £14. It was the Arrol Johnston that he still has today and is Sharyn’s preferred vintage vehicle in the collection. It is not so well-known that amongst his collection there is a 1901 Locomobile petrol fired steamer waiting for his TLC. The most frequently seen of Wayne’s collection is his 1908 Cadillac in which he is a very competitive entrant in Veteran rallies. It cruises very comfortably at 26 mph with a maximum of 43 mph downhill. His 1912 Triumph motorcycle is a common site in both the Arrowtown Motorcycle rally (Wayne has missed only one of these rallies) and the Waikaia Girder Forks rally. Like most of us, he has quite a collection of other vehicles and parts. Wayne is an avid believer in the rallying rules of the club and in particular that participants should abide by the rally route and speeds. He is also very critical of members not keeping as far to the left as possible and not letting faster traffic past. He believes that this will be one of our biggest hurdles to maintaining the rights of our slow vehicles to use public roads in future. SVCC Rumour

Daffodil Rally Don’t forget the Daffodil Rally on August 25. Come and help the club contribute to the Cancer Society. This rally is open to the public, so encourage some of your friends to attend as well. Entry fee is $10 per vehicle and club members please bring a packet of biscuits to contribute to the afternoon tea at the club rooms at the end of the run. Remember that there are hampers being raffled at the afternoon tea as well and club members are encouraged to contribute non-perishable items for those hampers please. The rally departs from Club Southland, 115 Leet Street at 1 PM.

Daffodil Deliveries We still need help with delivering pre-purchased bundles of daffodils principally to businesses in the city. These bundles of flowers have already been pre-purchased and need to be collected from the Cancer Society and delivered to the purchasers. You do not need to take any money as they have already been prepaid. It needs two people per vehicle, one to drive and the other to make the delivery. All up, it may involve a couple of hours and you do not need to use your vintage vehicle (in fact, your everyday car will probably be more suited). North Cape to Bluff rally The North Cape to Bluff rally will finish in Bluff on 17 October. It looks like approximately 27 people will be involved. They have requested our club to provide them with a place to gather and have a meal together on Friday, October 18. This just happens to coincide with the National Veteran Rally in Timaru that weekend. Various options are being considered and we will give you more information next month.
Round the Taki’s run - August 31 This rally is open to all VCC members riding motorbikes. Please gather at Preston St at 9:30am for 10am start. The format will be the same as in previous years.

Vintage/Post Vintage Rally
Saturday 5th October 2019 ELIGIBILITY This event is open to financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand to enter their Vintage (1919-1931) & Post Vintage (1932-1945) vehicles. EVENT Entrants will depart from the SVCC Clubrooms, Ariki Avenue, Otatara at 10:00am on Saturday 5th October 2019. All entrants are asked to be at the clubrooms by 9:30am. GENERAL The rally route will not include any gravel roads. The rally will include a break for lunch (please bring your lunch with you) followed by a leisurely afternoon run back to the clubrooms, for prize-giving between 5:00 and 6:00pm.
