From the Chair Hi Folks Well once again the hand brake has been pulled on slightly in regards to gatherings. BREAKING NEWS- we have just heard that our bid to host the 2023 National Motorcycle Rally has been successful. At the July meeting it was voted by those attending to gift $500 towards a plaque for the Southland Charity Hospital. A big thank you to those members in attendance for their support in allowing us to do this. At this stage no members have come forward to take the Darracq to the Gore National Veteran Rally. The Club is responsible for the entry costs. For all the other veteran owners please don’t leave it too late to get your entry forms in. Following this event is the Prince Henry Tour to Te Anau, entry forms for this close September 27th A reminder that this month’s club meeting is our annual Auction Night so don’t forget to bring along some goodies to sell and support your Club. NOTE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS In regards to the Round the Takis run I need to know ASAP who is coming re accommodation, meals as we all know we now have a limit on how many we can have at an event. So, if you are coming PLEASE contact me by 25th August. If I haven’t received your name by then sorry you will miss out on meals and accommodation. Editor’s comments I’m sorry I missed the AGM last month. It concerns me that we don’t have a Club Captain at this stage. This is a key role in our club, so examine your commitment to the club and consider volunteering your services. If you are not happy with the way things are, this is a good time to become involved and have an influence. One thing we should all be asking is “How do we continue to function as a club without a Club Captain?”. Rae Wilson Closing date for the September Rumour is September 13.
COVID is back. but this time it is not expected to be for long, thank goodness and shouldn’t get in the way of any of our activities. The Executive has to comply with the directives of the Government and asks you to comply also when you attend the Club Rooms. 1. Please do not use the sliding door. 2. Maintain social distancing and be prepared to use a face mask. Please supply your own. 3. The Government COVID Tracing App QR code will be on display inside the door. Please use it if you have the app on your phone. If you don’t have the app and your phone is capable of doing it, please download the app and use it. 4. Please sign the register as well. We are required to keep this register. We know it feels like big brother is watching but it is not made available to big brother until such time as there is an outbreak involving our club.

Olly Olsson’s South Island Trip 2020. 10 – 24 March. Part II Day 5 Kaikoura via Oxford. On a beautiful sunny day, we travelled on the old West Coast Road to Geoff Townsend’s Museum in Oxford where we saw a 1914 Rover motorcycle and a 1926 Harley Davidson along with a lot of memorabilia. Another room featured a sawmilling era (1854 to 1915) along with the Blacksmith’s and Farrier’s tools. Another room had a 1920 Briscoe car and a working model railway of the Oxford district. Another room had a display of old wedding gowns gathered from round the Oxford district. We dined at the Cruising Days Diner in Oxford. The diner featured the 1950s era with staff dressed to match the era and a jukebox playing 50s music. All we needed was the Fonze to appear, but he didn’t. After lunch we met up with Olly and Raewyn, stopped at Cheviot for a break and an ice cream. Then it was on to Kaikoura, negotiating the interesting and varied countryside and road conditions including multiple stops for roadworks. Day 6 Kaikoura to Blenheim. This was another nice sunny day, perfect for motoring. We suddenly realised we had left the cell phone on charge back at the motel and had to return to Kaikoura to collect it. We caught up with the rest of the crew at Seddon where we drove round the Yealands Estate vineyards. We were the leaders at the time and we managed to take some wrong roads but fortunately finished up where we were supposed to at Lookout Point, looking out over the sea. We stopped at the winery for some wine tasting and some purchases were made. We cruised on into Blenheim where we had lunch, located our accommodation and treated the car to a shower at the Super Wash. the Volvo looked so good the other cars were treated the same way. Day 7 Blenheim to Nelson. It was another beautiful sunny day but before leaving Blenheim we stopped at Renwick for the guys to visit Basis. The ladies went walkabout checking out the shops but the one we all wanted to go to (packed with packs of wool et cetera et cetera) wasn’t open until 10:30 AM. Then it was on to Nelson where we went to the ‘Retired Iron’. Inside the shed were a 1978 Ford Escort, an original 1951 Land Rover series 1, 1928 Indian big chief motorcycle, Chev truck, 1918 Dodge tourer (unrestored), 1923 Model T Gunship, 1929 model AA truck engine, 1928 Ford A SVCC Rumour

Phantom. The owner (Roger Humphries) started the Chev truck engine. There was an interesting home-made Bee E Bike constructed from basins, various scrap metal and a battery. It really looked good as it was painted like a bee. Nelson to Invercargill. We said our goodbyes to the rest of the group as they continued on their way to Takaka because David and I were staying an extra night in Nelson. The next day we travelled to Hanmer Springs and the following day to Geraldine. Friday was a wet day for us to travel to Invercargill because of the imminent COVID19 lockdown. We enjoyed the whole trip and covered 2603 km. Thanks to Olly and Raewyn for organising the trip. Father Robbie is working on his model P Triumph. There are over 700 pre 1981 motorcycles in Southland 399 of these are in The Motorcycle Mecca. Could you bring your old well read magazines or brass lamps for our Auction night this month. Bring some cash and buy them back again to donate to next year’s auction. Complete motorcycles will also be accepted. Wayne Nicoll still has some Pioneer Motoring in Southland books for sale. Message from the Parts Guys We spent last Thursday afternoon cleaning up and sorting all the tyres & rims left outside the parts shed. Of all the tyres there were only one or two that were warrantable and could be used. The rest will have to have the rims taken off and disposed of by our club. As members will know it now costs to dump them at the tip. We are happy to take your old rims but if the tyres are not warrantable please remove them from the rims and dispose of them yourself. This will save our club the cost of disposing of the old tyres. If any member has access to tyre remover equipment please contact me as we need to get the rims off to dispose of the tyres. ********** My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION. 50 Years of Johnston Formula Fords Thanks Dave for submitting this article. (Ed). Late year I had quite a bit of communication with Keith Cowan in Christchurch regarding the history of Johnston Formula Fords. Keith has the first Formula Ford that Johnny and Bob Johnstone from Christchurch built and I have a later car. During these communications Keith asked me if I would come to the Skope Classic at Ruapuna this year. I told him I would come if he could get all the other Johnstons there. He asked if they had to race and I said that they just had to be there. The Johnstons built a total of 9 Formula Ford chassis between 1970 and 1989 but one was sold as a bare chassis and another was a replacement chassis for the second car they built as it was not actually strong enough. By the time the close of entries came around Keith said he had all but one car sorted out and that he would try and get the other car from Wanaka although it would not race. He had been working hard on this and had managed to get 50 years of Johnstons as a feature for the meeting with a special parade at the start of one of the races on Saturday and two pages in the program dedicated to the Johnstons. We even had our own area set aside in the paddock. When I arrived most of the cars were there ready to go. Neither of the newest two cars were going to race but builder Bob Johnston was going to lead the Saturday parade in the last car which he owns. On the Saturday the replaced chassis from the second car also turned up and joined the display. The only thing missing was the fourth chassis that was never raced as a Johnston. The real disappointment about this is that with a little more information this car could have been there as well as it is here in Invercargill with Rick Michels at Evolution Motorsport. The race meeting itself was very busy. I hadn’t raced at Ruapuna since 1997 but the track hadn’t changed. It was still hot and dusty and the corner at the end of the straight was still a major challenge. I should be able to take it flat out but can’t. We had two test sessions and qualifying on Friday and then 3 races on each of Saturday and Sunday. Sunday was very hot, 37oC and all the cars were running hot. The only issue I had with the car (other than how much petrol I was using) was that the starter motor failed some time during the last race when the main lead from the solenoid to the starter broke due to vibration. This wasn’t a problem as I had finished my racing (and I actually SVCC Rumour

had a spare starter motor with me if it had failed earlier). It was great to get all of the Johnstons together in one place. It was just a pity I only found out the missing chassis (that was raced as a Tull) was in Invercargill while at the meeting in Christchurch but it was still a great effort to get all the cars together.

August Mid-week Rally Report. It was a nice winters morning when 42 people in 18 cars set off for the monthly outing .We went out through Kennington, and out towards Seaward Downs before turning and going though Mataura Island then turning onto Letterbox road. We then turned right onto a gravel road which wound us through a large forestry block and eventually coming out onto the Southern Scenic road and on to the Tokanui Tavern for a nice meal of roast pork and a cuppa. Fund Raising Project. We have finished up with a profit of $200 from the June midweek rally. At the August Executive meeting I proposed that the $200 be used as a seed for a fundraising account to purchase a Defibrillator for the club rooms. This comes at a cost of $3000 + gst and another $520 + gst for training. The unit proposed can be used outside so can be taken off site for various functions. The profit from the Auction Night is to go into this account this year and scratchy boards and raffles are to be available at all functions to continue the fund raising. There is always the opportunity to make donations to this account as well. Talk to our treasurer about that. After all, at 400 members, $10 each would buy the AED and then we can start fund raising for other things we need. I don’t think we need to debate the pros and cons of purchasing the AED. Let’s get on and make it happen. Rae Wilson.
PROGRAMME FOR THE 2020 VETERAN RALLY, 16th – 18th OCTOBER 2020 This is a broad overview of the events for the weekend, a more detailed schedule will be in your rally packs that you will be collecting on the Friday night. FRIDAY Enjoy a cuppa when you collect your Rally Pack from 3.00pm till 7.00pm at the Gore VCC Club Rooms, Waimea Street, Gore. A complimentary wine/beer followed with a cash bar. This will allow for a catch-up before the Rally kicks off. SATURDAY MORNING Period Costume is encouraged We are going to be meeting up by the Gore Main School, to get in numerical order and then directed to Irk Street. This street is going to be closed off so we can have the cars parked for public to view before being flagged off by our mayor, to start our short and long Saturday runs. We will SVCC Rumour

be visiting certain points of interest along the way. We will be stopping for a photo shoot in a fantastic location. For those that order lunch boxes, bring your tickets with you on the run, lunch boxes will be available at one of the points of interest. SATURDAY EVENING After the run we will be holding a BBQ at the Gore VCC Club rooms, followed by a trip to the movies. We have organised a free courtesy coach to pick you up from your accommodation to the movies and return back to your accommodation afterwards. Please remember to bring your tickets, that will be in your rally packs. SUNDAY MORNING Period Costume is encouraged Public Day being held at the Gore A&P Showgrounds. We will be running field tests and team events through the morning. Lunch boxes will be available at the Showgrounds, just make sure you have your tickets. The afternoon is yours to enjoy. SUNDAY EVENING We will be holding our final dinner and presentation event at the Heartland Hotel Croydon, which is straight across the road from the Gore VCC Club Rooms. MONDAY MORNING For those that are entering the 2020 Founders Prince Henry Tour, this is a rest day to get organised for setting off on Tuesday morning. Our club rooms will be open on Monday morning for those that may like a cuppa before setting off. Our parts shed will be open for those keen to seek out some valuable finds. Did you realise? That in 1923, Star was the first manufacturer to offer a production station wagon? That meant the wagon body was delivered to the factory and fitted to the chassis there? Other car companies would ship their chassis to a custom builder that added their own wooden wagon body. That the first successful vehicle produced by Mack was the 40hp, 20 seater, passenger bus, produced for a sightseeing concession in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, It operated from 1900 through 1908 before being converted into a truck. That the brand name of the “affordable” auto that Marmon built for 1929 and 1930 to deal with the Depression was the Roosevelt, named after President Teddy Roosevelt. It was the first straight-eight from America priced at less than $1,000. The car became the Marmon 70 in 1931.

Saturday 3 October 2020 ELIGIBILITY This event is open to financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand to enter their Vintage (1919-1931) & Post Vintage (1932-1945) vehicles. EVENT Entrants will depart from the SVCC Clubrooms, Ariki Avenue, Otatara at 10:00am on Saturday 3 October 2020. All entrants are asked to be at the clubrooms by 9:30am. GENERAL The rally route will not include any gravel roads. The rally will include a break for lunch (please bring your lunch with you) followed by a leisurely afternoon run back to the clubrooms, for prize-giving between 5:00 and 6:00pm.
