From the Chair Well what a month. First off we have the lockdown limiting us in our movements. However on the bright side it’s a good chance to give our machines a little TLC. It has also been a sad month with the Club having 3 of its members pass away – Bill Skeggs, Alywn Hoskins and Dave Stuart. Our sincere condolences are with these families. For me however this month has proved a milestone in which on the 1st April 50 years ago I left school and started an apprenticeship with T R Taylors Reconditioning Shop. This continuing my interest in older vehicles. Here I learnt all the ins and outs of building motors, etc – white metalling, reboring/sleeving, valve grinding, something I’m still doing today and also still learning. Our National office sent down some homework for the Secretaries of each branch to do. This was a list of members whose contacts were incomplete whether it was the phone numbers, email address, etc. Janet enlisted the help of Rae Wilson and Barry Hayman to help with contacting these
members. It was also a good way of talking to some of our members and making sure they were okay. However there were some who couldn’t be contacted – no phone numbers or wrong phone numbers so if you weren’t contacted by these people please contact Janet to update these details as it makes it a lot easier in keeping contact with our members. REMEMBER IF YOU CHANGE YOUR PHONE NUMBER, ADDRESS OR EMAIL ADDRESS THIS MUST BE PASSED ONTO OUR SECRETARY. With the Executive and Club meetings cancelled this month we are looking at having the Waimea Motorcycle run and PW, Post 60’s, P80’s run at a later date. Please hold onto your entry forms for now. Our Club AGM will also be postponed and voting papers will probably be out in the May issue of the Rumour. I had a call from the SI Club Captain Alon Mayhew asking after us and were things going okay. He also asked if anyone had a BSA Bantam D1 frame he could have to help him with a restoration. If anyone has one going please contact me and I will pass the information onto him. I would also like to thank Ken Officer for keeping an eye on our Clubrooms and for taking his lawnmower for a drive and mowing the lawns. Ray
Editor’s comments This is a very condensed version of the Rumour because we do not have access to the printer to get a printed version. Ray and Janet are going to print this one and post it to the usual recipients and I am emailing it to all the email addresses we have at the moment. If we have your correct email address you should receive this month’s version by email and maybe by post as well. We have been caught not being prepared for an emergency of this sort. Many of us are reasonably well prepared for the likes of floods or earthquakes but we have failed to read the warnings from SARS etc so we need to have some serious discussions about the role the club plays in all of this in the future. Do we need to communicate more with our members during emergencies? How do we best do that? etc. In the meantime; stay in your bubble, keep well, keep safe. May Rumour closing date is 17 May 2020. Russell’s Ramblings We are fortunate during the lockdown our hobby allows us to restore vehicles on the premises. Working in the man caves are: • Stuart Francis who is working on his 1951-55 Aerial Square 4. The motor is now running but has a few teething problems. • A Harley Davidson special for hill climbing and sprint events is being assembled by Nick Weiring and Steve Winteringham. • Roy Shanks and Howard Kingsford Smith have their veteran Ford T’s running after serious motor work. • Brian Dunick has purchased in 1970 Chrysler Valiant Coupe with only 18,000 miles on the Speedo. • Brendan Sparks has a large 1930 Humber Pullman Saloon eight seater. • The Vintage Sunbeam Motorcycle belonging to Phil McDowell of Makarewa is coming together. The bike had racing plates on it when found. • Ray McCulloch has nearly finished a 1911 Aerial Single. He has made a back wheel by obtaining spokes from the UK, belt rim from Australia and tyre rim from Christchurch. Contrary to what is written in the Beaded Wheels cancelling all National Events, the National Veteran Rally at Gore in October has not been cancelled. Some websites worth looking at are; •

you would have attended. Thank you too, to those of you who have sent cards or made phone calls to the family. We are grateful for the gathering that was held for Alwyn when he received his 50 year membership. He did enjoy that afternoon.
