Chairmans Report Hi Everyone
The need to write reports seems to come round very fast, the month has been very busy for us having had 3 visits to the Clubrooms already, and Mt Cook Rally start approaching rapidly. Congratulations to the Team that organised and helped with the Cancer Society fund raiser. We had a good year with a figure around $4,000 being raised. Unfortunately, this date clashed with the final round of the S.I. Trials Trophy which several of our members attended. Our Club Night, of course, featured the Special General Meeting mainly for the vote on our newest Life Member and first Female Life Member, Nola Day, a big congratulations from us all for a well-deserved nomination. This was followed by some discussion around the proposed Subscription increase which the majority felt the need for, both an increase and also effort to be made by our National Committee to create savings where possible, without decreasing either quality or quantity of our magazine Beaded Wheels. Our report to the area representative will be voted on at our next committee meeting before being forwarded. Then our local MP, James Meager, gave us an update on all things political. It was good to attend the Wednesday Morning at the Clubrooms as normally this does not fit with my weekly commitments to other organisations. Joining the banter in the smoko room and observing the normal routine of those involved assists me in understanding what happens and what areas we might be able to improve to get more member involvement. These informal gatherings of members are becoming more popular amongst Branches; I have attended Marlborough’s regularly a few years ago and this month attended Nelson’s with normal numbers being 100 and 50 respectively. Our Opening Run this year was well attended and 59 sets of instructions were handed out but I didn’t count the cars, so a great effort all round, with a good number from Ashburton and our area representative Rebecca George and her father Earnest from North Otago also participating. By the time you receive this the Mt Cook Rally will have been run. Unfortunately numbers are down on last year but I feel there are several contributing factors such as, last years being the 70th, current fuel prices still being higher and unfortunately the fact that our members are also getting older. The number is still similar to previous years, so not all bad news. We are looking good for another motoring season. Kevin

You are invited to attend our non-competitive Veteran, Vintage and Commercial Rally, suggested accommodation where required is Northpark Motel, Washdyke, https://www.northparkmotel.co.nz/index.html or phone 0800 688 207, there is also an onsite restaurant The Ascot Sports House, to make life easy. Day one will start from Northpark Motel Car Park, where there is plenty or Trailer Parking available. There will be a minimum of 2 Rally routes to suit both 1-2 cylinder vehicles and more modern vehicles. Day 2, start point to be confirmed, will involve a short run to a place of interest and will conclude with field events then a dinner to celebrate a great weekends motoring. Owners of vehicles made on the continent of Europe are invited to take part in this event to celebrate Continental cars in our Club. Non members are welcome also. So bring out your Fiats, Ferraris, Renaults, Peugeots, Skodas, VWs, Mercedes, Volvos or anything made in Europe, to the Clubrooms from 9.30am for 10.30am start. You will be able to purchase a meal at our lunch stop if desired.
S.I. TRIALS 2026

Unfortunately, the last round of the Trials clashed with our Cancer Fund Raiser. Despite this 4 cars and 7 drivers attended. For the first time the Marlborough and Nelson Trials were both held the same weekend and at the same location, on the east side of Havelock. The combined event certainly makes the long drive to participate more worthwhile. South Canterbury Team was well placed heading to this final event for the S.I. Trophy. This is decided on the best 4 out of 5 results for each competitor, with the lowest scoring round being dropped, each competitor must complete 4 rounds to qualify for the Trophy. With 4 of the 5 hosting Branches being represented in the final 12 entrants that qualified, the competition was tight. Unfortunately, Jodie Leitch had unrepairable (on the day) issues so finished the day in Russell Sherwins car and star of the weekend was Bruce Brown, my second driver having great results both days for a rookie, he even selected the correct colour coat for the day.

PARTS DEPT. REPORT SEPTEMBER. 2026 The Parts Dept. this month has managed to clear from the yard; Two Austin 7 cars, which gives us a little more space. This leaves one Morris 10 which is in a sorry state, but we would like it to go to a happy home rather than the scrap yard. However, we have a rather narrow window here and a quick response to this would be appreciated. NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY As always stuff keeps trickling in to the Library, with Nelson Bowden bringing in a bagful of offerings and Brian Grace donating some display items including one of the souvenir trays given to each entrant on the 1980 International Rally based in Rotorua, a huge event, which was pretty well supported by South Canterbury members. I was up there for a few days for the National Executive Meeting (I was a nationally elected member of the Executive in those days before it was known as the Management Committee), and at one stage I attended a hill climb where I was talking to the owner of a superb long wheel base Biddle and Smart bodied 1929 Hudson. I asked him about its fuel consumption and he replied, “Oh I’m getting a good 10 miles per gallon out of it now”. I blanched at that and he went on to say, “When I first got her going I was only getting 4 MPG out of it.” Its all relative, folks! Barry Barnes, Librarian EDITORIAL This issue of the Tricar may look a little different from previous ones. Up until now it has been produced using Microsoft Publisher but in their infinite wisdom Microsoft have withdrawn that product from 1 October. They suggest Microsoft Word is a suitable product for this type of publication so I am doing my best to use it. I am struggling a bit and don’t know how the final product will turn out For printing purposes I have to lay it out on A4 whereas the pages of the booklet are A5. Emailed copies may well end up as A4 pages. So please bear with me and if anyone is able to assist me with a better product in future please get in touch. TRICAR PRODUCTION COSTS
Some members have baulked at the costs being charged for a printed Copy. Emailing the magazine is virtually cost free. Actual current costs to post out a printed copy are: Printing $3.50 per copy, Postage $3.70 per issue. That is a total of $87.60 per year. Nearly twice as much as we are asking members to pay. If we were to revert to posting out a printed copy to all members, we would have to increase our levy to at least $100 to accommodate that. The total existing $20.00 levy paid by recipients as part of their annual subscription does not even cover the shortfall on actual costs. So the cost is covered from the total levies received. The Branch is reliant on funds from other sources like Hall hires, parts sales and the Swap Meet to supplement the levies to cover these and all other costs in running the Branch.. Hopefully, this gives members some idea of what is involved..

As we were going to be in Wellington on the day of our own Daffodil Rally Carla and I took the Studebaker down to Waimate for their Display held the week prior. A pleasant day weather wise and over 50 display vehicles made for a successful day with the Saturday Market right opposite offering a browse around and somewhere to get some lunch. SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING NEW LIFE MEMBER
Nola Day Our September Special General Meeting saw long serving member Nola Day recognized as the first female Life Member in our Branch - a singular honour and singularly well deserved. Nola has hardly slowed down at all since relinquishing her Treasurer’s role organising this year’s very successful Daffodil Rally and already planning where to go for the next year’s Daffodil Rally Thanks to the 52 members who attended the meeting, a very good turnout. Well done Nola.
The opportunity was also taken during the meeting to acquaint members with the current financial situation Chairman Kevin presenting Nola with of the National Club and some proposals for her Life Member Badge redressing the issue were discussed attracting very good feedback from members that will lead our Branch response. Our guest speaker for the evening was Rangitata MP James Meager who covered a wide range but particularly what was happening and what was proposed in his Portfolios of Minister for the South Island and Associate Minister of Transport. Members were not at all over awed and an animated question and answer and discussion session followed.
South Canterbury Branch Daffodil Rally, 30 August 2026
Our Daffodil Rally for Cancer attracted over 100 vehicles, meeting at the Caroline Bay Northern Carpark before 10:00am, in support of the Cancer Society. The run took us through west Timaru to Hadlow, Rosewill Valley and Pleasant Point, the Fairlie Flyer being in a state of hibernation that day. Waitohi and Temuka were then reached before dairy farm central, Clandeboye and Orari. With a busy Geraldine encountered it was a trip into Peel Forest to the environs of the Peel Forest Station and historic homestead. Adjoining paddocks swallowed up our vehicles, and time was taken to look around the public areas of the grounds, the raffle table and food carts doing a roaring trade. It has been a busy month getting the Mt Cook Rally Packs organised and all the other bits for the Rally sorted as we are away to warmer climes. Ashley Milliken and Kevin Mercer will be running the weekend. Thanks to Michelle Ward for helping out at the Twizel end. The Mid-Week run was planned to visit a shed in Geraldine, but was cancelled at the last minute so Google Maps helped plot a course and we ended up at Orari Café. We will hold over the visit for a future Mid Week run. Have also had to sort out the Opening Run with Ashburton, managed to get it all sorted and ready to go. Christmas Foodbank Drive Thanks to those who brought along items of non-perishable food to the start of the Opening Run. It’s a great first step toward our proposed collection that we will deliver to the Food Banks in Club vehicles just prior to Christmas. If everyone starting one of our events could please bring an item we will be able to make an impressive donation. People attending Club Nights or Dad’s Army sessions on a Wednesday are also invited to contribute, tinned food, pasta, rice, cereal, tea, coffee and other long-life essentials . A collection box will be in the Clubrooms. It’s a simple way to give back to our community and show we are not just about our beautiful old cars. Let’s see how much we can collect and make our cars, our Club and our members part of something worthwhile. Fill the boot for Christmas!. Ross and Wendy Hamilton.

Report on Mid Week Run. Club Captain Ross had a very good turnout for the final Mid Week run of the season and despite a hastily rearranged route -see above- everyone enjoyed both the run out to Orari via roads to the west of Timaru through Pleasant Point and Geraldine and then a most congenial time at the café. An unexpected brief hailstorm after just leaving the Scenic Reserve saw one hardy top down driver stop to hastily erect the hood.

A Miscellany of Club News
New members Simon Burrell and Paul Masters have shown up at recent Wednesday session at the Parts Dept. Both had a good reccy around and Simon managed to get a grease cap for his Ford Pilot but not the correct badge for the grille centre, (can anyone help with this) while Paul had a good look around the Library too. Good to see them both at the SGM too. Note to other new members – do come along, we are actually keen for you to enjoy your participation in our Club. In that vein, good to also see Des and Irene Hansen at all our recent events, SGM, Mid Week Run and the Opening Run and believe Mt Cook is also on the agenda. The Waimate Swap meet saw a motley collection of likely lads, and a couple of ladesses, from South Canterbury Br, having a look around. Hopefully most found something of interest while supporting our southern neighbours. This photo shows what $4000 of tyres looks like. They are metric size 13x45 imported from LongstoneTyres in England for the 1924 Peugeot type 177B. If anyone else is thinking of doing the same thing do your homework first on currency rates, freight costs, clearance costs, insurance, Tyrewise levy and all the other bits, then breathe deeply like I did, and take the plunge! John Foster is a great example of how you can’t keep a good man down. Although having suffered some significant health issues over the last wee while, he was still there involved with the Daffodil deliveries again this year only to shortly afterward suffer a heart attack that saw him helicoptered to Christchurch for treatment. This caused him to miss the Daffodil Rally, but, hey, he was back again at the opening run with the 1933 Rolls Royce 20/25 and is planning to take the 1923 Delaunay Belleville to Mt Cook. Talking to Rob Ross from Ashburton at the opening run and he was telling me he has been asked to work on a Willys Knight that is a very rare one . Its a V8 around 1920 I think Rob said. I have never even heard of a Willys Knight V8 Also at the Opening Run Ashley Milliken was demonstrating a unique feature of the 1926 Master 6 Buick -the optional food warmer. A superb example of Buick’s motto “When better automobiles are built Buick will build them”. This feature was also latched on to by some other manufacturers but of course seldom reaching the same high standards. Some even required wrapping of one’s food in tinfoil prior to use - shudder! Ron Hammer has advised he has sold off the surplus vehicles he advertised, The Renault 5 has gone south and the Riley 4/72 has headed north.
OPENING RUN WITH ASHBURTON AND OAMARU 2026 Opening run with Ashburton On a clear spring morning over 50 vehicles from between Mid Canterbury and North Otago materialised outside our Redruth clubrooms, many with teas and coffees served by Sandy McMillan’s granddaughters inside. With the run being organised by Ross and Wendy Hamilton and a briefing by Chairman Kevin Mercer it was a trip up into Fairview, down into Taiko and across to Totara Valley. With Pleasant Point and their hibernating 1952 Ford Firetruck encountered, it was across the Opihi River into Richard Pearse country, Waitohi with some stopping for photo-ops at the monument. With a few cars soon covered in gravel road dust it was up into Te Moana and across to Woodbury, the field easily swallowing up our vehicles. With picnics had we were soon summoned to a field test, that did not involve vehicles - rather it was teams of 4 throwing sticks to make standing sticks of the opponents fall over. Nearby were several motorhomes, a number almost the same price as a small house was several years ago. Overall a great run, especially with the weather gods playing ball this time. Shannon Stevenson

The Central Otago Branch of the VCC is holding its annual Central Otago Gold Motorcycle Rally on the 20th February 2027 If you require preliminary details for travel planning, they can be obtained by calling Ken Roberts on 021 369413. kbcroberts@xtra.co.nz Your Editor has attended the first 2 of these events and intends to do so again despite the busy time just beforehand! Accommodation in the area is not always easy to get especially at short notice so early booking could be a worthwhile thought.

It has a glass rear window complete with heating element and correct switch. Only 144000kms. Present senior owner has pampered the car and covered only 9000km during his 10 year ownership. Fitted with accessory driving lights and wheels have been repainted in Shadow Chrome. Its original spec and unmolested. Has been valued at $16000.
