Hi fellow members, On the weekend of 16/17 /18 of August I attended the National VCC Executive meeting and AGM in Greymouth on your behalf accompanied by John Campbell . The executive meeting stated on the Friday night & continued after the AGM on Saturday .On the Sunday morning we visited a couple of sheds before heading home. More later. The recurring theme over the weekend was the importance of involving younger people in the club. At present 66% of all VCC members are 65 and older,25% are 51-65 yrs old. (ie) 91% , Scary isn’t it. On the slightly brighter side, 62% of new membership applications were under 65. Our local branch numbers have increased from 239 in 2000 to 346 in 2019. The VCC needs to actively encourage the involvement of more young people such as children, grandchildren getting them hands on experience with older cars. New committee member, Oliver Irving has suggested that we offer vintage/ classic car rides during our open day in January. I think we could expand on that with schools offering visits to suitable workshops to interested young people. Our cars are “Living History” and we need to have them out & about as much as possible so the the general public can interact with us and the cars and hopefully foster interest in our hobby . Founding member Andrew Anderson spoke strongly on the involvement of youth. Other major matters that were dealt with were , The VCC National /Daffodil day ,29 out of 36 branches participating. Online membership applications -proposal as presented by Murray Trounson. The draught Budget for 2019/2020. A remit tweaking the By- laws defining the procedure for Alteration to the Constitution . This was passed. A copy of this & other paper work & reports will be attached to the noticeboard for interested members to peruse. A remit from Marlborough Branch seeking to dilute who could present 50 year badges, was lost A copy of draught branch constitution was provided.
It is proposed that the VCC logo be updated as the existing logo which was based on the Bentley logo, is no longer relevant and doesn’t show 5 who we are. Proposed new logo’s will be shown at the next executive meeting in March 28th 2020. The AGM was opened by Greymouth mayor, Tony Kokshoorn and after dealing with the past minutes, The Annual Presidents report was adopted followed by the Financial statement. The results of the postal ballot for the election of 3 out o 4 management committee positions resulted in the status quo of ,Tony Bartlett, Ed Boyd, and George Kear being re elected. The Calendar of Events was ratified. PLUS the entry form for this year’s “Dunvegan” motorcycle rally and an entry form for Next Years National Easter Rally in Horowhenua. See You at the Noggin and Natter on Sept 5th Ashley —————————————— MID WEEK RUN ON 8 TH AUGUST 2019 On a lovely warm sunny day, 17 cars left the club rooms heading for Beaconsfield Road, then turning into Rockdale Road we travelled along Fairview/Otipua/Wai-iti/Morgans/ Pages/Kelland Hill and Cartwrights Roads to the Pleasant Point Highway. After turning into Levels Plain Road we travelled on to Temuka to Domain Avenue, then did a circuit out into the country and back down Guild Road. After a tour around Temuka Streets we headed back to the clubrooms via Arowhenua Station & Seadown Roads to SHI. The countryside was looking very good with lots of early Spring growth and a few lambs to be seen. Thank you Warren and Kate for organising this run.

As I write these notes we are in London preparing for the next leg of our trip, the long flight to Vancouver. During our stay we visited the Haynes International Motor Museum which had, as would be expected, a great range of the manuals synonymous with the Haynes name and I imagine the major source of the funding to allow John Haynes to set up this excellent facility, just a few miles from the Dorset holiday home where we spent a pleasant week. The Museum had an excellent range of motoring exhibits ranging from 19th century to relatively modern. We were able to join in a guided tour of the vintage exhibits which provided some useful insights into the history of the displays, then under our own steam checked out the rest. One area consisted entirely of vehicles painted red. Probably around 50 or so and strangely I found that lessened the impact of the individual exhibits. Red overkill I guess! Back in London, a visit to the National Trust property, Morden Hall, just down the ALVIS road revealed a second hand bookshop, a common fundraiser at such properties, with a reasonable selection of motoring titles among their range. I purchased 2 for a pound each, less than $2 now with the pound falling in value each day. One was Behind The Wheel by Lord Montagu which covers early motoring in gratifying depth compared with some of the pot boilers around whose main virtues are their photos. The other one was Automobilia by Michael Worthington Williams, a motoring historian of note who has contributed to numerous motoring mags like the Automobile. It covers the many collectibles the like of which we feature in our Reference Room displays. A bonus was the discovery it was an autographed copy. Provided I can get them in our bags within the weight restrictions, both will end up in the Library.

Daffodil Rally for Cancer by Shannon Stevenson

On a fine late winter's Sunday at 9:30am, there was a turnout at Caroline Bay's Northern Carpark of well over 100 vehicles, all in the name of supporting the Cancer Society. With rally packs given out, it was a time to look at the machinery – a fair few from our branch, and from other local clubs; the Zephyr Zodiacs, MX5 and Convertible car club, Falcon Fairlane Club, MG and Holden clubs to name a few and other supporters. Several of us had pre-1939 vehicles, the oldest a 1923 Ford Model T pickup. With a briefing had by Ashley Milliken and John Foster, we were soon away out Virtue Avenue, and along Evans Street and the port, before reaching Timaru south, and Beaconsfield. With the rolling hills of Fairview giving some vehicles, and a number of cyclists in a road race a workout, we reached the upper reaches of Gleniti and Pages Road, before a trip into Rosewill and Levels Valleys to Pleasant Point – the dairy making a great pitstop for morning tea for a fair few. Headed north to Richard Pearse country, Waitohi, we were soon directed onto the Seven Sisters Road in the direction of Geraldine – the Cox Street a 'side-track' for a few of us. Headed north across the Orari and Hinds Rivers, we were soon onto the 'straight as an arrow' Hinds-Arundel Road – the Escort was able to stretch its legs at the open road limit at that point, encountering Clive Merry's Ford Mustang and John Campbell's 1930 Chevrolet doing the same. Crossing SH1 at Hinds township, we found ourselves headed south to Lowcliffe, and east across the Hinds river to reach the Longbeach area. The destination for the day was the Longbeach station itself – a large farm complex beside the Canterbury Bight with a long history in sheep farming, dating back to the later 19th century. Effectively a self-contained community at one point, much swamp was converted over the years to productive farmland. Facilities included a Post Office, School, General Store, Flourmill, Brickworks and a Smithy – a number of the buildings, and older farm implements still present. Our vehicles all managed to find parks around these buildings, and one – now a function centre – served as a backdrop to our lunch stop – a food trailer providing ample helpings of beef burgers and chips, and the Millikens selling raffles aplenty.
11 Now run by the Thomas family, a speech was had describing the history of the property, followed by the opportunity for us to view the buildings and homestead garden – itself covering several acres of land, complete with swimming pool, green areas suitable for several simultaneous cricket matches, a pond, a forest one could get lost in, various alcoves, one of Mid-Canterbury's oldest cob-cottages, and a picturesque 19th Century church, with its own private graveyard. Overall an interesting run, thankyou to all that made it happen.

Ashburton Garage Raid by Shannon Stevenson Heavy downpours on Saturday 10 August proved not to be a deterrent for Ashburton's Garage Raid. With a fair contingent of us headed up from Oamaru, Waimate and Timaru, the branch clubrooms at Tinwald were full by 9:30am, most participants having teas, coffees and biscuits in hand. With a briefing and instructions given, we were on our way by 10 to visit a number of private collections in the Ashburton environs. With three each on either side of Ashburton river, all would prove 'not-to-be-missed'. On the south side: Trevor Love's stable of Fords On the flats east of Tinwald, within a well kept paddock which at first glance would make an ideal equestrian venue were several sheds, all with well-kept machinery from the Ford stable. Vehicles featured included a 1917 Model T inside an enclosed trailer, a 1966 Mustang 289, 1956 Ford Thunderbird, 1956 F-Series truck, 1931 Model A truck, and a rustic, original patina 1925 Ford Model T. Further vehicles along the side stables included a David Brown Tractor, a club eligible 1986 Nissan Navara ute and an under the tarpaulin Ford Falcon XT – identified by the taillight indentations in the fabric. Stuart Cross' Ford, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Toyota collection Nestled close to the river was the collection of Stuart Cross. Housed within a purpose built shed and workshop were a fair number of Henry's finest from the UK, including immaculate examples of 1970s and 1980s Cortinas and Escorts, with several Aussie Falcons for good measure, and even a Laser – a Sierra wagon awaiting its turn outside for future work. This author was most taken with the 1980 Ford Escort in the same colour and trim level as his own – the Cross example sporting a stylish black vinyl roof. A Volkswagen Beetle and several collectable Mitsubishis were present,
15 along with several race prepped RWD Toyota Starlets, and a Subaru Impreza, complete with roll cage. Editor Bill would have particularly liked the sole Chevrolet on site, a 1955 in white over blue.
Ashburton Fire Museum At Tinwald's Plains Museum is the Ashburton Fire Museum collection. Housed in a new complex, the fire museum is a facinating physical look into the history of Ashburton's Volunteer Fire Brigade, with various well-presented appliances and memorabilia from throughout the years, all enthralling members. The museum had a cinematic feel to it, particularly with the smoke machines, sound effects and projector screen in action. On the north side: Hayden Tasker's car and motorcycle collection To the north-east of Ashburton, up a long driveway and past a van turned garden ornament is the immaculately laid out workshop of Hayden Tasker. Within were several motorcycle projects on the go, the bikes of various shapes and sizes – one taking the interest of many a rare Honda CX650 Turbo. Alongside were two well-presented Ford Falcon XA, one a Fairmont V8, the other a ute with a restored camper canopy. Showing us further around, Hayden took us to the garage attached to his house – which contained a vast collection of Honda police bikes, all of different specifications. (Chairman Ashleigh commented on an impressive Honda Collection which includes the only example of 4 prototypes made which is outside Japan).

Gerry Power's stable of Aussie Mopars At the end of a side road was Gerry's place, where down a short driveway were several sheds, each featuring a number of Australian Chrysler Valiants from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Included within were a rare nearly finished and recently painted VH Regal hardtop, a 1972 VH Charger R/T, VF Coupe, VG Pacer and what appeared to be an ex-hearse Valiant wagon, with covered over back window and with BBQ and sound system. In a further shed mostly packed with wood was a vehicle different in most ways from a Valiant, a wellpresented vintage Austin 7. Richard Hampton's Massey Ferguson shed
East of Ashburton, and down a boggy track was Richard's farm shed and workshop. This was home to a timeline of Massey Ferguson tractors throughout the 20th century, a mix within of restored, original condition, and projects. A tractor in question particularly taking the interest of many was a large 1981 4wd articulated, imported from the UK.
The raid was well organized, groups spread across sites accordingly including the lunch stop of pea-pie-pud – adding further to proceedings the adjoining Museum and parts shed were open to view. Cheers to the Ashburton Branch for a great garage raid. Shannon Stevenson

Sorry I did not get this in last month. I don’t know what Compo was sitting on when he used his crawler tractor to tow his new shed into his Peel Forest home a few months back because I have had his crawler seat & backrest sitting in my shed for a few years now after the late Arthur Schmeltz, another of Compo’s last of the Summer Wine Team had them recovered. I have told Compo a few times I had his seats but obviously they are not too important. Having spent many long hours sitting on rattling old crawlers I can verify that it would have been very painful to not have a seat to sit on. Thanks, Grant Mehrtens ————————————————Outback Excursion by Graham Pauley In order to escape the prolonged period of sub zero temperatures of the Mackenzie Country this months comments come from a much warmer Northern Territory of Australia. Arriving in Alice Springs we witnessed the start of the “Finke” an annual race for off road vehicles and motorcycles Quietly rusting away in the heat on a farm across 280km of desert near Katherine was this 1946 Chevrolet tracks from Alice Springs to the town of Finke, they then race back the next day. A visit to the Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs was next on the agenda to view the vast array of trucks in various states of repair, some of the restored examples are pictured here whilst outside a collection of others await their fate of either remaining in the condition they are in or being given a full restoration.

Unfortunately, for medical reasons I am compelled to hand the running of the parts shed back to John Campbell for a period of 9 weeks and would like to extend my thanks to him for once again stepping up to cover my absence. Max Millar has kindly donated some Graham Paige and miscellaneous other parts to our club with the promise of more to come when the weather warms up. We thank him and other parts donors for their generosity. Now that Spring is upon us it is time to prepare our vehicles for a new motoring season and the Parts Shed team is happy to assist with supply of items needed if we have them at very reasonable prices.
