MID WEEK RUN â€“ THURSDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2019

On a cool overcast day, 11 cars left the clubrooms and headed south on the main road to Makikihi, turning onto Makikihi/Hunter Road we then turned left onto Waimate/Hunter Road. After travelling along this road for some time we continued into Parsonage Road and right into Queen Street. After viewing the murals on the silos we turned into SH82, travelling through the gorge we turned left passing the Arno Hall and into Gum Tree Flat Road. Turning left at SH1 and crossing two bridges we turned left into Waihao Back Road. Back at Waimate we had afternoon tea at the area opposite the band rotunda. Very windy day but a most enjoyable scenic run. Thanks to Clive and Penny for arranging the run.

SCVCC Chairman’s Report October 2019

Hi Fellow enthusiasts,

The end of the year is now hurtling towards us. I’m very pleased to report that Neil Manchester is well on the mend after his & Ross Walkinshaw’s mishap, checking the route for the opening run. Ross is going well now too. There are lot’s of events on between now & November and help to run them would be greatly appreciated ,just contact the organisers. They are as follows, The Continental Vehicle Day, October 6th Kevin Manchester The National Veteran Rally 18-20 October Alistair Day The Mt Cook Rally 26-28 October Ashley Milliken. A number of our members have travelled extensively overseas in the past few months and I look forward to hearing them share some of their experiences with fellow members at future Noggin’s. Hint Hint ! See you on the 3rd Ashley

Cancer Rally and Daffodil Delivery

First, I want to thank everyone who helped with the rally and the daffodil deliveries. My special thanks to Neil Manchester for setting the rally route, and to everyone who help at the starting point and at the lunch stop. Also many thanks to Darren Ladbrook of S J Allen ltd for the provision of the portable toilets, much appreciated. We handed a cheque to the South Canterbury Cancer Society for $2565. Also, Mrs Thomas, of Longbeach Estate handed over $590 to the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society. She had requested that we give $5 a car for her to donate.

Now to the flower deliveries. I especially thank Norm Bunt for sorting the envelopes and the effort involved with working out the 21 areas that the club delivered to. Thank you to all the people who gave their time and cars to enable us to get 35000 daffodils delivered. This was a great project that was well supported by our club. Be proud of yourselves. It was lovely to come home to a bunch of daffodils left at our doorstep for me. John Foster

OPENING RUN

The joint opening run with Ashburton this year was organised by Sth Canterbury Branch. Our club captain Neil Manchester and team put together a most interesting route enjoyed by all who took part, using some little used roads taking us out south west of Timaru through AdairMaungati - Cannington via back line road to MaWaro then ending up at Waitohi Hall for lunch where the locals had a very interesting display featuring the history of the area. The afternoon run was out to Woodbury then back down to Geraldine enabling the Ashburton entrants to return home. The hardiest team on the Opening Upsetting that Neil was injured run motoring the old Overland while planning the route due to with the top down on a cold day. as â€œrun inâ€? with a farm loader Barbara and Roger Baird. in the Maungati area. Thankfully he is recovering OK, best wishes for your recovery Neil.

Bruce Fayen had the doubtful honour of having the bonnet up on the Prefect at various stages on the rally. We are not sure what for!

BEHIND THE HEDGE

The first of the Toyota Landcruisers sold here in New Zealand was this FJ series. They were powered with 6cyl petrol engines (a copy of the Chev 235cu in of the 1950â€™s) The only variation from the Chev engine was Toyota â€˜s carby. These proved to be rather thirsty on fuel but were a bullet proof 4x4. These first series vehicles have become very collectable but it is hard to find a rust free cab and chassis as they were predominantly given a hard life on farm use. ( Rodney Don used one of these as a spray truck for several years)

Alan Averis is seen here collecting a MGBGT which used to belong to his late wife Pat, who due to her failing health sold the car several years ago. Alan was very pleased to be able to buy the MG back when offered. Well done.

HIGH COUNTRY Report Having a part time “Retirement Job” for Twizel Auto & Marine (the AA Garage for the area) doing the WOF’s & operating the recovery vehicles sees me relocating some interesting cars. On a recent visit to Otemetata the 1962 Mk3 Zodiac of Oamaru’s Trevor Jopson suffered fuel problems and required me returning the car to his home. Whilst there I was privileged to be able to view some of his extensive collection including a 1958 Mk2 Zodiac convertible, a 1964 MK3 Zephyr Ute which according to Trevor were custom built by Hutchison Motors of Christchurch when under the directorship of the Sloane Brothers. An Australian assembled 1960 Mk2 Zephyr Ute is an attractive vehicle with external sun visor, 2 tone paint and the side body mouldings which set the vehicle off from what could be deemed the plain slab sided utes we had here. Some of our members “new” club vehicles seen lately.

The Chapmans 1936 Dodge. Paul Chapman seems to have deserted the Morris 1000 Marque for early American vehicles of late, a Graham Paige last year and this years purchase? An original 1936 Dodge sedan sourced from Marlborough but apparently a Temuka car originally. This car has been on the road continually so Paul has only done a bit of “TLC” to use it. A bit of a mishap driving it home though due to the Dodge only being driven locally by the previous owner the engine and radiator was sludged up, consequently it overheated when on the highway resulting in a cracked block so a replacement motor was fitted which runs great. Nice to see original cars like these in the club.

Always good to catch up with fellow members & weekend “Twizilians” Peter & Gail Casey who recently purchased this 1947 Ford Mercury V8 which I was invited to look over. It’s been around the the town for some time and is a very tidy solid car which runs well, has had some interior refurbishing and although the paint is a bit thin & faded in places it still looks great. For those going on the Mt Cook Rally at Labour Weekend keep an eye out for it around Twizel. Graham Pauley.
