Notes from the Library

After arriving back from our 2 months away I was sure I would find things in the Library in good fettle, and so it proved to be.. Thanks to those who have kept things rolling. In our travels in British Columbia we did not come across anything worthy of comment from a library perspective although we did encounter many vehicles on the road and round about, that fall within the interest period for our Club. Only other thing to report is that we were able to bring home the books referred to last month along with 3 copies of 2019 editions of the Automobile magazine picked up at a heritage miniature railway in the Dorset area of southern England for the princely sum of 10p each. (roughly 20c). a bit cheaper than the subscription rate! The influx of magazines into the Library have been partially dealt with, held up by my absence overseas. There have been some donations as follows which are gratefully acknowledged. Manuals from Lew Pemberton, James Lang and James Hamilton, the latter being items from his grandfathers estate he did not want seen going to the tip. A number of Japanese motorcycle handbooks feature. Alex Stewart has donated 2 books “A History of the Worlds Classic Cars” and the VCC of NZ publication “100 years of the Motorcar” Thanks to these donors. There were a large number of magazines placed out in the Clubrooms for members to pick over and they did diminish quite a lot, but there was a need to get them moved before the National Veteran Rally and I did not want them back in the Library. They were therefore taken to McLeans Island and offered free there. The whole lot went! Also taken were some duplicated books and manuals and although modestly priced individually, a cumulative total of $46.00 was achieved. These funds will be put to purchasing new tapes for labelling machine, suitable tape for repairing damaged books, folders for the Tricar and the like. I am also pleased to report the donation of a special book, “Bugatti” by Hugh Conway and Jacques Greilsamer” donated by Gaye Goodman. This book was purchased around about1982, at considerable expense, and so I am told, to the displeasure of his then wife, by the late Brian Goodman, formerly of Timaru and past Chairman of the Branch. Although a one time Bentley 3 litre owner, Brian seemingly aspired to Bugatti ownership, an aspiration not easily or cheaply achieved, and sadly never realised.
Gaye also gave me an early Mt Cook entry form , one of those with6a photo pasted on the cover, and Canty Br members Alan and Shirley Wills also donated some others. The generosity of these non Branch members is appreciated as is their support for our Branch over the years. The Library now holds a reasonable collection of these historic forms. 2020 Weekend Away
6/7/8/9 February Oamaru
This year we are taking advantage of Waitangi Day getting close to the weekend with an extra day away for those who want to. Oamaru has a variety of accommodations available and we already have a holiday home booked to provide the host venue for our communal meal. Nothing else set in stone but the rough itinerary was laid out in a previous Tricar. As usual no entry fee. Instructions provided before-hand. Club eligible vehicles welcomed but not essential. Nothing is mandatory just a relaxed weekend. Would hope to see some new faces among the regulars. National Veteran Rally Committee sincerely thank all those who put their names forward to help for this big weekend. It is pleasing to know that we belong to such a great branch of the Vintage Car Club. When we called on your help, you delivered. Without the support from our VCC members this committee could not have run an event such as this National Veteran Rally. Our entrants all enjoyed the rally and they too were impressed at the support we received. National Veteran Rally.

Well, after such a horrendously wet Friday night after the complimentary Finger Tea at the clubrooms, we were all delighted to see a lovely blue sky and sunshine for the Saturday photo shoot which was held at Castle Claremont. This preceded a very successful Open Day at Caroline Bay from 11am – 3pm. The public turned out in droves which was pleasing to see. Field tests were carried out at a changed location because of the ground conditions. These proved to be a lot of fun, and after completing these, the entrants were invited to the Caroline Bay community room for the complimentary Wine and Cheese afternoon. This was very well received . An evening meal at the Clubrooms was also successful with 120 being catered for. A magnificent effort from all concerned. Sunday was rally day, and again a sunny day.
11 Today the entrants went from the Clubrooms in Timaru, over some glorious rolling country roads, then via Pleasant Point before their destination at Geraldine Domain for the lunch stop. After a scheduled visit to Geraldine Auto restorations, the entrants followed a route back to Timaru for a short visit to their accommodation before meeting again at Seven Oaks for the Presentation Dinner and prizegiving.
All in all a tremendous success which was enjoyed by Rally Entrants and the organizing crew of 7 people. A huge thanks to all members who gave generously of their time to assist in many ways.

The corvette is a C4 series mid to late 80s I would guess and it resides about 100 metres down the road from our sons place and keeps company with the neglected Mustang and big mid 60s Cadillac 2 door which is resting on the flattest rear tyre you could imagine!

Hi All Well what a month the Branch has had, Hosting the National Veteran Rally and holding the 64th Mt Cook Rally Firstly a HUGE thank you to Alistair and Nola Day for initially getting The Veteran Rally onto the National Calendar of Events and also taking on the running of the event, ably assisted by a small committee and other club members. A VERY successful event. The Event was attended by National President Diane Quarrie and her husband Geoff, North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie and her Husband Jim. Past National Presidents, Leigh Craythorne and John Coomber. The Mt Cook Rally went off well despite the diabolical winds on Sunday. It’s a shame there isn’t a Bravery award for the Motorcyclists. There were 67 entries in the Rally including 6 Veterans , and 5 motorcycles A big thanks to the member that helped with the field tests and parking. The new Trophy Certificates seemed to be well received Coming up we have the Safari Weekend Plus the All American Weekend and The Veteran/ Vintage / Commercial Run ,Stick Campbell has some interesting destinations in mind for that. ALSO The Sth Canterbury Museum is looking for about 6 Vintage cars for display behind the Museum from 10 ---1.30 on Saturday Nov 16th Whilst I can’t be there please contact me for details See you at the N&N on the7th Ashley

Timaru Continental Vehicle Day – by Shannon Stevenson On Sunday October 6, a fine spring day with sun blazing overhead, over 20 vehicles showed up at our Redruth clubrooms, ready for an afternoon's South Canterbury motoring, organised by Kevin Manchester and Ross Luscombe. Within the Redruth Street environs were a variety of machinery from throughout the European continent – French Peugeots, Renaults, Citroens, Simca, and Delaunay-Belleville, German BMWs, Volkswagens, MercedesBenz and Opel, Swedish Volvo and Saab, and Italian Fiats, Alfa Romeo and attracting the eyes of many, a rare 1966 Iso Grifo coupe. Further supporting the day were a few 'poms', and from the far east, a much newer than it looked neo-classical 1990 Mitsuoka Le-Seyde coupe, based upon a Nissan Silvia. With a briefing had just before 2pm, it was to the south-west we went, headed up Beaconsfield Road, and into Adair and Otipua, before crossing Brassells Bridge into the Manchester's stamping ground, Southburn. It was at Brassells Bridge where one 'supporter car', my 1980 Ford Escort, found itself in the midst of a 'Fix Or Repair Daily' moment – too much thirst for the green juice – though with assistance from Neil Manchester and Ross Luscombe was soon mobile again, the gasket issue attended to the following week. Headed South of Southburn, we were soon into the rises and dips of Talbot Road, and over Greys Crossing into Esk Valley, up the Agnew Road hill and onto Campbell and Forrests – with Renault Dauphine driver Kevin Manchester on route duties a patch of gravel was reached, headed

onto the Back Line Road and the Hunter Region. It was here where we had a choice of route, gravel or sealed, a few taking the rarely travelled gravel option, into Upper Hook. In due course, Waimate was approached from the west, a number of us fascinated by the new housing on lifestyle blocks out back of the golf course. Headed into the Waimate CBD, our end stop was 'Cafe on Queen', a modern establishment able to take all participants – coffee and carrot cake going down well.
