I would like to express my gratitude to all of the Wednesday team who pitched in and helped with loading transporting and unloading of the swap meet trailers and to those who manned them on the day. On behalf of the club I would like to mention the generosity of several donors to our parts shed. The first is Andy Davidson from Temuka who has gifted us tools, pullers, quite a range of new spark plugs and other miscellaneous items. Secondly Eddie Craig has provided a 78 Mazda 626 diesel and spares for the Wednesday Team to use as their next project. This will be my last report until August and that will only be if I am fortunate enough to remain as Parts Manager after the AGM! Penny and myself are taking the opportunity to escape to the Northern Hemisphere for half the winter and John Campbell has kindly offered to step into the breech until my return in late July. ———————————— CANCER RALLY IN AUGUST
As you will all be aware, the Vintage Car Club will be holding its annual rally at the end of August. This is a supporting fundraiser for the cancer society , and our branch usually holds a well supported Raffle. I am happy to start collecting gifts anyone may have for this worthwhile cause. I have used all my FLY BYS points and have managed to acquire quite a few things to use as raffle prizes. Maybe you could do the same. I am also able to purchase great gifts from a website if people are wanting to donate money. Monetary gifts can be put into an envelope and left at the clubrooms, or popped thru my locked letter box. You can be assured I will purchase worthwhile and affordable gifts. I am happy to receive anything from now until beginning of July and get it all sorted before go away on holiday. John Foster will be organising another atractive venue to go to on the day, so any help I can give him before I go he will appreciate. He will also need help on the day so mark your calendars now, or even ring anytime from now on and make your names know please. Many hands make light work. I think Cancer will have affected almost every branch member in some way, shape or form. This is a small way we can contribute. Plan ahead. Many thanks. Nola Day

MIDWEEK RALLY 11 APRIL 2019 by Barry Smith
About 19 cars (modern & old) attended the first mid week rally, a very good attendance considering the weather conditions werent the greatest. A warm welcome to Jan & Mac McMillan, Peter & Karen Nixon & Hugh & Marie Coughlan on their first mid-week rally. After travelling along Fairview RD, down Taiko zig zag to Davisons RD onto the main highway, we all met up again at Pleasant Point Railway. A few members looked at the garage & shop across the road. We then motored out via Opihi RD to Hanging Rock bridge picnic area. Unfortunately, the drizzle started as we unpacked our gear, so we ventured back to Pleasant Point domain where we set up in a more sheltered spot. Many thanks to everyone for attending. We look forward to the next run in May. ——————————
CHAIRMANS REPORT Hi all The Swap Meet has been and gone, Whew what an event , a tremendous effort from Colin Johnstone and his team and all who contributed in anyway. The weather was certainly kind on the day. The Clean up crew did an excellent job on the Sunday with everything done & dusted before 11am. Coming up this month is the PV-P80 Rally & the Restoration run. Next month is the AGM and there will be positions needing filling nomination forms at the Noggin & Natter. I have got to say how impressed I’m with the parts shed every time I visit , things are increasingly much easier to find . Well done Clive & team. I recommend a visit. I hope all those that attended the Easter Rally had a great time. I’m off on the Veteran& Vintage Tour around the West Coast early in May. Ashley
A TALE FROM LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE CREW

Most people when faced with shifting a complete garage in one piece would call on the local transport company with a crane truck to do the job but not our “summer wine” team, “Como” decided to borrow a trailer and with the help of Graeme and Bruce jack the garage up, back the trailer inside, fit support bearers cross the deck, lower it down and then tow it with of all things a “pint size” 4WD Suzuki Over width permit? what for! The route was from Geraldine via back roads, through the Orari River bed and on up to Peel Forest, but that’s not all, the property was at Blandswood with steep and difficult access so the answer was to hook the trailer (and garage) onto “Comos” TD6 crawler to complete the positioning of the garage, however, “problem”, the TD6 didn’t have any brakes! So Como’s summer wine team had to carry posts to put in front of the crawler at strategic points to stop the machine, so with “much drama” the garage was eventually in position. Thanks to the Summer Wine team, SCVCC members Como (Alan Averis) and helpers Graeme Rae and Bruce Fayen .The moral of the story, Never tell Alan Averis a job can’t be done!, that just makes him more determined to do it!

This truck was once a mid 1930’s Ford V/8 (before it had the tree growing out of the engine bay). This era of Ford trucks were very popular with transport companies as the flat head V/8 developed more HP than equivalent Bedfords etc of the 1930’s ————————————

Hello Shona & Bill, Look who upstaged someone pretending to be the Fat Controller at the Point Rail Station on Sunday. The other guy only had a red jacket on, didn’t look anything like the dude in the old story books We did a poker run for the Falcon Fairlane Nationals; cards were picked up from the Phar Lap statue from a jockey; then onto Richard Pearse where an aviator handed out his cards; then down to me at Pleasant Point; then upto the 4 Square Grocery man at Cave store for another card & onto the Albury Pub for lunch. There was only 120 of us, bit of a squeeze! Cheers, Grant Mehrtens

Notes from the Library
Stuff still keeps arriving in the Library. Ron Cooper dropped off a copy of “Motorbikes around New Zealand” and Ashley Southgate brought along another 17 more books to go with the 40 plus previously donated. Mostly motor racing related and dating back to the 1960s they feature well known names like Stirling Moss, John Surtees, and the legendary Mercedes team Manager Alfred Neubayer. An interesting volume is Racing Years 59/60 Waimate 50. A quantity of surplus manuals and duplicate books made a trip to the Swap Meet and most of them came back again! They will still be available to members at a modest cost. The surplus magazines etc available free have been whittled down somewhat but there are still quite a number there so come along on a Club Night or Wednesday morning and help yourself. Although not strictly Library related I have been chuffed at the positive response to my recent Beaded Wheels article on the Star and mentioning my Dad’s 1915 Humber. Here’s a couple of pictures that may be of interest. One is of the Humber atop the Kilmog alongside my brothers 1913 BSA which we drove and rode to the first Windsor Rally in Oamaru 1961. Yes that’s me beside the Humber. I was only 19, and Robin 17! The other one is Forrest Dixon’s Stanley Steamer in about the same year. The plates on it indicated it had not been registered for road use since 1933/34! It is now restored and going, lives in Waihi Beach and is owned by Forrest’s grandson. A

Another unusual car I spotted this week was this LHD 1961 Alfa Romeo16 Spider whose owners were from York in the UK. Also heading through Twizel recently on the back of a car transporter was a very dusty 1954 Vauxhall Velox perhaps obviously heading to its new home & a restoration job.

STH CANTERBURY MEMBERS SUCCESSFUL AT NZ EASTER10 RALLY AT ASHBURTON An enjoyable well organised rally was participated in by a large contingent from our branch and consequently took out several awards. They were The Fosterswinner of the Post Vintage class in their 1934 Rolls Royce seen here at the Methven lunch venue.

Members of the MG car club of NZ on their way to their bi annual pre 1956 Rally to be held in Cromwell this year paid a quick visit to Twizel where I managed to photograph a few examples of the marque. pictured amongst the line up are a 1932 MG Magna & a left hook 1951 TD. Approx 60 cars partook in the week long event. Another bi annual event was The UK based Talbot Owners Rally which saw a number of overseas entrants bring their cars to do a extensive tour of NZ travelling in 18 cars from the 1928 - 36 era. The group was made up of 11 from the UK, 1 from Ireland, 2 from Holland & 4 from NZ. Pictured with his 1934 Talbot

The Saturdays rallies were out north west of Ashburton in various directions all ending up in the Methven school grounds for lunch, the weather being very pleasant made for an enjoyable stop over. Afternoon options on the route back were to Barr Hill village, the Hamptons tractor collection and Bruce McIlroys Bentley Rolls Royce workshop. We chose the latter as we hadn’t had the opportunity in the past to view Bruce’s facility, we were not disappointed, what a fabulous workshop and full of superb cars most in for servicing and some having a full rebuild. The Sunday event as mentioned was rained out but everyone was able to socialise indoors in the race course facility, then several entrants visited the VCC museum and parts shed in the afternoon. The evening dinner and prize giving was an excellent evening with a superb meal and hosted by MC Peter Mac- a Canterbury radio announcer for many years, he was also the after dinner speaker and gave a very informative history on the heritage projects in Ashburton including the VCC, Steam railway and Aviation centre which he was very much a part of in setting up in his younger years. Very enjoyable evening. Congratulations Ashburton on putting on a great weekend for the Easter Rally and the clubs 50th Anniversary. ED. Bill

Sth Canterbury also received the Sun Alliance award for the best club representation and also took out the Pennzoil competition award. Quite a clean up!
The weekends events were based at the Ashburton Race course, registration Friday afternoon, Rally day start point on Saturday and Sunday public display and field tests which unfortunately due to very wet miserable conditions the field tests were restricted to a questionaire held indoors.
