Hi Fellow Members ,
Well then year has got off to a faltering start, we are lucky that we have had January’s and early February’s events behind us, looking forward the Motorcycle rally is happening BUT the Mid Island Rally & Swap Meet are canned ,due to the insidious march of Omricon and The Vaccine Mandates. Gatherings at our Clubrooms over 25 people require Vaccine passes till further notice. As “Temporary” TriCar Editor I would like to thank everybody for their contributions this month. Keep it Up I , on behalf of the Club like to extend condolences to Dave & Leigh Roddick on the passing of Tony Also to Nora for the passing of Alan and to Colin . Esme Kyle lost her mother recently as well. Looking ahead, it’s a matter off wait & see I would like to organise an informal run in March and we can advise details by Email. Those without email , contact me after the N&N if you are interested and you will be phoned Hoping to report better news in the April Tri Car

This years run took members from the clubrooms to St Andrews via the back roads then on to Makikihi turning inland to Waimate and through the Waimate Gorge to McCulloghs Bridge, down Gum Tree Flat Rd to SH1 ,left into Waiho Back Rd and Knottingly Park where we gathered for lunch, lots of shady trees and good company. Home at your own pace.
Notes from the Library 2022

As mentioned last month I have been checking through the first lot of my former magazine collection that I have taken down to the Library. There is now a large number of duplicates out on the table for members to help themselves from, and include several of the popular Classic car mags. Also Antique Automobile and Restored Cars and Classic Bike are among the titles. It’s worth repeating that we also have many duplicated manuals handbooks and old motoring related books that are available at a modest cost. If you need a manual for your car or it is missing the owners hand book supplied when it was new, we may be able to help especially if it’s a post war model. The latest issue of Beaded Wheels has great coverage on the New Plymouth Vero rally. How lucky was the timing with both weather and that other business that keeps rearing its ugly head and making life difficult with the need to adopt measures to combat spread. Our Weekend Away still went ahead with a record number of participants and we were equally lucky that the predicted spread of Omicron did not eventuate though only a few days later things are changing fast. We also were lucky with the weather and the various visits we had planned were well received by all. Quite a satisfying result for the last one I plan to organize. Meanwhile back to the Library. I acknowledge a further box full of books from Les Wenlock’s estate. Thanks again to Ros and Donald (Stick) Campbell who brought them in. Among these books is “One for the Road” a superb collection of tales and articles covering motoring history of Australia and New Zealand from early up to 1974 with authors like Barry Crump, Pedr Davis and Bruce McLaren featuring. Other notable titles include Chev 55-57 Consumer Guide, Cast Iron Wonder (history of the Chev 6), British Family Cars of the 50s, and a Pictorial guide to the Montagu Motor Museums dating back to 1965. This is a bit of a misnomer as it contains a meagre assortment of pictures most of which are familiar from the souvenir ware, calendars etc the Montagu organization pumped out but it also contains details of an impressive inventory with useful details about each one, numerous of which are still

displayed at the museum’s successor, the National Motor Museum which I had the good fortune to visit about 5 years ago. I also acknowledge a donation from Chairman Ashley of an interesting volume, The Leyland Papers, which covers the story of British Leyland up to 1973. It ends with the authors high hopes that the determined Lord (Sir Donald) Stokes would “steer the organization to match their policies to its resources and hit targets within the range of its firepower”. Well, we all know how that turned out don’t we? Finally, I would like to give a shout out to member Gareth Heywood from South Canterbury Toyota who organized for us to receive a number of parts catalogues for Vauxhall, Bedford, Chevette, Holden Statesman, and Holden HX and HT. And they even delivered them to us. Thanks Gareth. With the uncertainty of Covid and its inexorable spread in coming days I suspect many will like myself be looking to limit social connection over the next wee while. If so, why not grab some reading matter for the extra spare time? I would, however, request visitors to the Library to wear their masks please. Barry B

We have some more catalogues that contain cross-referencing numbers for identification purposes. If you can supply a part number or a sample of any of the above items there is a good chance we can find a new one in our extensive range. Visitor numbers appear down somewhat due to the pandemic but we continue to be open for business every Wednesday from 9 to 12 for the foreseeable future and welcome your visit with the appropriate safety protocols.

Well the International Rally we attended in New Plymouth is over. All that planning, all those changes, and now it’s been and gone. From the very first day to the very last day a week later it was all go and such fun. We arrived in New Plymouth on the Friday after an exceptionally smooth ferry crossing on the Blue Bridge. Saturday we just blobbed and got our bearings and later in the day John and Wendy Martin from Cromwell joined us at our shared unit. Sunday was rally day pick up, and a chance to meet people that we had encountered on previous rallies. The welcome and briefing took place and we were able to do our own thing Sunday night. The weather was HOT, HOT, HOT and continued all week. Monday morning the first of the rally days was fabulous, and we ended up in Tikorangi. We entered the Tuesdays competitive run, just so that we could have another day of motoring. Surprised or shocked ourselves I think, by getting 9th in our class of 42. Not bad for not taking mileage, not taking times etc. Not that it would have done us any good anyway as our first stage was at 18mph, second stage at 25 mph, third and final stage 32.5 mph. And we have no idea where the check points were. A heap of fun and fabulous hilly roads thru lovely scenic gorges and roads. Wednesday we travelled on some truly exceptional rally roads. Ended up at Opunake, then back to New Plymouth for the presentation of the time trial from the day before. The only presentations made over the weekend, so that just shows how unimportant the competitive side was. Thursday saw us at Whangamomona. Think nearly everyone went there so was a bottle neck getting the parking in some sort of order. We had our lunch etc with us but that was put aside when we saw and smelt the devine food coming out of the pub, and one of the nicest coffees we have had ever. We called that our morning tea and found a cosy quiet place for lunch and friends from Dunedin joined us, about 2pm. Plenty of time for chatting and two rally routes to get back to Ingelwood for our Street Party. Of course another well planned rally route in the morning/afternoon. The street party was a great night Musta been a nightmare trying to get the cars parked on the streets before the public came, and they came in droves. A magnificent sight and really wished we’d owned a drone. The music played for the whole time, with large speakers set up all along the roadsides. 4pm til 8pm. Plenty to see and do. Shops were open offering discounts as well.

Friday saw us again taking the long rally route to Hawera which also took us to Tawhiti Museum. For those that haven’t been it’s a real bucket list place to go. We’d been before but so much more to see now and the boat ride running this time so we did that as well. Well worth the $15 each. The afternoon run took us back to New Plymouth to enable those going to the final dinner to get ready. We didn’t go as we thought we’d be going to Wanganui for the Burma Rally either Fri Night or early Sat morning. However that was all cancelled because of the Covid regulations. Not to worry we were told it was a great night. The evenings entertainment was second to none. Fabulous lineups everynight, starting with Marian Burns and the McSweeney Bros for an Irish night. She has energy to burn and gets everyone going. I was stunned that not many had heard of her, we thought she was well known everywhere. Tuesday night saw us entertained by Jodi Vaughan and also Che Orton. He was an Elvis impersonator and was really good. Next night we had the Howard Morrison Quartet take 2, and the music and song was just superb. Thursday was our street party in Ingelwood and that was absolutely amazing. A glich getting things organised to get us all into the streets that had been closed off for all of us. 4 cars wide and mega length over several streets to fit all 475 cars in. A mammoth effort but truly worth it. The shops had lots of rally entrant specials on and in fact we went back the next day on our way back from a rally day, to make our purchases. The bands were playing, with speakers set up all along the road verges, and everyone just partied up for the 4 hours we were there. Seemingly Ingelwood is well known for this type of street party for car clubs. Our Timaru council could learn a lot from them we reckon. Shane Cortese and the band played for the final dinner on the Friday night. Lots were up dancing and a good night was had by all attendees Saturday saw us all packing up and leaving New Plymouth. The organisation of the whole weekend was exceptional and with the many road closure because of major roadworks the rally routes had to changed at a moments notice. A logistical nightmare for them, but to us, the entrants, it was seamless. They deserve medals those people. An addition to our instructions was given out with the “peak news” which we all received daily. A magnificent effort from all involved to allow us entrants to enjoy a full week of enjoyment and camaraderie with like minded people. Entrants from South Canterbury were Nola & Alistair Day, John & Marion Foster, Peter Cooke, Bill & Shona Weir, Russell & Margaret Dale, Chris Chambers, Bruce & Jan McMillan.
I am sure they all enjoyed their trip as much as we did. We were to con- 12 tinue tripping around for another 5 weeks, but with damned Covid/ Omicron, plans sometimes need to change. After the New Plymouth Rally we went to Wanganui and joined the branch on the Sunday afternoon run. One question was asked when we came back in the gate. “How many miles had we travelled. We answered 42.1 miles and the answer was 42.2 miles so as we were the only ones close, we won. We only knew that because we had discussed our mileage was at 990099 when we were parked up in the Wanganui branch grounds. Just a fluke really. Sounds like with New Zealand now back at Red, then we won’t be able to attend the Art Deco in Napier, so our last week might be a bit curtailed. Time will tell. We did make a flexible BlueBridge boat crossing, so hopefully we will be able to change and come home earlier if we have to. In case you are wondering why our holiday is called P 2 P. It is Petrol to Pleasure, and we’ve certainly had that. NOLA
HIDDEN TALENT Barry Smith has recently launched his 1200mm long scale model of the “Bismark” after 15 long years of creation. The minute detail is incredible , a real credit to Barry. The radio controlled vessel is powered by 2 x 6volt electric motors

WEEKEND AWAY The Weekend Away, a long standing Waitangi Weekend institution in the SCVCC calendar, organised by Barry and Carla Barnes took place for the final time. For the 2022 Weekend Away, it was decided to hit the back country roads to Otago, the end-point Alexandra. On a winter-like February morning, over 15 vehicles appeared outside our clubrooms, ready for day's Central Otago motoring. Of these three were pre-1940 – John Campbell's 1930 Chevrolet, Clive Merry's 1938 Chevrolet and John Foster's 1939 Buick. A number were of Gallic persuasion, three Renaults and a Peugeot – Kevin Manchester inviting a number of Renault enthusiasts along for the trip. Setting off after 9am, it was a trip down South to Makihihi and Morven, with the morning tea stop at Waitaki River bridge. With the river crossed into North Otago for a fair few of us, it was a run up Seven Mile Road and SH83 to Georgetown, and a trip through the hills to Tokerahi and into the depths of the Danseys Pass. This part of the trip proved interesting for a number of us, with sheep mob traffic jams, an army of workers on the overhead lines, and the Manchester's having a long lunch within the pass, due to Kevin's unusual in NZ Renault Safrane 'failing to proceed'. Depending upon which Manchester that you talked to, the picnic was either “picturesque”, or “Bloody cold!” Escaping the pass, the tree-lined historic town of Naseby, the venue for our 2016 Weekend Away was the lunch stop. After lunch was a compulsory fuel stop for several in Ranfurly and a trip through the Maniototo, either travelling via the Poolburn and Ophir or via St Bathans. The evening and Sunday morning venue was the Alexandra Club, where no-one went away hungry. With breakfast settled down, a trip was made into the hills behind Alexandra where a full view of the town could be had in one direction, with mountain ranges in the other. Down the hill and over the mighty Clutha our first venue was Como Villa Museum & Vineyard, where we were treated to a wine tasting, and a look at 19 th century winemaking. A number of us took fascination with B&B accommodation up the hill, sans power and plumbing. With a quick lunch, we were soon headed west towards Clyde, to Lionel Day's expansive property. Within the property were several older vehicles awaiting work, and a shed full of projects on the go – including a Jaguar XK coupe, Vauxhall Viva HB, Volkswagen Beetle and – keeping to the Gallic theme – a 1988 Citroen 2CV. In the gardens though, was the piece-de-resistance, a narrow gauge railway – likely the only railway left in the area – complete with a scaled down Vulcan Railcar replica. A lot of us made a beeline to the replica, and nearly all of us had a ride, the rail route going up and down hills, and over bridges and through tunnels. For the rest of the afternoon, many of us took time in Clyde, with the Barnes Alexandra accommodation being the dinner venue, where many a story was shared. One highlight of the night was the rendition of “Happy Birthday” by John Campbell on his bagpipes, this being due to this author celebrating 4 decades, and Barry Barnes celebrating 8 decades.
17 For Monday for those staying on, it was a trip through the hills to fruit and dam country, Roxburgh, with a stop at the postcard-like surroundings of Shingle Creek, and its Antique shop. Filled to the brim within the former pub were many things encountered at a swapmeet, although of premium pricing. With Roxburgh reached it was a trip across the dam, and back over the Clutha into town, where picnics were adjacent to Otago VCC member Nevin Gough's 'crib', overlooking the river. At his crib were a number of old-timers of pre-1931 variety in the shed and garage at the back of the garden. A next visit in the mid afternoon was to Robbs Garage, where Colin Robb had a history lesson in British Ford models, with over 15 immaculate examples of different models from the 50s to 80s present. As it turned out, Colin knew John Campbell from years back, and the two spent much time catching up. After Roxburgh it was a trip back across the Clutha and down towards Millers Flat, where a detour had us at the remnants of the old Teviot Woolshed, the largest in the area until afire in 1924. Headed to Millers Flat, we soon arrived at the historic bakery, a great example of preservation, showing how things were done 'way back when'. With the weather of the 'boiling egg on paintwork' variety, the trip back involved plenty of ice cream and fruit stall stops. For dinner, takeaway food was had over coffee, tea and light beer at the Barnes accommodation. Tuesday was a going home day for many, with a choice for many to traverse the Pigroot, or Lindus Pass.
