Hi Fellow Members, Well the year has certainly got it’s foot down, March and early autumn already, with a lot of club activity ahead of us . I’ve just completed my 4th stint as support driver for the Central South Island Charity Bike Ride, It gives one the chance to get a detailed look at the country side travelling slowly behind the groups as “tail end Charlie”. Excellent weather on the trip this year. This years Chairman’s Rally took us to Kakanui the long way or lunch & on to Herbert to view a collection of cars ,motorcycles & memorabilia owned by Gary Ford. I was very pleased with the positive feed back from the 25 participants. Answers to questions are as follows 1—Mud Fish, 2—Alpacas, -3---Otaio School, 4—Tomato sauce/ , 5—Maize, 6—Haybailer, 7—Gary Rooney, 8—First Steeple Chase in NZ, 9—Standard 8, 10—1952/54. We know that 3 people got the correct Looking forward, We have the Open Day Feb 27th, Motorbike Rally March 7th Mid Island Rally March 14th Rock & Hop March 21st ( Entries have closed off )

An annual pilgrimage for vintage machinery enthusiasts and vintage vehicle owners is to the above event in Southland held every year at this time. This years event featured Australian built vehicles, the display area being full of Holdens of all era’s, fords covering Falcon Penny and Clive watching the Parade on Fairlanes etc showcasing all the Friday evening Australian built From the back of their ute. It was cold. variants. Several Australian manufacturers produced wellside pickups on their car or light truck models, these were exclusive to Australia, one was on show at Edendale, Gavin Ladbrooks 1958 Ford Mainline model shown here, these utes were based on the Ford Customline car chassis. Other companies that produced these over the 1940s and 1950s were Chev Dodge and International among others.
The featured make for the machinery exhibit this year was Allis Chalmers6 of which there was a large range of their wheel tractors, crawlers and associated machinery made by Allis Chalmers. One of our members Alan Averis and his family are Allis enthusiants and bought 3 tractors down for display, a great effort, Alan and daughter Linda and son-in-law Gerald Taylor are seen
here driving them in the tractor parade. The Edendale Crank Up is certainly an interesting event with always something going on for everyone and quite a few Sth Canterbury folk were attending.

Notes from the Library

I haven’t seen much of the Library this month but have sorted out those duplicated Antique Automobile magazines, featuring vehicle marque and other histories and they are now on a separate shelf where a recently compiled index with over 70 entries will be associated, to make it easy to find those articles. The remaining duplicate mags are available for members to take away and will be out on the table for next Club Night. At the recent Weekend Away I had a number of these sitting on the coffee table in the holiday home where we were staying and they were well perused. I have found in one issue an article on wood graining which I will rejig for publication and pass on to your Editors. I had a go doing this on the dash and door cappings of the Studebaker and think that I could have done a better job using the guidelines in this article. Having sorted these magazines, I have a quantity of duplicate Motor Sport mags with which I should probably do something similar. I should acknowledge that the Club has been donated a quantity of Turning Wheels magazine, the organ of the Studebaker Drivers Club. These came from the Estate of late member Owen Offen and has interesting content for Studebaker enthusiasts not members of the SDC. That includes me! I did join up when the Club started in the USA probably about 50 years ago but for reasons lost in the mists of time did not continue my membership and had dropped out by the time the NZ chapter was formed

With not having any income from this event last year due to Covid 19, we are needing to make a real effort this year to get our funds in, to keep our branch viable. It is part of our licence that we provide food if we open a bar. We have 320 members in our Branch, so it is very slack that people aren’t offering to do this small job. Everything is supplied, so come on, be fair. Its YOUR club. HELP US OUT. Its only 2 people, once a month, so if everyone offered, You wouldn’t be doing it very often. There is only one way to describe the above event, a brilliant touring rally on some very good Nth Otago roads. The day started of “rather murky” as we travelled down SH1 to Makikihi, turning left and traversing roads through Willowbridge, Studholme, Lower Hook area to Morven then on down a good road I didn’t know existed coming out in Glenavy village. Across the Waitaki Bridge then a fast run up from the Waitaki village to Papakaio then across into Horse Gully road through Airedale to Weston. This route turned into a “bit of a tussel” between myself

From Weston it was across SH1 then on down through market gardening territory to the lunch stop at Kakanui, a beautiful spot beside the beach at Kakanui river mouth. The afternoon run was a very nice drive south along the coast then inland coming out at the Mill House at Wainakarua, from there it was a short run on SH1 to our next visit at Herbert. This was a large collection of mostly Fords, rare Falcon models some American imports, a Cougar and a 1970s full size convertible very well displayed in a large barn, the owner also was busy on restoration work in his workshop. This was an interesting visit keeping most of us occupied for an hour or so. From here it was homewards at our leisure.

The weekend away, organised by Barry and Carla Barnes took place over Waitangi Weekend. For this year the trip was due north east, the end destination for 2021 being the bustling metropolis of Christchurch. Meeting up for the briefing were the following in a mix of old and moderns– The Barnes with their Peugeot 205 convertible, Norm and Anne Bunt in their Mazda Demio, Jim and Pat Geddes with their Holden Belmont, Ron and Lynley Hammer (for Saturday only) with their Triumph 2500S, Clive Merry and Penny Seyb with his 1939 Chevrolet, Keith Maxwell with his Toyota CHR, Les and Ros Wenlock with their Jaguar XJ40, Don and Heather Cameron with their MGB GT, and myself in my 'other car', a 2001 Ford Fairmont (yes Irving's, an AU). With a briefing, we were soon sent down Kellands Hill, and into airport and motor raceway country, Levels, with John and Marion Foster and their Daimler, and Alistair and Nola Day with their Hillman Super Minx meeting us 'along the track'. Reaching Geraldine at morning tea time, it was a picnic beside the domain, encountering older Rolls Royces on a road trip of their own, and 'spending up large' at the adjacent Saturday morning craft stalls. When headed north from Geraldine we were greeted with the sight of earthmoving machinery outside a yet to be opened museum, before headed across the 'bottleneck' Orari Bridge.

With a trip down to SH1, and over the Rangitata it was soon a traverse of the criss-cross of Ashburton regional side roads near Ealing, before Tinwald. While this author made a visit into KFC for an early lunch, it was a grand tour of the new industrial area before being headed north to Rakaia, and over the bridge, and north east towards Leeston, where Clive Merry was soon spotted buying up antique chairs, easily swallowed by his Chevrolet. Passing half a Boeing 727, we headed further north towards Lincoln and Prebbleton, where nearby was our first major visit, the Drury vehicle collection and pipe organ at “Knightsbank”. With picnics within a memorabilia filled warehouse in amongst over 40 stunning vehicles of many eras – a fair few Jaguars and Rileys, with Rolls Royces, Lotus, Aston Martin and Buicks amongst others for good measure – there were vehicles to keep the interest of everyone – for myself it was a Ford Escort just like my own. In a side garage were a number of vintage restoration projects, all in the process of being assembled. While the cars were all centre pieces, the big centerpiece was the 'king of instruments', the Drury Pipe organ, admirably played at full throttle on the day by special guest, blind Christchurch musician Richard Hore. For the late afternoon it was accommodation unpacking for most, for myself a 'compulsory' visit to my sister Kate living nearby at Wigram. The evening dinner took place at the Hornby Working Men's Club, a large new multipurpose space adjacent to Hornby Mall, Nola Day's newly acquired membership card working over time to book us all in.
For the Sunday meetup, all met near the accommodation of the Barnes', Bunt's, Wenlocks and myself near Roydvale Avenue. With a trip along the new northwest motorway system and across the Waimakariri, it was out to Ohoka to Wilsons Mill Gardens, home

While the gardens alone could enthrall us for the day, a few of us took time after our picnic lunch under the trees to explore the Kaiapoi area, though for myself and Ford Fairmont, an exploration of Christchurch's new northern motorway system, ending up at the Palms, where amongst various shoppers I encountered Alistair Day on his first visit there.

The evening dinner was held at the Barnes' accommodation just off Roydvale Avenue, and curiously located on the site of what was Lake Bryndwr. There were plenty of stories and food to be had, no-one going away hungry. Being a long weekend, a number of us stayed Monday, with a return visit to Hornby Working Men's club for breakfast and joined by the Barnes' daughter Robyn, and a trip to the old Halswell Quarry, now a nature reserve. The sheer extent of the quarry enthralled many of us with its overall size. Headed east skirting the Cashmere hills, with the leader of the pack giving us an impromptu 'world tour of Woolston' it was to the Ferrymead Heritage Park, where trips on the Vulcan Railcar and ex-Brisbane tram enthralled many of us. Although it was a public holiday, we had a full run of the park, the few people there making it feel as if we had booked out the entire venue.
With the sun being a scorcher, it was soon a trip back west for many of 18 us – for myself a trip into the Port Hills and down to Sumner first – before a Monday night get together at the Barnes' accommodation – Tuesday being the going home day for most. We have been fortunate to have the services of the two electrical Barrys in our team to upgrade the wiring to the new tyre machine so it can be used in conjunction with the compressor without causing any overloading issues. I would like to thank them for their efforts. This month has been a little quieter sales and attendance-wise so now is a good opportunity to pay us a visit in the hope we can help you track down that elusive part you need.
