Hi Fellow Enthusiast’s . Looking back , we have had a successful February with Barry Barnes weekend away which was well attended , Several members attended the Waimate Branch Wallaby Run ,well done to Lex Westoby for bringing home the silverware. The annual Chairman’s Run was held on Sunday Feb 23rd. A total of 30 cars participating. A BIG thanks to members, Ken and Carolyn Cross for hosting us at their property at Hazelburn. I hope that those who scrambled down the Gully to view the Maori Rock drawings found the exercise worth while. I did. Looking forward we have the Motorcycle Rally on March 1 st and the Mid Island Rally on March 8th. Entry is FREE for Branch members I have arranged for new Mid Island Prize Certificate ‘s to be printed with photo’s of the various trophy’s on them, similar to those done for the Mt Cook rally. The swap meet is coming up on April 4th please let Gavin Munro your availability for gate Duty Not much to report from my workshop, working on getting the trafficators functioning on The Morris 8, WOF imminent !! In between working on the many magazines recently donated, I have helped members with queries including finding a factory publication in our technical archives to assist with dealing with a brake servo for an Aston Martin and hunting out photos taken by Don Oddie in the mid 1950s to hopefully assist meticulous research being carried out by respected Veteran Car Club of NZ Historian, Alan Meredith, who like myself started his VCC life in Invercargill more than 50 years ago. I am eagerly looking forward to getting a copy of his recent book on Pioneer Motoring in Southland the first small print of which sold out quickly. I may not be able to help every time and its harder to locate stuff than asking Mr Google but please members if you are looking for some info don’t hesitate to see me on a Club Night or Wednesday morning and I will see what we can find. Regarding the magazines, there are too many duplicates sitting out in the Club Rooms and the plan is to take most of them out to the Swap Meet and make them available there free, so if you are interested grab some now before that happens. TAKE AS MANY AS YOU LIKE! I will also be taking to the Swap Meet duplicate books manuals etc for which I would still hope to obtain a modest sum each. Recently, Bruce Brown showed up with an early photo of 2 very early cars outside a car dealers premises. It was a photo reproduced from Timaru Museum archives and purported to show a Humber and a Swift in Timaru in 1903. In fact the date is thought to be 1905 and the cars are a Humberette and a 6hp De Dion Bouton. The cars are parked outside the Christchurch premises of Adams Ltd who were agents for Humber and Swift at the time (later Studebaker among others) and the cars and crew were heading for a duck shooting session at Lake Ellesmere. The shotguns are clearly visible in the photo. Both cars were driven by members of the Adams family. Before you marvel at my vast knowledge, the Library also has a copy of the same photo with all the above recorded on the reverse!
The Veteran Car Club of New Zealand is acknowledged as the source of 7 the correction and my bet would be that Alan Meredith was party to getting the correct information. The moral of the story is that history cannot be assumed at face value. At the recent Weekend Away I took a bag full of magazines from the Library which were well perused both by the residents of our rented holiday home and other participants who came around on Friday and Saturday night. Feel free to do the same if you are heading away for a few days. During our visit to the North Otago Branch Club Rooms, I took a quick look around their Library which is very small compared to ours but still has a good display of material. We are lucky to have a resource room which is such an expansive facility and includes space for display of motoring artifacts.

The Chairman's Rally, organized by Ashley Milliken attracted over 25 vehicles of various ages, shapes and forms to our Redruth club rooms on February 23. Owing to the nature of the rally's destination, briefed in advance, a number of us opted for higher wheeled vehicles – either of the modern SUV, or the pre 1931 vintage variety. With tea and coffees in strong supply, we were headed away by mid morning, out via Fairview, Taiko and Totara Valley to reach the Cross property at Hazelburn. With a ford – water measured earlier that morning – and a concrete bridge wide enough for our vehicles though not for an anonymous tresspassing real estate agent's SUV, we were headed up an access route dug into the hill up onto the Cross property, and to a clearing on a ridge, where the remnants of the old Blackler family homestead (built from local limestone blocks in the 1880s and abandoned approx 1940s) was located. With a fair number of us finding parking spots around the homestead, picnic spots were found for all of us around a nearby transported ex-trucker's shed, now repurposed as 'getting away from it all' fully self-contained, complete with outdoor kitchen and separate facilities accommodation. Information about the property and the workings of the farm was given in an enlightened talk by owner, and keen Chrysler enthusiast Ken Cross. After a briefing, it was soon up into the higher parts of the Cross farm. Though a few utilized SUVs, there were a number of us who took their older vehicles up – no-one getting stuck halfway up. We stopped at the top of the hill, and saw sweeping vistas up into the western hills, across to Raincliff, a trial-bike competition on a neighbouring property, and down the Totara Valley to Seadown and the sea.
11 Traveling further down, we reached the historic Hazelburn Maori rock drawings. With a walk down a steep bank, said by a few to be an equivalent to a 'gym workout', a number of us reached the drawings, within a cave on a rocky ledge. Though protected by cages we had a clear view of certain drawings, one which appeared to be 'a large rat'. Workout finished, we were headed back down the hill, a number of us settled into afternoon tea before the trip back home down the valley.

BEHIND THE HEDGE Seen at a celebration of 110 years ownership by one family of a farm in Southland recently, this “Grand Old Lady� which was owned by the grandfather of the property. The 1919 Model T Ford has a very unusual coach body, apparently a follow on from the stage coach era. It has only one door each side centrally positioned for access to the front and rear seats. The Model T has been recently restored by a Southland VCC member.

16 Weekend Away – Waitangi Weekend by Shannon Stevenson An annual highlight for several of us is the Weekend Away, organized by Barry and Carla Barnes. Meeting outside the clubrooms on a unusually wintery Thursday Waitangi day were several of us, all in club-eligible vehicles – John and Sandra with their 1981 Mini; John and Marion Foster with their RollsRoyce Silver Spirit II; the Barnes' 1925 Studebaker; Norm and Anne Bunt with their 1965 MG 1100; Don and Heather Cameron and their 1977 MGB, Clive Merry and Penny Seyb in the 1928 Buick, Jim and Pat Geddes in the 1972 Holden HQ Belmont, Les and Ros Wenlock in their Riley 4/72, Keith and Dawn Maxwell in their 1962 Alvis, Ashburtonites Dave and Sue Cornelius in their 1962 Chevrolet, and myself with the Ford Escort. A talking point in uestion was Clive Merry's accommodation, a modern caravan hooked onto the Buick – pulling it 'no sweat'... At mid morning we were away, headed out through Otipua and Southburn, and down through St Andrews, Otaio and Makikihi regions, before headed west into Hunter and Waimate – with the lunch stop picnic under trees at Seddon Park. Taking a non direct route, the afternoon run took us to Morven, the Austin Don car collection being of note to a few of us, and down to Glenavy. Across the Waitaki, we were soon sent in the direction of Georgetown, and across the hills to Tokarahi, skirting the hills out the back of Ngapara and Windsor to reach Weston and Oamaru. The evening meal was held at the Oamaru Club's restaurant – reasonable prices for drinks and a 'you must be there' raffle of several thousand dollars meant a fair few locals were present.
17 For Friday morning, the North Otago VCC kindly opened up their clubrooms and parts shed for us. A great spread of food, teas and coffees were placed out, and a few of us were huddled around the old pot-belly, and in their resource room – this author most interested in the model vehicle collection. We liked the place to the point where it was also our lunch stop. A couple of North Otago members joined us for our afternoon run, our first stop the Oamaru Gardens, the glasshouses and bird aviary taking our interest –

Chevrolet briefly ran into mechanical issues – after assistance by several members, it was back in operative order. Traveling west of Weston, we were soon greeted with the sight of what was once one of North Otago's most dignified places, 'Elderslie', a farm and gardens originally established by Scots immigrant John Reid, his family and a large number of employees. While the Elderslie stately home, crafted from kauri burnt down in 1957, the remnants of the vast garden, and the stables remain – the stables the home of Dr Peter Rodwell, who gave us an enlightened tour of the gardens and what is now left, telling many stories of the Elderslie property. After Elderslie our run took us into Five Forks, and into Maheno, a refreshment stop for several members vehicles. Kakanui was soon reached, a few of us astounded with the rate of coastal erosion near the township.
The Friday evening get together took place at the accommodation shared18 by the Barnes', Bunt's, Wenlock's and myself, on Aln Street behind the St Patricks Basilica with a driveway almost rivalling Baldwin Street in the steepness stakes – though most members cars made it up. Many a story was had from the day, particularly when the Fosters Rolls-Royce required a few hands on deck onto polished paintwork to push off the steep grass bank onto the driveway. For Saturday, a fair few of us had a free day taking in the sights of Oamaru, the historic precinct taking the interest of many. Dinner that night were takeaways at the Aln Street accommodation, most of us crowded around the TV with the SuperRugby. It was due north on the Sunday, for myself a longer way home stopping at Riverstone, Oamaru Airport, Glenavy and Waimate – the final stop a dinner had with Barnes and Bunts, encountered randomly by chance at the newly rebuilt Hotel Waimate. The recent display and demonstration of Old Race Cars at this years’ Skope Race Meeting in February at Ruapuna was a big success and both the Canterbury Car Club and the Skope Committee have already indicated that they wish it to be repeated at next years’ event – bigger and better and we already have another three interesting cars lined-up. To help us with this project, the Banks Peninsular Branch of the VCC, wish to compile a free register of all such vehicles whatever their state of repair, restoration or condition, so that these ‘Old Race Cars’ are never lost or lose their identity. This documented information may also help owners to obtain history, knowledge and even valuable parts required to enable these race-cars to once more be active. It was very apparent from many enthusiasts and spectators at Februarys’ event that these old race cars create huge interest and are a vital part of the old car movement which needs to be resurrected and encouraged. So if you missed this years’ display, have such a car or know of some-one who has, please drop an email with the details to either of the contacts below and we will be pleased to include on the register. The club has received a kind donation of mainly Ford parts from Blair Maconie and on behalf of our members I thank him for his generosity. There is some veteran (possibly Dodge) stuff including a mint wood and alloy steering wheel. Cortina and Zephyr mechanical bits also feature in the assortment Blair has gifted to us. The Wednesday Team have all but stripped the Morris Minor van mentioned in my last report and at this point there is a good chassis available to build a light truck on if anyone is interested. We look forward to receiving visitors between 9 and 12 on Wednesday mornings and will do our best to assist in finding parts needed. A sample is always a big help.
