4 SCVCC Chairman’s Annual Report 2020 –21 Dear Fellow Members. It’s my pleasure to present this report, hopefully my last ! Not quite a year of 2 halves but two Covid level 2 impositions managed to put the kai bosh on some of our events , namely The All British Car Day & The Daffodil Rally for Cancer. The “Season” got underway with the Opening Run with Ashburton which was well attended . Subsequent rallies , Mt Cook, Mid Island, National Vintage only Rally, Post Vintage ---P80 rally were down on attendance compared to previous years or expectations. of the organisers. It is disappointing to see such low turnout of local members & disheartening for the organisers who try very hard to make these events interesting for the participants Other events such as the Continental day ,All American Day , Veteran, Vintage & Commercial Rally. Fairlie Parade, Ladies Rally, Away Run, Chairman’s Rally, Motorcycle Rally were supported to expectations. As Have been the Mid Week Runs. Alistair and Nola created The 3 day tour which was successfully held early December. The National Vintage only Rally held over Easter was initially developed by Alistair & Nola Day and successfully run by them ,an enjoyable event, hopefully another branch will take it up and run with it in the future .This was followed up by the Vintage and Veteran Tour also organised by the Day’s starting in Timaru a few days later. The things you can do when you’re retired Our Open Day on February 27th was a great success , a combination on timing, ,promotion by hoardings, fliers, advertising & social media exposure.(Thanks Oliver) This years Swap Meet went off very well thanks to Colin Johnstone & his committee of Nola Day, Michelle and Gavin Munro, Barry Smith, Alan Patrick, Lex Westoby ,Sandy McMillan. & willing band of helpers who ,helped set up and break down the event. I’m in awe. I would like on behalf of the members like to thank Shona and Bill Weir who are stepping down this year as editors of The Tri Car for their Stirling efforts in producing it over many years. Barry Barnes for not only keeping the Library in order ,BUT the hours & hours of work blending our existing constitution with the new National constitution template ., This was adopted at a Special General Meeting held in December, One of the provisions of the Constitution.is that no member hold the same office for more than 4 consecutive years except when there is no nomination from the floor then the retiring member may be re elected.
5 We are looking for Nominations for Chairman, vice chairman, Treasurer, Clubroom convenor, Club captain, Librarian, Tri Car Editor. Nola Day has carried out her role as Treasurer effectively as well as a myriad of other tasks. We all owe her a debt of gratitude I would like also to thank Pauline Young for stepping up to the role of Club Secretary , she is doing an excellent job. Clive & his team for their excellent management of the parts shed, I see great improvements on every visit. Shannon Stevenson has done an excellent job keeping the Club’s web Site up to date, it continues to go from strength to strength, Out of town VCC members make good use of it sourcing entry forms. Alistair Day has had a successful year as Clubrooms convenor organising stage one of the re roofing of the club rooms, The second stage in the next few months. I also would like to thank the committee members of, Oliver Irving, John Lester and Ross Parker for their attendance & input. The acceptance of getting your Tri Car on line has been good, we hope the hiccups with the labels for the mailed out copies will be sorted soon. This was probably a result of combination of new staff & computer system at head office. Changes in the world of banking will force our non “on line” members to come into the 21st century. and at least get a tablet so that they can do basic banking and pay their bills by direct credit,..and, view VCC communications on line My report would not be complete without acknowledging the Stirling efforts of Eric Robins in keeping the gardens up to scratch. In conclusion I would to encourage less active members to participate in some of the Club’s runs/rallies as passengers/navigators , as many cars have empty seats, Just contact the rally organiser to arrange this and have a good day out I have enjoyed the past year & look forward to assisting in the “Immediate Past Chairman’s role” Ashley Milliken Chairman

The 2020/21 year has been another steady one for the Library with many items donated and processed during the year. Donations came from several sources but one major donation came from Joan Paul with many books from Russell’s collection and a large number of older issues of Antique Automobile magazine the disposal of which has been covered extensively in the monthly Notes in the Tricar. Despite the generous area available in our Resource Room, there is a need to move on duplicated items and members have benefitted by being able to help themselves to the stuff put out in the Club Rooms. This material is regularly added to as donated items are processed. Surplus books and manuals are taken to Swap Meets and a modest amount is generated that helps cover running costs of stationery etc. There is always a supply of these in the Library available for purchase so members are encouraged to check out what we have whenever a new treasure is acquired. Borrowing has been steady with items being taken out and brought back each Club Night. A thank you to borrowers who have been returning items regularly without need for prompting. Items for placement in the display cases continue to trickle in and what we have there is often greeted with surprise by visitors both from other Branches and guests on Open Day The Library/Resource room is a valuable asset there for all members to use so I enjoin members to just browse around, maybe take a book or two out and make the most of what we have. Although I was unable to attend the Library on Club Night or Wednesday mornings I have been able to drop in on other days and check things out. Thanks to whoever donated the copies of very old Autocar and Motor magazines and also an early AA manual and road map book. They were in rough condition but contain a lot of very interesting material particularly the advertisements in the Motor Show editions. They have been attended to so that although fragile they can now be stored on the shelves. Thanks too to those who opened up on the last Club Night. Anyone wanting access on Wednesday mornings should talk to a committee member on the day.

It gives me great pleasure to present the Annual Report of the 35th Swapmeet. Following on from no Swapmeet last year and a large amount of non recoverable cost to a very successful one this year, as the balance sheet will show. The two evenings and two full days working bees were very well attended by members setting up for Saturdays Swapmeet. Swapmeet day was fine and sunny which drew a huge crowd of public along, possibly the largest crowd seen for six to eight years. Site sales were also excellent with approx. 330 sites sold. With the large crowd, car parking became very busy but the Winchester School Committee handled this in a very professional manner. A good team of members made the Sunday cleanup and all equipment stacked back in the containers within three hours to cap off a very successful event. Some very important points that members and the Committees need to be very mindful of: 1/ Set up costs which include ground hire, building hire, traffic management, toilets, advertising. 2/ Gate keepers, Gavin struggled to fill enough people (members) to do there one hour gate duty, with 320 members we should not have to consider contracting this out. 3/ Dogs: These a real problem to us, so I think we will have to take stronger policing of this problem. Overall this years swapmeet was a huge success and I would personally like to whole heartily thank all members who helped, and my committee for there huge input, time and commitment far and beyond the call of duty. Club Room Convenor Report. The bar takings have gone down a bit with all the Covid restrictions. However they are picking up again now which is pleasing to see. With having the Easter Rally, the Veteran Vintage Tour and really good takings from the " P " classes rally, things are looking good. Special thanks to Don Cameron (Raffles) Tony McGillen (Supper Roster ) for their achievements this year. Also thanks to Sandy McMillan and Bruce Brown for managing the bar duties. The Club rooms have had extensive renovations to the A frame, the first major renovations since the building was put in place. There are further renovations in the pipeline, with the rotting dormer windows being replaced and the rest of the roof being replaced with colour steel at the same time. This is dependent on supplies and weather. The gardens have been ably looked after by one of our older members Eric Robins. It is wonderful seeing so much colour to brighten our day when we arrive at the premises. Also thanks go to the wednesday team who keep the hedges/ shrubs cut and tidy. You will have noticed a new hand rail designed for purpose and powder coated to suit our building colour. Thanks to Neil Manchester for organising this. Our outside tap has been shifted to make it easier for people to water the garden at anytime. Their are more SC VCC club caps available, and also there is a supply of the VCC wings emblems in Brass or Nickle for our vehicles. I am pleased to present my 20/21 Annual Report of Parts Shed Activities.

There was nothing to report until June of 2020 due to Covid lock-down and we began limited attendance after that taking all traceability precautions via sign-in sheets and QR codes. Initiatives during the year included purchase of a diesel fan heater necessary to make the Parts Shed habitable during the winter months and the on -going costs of diesel purchases to run this. We also purchased a new tyre machine to separate rims and tyres that continue to be donated and need processing in order to free up indoor space and allow orderly storage. This necessitated a wiring upgrade and whilst doing this we took the opportunity to convert to low energy lighting which will result in lower power bills into the future. Parts Shed sales improved by $1400 over the previous financial year to $8700 but were still lower than 2 years ago due to Covid restraints. The Parts Shed takings continue to cover the annual clubrooms insurance bill. Expenses have doubled to $10700 this year due mainly to purchases of one-off capital items described above. We have completed this financial year with a $7000 surplus in our account, down $2K from a year ago, but look forward to a better financial year for 21/22 without all the trading constraints that Covid has presented us with. I will finish by nominating Nelson Bowden for our annual Parts Person support award. On behalf of the wider club membership I thank him for his regular attendance and assistance in identifying and processing the hundreds of parts we deal with on a weekly basis. An overcast mid May Sunday morning greeted us for our annual PV rally. With over 30 vehicles outside the clubroom and with the clubrooms nearing capacity, there was many a coffee or tea cup to keep the kitchen's volunteers busy. Organised by the Munro's, the run was expected to have a number of surprises, and it did not disappoint. With the Escort having a 'Sunday rest', it was a navigation spot for myself, and time trial duties with Ross Walkinshaw with his newly acquired red Triumph 2500S, itself a veteran of many local area car runs, Barry Lovegrove, Les Wenlock and Ron Hammer's names all appearing on its ownership papers. Headed away after 10, it was a 'whistle stop' tour of Timaru before headed out west into Hadlow, Ross and myself soon measuring entrants headed past in almost split second intervals on Hadlow Road. Headed into Taiko on top of the Rolling Ridges, it was a scenic trip into the Levels Valley and Sutherlands, before headed up into Hanging Rock and Kakahu. The lunchstop was Kennedy Park, where a number of the locals took a keen interest in the vehicles in the unseasonably warm t-shirt weather. Several of our members were armed with childrens' bouncy balls, though they had a purpose being for the field tests – an interesting spectacle seeing members throw them out their car windows. With a 'world trip of Raukapuka' after lunch, we were soon headed out the northern back blocks of Geraldine, along rarely travelled sideroads mostly as flat as a billiard table towards Woodbury – the newly opened cafe doing a roaring trade of coffees and icecream for weary motorists. Down into Pleasant Valley and headed towards the back streets of Orari, we soon found ourselves in the midst of 'dairy farm central', Clandeboye, before passing by the mostly BMC outdoor car collection near Milford, and out into the 'islands' – Orakipaoa Island Road. With a short trip through Temuka, it was out along the Levels Plain and towards Timaru, a few of us enthralled by the rail trail in progress. Headed through various side streets in Marchwiel and Waimataitai we soon reached Timaru's CBD, and Timaru's south. With a final detour through the gardens, most of us reached the clubrooms for the mid afternoon prizegiving, no-one going away hungry. Thanks to the Munro's and supporters for a great run. End Of Season Run The weather was great for the day with an interesting run planned by Neil out through Claremont, Taiko over into Totara Valley and from
Pleasant Point back across Doake road, down Rosewill then back to the clubrooms for lunch. The afternoon run was via Brassells Bridge and Pareora River road to Lex Westoby’s workshop where we inspected his amazing range of projects underway from Alvis’s to motorcycles, then it was back to clubrooms for afternoon tea. Thanks Neil and Lex for a most interesting and enjoyable day

HIGHLAND FLING – Taihape – Nth Island

Well it was a bonnie day as we headed north with the old Dodge on the trailer to as far as Picton. We were loaded with all the spares that we thought we might need, along with kilts and Bagpipes. Yes Gavin Ladbrook and John Campbell were on their way to the Highland Fling. Crossing Cook Strait was flat as a pancake, then on out of Wellington was good until we hit a traffic jam 1 ¼ hours at less than 2 mph, roadworks! Then a hole in the radiator from dam stones, so out with water and kept topping up the rest of the weekend. Tried stopping the leak with every way known to man and so ended up with ground pepper that blocked the tubes completely!! But in the meantime we had an excellent rally on some of the back roads and tracks around Taihape, some of those roads are so steep as the proverbial goats backside. Everything was organised very well right down to the 4x4’s to pull the ones without chains up the steep parts. Quite a lot of people got in the spirit of the Fling dressing up in the Scottish attire and some with bagpipes. John was in his element playing his bagpipes at full noise in the car as we arrived at pit stops to everyone’s enjoyment, also at any other opportunity that arose. The venue was a great one with atmosphere and good meals. I take my tam-oshanter off to the organisers for having a good well run rally. After the rally we carried on up to Turangi to stay at our backseat scotchman’s lake house for 2 nights and a darn good rest that was definitely needed. We shot down to Horopito to check out some parts and I found a parklight I was looking for.

Next day was to head back down the track homewards, radiator still leaking, so this when the pepper was put in and blocked the tubes completely so NO COOLING AT ALL !! So lucky our backseat scotchman Ron was in his modern car by now
so Dodge on the end of a rope all the way down to Sanson, believe me it’s a long way, after that it was on a trailer all the way back to Timaru. All and all we had a great time and a lot of fun with great mates so we are all geared up and looking forward to Irishmans, so if you have an old Vintage come and enjoy yourself on these runs. Ken Copeland who passed away recently was an active member in the club having joined back in 1992. He motored, together with his late wife, his immaculate Mark1 Zephyr convertible extensively on club rallies etc, his wife died in rather traumatic circumstances on a Mt Cook rally several years ago where she collapsed and didn’t recover. Ken was also one of the team at the parts shed until recent years.

I would like to thank new member Ange Broad for her kind donation of 5 new 15 inch cross-ply tyres. Although her late Grandfather's Super Snipe is now running radials the cross-plies sold readily as they would be ideal for use on trailers. We wish Ange many happy years motoring in her family car and look forward to seeing her on our runs. We continue to benefit from visits from members outside of our area on our Wednesday morning open days and I know they are happy with the treasures they purchase from our extensive stocks. Our open hours are 9 to 12 every Wednesday morning and we ask for cash payments for purchases now that cheques are no longer an option. Happy winter motoring. Regards. Clive Merry Parts Manager SCVCC —————————————— MID WEEK RUN – 13TH APRIL 2021 On a cool sunny day, fifteen cars left the clubroom heading up Beaconsfield Road, turning into Rockdale Road we travelled via Coonoor and Otipua Roads to Quarry Road and turned into the Scenic Reserve which looked very pretty with leaves of every colour on the trees and ground. Travelling through the reserve we turned right onto Claremont Road and then travelled down Gleniti/Springs Roads/Dobson Street/ Hunter Hills Drive and right into Pages Road then left onto Kellands Hill Road. Following onto Rolling Ridges Road we turned left at Levels Valley Road, right into Driscolls Road and left onto the Pleasant Point Highway.Turning at Mill Road we travelled via several roads to the SC Traction Engine Club for afternoon tea. Many took the opportunity to look around the various displays and buildings. Thank you Don for arranging an interesting run, venue and weather.
