ON A COOL OVERCAST DAY, 18 CARS DEPARTED THE CLUB ROOMS HEADING THROUGH THE FAIRVIEW/TAIKO AREAS, THEN ALONG SH8 TURNING INTO CLELAND ROAD, AND TRAVELLING THROUGH TOTARA VALLEY AND OPIHI AREAS BACK TO PLEASANT POINT. TURNING RIGHT AT DRISCOLL ROAD WE TRAVELLED BACK TO TIMARU AND ALL MET UP FOR AFTERNOON TEA AT CENTENNIAL PARK. AN INTERESTING RUN, STILL SOME COLOUR IN THE TREES, LOVELY VIEWS AND GREAT COUNTRYSIDE. —————————————-

Hi Everybody, It has been great to get the Club’s operations underway again, with a modest turnout at the noggin & natter and a good 29 car turnout on the Breakout Run on what turned out to be a warm day & everybody seemed to enjoy it. The Parts Shed has been well attended on Wednesday Morning. During the lockdown a lot of hard work went on behind the scenes on behalf of members. Firstly the aftermath of the cancelled Swap Meet had to be dealt with by Nola Day & Michelle Munro , dealing with site refunds & re bookings and Secondly the collating of members emails so that the Tri Car could be sent out was done by Nola who also printed off some hard copies for the “Techno Phobes”.A big thanks to content contributors & the Editors for getting it ready for publication at short notice. Other members of the committee chased up members email addresses so that the magazine could be distributed. I think all members owe them a debt of gratitude for their efforts. Even so I was VERY disappointed to hear some grizzles about how and when the Tricar was distributed . Good to see the new Rally Gear Storage unit completed .It is located on the left just inside the front door. It provides easy access to the signs & vests that were previously crammed under the stairs. A big thanks to Alistair for organising that.

Not much happened in the Library over March April and May but since level 2 and now level 1, things have been a bit more active. Ashley organized the purchase of more shelving through Timaru Auctions which has been put in place, after he made some modification to the feet. A wooden display case was part of the purchase and Ashley is making up a plinth to raise this to a better viewing height. The various models we have acquired will ultimately be accommodated therein and I hope to also have room to move some stuff from the other cases which are getting a bit crowded. In that context, some of the quite old plastic kitset models could do with some repair and repainting so if anyone is prepared to do that please get in touch. I also have a number of similar old kitset models myself from my pre VCC days (61 years ago!), that I would donate too if someone could repair and titivate them too. Other models members may have are welcomed as donations. The agricultural manuals received with a recent (relatively) donation from Anne Shanks have been passed on to Colin Johnstone for the Geraldine Vintage Machinery Museum. Many of the plethora of manuals etc ex Chris Chambers, Sam Hamilton and Anne Shanks have been processed but not yet all put away, but the shelves have been reorganized so all manuals will be on the south wall shelves while the technical books have been moved to the new shelving. Other shelves too, need reorganizing to cope with all the influx. Thanks to John Foster for donating an A4 sized copy of an early photo of one of Cecil Woods cars, and Ashley for a couple of recent donations including a manual of Fisher body components of the late vintage era. Finally, I was looking for our copy of Terry Wilson’s book “The Cars in My Life� but could not locate it, in an admittedly quick look. According to the record book all the members who have taken it out returned it in a timely manner (thank you) and there is no subsequent record of its issue. If someone has taken it out and overlooked returning it please do so ASAP. (All will be forgiven!) Barry Barnes, Librarian.

We’ve had some very pleasant late Autumn early Winter weather which gave us a very good day for the End of Season run resulting in a good number of members no doubt pleased to get out on a rally after a lack of events over the autumn due to lockdown. Club Captain Neil Manchester planned a very interesting route out through Holme Station, Southburn, Lyalldale then down to Makikihi and on up to the Hunter Hall for the lunch stop. Being a warm day everyone sat around the vehicles over lunch, no one being in a hurry to move on for the afternoon run which took us through some seldom used roads and interesting countryside north from Hunter then west up Woolshed Valley road nearly to Bluecliffs. Great views right out to sea were had from the ridge leading down into Esk Valley, from there it was back across Talbots Road via Brassells Bridge and Otipua back to the clubrooms. A great day out on our first VCC event after lockdown. Thanks Neil for a great run.
This end of season rally is also the Restoration run competing for the11 Restoration of the year award, however none were presented this year, although Lex Westoby had his newly restored 1929 Norton 500cc Motorcycle on display at the clubrooms prior to the rally , but not yet being road legal was not motored on the rally so was not yet eligible for the award. The criteria for the restoration of the year award is if a member has completed a restoration during the current club year and has participated on a club rally during the year they can nominate it to the committee for assessment. P.S. When this award was introduced a restoration had to be entered on the end of season restoration rally but being winter it was felt that it was not the nicest time of the year to motor a early veteran, vintage or motorcycle so now as long as the vehicle has been on a rally at some time during the current club year it is eligible.

Alvis Club in NZ turns 50

As vintage club members we all associated with one make of vehicle or other, and in most cases we also are a member of that one make club. In my case I have an Alvis car and so I am also a member of the Alvis owners club of New Zealand. The year 2019 was our clubs 50th, and the yearly get together was held in Cromwell. I travelled down on the Thursday via Kurow and through the Lindas Pass to get there. We all met in the lounge for pre dinner drinks, and had light nibbles, sign in and collected your rally pack. The weekend program was set out in a very nice rally booklet which gave us all our instructions for the weekend. Up early Friday and assemble in the car park for a briefing before departing on our run through to Arrowtown. We had a couple of planed stops at wineries for tours and tasting etc, then on to our lunch stop. The afternoon was free time before the evening meal back at a pre arranged venue. Saturday was the Rally proper where we had to travel a set route answering Questions etc as we travelled. Lunch was at the Warbirds Museum at Wanaka, where a light lunch was arranged, then on up the Crown range to the Whiskey Distillery for a tour and tasting, well worth the experience (6 different brews). They gave the drivers buckets to spit the brew into, Yea that worked! The trip further up the crown range and over the top was carried out with great care after that. Dinner that night was at another vineyard in the Cromwell Gorge, where we handed in our completed rally sheets. On Sunday we started the day with our cars being lined up for con-corse judging while we held our AGM in the hotel conference room. After morning tea we travelled to the Highland Park race track where we had laps of the track in our cars and lunch. The afternoon was taken up with field tests down in the old part of town and entertainment for the tourists, all great fun. The Dinner and prize giving was held in the Hotel that night with many stories and plenty of drink. The Alvis club has always been known for its love of food at the many brown Teas available. I was luck to come away with the Rally trophy and also the combined Rally, Field test trophies. I had made a batch of 50 year ordermants, and they were handed out to all the Alvis owners there. The next morning Monday was to be a free day or you could join the tour though to Glenorchy. We had a day exploring the Bannockburn area with its many walks and a very nice restaurant. Dinner that night was our own choice and so many of us got together in the mall at a great Asian Restraint. Tuesday was time to check out and begin our journey home, always a sad time as we don’t get together unless it is at the Alvis weekend.
15 to People had come from all over New Zealand from KeriKeri in the north, Invercargill in the south. We also had one couple come over from Queensland in Australia. I travelled home via Clyde and Ranfurly, then through the Danseys Pass to Duntroon, then down seven mile road to State highway 1, and on home. All up about 800 odd trouble free miles. That is until I backed the car into the garage and saw that I had snapped a front brake cable. Where had that happened? On the Lindas Pass, The Cromwell George, The Crown Range or going through the Danseys Pass, all scary places. That meant there were a few jobs to be done before the Alvis centenary Celebrations that were to take place in Blenheim in 2020, but alas were postboned due to the Covid 19 Problem. I will be going once we all get back to normal. The get together is normally in alternate Islands but Blenheim was central and a better choice than wellington. So I want to ask what does the car club that you are in do to keep its members in touch? And do you get together annually? What I want to know is do you do anything different? the idea being to get other ideas to try in our club.

16 SCVCC TRI CAR “Crunch” Time has come as to how we produce our newsletter. Why?, because of the unsustainable cost of printing and postage in the traditional hard copy form of close to $10000 per annum. Most VCC clubs and other organisations are now sending out newsletters on line. Our club is financially comfortable, thanks to the efforts over the years investing profits from the swap meets so as to insulate the club against a drop off income from swap meets. This is one of those years!, this year the club will be running on cash reserves as it takes about $10000 approx a year to operate, to cover insurance – power etc What about subs? Only $20 per member returns to our club the rest is used by NZVCC to operate, plus Beaded Wheels etc, also to be addressed this year is reroofing our clubrooms due to leaks and deteriorating woodwork, so it is essential financially, and has been moved by management committee that we continue to e mail the Tri Car out to members. (216 members are on E-Mail) Understandably there are members who do not have a computer, I Pad etc so will still require a mailed out newsletter, approx. sixty members, how is this to be managed financially, this is an issue to be addressed. 2021 Weekend Away 6/7/8/9 February Christchurch
Next year it is suggested we should take advantage of Waitangi Day holiday being the Monday with an extra day away for those who want to. I had thought of Sumner or Rangiora but the range of accommodations in both places is limited, so am looking to secure a “home base” holiday home in the general Christchurch area where other types of accommodation are readily available nearby. There are heaps of potential activities for the Sunday and Monday too, without having to travel too far. Still at the research stage yet and once finalized I will publicise the general itinerary in the Tricar. As usual no entry fee unless a proposed activity requires that. Instructions provided before-hand. Club eligible vehicles welcomed but not essential. Nothing is mandatory just a relaxed weekend. Once again I would hope to see some new faces among the regulars. All well tested over the years, all in one place in Temuka. ALSO, Front axles complete full set of rewooded 6 x 19” rims that have been primed, used tyres – maybe a tube or 2. Choice of Honeycomb Radiators, that look OK, but are untested. Motors, all dismantled for checking, 6 blocks, all parts to go with them – take your pick. Gearboxes, diffs, Reset springs, body parts of a coupe. To locate enough parts to complete ours we bought equivalent of 4 cars in pieces with the intention of building a coupe. I am restoring a 1966 Cortina Mk1 S/W, English assembled, 1500cc, bucket seats, requiring a front bumper and the hub for a sports steering wheel, maybe 2 front disc brake suspension legs with good shockies. Maybe other parts as I progress. Morris Minor, I have been racing, rolling, restoring these for years and have numerous parts around or I know where to find them, give me a call anytime.

The parts shed is now back in full swing with our regular Wed. morning sessions well attended. With the recent acquisition of a diesel-fired workshop heater we can offer a warm and convivial atmosphere for all visitors. We have plenty of tune-up parts available to ensure the old car will start on these cold winter mornings. I would like to acknowledge donations from Andy Tallet of a Morris Minor body shell which has subsequently been sold and more 37 Chev parts from Barry Mawhinny.
