Notes from the Library by Barry B After a relatively quiet start to the last month the Library has received a huge number of magazines to be processed. Many of these were the residue of a large lot that arrived at the start of the All British Day and were offered for peoples to help themselves to. There’s a variety of titles and once they have been checked out against what we already have the surplus will be placed out for members to again sift through and take home what they want. After that lot arrived, Wayne Austin showed up with several boxes of magazines again with a wide variety of titles NZ Classic Car, Classic and Sportscar, Classic and Thoroughbred Cars, Autosport, Sportscar World, to name a few. The same will apply. Once titles have been checked for omissions from our collections, duplications will be placed out for members. If members are aware of any group or organization that would appreciate receiving any of these please take them away! I am receiving a lot of NZ Classic Cars but there are only a very few gaps in our collection pre 2014 although more recent years are not quite so complete. I have actually compiled a list of what’s missing to aid in processing them more quickly. Anyone wanting to build up a collection of NZ Classic Car here’s an opportunity that includes a lot of early issues. Also received ex Dick Edwards were 3 Parts Manuals for Triumph 2000/2500. Thanks to Dick and Judy. I will be away in August and September but Committee Members will open Library on Club Nights and if required on Wednesday mornings. If you take anything out please make sure to record it in the book and also record returns and replace on the shelves. Thanks

As it was, this was Neil Manchester's stamping ground, and he knew the small Southburn township, after many years of events at the hall, could easily swallow up over 100 cars – which it did effectively, participants vehicles filling most spots on the roadside, and within the church grounds. While a fair number set up picnics in the noon day winter sun outside, taking advantage of the food truck outside, others chose the warmth of the hall – this hall being a great reminder of Southburn past, with regard to photographs and memorabilia along the walls, one of note a 1945 presentation recognizing war service to the Southburn Red Cross, signed by King George and daughter Elizabeth. With time spent looking through the cars and the Southburn township, prize giving and raffle-draws were held, a number of lucky punters going away armed with automotive accessories from the stage. Hi Everyone, Quite a lot has happened since my last report . The All British Day was successful but with fewer entries than previous years, possibly due to inclement weather further north. The run was enjoyed by the participants ,ending up at the Southburn Hall. The AGM went off smoothly , a BIG welcome to the new committee members, Pauline Young, Oliver Irving, Ross Parker, and Ross Walkinshaw. Thank you to all the other office bearers who agreed to put their names forward and stand again. John Campbell has stepped down from the committee after years of service to the Club in Various roles ,Thank you for your input Thank you Neil Manchester stepping in the role of Club Captain, Neil will be supported by Delwyn & Ross Luscombe with the administration of the major rallies . But I ask all members to assist Neil with running events if requested. The Clubrooms has had a new hot water cylinder installed after the 70’s original was found to be leaking, Thank you Alistair for sorting that. A new L.E.D floodlight has been installed at the front of the clubrooms after the original failed, and new L.E.D bulbs in carpeted area of the clubrooms .Thank you Barry Yates for your assistance Looking forward, we have the midweek run on July 11th , the Annual Quiz Night challenge with Ashburton on the August Noggin & Natter ,Thursday August 1st. Midweek Car run Thursday 13th June After a cloudy cool start 19 cars left the clubrooms & headed west through the Scenic & up out Kellands Hill, Rolling Ridges Rd & to Point then across to Seven Sisters Rd & up to Winchester where we were met at Barkers distribution centre by the Warehouse Manager Aaron McGrath & Club member Tony McGillen. We were given a short tour round the distribution center, which turned out to be a much longer tour as it was so interesting. Barkers make so many more products apart from jams & sauces! Just about every aisle in the supermarket will have something with Barkers products in it. With the sun shining we travelled down the drive to have afternoon tea by the river, & yes the sun disappeared.

Timaru All British Day – by Shannon Stevenson On Sunday June 2, our celebration of British motoring took place. Organized by by Neil Manchester and supporters, over 100 British cars infiltrated the Caroline Bay northern car park, for a day's sunny winter motoring. There were a wide array present, plenty of the various BMC and BL product, Vauxhall, Rootes and Ford. There were a few uncommon sights present, examples including an Aussie built Ford Zephyr Mk2 Ute, a Ford Mk4 Zodiac Estate, and the Westoby family's Alvis TA21. With the Luscombes busy on raffle duties, time was spent looking at various vehicles, and catching up with owners, a number of whom from outside the realms of South Canterbury. After a briefing from Ashley Milliken and the team, our British contingent hit the road at 10:30. Headed through the port, and out to Beaconsfield and Fairview, we were duly pointed west to Claremont's Whalebones corner, down into Taiko valley and out into Cave – the otherwise 7-day-a-week general store 'sleeping' that day due to the closed sign on the door. While there were groups traveling together, a number were at open road speeds. Headed out back of Cannington, we were soon past one of few rural South Canterbury schools left, and along Cliffs Road - the Escort finding itself briefly airborne at that point over a hump in the road, witnessed by a Jaguar driver. With Cannington traversed, it was over the Pareora Gorge, with the old dam deep in the valley below. It was after the gorge where one could select a route – a sealed route along Pareora River Road past the former Holme Station sale yards, or the gravel Frenchmans Gully route, meeting up at Gordons Valley Road, a long time stamping ground for the Elworthy family. Headed due south-west, we soon reached the old school at Bluecliffs, heading along Bluecliffs Road skirting the Otaio River to reach Talbots Road and Lyalldale. Past the old school, closed 1929, we headed up the valley, onto Caird Road, and down to our lunch stop, Southburn.

This year we are taking advantage of Waitangi Day getting close to the weekend with an extra day away for those who want to. Oamaru has a variety of accommodations available and we already have a holiday home booked to provide the host venue for our communal meal. Nothing else is set in stone but this is the rough itinerary: Thursday 6th: Meander down to Oamaru. Evening Meal at a pub or Club. Friday: Maybe meet for Brunch and a free day to checkout Oamaru CBD and historic area. Communal meal at our digs in the evening. Saturday: Some suggested touring and visits to places of interest. Maybe bring takeaways around on Saturday evening. Sunday: Head for home! As usual no entry fee. Instructions provided before hand . Club eligible vehicles welcomed but not essential. Nothing is mandatory just a relaxed weekend. Prospective participants are invited to register their interest. Not the best start to a weekend away for well known Timaru Judge Joanna Maze and her husband Jullien. Fueling up at Washdyke Jullien left the petrol cap sitting on top of the couples Light 15 Citroen’s spare wheel cover and is now on the lookout for a replacement cap. The Wolds area of the Mackenzie country necessitated a stop to change a flat tyre during which time the couple contemplated whether to carry on or return home and try again at a later date given the misfortunes they’d suffered and before a 3rd problem surfaced. Restoration Run – By Shannon Stevenson On the last Sunday morning of autumn, over 15 vehicles materialized for our Restoration run, the oldest the Baird's 1923 Overland, the youngest a 1981 Mini. Warmed up by teas and coffees, and the sun through our vehicles windows we were away by the mid morning. Headed out up into Fairview and out to Gleniti, it was soon a trip north down the Kellands Hill and onto the Levels flat. Headed through Temuka, we were in the direction of Orakipaoa Island, and past a diverse collection of vehicles, mostly BMC, appearing to be returning to earth. Out along the Milford-Clandeboye Road to dairy farm central, it was a trip out north-west in the direction of Orari, and across Coach Road and Tiplady Road to reach Pleasant Valley. With Woodbury encountered, it was a trip across the single-laned Orari bridge – making way for weary-eyed campervan driving tourists – towards the great lakes of Arundel, aka the Rangitata irrigation scheme. Heading up the hill from Arundel, we soon reached the lush greenery of Peel Forest, and slightly beyond the township to the picnic area – ground zero for the numerous walks criss-crossing the area – some 5 minutes, others several days. With midday sun overhead, it was a great time to catch up with others, and to check out the vehicles – Russell Dale's meticulously restored Indian motorcycle in particular gaining the attention of many. Caught up with Alistair Scarlett of Scarlett Engineering & Hydraulics in Twizel recently who tells me the Rover “Ute” which plied South Canterbury roads when the company was under his fathers ownership during the 1970’s is destined to be back on the road again soon. The Rover is part of an extensive collection of the marque Alistair owns is going to be presented in a tidied up & not over restored condition. Alistair is working closely with VTNZ’s Timaru manager Russell Burt who like many of the South Canterbury public well remember the car to ensure the Rover meets the condition of today’s re compliance standards.
Twizels Show & Shine attracted upwards of 120 cars spanning over 100 years, judging is a combination of Peoples Choice. & that of a Celebrity Guest whom trim the entries down to a Top Ten Making it into the Top 10 was this very attractive 1954 Chevrolet.

My 1975 P6B Rover V8 recently teamed up with a Twizel’s Karl Morgan’s 1955 Series 1 Land Rover to provide transport for Karl & his wife Karen at their wedding. The Vespa 150 Sportique of Karen’s from the 1960’s also featured prominently on the couples big day held at Lake Ruatanawha recently. A similar 1963 Vespa scooter was also this writers first mode of transport back in his high school days. Graham Pauley.
