Hi Fellow members, Happy New Year! Good riddance to 2021, Here’s hoping this next year will be a vast improvement but don’t hold your breath with “Omricon” lurking . Under orange of the Traffic light system and Vaccine passes ,there should be no reason why our scheduled events shouldn’t go ahead this year with the exception of the New Year’s Day Parade in Fairlie. The Club is organising an alternative outing , more info in this news letter. The Clubrooms re- roofing job is complete and looking good, the new skylights let more natural light into the hall than the old dormer windows. Despite having a health set back, Eric Robins is continuing with his valued work tending the clubroom gardens, Eric’s work is greatly appreciated. The Wednesday crew have de nailed quite a few lengths of dry, straight H3 treated 3x2 timber in good condition removed from the roof area during the re cladding. This is for sale . Contact Clive Merry. The NZ Buick enthusiast’s have been assisting “New” vintage owners with issues with their vintage cars and has raised the topic of why greenhorn’s shouldn’t buy them without some basic education on how to maintain & drive them. There is more to owning a vintage car than the wind in your hair ! Novices with no mechanical ability or knowledge should start with a Ford model A, Basic as a baby’s pram, reliable & unsophisticated. The VCC as a National Organisation needs to create a tutorial on the subject that could be viewed online.

Also a NZQA type course for mechanic’s on the subject of vintage cars as the club’s pool of knowledge is fast diminishing, where would our local members be without the likes of John Campbell, Alistair Day, Wayne Austin Bob Austin, Lex Westoby, John Lester to call on. On a personal basis, our mini has had it’s radiator cleaned out and a new timing chain fitted, not a job I will be too keen to repeat for a while. Now runs very sweetly. Look forward to catching up in the next few months. Ashley

PARTS SHED REPORT The last month has seen Parts Shed regulars kept busy with processing and de-nailing a quantity of tanalised roofing timber, some of which is now offered for sale to members on a first come, first served basis. Along with grounds maintenance and Xmas clubrooms decoration we have been processing a large quantity of various new filters and and new roller bearings up to 6 inches in diameter that have been kindly donated. We are currently rearranging and improving our shelving to have easy access to these when visitors are searching for specific items. May I conclude by thanking the Wednesday regulars for their efforts to assist our club during a difficult 2021, and I wish everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. The Parts Shed will be closed on Wednesday 29th December and will re-open for 2022 on Wednesday 5th January.

MORRIS 8 TOURER CLUB WEEKEND IN GERALDINE NOVEMBER 2021
{Precis from Tony McGillen’s contribution to the Morris 8 newsletter.) A number of members travelled down from Christchurch an stayed a Geraldine Motor Camp Thursday night enjoying a barbeque cooked by event organizer John Lester. They were joined on Friday Morning by a number of local Day visitors for the event . The group travelled to Pleasant Point visiting “Obsolete Iron” motors and then via country roads to Fairlie & The Pie Shop. All eating their lunch at the Fairlie Domain and then on to Raincliff and into Pioneer Park.

Made their way to Temuka for tea at The Jolly Potter. Saturday saw the group go on to Paul Robins Museum.Lunch at the Geraldine Farm Shop where they were entertained by the Geraldine Fiery Peak Morris Dancers and after lunch to view Roger Mahon’s Machinery collection. Later that evening gathered at The Crown Hotel for a meal and more socialising.

This month we gratefully acknowledge the kind a couple of videos and some other interesting items, The videos are Greg Normans 50 years of Holden and from Wheels magazine The Joy of Cars. This adds to a collection of well in excess of 50 DVDs and videos all of which are available for loan. The other items include a number of programmes for the Waimate 50 1959-66 and the Timaru Trophy Road Race 1967-72. Another interesting little item was labelled Domestic Electricity Waitaki Electric Power Board which enjoined readers to “Keep this book- its interesting! It will help you to understand and appreciate how simple safe and controllable Electricity really is!!” No date but illustrations of toasters, washing machines, radios and electric ranges suggest around 90 years old. The other one of interest was labelled “For all good things Enquire within” 10th edition and was apparently distributed to all Timaru households at a guess around 1950. It contained household hints, recipes etc. Advertisers were numerous with many unheard of in my time in Timaru, eg The Caroline Bacon Factory, Finlayson s for Furniture. Others remembered but no more, included John Edmond Ltd, Preens, Millers (Timaru) Ltd and A & T Burt Ltd. A firm called Timber Treatments Ltd, recommended full strength DDT treatment to control flies and borer with flies being regarded as serious risk in spreading Infantile Paralysis (Polio)! Hugh Mercer’s Golden Arrow Garage cnr Woollcombe and Barnard Streets recommended Exide batteries – a much safer recommendation than the one above. Hugh Mercer was the first Chairman of our Branch and restored a 1915 Model T Ford roadster which appeared at all the early events such as first Mt Cook Rally in 1956. It became an early acquisition for Len Southwards collection (Now the Southward Trust) where to this day it keeps company with the 1905 Darracq restored by Colin Westoby and later owned by Don Oddie. John Preen of Preens Ltd was also an early Club member and motored a mid vintage Bean Tourer, a rare car which subsequently went to Christchurch
Of all the businesses advertised the only ones still surviving under the 13 same name anyway are Betts Funeral Directors and Hallensteins. We have also been the grateful recipients of a lot of material ex Les Wenlock’s estate for which we send our thanks to Ros. A lot of this is more suited to the Traction Engine Club of which Les was also a valued member and staunch supporter, so those items will go to them. There were other items of interesting historical and trade related nature which I have passed on to the South Canterbury Museum. Of the books that remain one that took my fancy was a little number from 1908, Popular Mechanics Shop Notes – “Easy Ways to do Hard Things.” My style is more the other way around! Not a lot of car related items but some suggestions for patching and repair of tyres involving lots of glue leather, bits of other old tyres that would make a WOF inspectors hair stand on end. The duplicated magazines etc that had been sitting out in the Club Rooms for members to sort through and take away were put aside to make room for the Christmas Party. They had all been well picked over by members so rather than put them all out again I took the opportunity to take most of them to the Crow’s Nest who will will no doubt put them in to the recycling if they cannot dispose of them through their shop.

IDIOT SIGHTING 1 I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 note. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c. She said, 'you gave me too much money.' I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar coin back.' She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said 'We're sorry but we don't do that kind of thing.' The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change. Do not confuse the people at MacD's in Shepperton Vic. IDIOT SIGHTING 2: We had to have the garage door repaired. The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.. He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.' We haven't used that repairman since. Happened in Bankstown NSW.
IDIOT SIGHTING 3: I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbour call the local council to request the removal of the WOMBAT CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: 'Too many wombats are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.' Story from Bauple Qld

Les Wenlock June 9th 1938— August 15th 2021. A Memorial Service was held for Les on December 4th. Attended by family and invited guests. Les contributed greatly to the club since joining in February 1983 .A great number of vehicles passed through his hands over the years, always leaving better than they arrived. Les will always be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humour . Les is survived by wife Ros & daughter Nicky Cartwright He will be missed
