THANKYOU to Frances Irving for all she has done in getting the Tri-Cars out to everyone for many many years. Frances has resigned from our Club, and the committee had no choice but to accept her decision. Frances did a lot to help our Branch even before she became a member in her own right. She had been on the committee for many years, has been club room convenor in previous years, has served numerous teas and coffees to our rally entrants, and has been the go to person for behind the scenes, in assisting our club. Frances has been the person who has kept our records up to date to make it easier for the committee to find who is next due for their 25, 35, and 50 year memberships, and also kept us on track for who is to receive their 60 and 70 year certificates. A Happy New Year to all members and families We will be having a blob out family Christmas Day a& back to work Boxing Day.The joy of being a retailer in the Modern age. I have just returned from a short trip to Auckland to watch the first round of the super Yacht racing from the water. A touch of sunburn for my trouble.Gee those things are quick. Looking forward we have the New Years Day parade in Fairlie ,assemble behind the Museum from 1pm for a 2pm start. Michelle Munro has organised the ladies Rally ,,a good turnout will be nice.

Activity lately has centred around the donations made by Joan Paul and David Warlow. After merging Russell’s magazines into our collection, there is a large supply of duplicated Antique Automobile magazines, almost a complete set from 1962 to 1999. I have spoken with Don Muller, National Archivist, who advises he has recently invested in a huge computer file from the Antique Automobile Club of America which contains the content of all their magazines since 1936 which can be accessed by querying for example by make and model of vehicle etc. The upshot is that he does not require the magazines. He is also endeavouring to obtain indexes for other material. The message in all this is that if you are seeking detailed information that may have been published in various magazines over the years, email Don and I am sure he will do his best to find whatever Archives may hold. These surplus magazines will be available to members though I would like to see those issues that feature articles on vehicles similar to those owned by members, go to them, should they wish to have them. Some I have noted are: Chrysler 6, History of Durant, Dodge (Vintage) commercial cars and colour schemes, History of Darracq, History of Paige and Jewett plus a brief article on Graham Paige, Buick 8, numerous Ford articles. I shall not put these out in the first instance so if interested please contact me on a Wed. morning or Club Night. We have also received some every good books from Dave, in particular all his material on the Rollin marque. Dave had been gathering up parts to enable the restoration of a brougham bodied model thought to be the only survivor of this body type of what is a very rare car anyway. Although incomplete the car has gone to a new owner in Germany who is restoring it. I have also found an Antique Automobile article relating to Rollins which I will associate with these documents. Another interesting item is the book “Cars Around NZ” which contains some splendid if sometimes inaccurately captioned photos from the early days onward to 2008. Other items included 2 Mercedes Benz books, “Yank Tanks”, and “Big Wheels and Little Wheels” the story of Laurie Hartnett, prominent Australian motor industry pioneer and industrialist.

Veteran, Vintage & Commercial Car Run Sunday 22 November 2020
One veteran, eight vintage and three commercial vehicles met at the Club Rooms. This Run was organised by Don and Ruth Campbell. First car to be away by 1030 on a short run. Left Club Rooms onto Main Road, Beaconsfield Road to Otipua Village viewing a small gated community on the left where 73 residents reside. On to Holme Station Corner. The first Sheep Sale was held here in the yards on 11 February 1908 and then right onto Pareora River Road. Just before Craigmore Valley Road there is the remains of a limestone kiln (opposite Pareora Huts). Lime was burnt in small kilns near limestone deposits in South Canterbury from 1860-1880. The lime was used as fertiliser for agriculture and mortar for buildings. Then it was left onto Craigmore Valley Road, right onto Timaunga Road. Just opposite the Maungati Church Hall we had a short stop and took a stroll round the Peace Walk. Rongomaraeroa is a Cherry Tree walk that was established in 2009 in the memory of the late Peter Elworthy. While the land is privately owned, the public are welcome to look around. On leaving the Walk we headed back to Craigmore Valley Road where we had the choice of tar seal or shingle?? We turned right onto Middle Yards Road turning left into Patersons Road. This shingle road with great views of rolling country, picturesque little valleys was about 7 miles. Then left into Colliers Road, right onto Pareora River Road finally turning right into Cairds Road at the Southburn Hall for our lunch. The tar sealers arriving too. Thank you to Ruth and Don for an enjoyable afternoon. By the way the “Gated Community just happened to be the Otipua Cemetery� It was noted the youngest driver was 20 and the oldest was 90. Nola and Alister Day organised the 3 Day Tour, but since only the two Days went on tour, surely it should have been the 2 Day Tour? They should have taken one of their offspring to call it a 3 Day Tour. Personally I thought it should have been called a sh-t loads of shingle, cos that is what it was for those who chose the shingle route. Day 1 was Timaru to Cromwell. Near departure time the storm clouds were looming. The reason they were looming was because they were waiting for us to leave, then down it came. Found sunshine out by the Monavale Hall, so down with the top for the rest of the tour. Into Burkes Pass via the side road, up the Tekapo Canal, then to Omarama. Only one way through the Lindus to Cromwell so should be straight forward. WRONG!! Turn right at Phillips Rd and get totally disorientated (and dusty) to eventually come out at SH8A towards Wanaka. Arrived at Cromwell for fish and chip tea at their clubrooms and check the parts shed, then nighty night. Day 2 Cromwell to Dunedin. First job of the day was to wash the car, unfortunately that was a total waste of time, cos the Days had a wee bit more shingle in line for us, then a bit more and then a bit more! Headed off towards Omakau via various shingle roads. Around smoko time one instruction said left at tee, Devonshire Rd. Hoped this was a cryptic clue for Devonshire Tea, but no, not to be, still hungry. Lunch at Ranfurly, then find Patearoa. Instructions said head past Sanitorium, was expecting to see cereal boxes everywhere, but it was a large building used for a TB outbreak years ago. The clear crisp air was a good cure apparently, just how crisp? Some photos show snow at the end of the beds! One of the roads we were on that people talked about that night was Ramrock Rd - across the top of a ridge with brilliant views. Getting up and down involved a few corrugations ( and then some), a good test for how good your dentist attached your fillings. Central Dunedin for evening meal and accommodation. All the cars parked together outside in a corner car park looked impressive.

Day 3 Dunedin to Timaru Coastal route for the morning, Warrington, Seacliff and Karitane then Kakanui into Oamaru. This was probably the easiest of the 3 days, hooking a left at Glenavy to Waimate, then Back Line Rd etc to Timaru. Earliest car on the run was Neil Watt’s 24 Dodge with Lindsay Purvis as ballast, latest the Peugot of Barry and Carla Barnes. Got a bit blasÊ about the scenery, it was spectacular all of the way. Although the Days poached this run from a previous rally a few years ago, they still had to reorganise it for us, so well done Nola and Alistair.

GLIMPSE OF THE PAST
In the late 1980s and into 1991 the No8 Round Table service club organised a couple of 4wd mud plugs in a back gully on the WEIR FARM as a fundraiser. The number of the public entry was quite amazing and they weren’t disappointed with the action of all sorts of 4wd vehicles ploughing through a mud hole then climbing up the steep slope course.
