Hi Fellow Members What a great turnout on New Years Day, I watched the Parade for the first time as the Vauxhall was playing up , now sorted The “Cup” was awarded to Shona & Bill Weir for their magnificent 57 Chev Bel Air The Ladies Rally was different , challenging for some, I thoroughly enjoyed it travelling on roads that I have never been game to include in past rallies. Lots of activities looking forward, This month we have the away weekend, Feb 6-8th Chairman’s Run , Feb 21st Open Day Feb 27th March is all go, with The Motorcycle Rally, Mid Island Rally, Swap Meet followed closely by The Easter National Vintage Only Rally Please help Gavin Munro out with his Gate Keeping Roster for the Swap Meet Bob Austin will be doing an illustrated talk on the history of the Foundry at the February Noggin & Natter Should be very Interesting Glad to hear that Andy Tallet’s hip op went well & he is getting on OK See you on Feb 4th Ashley

Further to my comments last month about duplicated Antique Automobile magazines, some of the ones with vehicle marque histories featured have found homes, but before I make the magazines generally available to members. I would like to see more of those issues that feature articles on vehicles similar to those owned by members or of special interest to them, go to those members, should they wish to have them. Some still on hand are: Chrysler 6, Dodge (Vintage) commercial cars and colour schemes, Histories of Paige Jewett and Graham Paige, Corvette, Opel, Zundapp M/C , Saxon, Hudson. Reo, Morris, Lincoln, Packard etc. If interested please contact me on a Wed. morning or Club Night. I propose to collate remaining issues containing those historical articles and place those in the Library shelves with an index for easy reference. Once that’s done I shall put out the remainder for members. We have also received an extensive collection of Ford books from the family of Stewart Townsend which contains such Ford jewels as “Ford in NZ,” Clymer Ford T and A manuals, “How to Restore Your Model A “in 5 volumes, AA truck supplement and essentially about everything there is to know about the Model A. There are several copies of the book, “Right Hand Drive Ford Model A” by NZ author Les Pearson. It was quite expensive when new but the apparently unused spare copies will be available to any interested members for a somewhat lesser figure to be negotiated! All the Ford books will be stored in a separate section and our grateful thanks is extended to the Townsend family I would like to further thank Joan Paul for donating 3 scrapbooks compiled by Russell. Two of these relate to the 1965 “Haast” international Rally and the other one is an interesting compilation of 1990 advertising material that arrived on the farm.

On a mild early January morning, over 15 members vehicles, the majority over 45 years old, materialised outside the clubrooms for our annual Ladies Rally, organised for 2021 by Gavin and Michelle Munro. With teas and coffees consumed, and instructions handed out, we hit the road, travelling south – for myself a navigation spot with John and Marion Foster's 1976 Daimler. With the Munro's organising the route, it was guaranteed that we would be venturing off the beaten track, our first stop Scarborough Parade. Headed past Kingsdown Manor and out to Otipua and Brasells Bridge, it was towards Southburn, and down deserted scenic gravel roads into Bluecliffs and Esk Valley, before being headed further south into the Hunter region, travelling at various points along the gravel Back Line Road, and through a number of fords - of the water filled variety. Nearing Waimate, a few of us found ourselves turned left on Deep Creek Road, a gravel route with a road surface largely unaltered since before Pauline Young's 1930 Rugby Truck was built. With Waimate reached, it was a trip to the home of the Strawberry Fare, Seddon Square, just outside the 'hustle and bustle' of the Waimate CBD. It was at Seddon Square where the lunches, prepared by the men were unveiled, Michelle Munro going around carefully judging each.
11 of The afternoon run took us on a 'grand tour' of Waimate, with a number questions on the instruction sheet answered along the way, before a run north to Hook where a flag created a few discussions, criss-crossing various gravel roads to reach the back blocks of Otaio, before reaching Southburn, returning to Timaru via Brassells Bridge and Beaconsfield Road – Neil Manchester's 1962 Chevrolet Corvette encountered when approaching Timaru. After returning to the clubrooms, a great high tea was unveiled, complete with multistorey trays, for which no-one went away hungry. Thanks Gavin and Michelle for organising a great run. New Years days weather wasn’t promising with showers predicted, however the day turned out quite pleasant with the predicted change to showers holding off till 4pm. Our club showcased a very good selection of vehicles for the parade, the
Munros “showing up in force” with the Model AA truck, the 29 Chev tourer and the late Robert Bray’s Chev Charabance truck which due to fuel problems had to be towed in the parade by the Model AA (Ouch!)

Your editors received the Rosebowl cup for the recent restoration of our 57 Chev, Shona took part in receiving the trophy from Wayne Girvan (the Fairlie museum president,) as she was “quality control” for the restoration, as soon as I tried to “cut corners” I was pulled into line!, and yes it did happen a few times. An amusing entry was this Leyland P76 was a colour matching 44gal drum in the boot ,why? When these very good V/8 powered sedans were first built in Australia one of their advertising claims was that you could fit a 44gal drum in the boot, not sure wether the car would carry one full though! As usual a great day out with a enjoyable catch up with folk at the village park up after the parade.

NATIONAL VINTAGE EASTER RALY event. This is a National Event and the first ever VINTAGE only rally. The Rally Committee requires help for the Bar-BQue on the Friday lunch time, for supper the same evening, Morning tea on the Saturday, and morning tea on the Sunday. Parts Shed regulars have mostly returned from holidays and start 2021 with renewed enthusiasm. We wish Andy Tallet a speedy recovery from his recent hip operation and look forward to having him back on deck tomorrow.
We were the fortunate recipients of a collection of Model A parts kindly donated to our club by the family of Stuart Townshend of Morven. We extend our thanks to them and also to our own John Campbell who has had a clean out at home from which the Parts Shed has also benefited. We have sold several engine assemblies recently with another couple of potential sales pending. We welcome non-members and also members of other branches along to our regular Parts Shed openings on Wed. mornings from 9 to 12.
