Without a list to call on there will be No Bar at our noggins. its not a big job, everything is supplied. if everyone took a turn you would only get one turn in about 4 years. Somewhat belatedly, I would like to acknowledge the donation by Anne Lovegrove of a good number of books from late member Barry’s collection. As could be imagined most of these relate to motor sport in keeping with Barry’s keen interest in all things motoring. These have been placed in a separate collection, The Barry Lovegrove Collection and I imagine our motor sport enthusiasts will be keen to check them out. I have made some further inroads into the mountain of magazines donated to the Library in recent times, and have dealt with the material donated by the Estate of David Thomson. The Dave Thomson Collection has been set up to accommodate the books donated. There have been lots of copies on hand of the various weekly publications so popular 30 or 40 years ago of the type where you bought the first issue cheap and coughed up for the remaining numerous instalments. We are holding full sets of them and in most cases a full duplicate set so I have placed all the partial sets out on the table with surplus magazines for disposal. The series concerned are On Four Wheels, On The Road and The Car. I have already alerted one or two people that there are marque specific items in each issue and found the issue dealing with their marque of choice for them to take. They are quite informative and of course don’t date in that the content is still correct concerning the vehicles featured. I invite members to grab several copies to take away. The duplicated series in full are available to anyone who wants them, for a modest offer, along with duplicated books and manuals. The duplicate magazines placed out in the Club Rooms for members to sort through and take away, were also perused by some visitors on the Open Day and at least one person took away some Beaded Wheels. There are going to be more magazines out there yet before we are through! So keep checking them out and taking them away.
BEHIND THE HEDGE An interesting car to show up in the early 1970’s was the Datsun (Nissan) 2300 PERSONAL SIX model. This was the company’s effort to compete in the family six cylinder market against the favourites of the time Holden, Falcon, Vauxhall and Triumph. As seen by the badge the engine was a 2-3 litre light six coupled to a four speed ( I think ) gearbox. My parents were friends with farmers up the back of Pleasant Point who purchased one of these after owning an Austin Westminster 110. I think they got a bit of a shock!, although the Datsun was smooth to drive and way more economical than the big Austin, the Datsun did not take kindly to the gravel roads in the area and self destructed rather quickly. I can’t remember what the folk purchased after that but it was something a lot more rugged no doubt! Ed Bill

7 REMEMBER in August we have our annual Daffodil Car Rally of which each Vintage Car Club supports. I am again happy to start collecting gifts for prizes for our well looked for raffle. If you have fly buy points going spare or other points on cards, you might like to keep a watch on what is on offer and make a donation to our raffle prizes. I am also happy to receive cash donations to make purchases on websites I use as I can often get good deals throughout the year. So anytime from now until August I am happy to receive donations. thanks for reading this, Cancer is affecting more and more people each year and there will not be many families that are exempt. cheers Nola Day.

The Luscombes “made the distance� in their earlier Vauxhall Victor, not trusting their later model after their Vauxhall rally debacle to the Nth Island! P.S. I have since heard that they have solved the problem, a silt build up over the years in the fuel tank kept clogging the filter causing the fuel starvation issues.

Hi Fellow members, Well the year has kicked off with a rush . The New Years Day parade was very well attended ,a turnout to be proud of. The Ladies Rally was supported by 17 Vehicles. The recipient of the “pinny” this year was Bill Weir who had an outstandingly well presented lunch for Shona who seems to be on a roll as the Weir’s were spotted lunching out the next Sunday at a local Café. But seriously Guys I would like to see a better effort with the lunch from more participants next time. The Open day on Saturday Jan 18th was very well supported by our club members who presented their cars well, but sadly the low numbers of visitors was disappointing to say the least. There were lots of possible reasons but a later date may help when there is not so much on in the district. However the members present had a great chinwag . Looking forward , There is the invitation to attend the Orari Race Meeting on February 1st, Details elsewhere in the Tri Car The Weekend Away the following weekend ,Feb 6/7/8 Chairman’s Rally Feb 23rd I’m planning a country adventure, with magnificent views and lots of history,so you are welcome to bring your modern FWD if you have one so that you can explore beyond the lunch stop and may be able to take some extra passengers An indication of possible attendance would be appreciated ,just let me know at the N&N. FAIRLIE NEW YEAR PARADE A well supported and very well put together annual parade was put on at Fairlie on what was one of the most “erie” days any of us had experienced due to the smoke from the Australian bush fires drifting over giving everything an orange glow and cutting visibility to the point where one could barely see the hills west of Fairlie. However a great day was had by all who attended.
Thanks to the Millikens for putting together an enjoyable day.

Ashley included quite a “thorny” questionnaire on the morning route, knowing the area quite well I thought I had all the answers but no, John Squire took the honours for that. Congratulations John.

Member Grant Mitchell questioned your editors on taking advantage of free advertising with our Real Milk Timaru signage on the International in the parade but he was quick to volunteer his son Ryan to ride on board and endeavour to get some milk from the cow en route, great value, he caused some laughs! Many thanks Ryan. The Bikie “Barnes” leaving on Ladies Rally, I don’t think Barry would trust Carla to handle the big Suzuki! So Barry was at the helm!

LADIES RALLY This was held on a very pleasant day in January with a very interesting morning run out to Holme Station up Gordons Valley then back down Blue Cliffs road, Talbots road, Brassells Bridge through Adair then ending up at the Botanic Gardens for the lunch stop which was a very pleasant setting. Your editor was awarded the annual :Pinny” award that

The afternoon was a visit to the museum where the history of the Basilica in Craigie avenue was featured with some large early photos of Timaru were displayed taken from the tower, my how the views have changed from the early 1900s till now.
