We are all pleased it has a new home and look forward to seeing it up and running again in due course. The Wednesday Team have returned rejuvenated after the holiday break and are keen to take on new projects while continuing with the dis-assembly and identification of useful items we have in stock. We are grateful for these and wish to pass our thanks on to the kind donors who think of our club. Ash Palmer in particular has donated air and fuel filters along with other redundant parts, so now is a good time to come in on Wednesday mornings and obtain what you require for your current project. Things have been a little quiet over the holiday season especially with two of our usual Wednesday “Dad’s Army” sessions not being held due to the proximity of the Statutory Holidays. Processing of donated items is up to date. I was able to locate some manuals for Norm Bunt to peruse and copy to assist with the restoration of his recently acquired 1938 Morris 12 but the main task undertaken has been to copy two hundred old slides on to computer files (saved on a memory stick as well). These covered cars and motor bikes on the 1965 “Haast” International Rally mostly at the hillclimb held at Clelands Hill near Cave( 100 slides) while the other 100 were of very early events, Dunedin - Brighton and Southland’s Riverton Rally taken in the —————————————-
Talbot Tour of NZ
There about 20 vehicles on tour , mainly 1930’s vintage with 11 Talbots, 3 Sunbeams and a Speed 25 Alvis coming in from U.K. and Europe and travelling through South Canterbury on 3—4 March, staying overnight in Twizel. 1930– 2018 It is that little dash between these dates that’s sets our Tess apart from all others. Tess enjoyed life to the full and I am happy to have shared some of that time with her. I feel honoured and priveledged to be asked by the family to speak at this celebration of Tess’s life. Both as a Vintage Car Club representative, and as a friend and a fellow ralliest. I first met Eric and Tess through the S C Vintage Car Club many years ago. They were everything I thought a club would and should be. Friendly, happy, encouraging , enjoyable to be with, happy to share stories with, delightful to motor with, but most of all fun. And that Fun came with a huge capital F. Tess has only been a Vintage Car Club member in her own right since 2004, but she has been involved for many years prior to that. Eric has clocked up just over 60 years and has had Tess beside him all the way. They are a magnificent loving couple, and Alistair and I have spent many enjoyable and memorable moments, and miles, travelling with them. To say a laugh a day is good medicine is an understatement with these two. Eric was always the quiet one, and never put Tess down or told her to be quiet if he thought things were getting too raucous. He would smile in his quiet unassuming way, and let her carry on. Tho I have to say that Tess recently told me that Eric has “found” his voice, so to speak, since coming into town to live.

We have had so many laughs with them over the years I could go on and on with stories that have been retold over many rallying days, but alas I am to keep it short, and straight to the point. ( those are Tess’s instructions to the family might I add) Well. What a difference 3 weeks can make. At our Vintage Car Club Christmas Dinner at our club rooms on 1st December, Tess handed me a little box with a handwritten note with it, as something she wanted to present to our club as a part of memories from the past. I read the information she had written out, at the Dinner for her. Rest assured Tess, your little pair of Gumboots are getting their presentation case made and, along with appropriate wording will be on display in our clubrooms forever, now in your memory. Who ever would have thought your end would be so near when you handed them over. I saw you in ED the night you were admitted into hospital, and we were joking away like it was a normal place to meet and the normal thing to be doing, and certainly not like we were in a hospital, supposedly needing great care and attention. You said you’d had a gin before you came into hospital, and you hoped that that wouldn’t stuff up any of the tests they might have planned for you. Little did we know how soon your world would collapse around you and all your family. You were so brave to make the decision about your health care, to decide what you did, and to have the loving support of your family in that decision must not have been easy for them or you. (and I’m not sure I could have been that brave ) I will always admire your courage in your decision. You chose to stay in Timaru and not be shipped up to Christchurch (your words again) where you knew no-one. You loved people, and people loved you. You wanted to see and talk to as many people as you could. This you achieved as you had wanted. Tess and Eric have endured a lot during their married life. Some things that happen tear people and families apart. But with Tess and Eric it only strengthened the amazing bonds they had. Sitting in the Hospice on Wednesday with Eric and Tess, Tess’s foot was sticking out from under the blanket. Eric gave your toes a flick Tess, and the admiration and love from that one little flick was worth a million words. Your love for each other was so evident in all aspects. It is rare to see that affection displayed so lovingly.
The Luscombe’s showed up with this original immaculate Vauxhall Viva at the New Years parade at Fairlie . On further enquiries it appears that it won the premium award at the National Vauxhall Rally at Greymouth See below

An icon of World War 2 the GMC military version 4x4 or 6x4 four wheel drive or 6 wheel drive. These trucks mobilised armies in all spheres of WW2. However what was just as important to us in NZ was the utilisation of these versatile vehicles in civilian use after the war. G T Gillies of Oamaru tendered to the NZ Stores Board for surplus army stock stored at Trentham, hundreds of them returned from the Pacific, plus containers of spares. Gillies prepared them for civilian use and onsold them to logging operators, fertiliser spreader operators you name it. There was a huge demand due to the shortage of trucks available in the post war era. They were powered by the GM 6 cyl petrol of a larger cubic inch than the Chev 6 at the time and were a full pressure fed oil system. The carburettor was wide open with jets the size of 3inch nails, but that didn’t worry the army and in civilian use in those days petrol was cheap. These trucks served operators extremely well, although were only fitted with 5 ton capacity differentials which gave out quite regular under NZ off road conditions, however Gillies had ample spares to keep them all going. 7 I will treasure that moment forever. Alistair and I saw you on the Friday night before we went to the very wet Pleasant Point Christmas Parade. Your instructions to us were to make sure we took lots of photos for you. We kept our bargain, but sadly you didn’t, and you never got to see any of the photos. Being a “ Pleasant Pointer” was a proud moment in time for you. Lots more stories from those days can be told by others later maybe. Many a night we have joined together for a meal at Pleasant Point, or at our place in Timaru. These were always enjoyable nights, even tho Eric used to say time stood still at our place. (but that was just because the clock he watched didn’t go, and the time on it never changed ) Tess, You were always the light and soul of any night out we had. We will miss that hilarity. Your humour is humbling.When we left you on the Friday night at Hospice Tess, we gave each other a kiss and you thanked me for being your friend, and told me how you valued our friendship and honesty. Well that goes two fold Tess. We will all miss you. Eric you have a wide network to call upon, but we can only go half way. Call upon your friends as much as you want or need. I know your family will be of great comfort and support to you, but they too are suffering. We feel the V C C are all your extended family but we can only help if we know what you would like or need, a hug, a kiss, or even just somewhere different to sit and blob out. And now Tessy Bear, we say goodbye to you. As you travel thru the Pearly Gate, I know that you will be sitting on your cloud, waiting with your brilliant smile, ready to welcome the rest of us as it becomes our turn to head towards that same Pearly Gate. You said to me at another celebration of life once, that you wondered if anybody would make the effort to come when it was your turn to click your clogs. (again your saying) You would be humbled to see how many family, friends and car rally enthusists are here. You were one in a million . You deserve your rest now Tess. You fought the good fight with courage and determination. You won’t be forgotten. I will miss you Tess. Rest in Peace.

Hi fellow Members , Whew ,where has January gone ? Lots happening, The Annual New Years Day parade was well attended thank you but spectator numbers seemed down on last year. I had a near disaster with the Buick during the Parade when the leather fan belt let go & the temperature gauge went through the roof, I pulled out and was able to fit a spare ,a quick trip down to the Opihi Gorge Rd Corner & back got the temperature down to normal . I was very pleased with the turnout of members and their cars for the Open Day, well done everybody. A good number of members of the public too’ A big thanks to John Foster’s brother in law, Murray White for his assistance on the barbeque along with Neil Manchester. Norm Bunt assisted the Teas & Coffee’s
The forthcoming Chairman’s Rally on February will finish up at an interesting venue with things of interest or most people, see advert elsewhere in the Tri Car. Planning is well underway for the Mid Island Rally on March 10th which will culminate with an evening meal at the Gleniti Golf Club, even if you can’t go on the Rally you could come & join us as we are making 50yr badge presentation’s. Details in the rally entry form. Exterior wall painting has been completed on the south wall of the club rooms with just the white trim to do. Plans are in hand to do the emaining north wall soon. My sincere condolences to members who have lost love ones since our last Tri Car was published. See you at the next Noggin & Natter on February 7th Ashley
The next visit was further down Cannington to the old Wisely property.15 Sandy and Dennis Murray are the owners of the property. Sandy showed us around her amazing garden. Sandy has researched and built with amazing detail the main street of Cave as it was many many years ago. (way before my time) Model of Cave Township.
Cave Store to name a few. It was so interesting. Now that that project is finished she is working on building Hobbiton. Also in her workshop is a model railway that she has created and detail is incredible. Thank you to Sandy and Dennis for allowing us to view all the different projects.

A big thank you to Barry and Carla Barnes for putting together a great day of rallying and local history for the above event. After leaving the clubrooms a diverse route took us through Timaru, the Scenic Reserve and up Rosewill Valley to Pleasant Point then via Totara Valley to Cave village green for the lunch stop. Of additional interest on the morning run was a set of photographs taken of items along the route which were to identify, most were rather difficult but three participants succeeded in winning Michelle Munro, Lex Westoby (and he was on a motorbike!) and Ashley Milliken who won the bottle of wine via a ballot/. The afternoon run consisted of a “potted history” of the Cave Cannington area with a visit to St Davids church over the hill from Cave. This is a historical icon of Sth Canterbury presented by the Burnett family of Mt Cook station on 22nd November 1930. Some of its features is the fact that no nails are used and the pews are rough adzed beech with the backs and ends all pegged. It is possibly more iconic as editor Shona grew up neighbouring the church, went to Sunday school and bible class there, her parents were one of the first couples to be married there, Shona and I were married there as were two of our children!!

A very pleasant day greeted members who ventured up to Fairlie for the event, not too hot this year thankfully. A large crowd gathered at the Domain for a picnic lunch before lining up behind the museum for the parade start, a very diverse mix of vehicles tractors and machinery plus the Crossen traction engine manned by Daniel and steered by his sister was a big hit. The main street was lined with the largest crowd seen for some time.
