It is a once a month a task, during the last week of the month. You are suppled with the envelopes and printed name labels. The mags need to be folded in half and slipped into the envelopes, then posted. Not a very onerous task now there is only about 40 to post. It would mean the Printing people would contact you for collection once they are printed. They would need to be collected from Copy and Photo Centre in Church St, then put into the envelopes and posted. They can be put into the street posting box. You would be supplied with pre stamped envelopes, and the name labels would arrive to you from head office. PLEASE consider doing this small, but very necessary job for your branch. A very Merry Christmas to you all , it will be a good year to put behind us and 2021 shows promise with several Covid 19 vaccines on the horizon. The Club displays 2 QR code posters plus has sign in sheets in the parts shed and the Clubrooms. Get your younger family members to set it up on your phone, very easy to use. If your phone is too old ,then there is a great Christmas gift idea for the family . I see on the news that use may become compulsory. The Christmas dinner is going ahead with 52 participants at the time of writing & I’m sure we will have a great night. At the December Noggin & Natter we will convene ( Hopefully Short) Special General Meeting to adopt our updated Constitution which based on the Template provided by the National VCC Management Committee. Our document has been made possible by the efforts of Barry Barnes who has blended our existing document with the template and I know other branches are looking to see our document when adopted & approved by the National body. A good turn out on December 3rd will be greatly appreciated On a personal note, The Buick is temporally off the road with broken studs that hold the block to the crankcase & the Vauxhall has had its weeping petrol tank replaced with a sound item sourced from our parts shed. Will be good to give it a few outings not having been driven since February. NATIONAL VERO RALLY January 2022 in Taranaki, Whilst the registration forms are not available till March 2021, expressions of interest would be appreciated by the National Management Committee ,these could forwarded to National Office , contact details in the Beaded Wheels. It is still not too late to Join Alistair & Nola Day’s 3 day tour as long as you can arrange your accommodation, give Alistair a call. See you on December 3rd and don’t forget to give those cars a run even if its not on an organised event as we are blessed with some of the best old car motoring roads in NZ Merry Christmas Ashley

The last month has seen a great number of items donated by Nelson Bowden and Joan Paul. One charming little publication Nelson acquired somewhere along the way is entitled “Fathers First Car” and contains the recollections of one Hugh Tracy, the 11th child of Dr Henry Eugene Tracy, who was issued a driving licence by Devon County on 18 September 1907. Dr Tracy had just acquired a 2 cylinder chain driven 10-12hp Peugeot and confidently believed the predictions of the “smart and intelligent young fellow called Brane” who sold him the car “that he could see no reason why we should ever have a breakdown” according to the early entries in the good doctor’s journal on which the book is based. Alas, the journal confirms that did not prove to be the case and the joys and vicissitudes were all dutifully recorded, with the latter well out numbering the former. But the Doctor was smitten and in 1908 acquired company for “Bird” in the form of “Puffy” an 8hp Peugeot which became his pastoral calling car while Bird became the family vehicle. Despite it all by 1909, the Doctor and his transmogrified coachman now chauffeur had succeeded in learning not only how to drive but also maintain and repair their motoring charges. A small volume but delightful reading! Joan has kindly donated many of her late husband Russell’s books and magazines and among them there are now a number of very authoritative books on Renault and Hupmobile including one by Saint Loup entitled simply “Renault” which is the first book on old cars I ever read at about age 14! We are also the grateful recipients of a large quantity of magazines including Horseless Carriage Gazette and Antique Automobile magazine. Many of the latter will be duplicates and will be available to members. The early ones particularly contain well researched articles on many common and rare marques mostly American. Still fingers crossed no Covid interruptions will occur, and detailed planning is well advanced. We intend to visit an interesting property near Christchurch as our Saturday lunch stop and will visit a unique car collection and garden setting as part of Sunday activities. For those staying over Monday night too, or even deciding to leave for home later in the day, there is the option of a brunch followed by a visit to the Halswell Quarry and on to Ferrymead. Saturday night, a meal out and Sunday night communal meal at our digs, with a takeaway option there for Monday night too. The holiday home we have booked is just off Roydvale Avenue, so intending participants may wish to book accommodation in that vicinity which has several motels, being near the Airport. There are cover charges at the 2 collections referred to (which are passed on to Charity) so this year there will be an overall charge of $20 pp to cover the afore-mentioned charges, meal costs, and ancillary expenses. Delighted to have just had another couple come on board for the Weekend and any further interested participants are invited to register with me. Would love to welcome some of our newer folk. Although we have a regular group that takes part, it’s NOT a closed shop! Many members will be aware that it was an ambition of the late Russell Stevenson to acquire the featured car or as finally happened to rebuild a Darracq as close as possible to this one. The Mr C Stevenson referred to was Russell's uncle I believe and the lions share of Russell's ambition was achieved before his most untimely and unfortunate demise. Some club members have assisted Penny in working toward completion of this worthy tribute to two generations of Stevensons, which hopefully will one day be unveiled to members. Barry

CHRISTMAS PARADE 2019 2020 Parade in Timaru 6th December
10 2020 Mt Cook Rally – by Shannon Stevenson With months of planning by Ashley Milliken and supporters, with the looming issues of potential COVID related event calendar cancellations overhead, it was a sigh of relief with restrictions back at Level 1 for our annual 'head to the hills' at Labour Weekend. With 54 entrants having entered, it was outside the clubrooms at 9am Saturday with many of us running tea and coffee supplies dry. There were a variety of vehicles entered, the oldest the Binnie's 1913 Hupmobile, the youngest the Scott's 1986 Subaru Brumby. A special note must be made for the extended Jones family, for which eight vehicles were entered. With the first vehicles away at 10, it was a trip down through the back blocks of the Hunters Hills to reach Wallaby Country, Waimate. Queen Street had a more relaxed 'vibe' this time without the full throttle of Japanese Imports in full throttle – due to the annual 'Waimate 50' being cancelled – although a few of us found ourselves in the midst of the Museum's book sale. Headed through the gorge, it was a relaxed trip into Waikakihi Valley. It would continue that way for some with the trip into Ikawai – though for others the rugged Elephant Hill and Clarkefield Road's awaited. This route, commanding great views from the single lane track through a farm station, certainly was one where a motorist had to be in control of their vehicle at all times. One false move and it would have been a trip down into scrub many metres below. Luckily all who chose the route made it through, the Pidgeon Triumph TR2 in particular taking to the trip like a 'duck to water'. With the gravel in the rear vision mirror it was a trip into Kurow, and a well deserved late lunch and ice-cream stop for many, a fair few of us sheltered under the trees. It was in this area where Gerald and Lynda Taylor's 1946 International truck developed gasket issues, earning them the hard luck award. A trip back to Geraldine for his club-eligible 1983 Hino to pick up the stricken International, they made it to Twizel, though well after dark. For the rest of us headed west, Aviemore was reached with fair few campers settled in for the summer, before heading up into glider country, Omarama, and onto Twizel by late afternoon.

Field tests took place on an overcast Sunday outside the A-frame Chalets, quiz questions and the Jim Geddes horn test challenging many. For myself, this was a hitch-hike in the back seat of Dave Cornelius' 1952 Chevrolet, this Ford enthusiast's Escort Friday night, a Falcon used for the trip up instead. Headed past a few intrepid athletes, it was along the canals and onto the Mt Cook Road, the recent wildfires showing a changed landscape. Without the rental cars and campers the trip felt quicker, and the lack of tourists was noticeable when Mt Cook Village was reached. What had also changed by Mt Cook was the weather, with torrential downpours going sideways, most of us soon huddling in the Hermitage foyer, before lunch – for some at the cafe, and for others a great roast at the estaurant. The wild weather stayed with us for the trip back, my afternoon travels with the Taylor's Hino. For a change of scenery, the evening presentations and dinner were held at the Twizel Events Centre – with many a great story told over the tables of the weekend. Monday was a going home day for many, a fair few of us eading back via Tekapo. Overall, an interesting rally – thanks Ashley, Neil and supporters. Shannon Stevenson

Despite concerns at the large number of events on throughout Sth Canterbury on at the weekend, (Chch show long weekend), we were very pleased at the support shown for the annual USA event. The Sat evening cruise had 45 vehicles participate on an interesting route through the centre of town, a drive around Patiti Point then out west of Timaru, across to Arowhenua where we were hosted by H Bomb restorations for a look at their projects and a BBQ provided by the S.C
Heart Kids team. The Sunday display day drew over a 100 vehicles in excellent weather with a large number of the public down for a look, consequently with the vehicle entry fee and public donations the SC Heart Kids group had a very good boost to their funds which they very much appreciated and thanks our club for the proceeds from the event as they do not receive any Govt funding for their work supporting families with children with heart defects. Many thanks to our team of helpers with marshalling, setting up etc and to SJ Allen Ltd our major sponsors for their invaluable assistance.

Summer Safari
This year the dates ran from Thurs. 5th. through to Mon.9th. Left Don Campbell's place at around 9.30am Thurs. morn.heading up Beaconsfield Rd through Otipua and meeting up with the Irving's at Holme Station Cnr. We continued on up Craigmore Valley past Maungati School veering right into Elder's Rd. onto Backline Rd. and arriving at Mt. Nimrod Reserve. With campsites all set up we then erected a shelter for sitting around the fire at night. It was hot all day but by evening the weather had set in and the rain started. Our fire was a 44gal. drum cut length wise and fitted with a B.B.Q plate covering half of the top which could be removed for full fire. This cleverly designed device was made by Wayne and was well utilised during our stay. Although the weather persisted over the days we were surprised to see several track walkers come into the reserve. It clearly is a popular place . And surprised is only one word that comes to mind when a group of track walkers came through the camp Leading three large Goats all wearing Hi. Viz. Vests.(the Goats that is, not the walkers) One of our campers'exclaimed, 'There Goes' the Vonn Trapp Family'! There were also two serious type walkers with all the climing/rock gear strapped around their waists that came through one day. On Sunday everyone packed up , all that is except 'stick' and myself. We had decided to tough it out one more night in the hope it would be fine in the morning so we could dry everything out and hopefully take down dry tents! As Les had left the camp bed he had occupied, in 'sticks' tent and was now vacant, I moved in!The theory being that it was more sensible to heat one tent with two gas heaters!! We were correct as the night sky cleared, the stars came out and it was COLD. Mon. morning bright and clear with sun out. Breakfast over we began the task of taking down camp, and around mid morning Wayne returned to pick up the fire drum which he had very kindly left for us for the previous night.

.The weather looking threatening again we had to pick up the tempo of decamping. As I had brought a trailer (covered) full of fire wood which was all burnt I now had an empty trailer to quickly stow semi drytent ,covers and sundry camping items without having to pack the car carefully. Leaving camp early afternoon we stopped at Maungati School Cnr.to have a coffee While there a very large tractor pulled up and the owner chatted with 'stick' about the history of his Chev Pickup as he was the Nephew of the original owner of the Truck. Continuing on from there we arrived home around 3pm. Camping with us over Safari were: 'Stick' Campbell '28Chev, Pickup Les Wenlock, '39 Chev. Master Wayne Irving, '29 Mod A Tourer Terrence Irving, '30 Mod A Sedan Ollie Irving, '92 Ford Fairlane Graeme Taylor, 'F' Series v/8 LandCruiser Barry Smith, '27 Erskine and Trailer Visiting us over the period were Darren Ladbrook and the boys, Cooper and Findlay who were dissapointed they couldn't stay. PARTS SHED The wednesday morning team have been sorting engine blocks that have been part of our stock for quite some time. We have managed to sell several of these and are stripping others so we can recycle the cast iron. This month I would like to acknowledge kind donations from members Nelson Bowden and Dave Warlow. I thank them for their kindness in making our club the beneficiary of these spare parts. We are having some success selling to club members from other regions as well as to non-members and I have been assured some of these buyers will join our club in due course once their particular vehicle is back on the road. We also had good sales to Vauxhall Club members over Labour Weekend and I thank Stick Campbell for conducting this business while most of us were away at Mt.
