Hi Fellow Members Hope you enjoyed the talk at the last N&N on Cape Kennedy & Mission control.Thank you Peter and Janet Russell for putting it together. The new rally season is fast approaching with The Cancer Run on August 23rd and the annual quiz night with Ashburton on Thursday August 20th at 7.30, Get your team together. Opening run with Ashburton Sunday Sept 6th. The Clubrooms are about to have roof repairs done which Alistair Day has in hand. These will involve scaffolding and may block access to the yard for a short time. You will be kept up to date on this. Gardener extra ordinaire ,Eric Robins has celebrated his 90 th Birthday. A hearty congratulations Eric. At his birthday function, his lockdown project was displayed, A wooden model of a Traction Engine & Threshing mill. Remarkable. I’m hoping for a good turnout at the AGM and plenty of committee nominations. See you on August 6th

Dear fellow members I’m pleased to write this report on the year past. Well , what a year of two halves ,Our 2019 half started with such promise Cancer Run, Opening Run, Continental Vehicle day, National Veteran Rally, Mount Cook Rally, All American Weekend, Veteran/Vintage/ Commercial Rally, Christmas Dinner, Fairlie Parade, Ladies Rally, Weekend Away -- COVID !9--The Motorcycle Rally, The Mid Island Rally , Then the Wheels fell off---Lockdown No Swap Meet, Vintage only Rally, PV—P80 rally, All British Run, Delayed AGM BUT, We were able to hold a successful “Breakout/ Restoration Run & the Night Trial. As a result of the lockdown, The members owe a huge debt of gratitude to Michelle Munro & Nola Day for unravelling the Swap Meet bookings with only a relatively low number of site refunds done. Also to Shona & Bill for publishing the Tri Car and Nola for collating the email addresses and getting the “E” version of the Tri Car out to members over the Lock down. Alistair & Nola organised the Successful National Veteran Rally & Planned the Vintage only rally that didn’t happen ably assisted by Committee& Club members A BIG thank you to Neil Manchester for taking on the role of Club Captain this past year assisted by committee & club members. I’m sure the Rally participants appreciate his efforts Other committee members and members who have contributed greatly to the effective running of the club are Clive Merry assisted by John Campbell and the Parts Shed crew
6 Miles Winter for keeping the “paper work” in Order Barry Barnes in keeping the Library & Archives in order , dealing with an avalanche of incoming books and magazines. Shannon Stevenson for keeping the Web Site up to date Oliver Irving, Ross Parker, Ross Walkinshaw, Pauline Young for their contributions Colin Johnstone & The Swap Meet Committee for their efforts leading up to cancelled event. Good to see Eric Robins able to keep the gardens up to date and Warren Cox keeping the Lawns in order. John Foster has done an excellent job with the Cancer Rally and organising drivers for the daffodil delivery and Norm Bunt for organising the distribution in conjunction with the Cancer Society. Nola is to be congratulated on an excellent Balance Sheet ,despite the loss of Swap Meet income, showing a relatively small loss for the year. The issue of the Branch Levy needs to be addressed at the Annual meeting as The Current levy has not increased for many years and significantly fails to cover the cost of producing and distributing the Tricar plus cover other operating expenses of the club. Why should the hands o active members subsidise the rest of the membership ? It is the feeling of the committee that those members wanting a printed copy instead an “E” copy should be prepared to pay extra for it. I have enjoyed the past year in the Club and should I get voted back into the chair ,look forward to serving the club to the best of my ability.

ANNUAL REPORT PARTS SHED

I am pleased to be able to belatedly present my Annual Report to members of parts shed activities. We are somewhat fortunate to finally be able to gather in one room and I hope this situation will continue far into the future. Parts shed activity and performance was as per usual for the first 11 months of the 2019/20 financial year and then all activity stopped for April and beyond due to lock-down. Our income for the financial year was reduced by $1300 mainly due to this factor and we also increased our contribution to the club insurance bill by over $2100 so that we bore the total annual cost of the club's building insurance. This expenditure proved its worth last November when the rogue hailstorm struck our clubrooms. Damage to clear-light and spouting was repaired rapidly before further water damage could occur and our insurance covered the cost of this. For the previous reasons our surplus for the financial year ending 30th April 2020 was reduced to $1883 from $4853 the year before. We are actively selling some of our parts stock again, and coupled with trailer hire and scrap metal sales are able to financially help support the club as a whole as it faces re-roofing projects and a lack of swap meet income in the current financial year. I would like to remind every member that they contribute to the well-being of our club with each purchase from our parts shed. I will finish by nominating a member of our Wednesday team to receive an accolade for their regular attendance and willing assistance with whatever project we happen to be doing. The 2019/20 year has been another steady one for the Library with many items donated and processed during the year. Donations came from several sources but one major donation came from Anne Lovegrove of books from Barry’s collection and these items are shelved among the several other separate collections. Chris Chambers also provided several boxes of manuals, Judy Edwards has passed on a large number of books Dick has gathered up over the years and many other donors are again gratefully acknowledged. Duplicated magazines etc have been progressively left out for members to remove and are slowly disappearing though I would like to see a few more disappear. At the appropriate time I will probably pass on anything suitable to the Rotary Annual Book Sale, so get in before then. Borrowing has been steady with items being taken out and brought back each Club Night. A thank you to borrowers who have been returning items regularly without need for prompting. Items for placement in the display cases continue to trickle in and there was not much room left but the arrival of a new display case has helped to remedy that. A new set of shelves has also eased the pressure on accommodating the steady increase in inventory due to the ongoing donations coming in. Despite the hiccup caused by the Covid lockdown we are in the enviable position of being able to operate freely again and we fervently hope this situation continues. The Library/Resource room is a valuable asset and frequently draws favourable comment from visitors from other Branches. It is there for all members to use so I enjoin members to just browse around, maybe take a book or two out and make the most of what we have. I thank members for their support. SWAPMEET CHAIRMANS REPORT 10 With just over 2 weeks before the Swap Meet was due to happen, we were forced to cancel it because of Covid 19 and Government regulations. Unfortunately we had already spent a large sum of money on Radio and Newspaper advertising, signage, printing etc which was a considerable loss. It was very gratifying when we contacted the site holders, that they didn’t all seek their site fees refunded, and were happy for them to be carried over to next year. At this point I would like to sincerely thank my committee for all their hard work and effort and also to club members that had offered to help over the duration of setting up, running and the clean up of the swap meet. Remember this is our major club fundraiser so I hope you will all help to make next years swapmeet a success.

CLUBROOM CONVENOR REPORT. All in all a rather disappointing year with Covid 19 causing many hall hire cancellations. Probably the worst we have had, as we are needing major work done to repair our rapidly deteriorating roof, which also involves the replacement of all the linings as well. These repairs will be done in stages, with the Bar, Kitchen, & Foyer being done first. This is the original “A” frame area. It is unknown the exact cost, as more deterioration is found the further we get into it. Thank goodness we have some investments. With no Swapmeet this year we will need to dip further into these investments than was first thought. The bar continues as per normal, but it too suffered thru no Noggins during the pandemic. We always struggle to get people who are prepared to serve the supper and without the supper there will be NO BAR on Noggin nights. It only takes 2 people, one noggin in about 4 years or so if you all took your turn. Not much to ask of members. After all, this club belongs to YOU, as a member. I shouldn’t be having to continue to phone people to do their duty. SO add your name to the list. It is a good way to get to know other members and EVERYTHING is supplied. Not too difficult for anyone. The Committee works hard all year for your benefit, and they serve AGM supper. All we ask is some help from YOU during the other 11 months of the year. All going well, the roof repairs will be completed in due course and our funds improve next financial year. Special thanks to Sandy McMillan who has run the Bar on many occasions, Don Cameron for selling the raffles, and for those who have done their duty in the kitchen this past year, Alistair Day, Club Room Convenor.

A very interesting and hospitable day was organised by the above club. These events are great to see what members have in their workshops but also a great catchup with like minded members from participating clubs. A large contingent travelled down from Ashburton VCC, a good number from SCVCC plus some from Waimate. First stop on our schedule was up the hill above town after morning tea at the clubrooms, to Jim Boaden’s collection consisting of a variety of vehicles both English and American plus a couple of very nice motorcycles. A surprise in one of his garages was a very good condition Austin Sheerline, Austin’s competitor in the luxury car market, this example looked as though with a good wash and groom up it could be motored as is. Their distinguishing feature are those huge “dinner plate” headlights. Also parked out front was the notorious “DOGS BOLLOCKS” raceabout, it’s a challenge as to find any identification as to what powers it and what it is built up from!

Next call was to Murray McKenzie as he was just past the “Lolly Factory” several were seen to visit their shop, yours truly included. Murray is into classic Chevs, a 1960 Bel Air and a 70s Camaro but also a hot rodder, Harley Davidson owner, and vintage mopeds. From there it was down to the Historical Area of Oamaru to the Railway where a group of volunteers do a great job keeping the old gear going both steam and diesel locos for the local trips around the wharf area. They are also rebuilding one of the original wood bodied NZR carriages to join the ones they have already in service. Due to lack of space in this Tri Car issue we will feature the rest of the garage visits next issue. Your Editors

Since the lockdown lifted I have mostly got the influx of material under control. Some material has been moved into new areas of shelving, namely the technical books which has allowed more room for marque specific manuals. I would remind members that many of the detailed factory workshop p manuals, parts manuals, servicing manuals and the generally more complex tomes are in the technical section upstairs (access on request). Some of the general books have also overflowed into the new shelving, and given the steady rate of inflow over the last few years, it won’t take long for them to start to fill up. If you are looking for something please ask and I will be happy to show you. Ashley has made up the plinth to raise the newly acquired wooden display cabinet to a better viewing height and the various models we have acquired have been accommodated therein although nearly all require some repair and beautification. Again I would put out a call to any Club member prepared to undertake this. The models are all 50 to 60 years old and will need careful handling. A small amount of material has been transferred from the other cases, notably the spark plugs, into the new cabinet and I hope by moving some more items to also spread out the stuff in the other cases which were getting a bit crowded. Many thanks to Ashley for his assistance by upgrading our storage capabilities. Finally last month I referred to being unable to locate Terry Wilson’s book. I am happy to report that it was misfiled and is now back where it should be. If you haven’t yet read it, it is available again to take out. Highly recommended!

Weekend Away

This will be based in the Bishopdale area of Christchurch, which being near the Airport means there is a good variety of accommodation in the vicinity. Accommodation is available, especially through a surprisingly large number of holiday homes advertised on the internet. I have already booked one which will be the base for our Sunday and probably Monday get togethers for participants. Google “Accommodation near Airport Christchurch � which will bring up Bookabach, Holiday Homes, along with other options at the camping ground, motels, hotels etc. Nothing has been defined yet but thoughts include a visit to an eclectic collection en route on Saturday, which will be a touring day travelling off the main road as much as possible, hopefully stopping at some other places of interest,too. I will be looking into the option of an evening meal at the Papanui Club on the Saturday evening and recommendations for other options are welcome. Sunday, I am thinking maybe a brunch somewhere with then a bit of a jaunt around nearby attractions followed by a communal meal on Sunday night. Monday is an optional bonus day and depending on who is planning to stay on rather than head for home, we will sort out some suitable activities. Instructions and other details provided to participants, prior to event. As usual, no entry fee, no entry form, nothing compulsory. Easy paced and still suitable for older vehicles. Club eligible vehicles preferred but moderns OK Everyone welcome, and would certainly love to see some new faces. Night Trial – by Shannon Stevenson On a cold misty mid-June Saturday evening, a number of car loads of us ventured to the clubrooms for a fish-and-chip tea, before setting out in the pitch-black for a run through the South Canterbury wilderness. Where a number of us sought the efficient heater systems of modern vehicles there were a few who braved the elements in older vehicles, a couple sans heaters. For myself, this was a navigation spot alongside Ross Walkinshaw in Tony McGillen's 1952 Austin A70. Torches were essential for the instructions – and quiz questions thrown into the mix. Hitting the roads after 6:30, the run, organised by Alistair and Nola Day had us doing a loop of the South Street and Cemetery district, before heading out to Otipua, and up the Rocky Hundreds Road, and down through Fairview, and back up via Landsborough Road. With a run through the shadowy streets of Gleniti, it was out down Kellands Hill Clive Merry's Ford Mustang doing a fly past at this point – and into Levels and airport territory before crossing the Opihi into Temuka. Negotiating the bright lights of King Street, it was a trip down Domain Avenue and out to Milford, encountering a member's paddock-based car collection on the way. Nearing the dairylands of Clandeboye, it was a trip west to Winchester, and alongside roads to Orari, before heading across to Geraldine. At Geraldine we soon found ourselves heading up into the downs - did not hear if any members encountered a Talbot forest bat on their travels – and down into town, the run taking us past several main street establishments with patrons having a post-lockdown night out. With Geraldine covered, we were out west, crossing Speechley's bridge before being headed down Earl Road, and out the back blocks of Winchester to Te Awa Road. From there it was a quick open-road run back to the clubrooms – a modified car enthusiast finding that the McGillen A70 had a fair bit of 'low-end' power when the Ranui Avenue lights went green. Back at the clubrooms, the heater systems were in full roar, and the teas, coffees and muffins went down a treat. Thanks Alistair and Nola for a great darkened run. Shannon Stevenson

With a very cold wind & the sun shining, 15 cars left the clubrooms & headed for Rockdale Rd then up Landsborough Rd & across Claremont to Rosebrook Rd Which is a very nice touring road. Turning right onto Cliffs Rd & down Taiko Hall road – a nice shingle road for those that love it – well there wasn’t much shingle left on the road actually. We then headed to O’Neils Reserve on the Cave highway to have afternoon tea. It was very pleasant sitting in the sun with no wind & catching up with all the club members. Horsepower Rally 2020 is a fundraising event to raise funds for the erection of a new shed for the storing and protection of vintage tractors at the South Canterbury Traction and Transport Museum facilities in Brosnan Road, Washdyke, Timaru. This shed will complement the recently built Transport shed that now houses over 30 classic trucks and is already all but overflowing. In conjunction with the funding of the shed, $2 from every gate entry taken will be donated to a local charity within South Canterbury and helps anyone in need. This event will run over 2 days, Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th October 2020 at the well-equipped Levels International Motor Raceway in Levels, Timaru. Due to the hard work of the committee it is envisaged there will be upwards of 1000 entries on show. In this number there will be vintage and classic trucks, tractors, traction engines, cars of all make and models, stationery engines, military equipment and anything that has HORSEPOWER - a petrol heads heaven! Horsepower Rally 2020 will be a fun event for the whole family with entertainment, music, food, fun activities, with displays happening all day long. I thank them and also thanks to Oliver Irving for saving and donating a number of car lights and lenses. Again most of these are identified which makes our life so much easier.
