I have been “reprimanded” by several members on my lack of knowledge of Japanese vehicle marque’s, as I referred to Neil Manchesters latest purchase (which had its first outing at Fairlie New Years parade) as a Datsun 180B when it is in fact the more upmarket 240Z model. I stand corrected, apologies Neil.

SOME SITES AROUND TE ANAU
While visiting a fellow vintage and machinery enthusiast near Te Anau a week or so ago I had the opportunity to visit the local vintage and machinery club workshop and museum. They have quite a large main building and associated buildings with a large collection of restored tractors and equipment, a workshop where members are continually working on restoring more gear. Also because there is not a VCC club in the area (the nearest being Gore, who most belong to,) several vintage car members in the TeAnau area belong to the machinery club so several of their cars are on display in the museum, seen here a member’s Model A Coupe parked outside. They also have an excellent display of motorcycles, some very early models,
Howden started off with the Bruce McLaren team as the gopher, eventually working his way up to drive Formula 1 for BRM initially, the Williams, March and Maki. He told the story of the Japanese ringing him up to drive for the new Maki team ( imagine Benny Hill style Japanese English ) and thought it was someone taking the mickey but after about 3 attempts by Maki - Howden signed up. Howden has also raced Formula 5000’s, sports cars – Matra ,Gulf and Chevron and in partnership with Tim Schenken made the single Tiga. Also did Can-Am with BRM. He told us some of the race cars still exist around the world, others having been cut and modified over the years. Howden and girlfriend Joy’s ride from Levels into our club night was in the 1929 Durant, probably their slowest ride ever! Taxi ride home was the Day’s Super Minx which made Joys night as her father owned one of them. To our members who missed it, we apologise as it was only arranged a week before at Christchurch and our club mag was already out. However, our club library now has Howdens book, The Road To Monaco, so join the waiting list to read it, or buy the book yourself. Howden Ganley has given talks all over the world, at some prestigious places, so now he can put the South Canterbury Vintage Car Club on his C.V .also, hopefully at the top. PARTS SHED The parts shed crew are almost up to full strength again after supporters being away on holiday during the summer period. The team are pleased to welcome Eric Robins back and together with assistance from Rob Hopper and Warren Cox the grounds are looking particularly well cared for. Regular rain over spring and summer has also contributed to this no doubt. Both the parts shed and library have been the recipients of kind donations of parts and books from Dave Barron who is relocating and downsizing. The club is grateful to him and others who consider us significant enough to benefit from these these gifts. Our parts shed continues to hold good stocks of consumable items for our older vehicles and we are able to assist the majority of folks who pay us a visit on Wednesday mornings. Our friend Graham, who is also a VCC member, has quite a rare Model T Roadster which he has had stored away in a shed for 30years, it was running at the time and it is in very sound condition. He keeps telling me that he must get it out and back on the road soon, (but I’ve heard that statement for some time!)
Graham being an agricultural contractor is also into collectable tractors and is shown here in the museum on his Perkins powered Cockshut diesel built in Canada. This TeAnau facility is well worth a visit if down that way. ED - Bill

Hi Fellow Members , By the time you read this, the Chairman’ Rally will have been and gone and I sincerely hope those attending enjoyed it. It is a real challenge to find new places to go & are of interest to members, hence this one was out of town. The Mid Island Rally is well in hand ,a BIG thank you to Ross & Delwyn for their secretarial work dealing with entries. I urge all members to come to the Evening function whether or not they plan to go on the rally as we will be presenting 50 year badges to Ron Cooper and Lionel Suter. At our last Club Night, our Guest Speaker former Formula 1 drive Howden Ganley had the rapt attention of a larger than usual group and gave a fascinating insight into the world of motor racing in more glory days than the present. In any event the Club decided to purchase a copy of Howden’s book “The Road to Monaco” which I have briefly perused and it seems to be a most comprehensive account of a long career in the motor racing world. It is written in an easy style not laden with statistics and will be a popular addition to the Library. Already Grant Stewart has taken it out! We have also just received from Grant a number of other motor racing books from his personal collection, several autographed, and they have been placed in a separate collection appropriately labelled the Grant Stewart Collection. Many thanks Grant. We have also been donated a number of books by Dave Barron, mostly Model A Ford related but also a Toyota Landcruiser Owner’s Manual, the BMC Autobook covering A55/60 and their Morris, M G, Riley and Wolseley clones, and an MG TF and TD workshop manual. Many thanks to Dave for his kind donation. The display area has had another item squeezed in – an early example of a window demister donated by Jim Geddes. While not related to the Library, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those who assisted with the Ladies Rally in particular Anne and Norm Bunt for assistance with morning tea, especially Anne for supplying the delicious scones, Lex Westoby, who acted as judge/advisor for the “Pinny” award (taken out by Chairman Ashley) and Shannon Stevenson for marshalling at the St David’s Church stop and at our Murrayfield visit where Sandy Murray showed us her amazing display of miniature buildings. Grateful thanks to this talented lady and husband Dennis for their hospitality. We almost had an oops moment at the Church which was found not to be unlocked as arranged. Fortunately we were able to make contact with the representative who had indeed unlocked it in the morning but it seems another of the Church management group, unaware of our pending visit, had found the Church unlocked and locked it again!

On a cold, rainy and windswept Sunday late February morning, after many days of heatwaves, over 15 vehicles materialized at our Clubrooms at around 10 for the Chairman's Run, organized by Ashley Milliken. With teas and coffees served by the Luscombe's warming us up, we were soon away traversing Timaru Port streets with question sheets in hand covering various landmarks. Leaving Washdyke, it was up the Seadown straights to the Shearers Quarters, past a large field of Maize and over the Opihi to Temuka. With Temuka navigated, it was out via road works to Fonterra country, Clandeboye, and along Farm Road to reach Old Main South Road – Clive Merry's 1968 Mercedes Benz 280S seen in full flight at that point. Crossing the Rangitata bridge, the rain opened up when heading down Ealing Road, only to dry up again on Junction Road. It was a fast trip for a number of us along the billiard table flat roads east of SH1, most of us reaching Tinwald by midday. For most of us the lunch venue was the Ashburton branch clubroom, however for the Fosters and myself, it was a picnic at Tinwald Domain until a search party – Ross Luscombe – showed up. It was neck and neck with the question sheets for a number of members – Barry Smith and Rodger Baird scoring highest. For the Afternoon, the run took us up to north-east Ashburton, to Aeroview Function Venue, owned and operated by Peter and Larriane McQuarters. Peter, a radio announcer known on the airwaves as "Peter Mac" is a long time enthusiast of vintage cars, fire engines, cinema, planes and films, and this was evident through the complex – the bar and theatre room in particular having a fair amount of memorabilia within, captivating us for several hours.

Peter and Sandra Grant from Fairlie joined us with their rare and immaculate 335 Consul Capri coupe which looked to have a bigger boot than that of John and Marion Foster’s impressive and recently acquired Rolls Royce Silver Spirit in which Don and Heather Cameron rode to the Sunday evening meal. Quite a contrast to their Mini Clubman though I know which one I would prefer to have to pay the fuel bill for! Jim and Pat Geddes completed the group with their unique Triumph Herald special It’s a bit of work to put the event together but it’s great to be part of a smaller group you can really get to know over the weekend and from my viewpoint well worth it and a highlight of our vintage year Looking to go south next year. We may have to go back to Oamaru to get a holiday home big enough for our group meal. Lots to see and do in the area though.

Nine cars and 17 people took part in this year’s trip to Methven stopping for lunch at Lake Hood and having a break in Ashburton, where some of us had a look around the Museum and Art Gallery, now housed in a new building, and more prosaically a visit to Bunnings. We went to the Brown Pub in Methven for our evening meal where our relatively large group was efficiently served with tasty and reasonably priced meals. On Sunday morning we met for brunch at the Primo Café which despite its second hand store look provided us again with great service and selection plus the opportunity to look around the eclectic array of stuff just on display and for sale. The interesting displays at the Information Centre were checked out by most and then we went out to Te Awa Awa Rata reserve where some took a short bush walk after extracting Norm Bunt’s MG from a soft patch. We then went on to Sharplin Falls reserve where a nice stream side walk of about 5 minutes each way was available. Most of us then repaired to the Staveley shop and café which was flat out with a group of bikers among the clientele. The Museum over the road was also visited before heading back to Methven. That night everyone came around to the holiday home we had hired, “Arwen”, just next to the golf course. It is a large place and was home to The Bunts, the Wenlocks and Shannon as well as Carla and me for the weekend, and it worked well for us. On Sunday night there was heaps of room for everyone, initially outside, then all inside when the meal was on. We all had a grand night, to top off a really good weekend aided by really good weather. Next day most headed home but as Arwen has a minimum 3 night hire Ros, Les and Carla and I opted to stay on for the extra night and generally loafed around till lunch time when we cleaned up the remainder from the previous night’s meal then went for a spin down to Barrhill village in Les’ lovely 1939 Chev which I was privileged to be allowed to drive. We thought the Brown Pub was so good on Saturday we made a return visit that night. The 28 Buick of Clive and Penny was the only real vintage car and I copped a bit of stick from Clive for bringing the Peugeot 205 cabriolet though Shannon was happy enough to forsake the Escort and take over driving the Peugeot for Sunday’s festivities.
11 Playing on the big screen were documentaries covering Malcolm and Donald Campbell, and the Model T Ford, alongside a yesteryear street scene complete with Ford Model T, outside was a stage with seating most suited for wedding purposes, while in a shed amongst model vehicles and an artist studio were a number of immaculate vintage Essex, a fire engine and an airplane cockpit.
Peter and Larraine were great hosts, Peter telling us enlightening stories of his career and interests, with no-one going away hungry with the afternoon teas on offer. Cheers Ashley for an interesting run. Shannon Stevenson
