Our July club night required some last minute re-jigging, as Doug Green washed and cleaned his Graham-Paige to be the star of the night, but once he had finished it refused to start. I believe it is all go again now, and will be the star of our August club night. I did my best to keep those in attendance entertained, giving a pictorial account of the 3 weeks Sean and I spent touring England and Wales at Christmas time, avoiding talking about cars. Since our Night Run could not go ahead in April, it was rescheduled as our July club run, and it was a crisp dry evening, not too cold, and was a well run, enjoyable event. Sadly it appears we will not be holding a Sulphur City Rally this year, the logistics of trying to cobble something together before the end of the year is looking unattainable. We will instead hold a club run on Sunday, 23rd August, and for those that want to be a part of the VCC National Day, there are details later in this issue about a parade and 1 hour car show being put on the following Sunday (30 August) by Eastern Bay of Plenty branch, starting at the Hub in Whakatane and finishing there too. Back to our club run on the 23rd. We will be starting and finishing the run away from our clubrooms, and the run will be a morning run starting and finishing in Ngongotaha, and there will be a light lunch afterwards at my workshop with all food and tea and coffee provided. The content of the run will be weather dependent, but I am sure it will be a fun morning. Just be aware 2

that the workshop has no heating if it is a chilly day! This coming month’s Midweekers activity will be to provide delivery services for the Cancer Society on Tuesday, 25th August. More details about this later in this issue. This provides a great service to a very worthwhile cause. You can use a modern vehicle, or just come along and help in another vehicle. It is nice to see some club cars involved, but moderns are welcome too. The weekend following club night I will be taking the family to Whanganui so they can explore the environs while I attend the VCC Executive Meeting and AGM on the Friday night and Saturday. The AGM itself is open to any individual who wishes to attend and be a part of proceedings. This will be the first large scale VCC meeting since the AGM in Greymouth last year due to the Executive Meeting in March having to be cancelled. Just a reminder if your WoF expired earlier this year, or expires soon, that although there is a grace period to get it renewed (until 10 October) all cars still have to be of a warrantable standard if driven on the road, and this is especially important for insurance purposes. It is hard to believe we are almost two-thirds of the way through a very strange year, and there is still so much uncertainty ahead. One of the topics I have heard discussed recently is the effect the Covid-19 pandemic may have on keeping modern cars roadworthy, with production of spare parts and important consumables heavily affected. Our older vehicles may just come in to their own as things progress, and may even save the planet! Lastly, please do not forget the Swap Meet is back ON, and will be held Sunday, September 27th. We have the volunteers board up in the club rooms, we need all the member help we can get. Side Curtains August 2020

CALLING ALL MEMBERS ! The Swap Meet and Car Show is later than planned, but will be held at the usual venue on Sunday, 27 September. We need members to fill all the usual volunteer positions to ensure the event is successful on the day. We have the board up in the club rooms and there are two club nights still to go to add your name to the volunteer positions. This is the single most important event we put on each year, and it is critical to the good running of the club and to keep our annual branch levies low. Please, if you are able to help, put your name down on the board. There are plenty of important positions to fill, and not all start at 7am.

Daffodil Delivery Day / August Midweekers Augusts Midweekers activity will be the delivery of daffodil bunches for the Cancer Society. This will be on Tuesday, 25th August, meeting by 9.15am at the Cancer Society Rooms in Ranolf Street. On behalf of the Cancer Society we will deliver daffodils to businesses and residents as part of their annual fundraiser. We need around a dozen cars, with a driver and at least one passenger to run the daffodils in as quite often it is necessary to double park. We have had a mixture of vintage, classic and modern vehicles in the past and it would be great to see the same again. The Cancer Society rooms are on Ranolf Street in the block south of the Pukuatua Street roundabout. If you can help please let Angie know by phone at 348 4546 or text at 027 475 4054.

Starting with morning tea at the clubrooms on a very warm and sunny winter morning, everyone choose to stay outside the front of the clubrooms. Some lengthy discussions, and study of the old faithful AA map took place as to the preferred and shortest route. Decision made, we headed off for The Red Barn Café at Thornton around the lakes through Rotoma to take the “said” shortest route by turning left before the bridge in Te Teko and proceeding through Edgecumbe to Thornton. Fortunately we were able to take the warm sunny weather with us so we all enjoyed lengthy lunch in the café garden. Following lunch we all went our separate ways home. I chose to check out the “said” long way between Te Teko and Thornton but I guess member “X’s” shortest way will always be his shortest way, but my way via the main road is 1.3 miles shorter! With such a good home baking at the Red Barn café we will have return at an early date so every one can check out the mileage. Side Curtains August 2020

“Not a Spring Tour” - April 2021 Following the uncertainly around Covid-19 and other events there had been little time to sorting out or fitting in a Spring Tour. It has been suggested that should there be a tour it should happen over a weekend so enabling working members to take part in at least part of the tour. The date selected hopefully avoids the heavy summer traffic flows and should also be a little cooler for travel in older cars without modern air conditioning. It also avoids Easter weekend (April 2 - 5). The suggested itinerary below is at this stage, just a suggestion and subject to some changes. Before proceeding further we require expressions of interest along with any suggestions that you may wish to make. Thursday 15th April Drive to and stay in Dannevirke) (338km) Friday 16th April Drive from Dannevirke to visit Police Museum (Porirua) stay at Paraparaumu (228km) Saturday 17th April Super gold card holders free stuff day; free train to Wellington, free visit Te Papa, free cable car, free return by train to motel. (Sorry no free meals or accommodation! ) Alternative catch the Ferry (no free ferry) to Kapiti Island. Sunday 18th April Morning visit to Southwards Car Museum ($20 pp $15 SGC holder) Afternoon start return journey to Rotorua maybe stay some where on the way home and find some a place of interest to visit on the Monday? (399km via State H’way 1) Other Options Depending on the interest there are some other options: 6

2) Take an extra day to travel via Hawkes Bay leaving Rotorua on Wednesday 14th April and stopping at Napier/Hastings and Masterton. 3) Follow State Highway 1 - Stay some where on the way, possibly Palmerston North (323km) Drive from Palmerston North, visit and stay as above (120km) The usual format to be followed which means everyone is free to join/leave or deviate from the planned itinerary. Nothing is arranged at this stage, we need serious expressions of interest so that further planning can proceed. If you are interested in joining this group or have any questions regarding this tour please contact me. Library Notes Thanks to donor Graham Manson, and others, our collection of Beaded Wheels magazines is becoming closer to completion. We now just need some very early issues of the magazine and its precursor to fill some of the gaps prior to issue No. 69. And we now have a lot of duplicates! I estimate the pile would be well over a metre high if it were possible to stack them. It is planned to bundle them up in one, two (or more) year groups and offer them to members, or to the public for whatever donation would be acceptable. There is great reading to be had and many of our members have been featured over the years, so grab them and enjoy many hours of armchair motoring! JULY NIGHT RUN

They say variety is the spice of life. Well after our “poker run” with a twist last month, our Night Run was a different experience from recent rallies also. Ably put on by Roger and Diana Nelson and a team of helpers, not least of those in the kitchen, we all met at the clubrooms as the light faded and started the night off with a pea, pie and pud main course. After the meal we all ventured out with clues where to find a large printed letter of the alphabet at each stop. They were all easy to find (I think) except perhaps the last one... After a good run around a few of the industrial areas away from traffic on a busy Saturday night, our last stop was outside a diary in Koutu Rd, and alas, someone had removed the letter. That did not stop a few intrepid souls disembarking any putting in sterling efforts (to no avail!) to find the missing letter. Once all back at the club rooms and the dessert course finished, we were given the last letter for free, and set about using our letters for an anagram of a topic in Beaded Wheels. It was quite challenging, and perhaps no surprise that the winner was our Idle Torque editor, Ronald & Gloria Mayes. They have the honour to set next year’s run. Fleur and I managed second place, for some chocolate bars, which I think the kids ran off with quickly. The answer was SWAP MEETS & RALLIES. It was a very enjoyable run, with a twist from the normal, all the clues and letters easy to see in the darkness, and the route stress free in night traffic. Thanks to Roger and all the others that helped on the night, it was a very enjoyable evening. Looking forward to what the Mayes’ put on next year. 8
