Chairman’s Report - June 2022

As I finalise the copy for this month’s Side Curtains to send to the printer, I am stuffed up with Covid-19, which has finally caught up with me. I went to the Maori All Blacks vs Ireland last week, and suspect that’s where it finally got me. The only good news is that I am allowed out and about again the day before the Swap Meet. Now I just have to cross fingers that Fleur and the kids don’t get it during the week. Not many pics were received for this month’s edition so I padded the back pages out with some photos from the Tauriko car meet last month. Fleur and I had planned to take two cars to the Hamilton Diner meet just before our club night but that couldn’t happen in view of my contracting the “Rona”. Our club night for July is a week early so we can finalise our needs for the Swap Meet. I cannot attend but the Swap Meet organisers will be there. If you have not put your name forward to help and are able to do so it would be very helpful if you could be there on Wednesday night. We will also have Joelene Hossack’s 1938 Morris Eight as the car in the room. Our August club event is the Sulphur City Rally at the end of that month. The prize giving dinner will also double up as a celebration of the branch turning 50 years old. The national VCC President Dianne Quarrie will be in attendance to hand out 50 year and 35 year badges. All members past and present are welcome to attend the dinner, you do not have to take 2

part in the rally to be there (but it would be nice to see you at both events!). We will make sure there is a registration form available soon just for the dinner for those not wanting to take part in the rally. There is a slightly compressed entry form for the Sulphur City Rally in this issue, but you can also download an entry form and print it from the branch website. You only have to complete the section on the right of the front page and send it in to enter. As you will see in the Secretary’s column, we have found a new treasurer, that is very much appreciated as it is a very important role to manage our branch’s funds. Let’s hope the Swap Meet is a big success. A week out the long range weather forecast looks good. A successful Swap Meet is very important for the long term good of the branch. There will be a midweekers event at the end of July, hopefully members can be given some detail at club night, but the regular crowd will be contacted with details as they emerge. We are looking for a couple of people to run the August and September midweekers, if you would like to do that please let Dennis Whimp know. The VCC holds its AGM the weekend after our August club night, and I will drive up and attend the meetings over the weekend. It is being held in Karaka, South Auckland. Hopefully we might find out more about the possibility of extended periods between WoF checks for our older cars. Side Curtains July 2022

FROM THE SECRETARY by Dennis Whimp A big welcome to our new members: John Shaw of Glenholme who has a Jaguar XK8. Richard Armstrong of Hamurana who has a Norton Commando We look forward to seeing you at all of our events and functions. Name badges. We provide name badges free to all new members. Existing members who have misplaced their badges, see me and I will arrange a new one. Cost is $15. It is important that name badges are worn to all our functions, not only because new members don’t know who we are, but many of us are of an age where memory is slipping. How often do you hear, “ there’s what’s his name”. Maryann Scott has volunteered to be our treasurer and will shortly take over the reins from Sandra Fitzpatrick. Many thanks to both. For the past seven and a half years, Sandra has been extremely thorough in keeping our finances in order and providing clear reports for Terry to present to our committee. It was real team work. They say things go in threes. The kitchen is coming up 25 years old. The stove packed it in last year and we had to replace it. The carpet in the main area was delaminating and has just been replaced. Then last week the fridge compressor seized. To repair it was almost the same cost as a new fridge. Fortunately Noel Leeming’s sale was on so we got a replacement fridge freezer with a third off the normal retail price. Fingers crossed that is the lot for a while. It is with sadness that I advise members of the passing of Shirley Crowe. Our sympathies go out to Maurie and family. At Shirley’s request, there was a private family funeral. 50th Anniversary dinner. Saturday 27th August. 6pm. Millennium Hotel. Diary this event if you haven’t already. The dinner will 4

combine with the Sulphur City Rally Dinner. We will be presenting 35 and 50 year badges at this event. If you think you are eligible and would like one, please contact me.
SWAP MEET 2022 by Alan Judd It’s Swap meet time again this coming weekend and we still need some more volunteers so if you can spare a few hours next Sunday that would be great. The general timetable for the day is: 6am - first shift volunteers meet for briefing over by the pits area 6.15am - sellers let in to set up - Neville in charge. 7am - gates open to public: Top gate EFTPOS, Stan’s Gate, Sellers Gate 9am - approx second shift on gates 1-2pm start clear up We particularly need a few more people to be on one of the pedestrian gates (Stan’s Gate) from 9am onwards for a couple of hours. If you can spare the time please let me or Dennis Whimp know as soon as you can. There is free food/hot drinks available all day for volunteers. If you want to enter your car in the Car Show part of the event you will need to go in the Top Gate then downhill to the left and follow directions for parking in the Track centre (Bob Mackay in charge). We also need a few more pairs of hands to help with set-up on Saturday afternoon 1pm onwards if you have an hour or so to spare just turn up at the track. This event is the major annual fundraiser for our Club and helps keep us solvent and able to subsidise events throughout the year so any help you can give will be much appreciated by us all. June 2022 Car in the room
by Kevin Scott Kevin and Maryann Scott’s 1990 Ford Capri 1.6 Turbo Ghia The Ford Capri SA, SC and SE range were assembled in Australia from 1989 to 1994. Designed by Ghia of Italy which gave the car it’s European styling, the convertible was based on the front wheel drive Ford Laser/Mazda 323 floorpan. It was destined for big things as it was built in both Left Hand and Right Hand Drive. The left hand drive cars being sent to North America and sold as Mercury Capris. A total of 66,640 of these cars were built and 55,932 were LHD, the balance of 10,347 being RHD. Of the RHD version 9,787 were sold in Australia, 440 sold in New Zealand and the remaining 120 were exported to Singapore. The Capri was built to compete with the newly developed Mazda MX5. It differed from the traditional sports car design firstly by being a front wheel drive and secondly it was not a true two seater being a 2+2. Ford offered this model with several different engine options those being a 1.3ltr, a SOHC 1.6ltr EFI and a DOHC 1.6ltr Turbo EFI. A automatic transmission was also available on all models except those with the Turbocharged engine which had a 5 speed manual transmission. It was unfortunate for Ford that when the cars went on the market the convertible top leaked badly in wet weather. Although Ford promptly addressed the problem the motoring press gave the car a bad wrap from which the car never truly recovered. After selling our 1936 Ford V8 we looked around for a more modern replacement. Capris were in the mix particularly a Mk2 or 3. However we were travelling through Te Aroha and I had heard about this car so we decided to contact the owner and have a look. After some discussion and taking the car for a drive and then some further discussion and negotiation a deal was done and we owned the car. Our car is unmolested and in original condition although it has been repainted in the original colour and has been reupholstered in 8

leather. It came with a bolt on hardtop also in immaculate condition. It has had a sports car type steering wheel fitted, the only non standard item on the car. We also got several boxes of spares including replacement lights, electric window mechanisms and motors and a complete new soft top. Our Ghia version has a 1.6ltr DOHC, EFI engine, develops 100 Kw and has a five speed manual gearbox. Performance and handling are great and it is a fun car to drive. Having power steering makes it as good as any modern day driver, something we both like. Although the car has done just under 250,000kms it drives like new.
JUNE MIDWEEKERS - ROTORUA’S RAILWAYS by Ronald Mayes
What a great turnout for the short run which I had organised! 20 members and 3 friends/neighbours, 9 club cars and only 4 moderns. I told them a (very) little about the now-closed Putaruru - Rotorua branch and directed them through town, pointing out where railway locations of interest had been or were still visible, and on to Pukehangi Rd. There we visited fellow railway modeller Brett Bodle who demonstrated his magnificent layout depicting Rotorua, Ngongotaha, Tarukenga and Mamaku as it was in the 1950s and early 1960s. Too many people in the double garage in which the layout is housed to take any photographs of it (I will have to go back to do that). I had to drag them away to drive on to the lunch venue, the Rotorua Golf Club’s café where the caterers were a little overwhelmed by our numbers but rose to the occasion, had us housed at long tables in the bar, and were pleased by our support of the club (Gloria’s idea - she is long-time member). Time for only one photo of some of the cars parked at the lunch venue, and everyone headed home. Side Curtains July 2022
